During my 5 years at Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West, I have had the opportunity to see many families become homeowners and for the first time live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, undisturbed place of rest.
During the past fiscal year, the affiliate built and sold 13 Habitat homes. By becoming Habitat homeowners, families have the opportunity to undergo major transformations in their lives. It is wonderful to join with a family to celebrate the dedication of their new Habitat home. However, it is even more wonderful to visit with them after they have lived in their Habitat home for awhile and observe families undergo a transformation.
Because of their ADA Accessible Habitat house, Darlene and Shelby Desmond have been able to have their grandchildren visit for sleep overs, host family holiday meals, and have a safe environment for Shelby to maneuver his wheelchair.
Because of his Habitat house, Charles Certain has been able to raise his four grandchildren.
Because of her Habitat house, Dianne Warren is now living under 1 roof with her 2 children and her mother after being separated for several years due to a fire that destroyed their mobile home.
Because of her Habitat house, Latonya Foster’s daughter, Makayla, has been accepted into the Pre-Pharmacy Program at UL Monroe. Also, Latonya’s son, Tyrel, who has special needs has a home that has features to enhance his mobility and independence.
These and more than 200 other transformations have occurred because of the support of our volunteers and donors. Thank you for working with us. As you know, our work is not done. Therefore, I look forward to working with you as we continue to build homes and transform families in our community.

Women Build is a Habitat for Humanity International program that empowers women to make a difference by taking action against local poverty housing conditions. St. Tammany Parish has a need for affordable workforce housing and women possess the skills necessary to make a difference. Women Build encourages women volunteers, without excluding men, to further the home building mission of Habitat and positively impact the lives of families by making home ownership a reality. Women Build is an annual fundraiser during the entire month of October.

Women Accepting The Challenge of Housing (W.A.T.C.H.) is a group of dedicated ladies who ensure Women Build continues to thrive in western St. Tammany. It began in 2009 when a group of women accepted the challenge by pledging $1,000 a year. In recognition and appreciation of their support, members wear a hand-crafted glass lapel pin created by Carol Lapari designs.
