THE weather warms as wetravel further into the year and get-ting out and about does tend tolose a little of its gloss.
Temperatures of 40 degrees andabove can make bush walking adangerous option in the middle ofthe day as the rocks of the escarp-ment heat up.
The beautiful plunge pool atLeliyn or Edith Falls is a wonder-
ful place to beat the heat at thistime of year.
For those worried about croco-diles in the Falls, the Nitmiluk Na-tional Park crocodile managementstrategy is outlined in the NitmilukNational Park Plan of Manage-ment.
This encompasses an extensiveinitial trapping and survey pro-gram followed by fortnightly spotlight surveys of the area along witha trapping program that aims tominimise the risk of saltwatercrocodiles entering the waterway.
The falls are opened for swim-ming each Dry season only afterextensive initial crocodile man-agement and is closed as soon aswater levels in the Edith River startto rise with the oncoming wet sea-son.
While there is always a risk ofsaltwater crocodiles entering thearea, Leliyn is one of the better op-tions for swimming in the region.
Another reason for a swim atLeliyn is the fact that it is home tomany different animal species.
The largest of these are fresh-
water crocodiles, which are notconsidered dangerous, but may at-tack if disturbed or provoked.
Other reptiles in the area thatcan be spotted easily whilesnorkelling are Mertens WaterMonitors and Yellow SpottedMonitors, vulnerable goannaspecies which will frequent thewater and bank areas of the plungepool.
Turtles are also easily seen inthe clear water and fish are harderto avoid that to spot with some likethe little Barred Grunter keen to“interact” with you by nibbling atold and scruffy bits of your skin.
Moving slowly and quietlyaround in the less used areas of thepool will get you the best viewdown into the depths.
The pandanus fringed banks arehome to many small species whilevery large catfish can be found inthe deeper water.
Take your snorkel, goggles andflippers and while away the heat ofa build up afternoon learning moreabout your beautiful backyard thanyou ever thought possible.

Berry roulade cake
Ingredients:6 egg whites1 1/4 cups caster sugar1 tbsp cornflour1 tsp lemon juice2 tbsp icing sugar2 tbsp unsweetenedcocoa powder1 cup double cream1 punnet each of blue-berries, raspberries andstrawberries2-3 tbsp coarsely grateddark chocolateMethod: To make the roulade, pre-heat the oven to 170ºC.Line a Swiss-roll pan withbaking paper. Butter thepaper.Beat the egg whites in alarge bowl with an electricmixer fitted with a whisk at
high speed until softpeaks form.Gradually add in half thecaster sugar then beat inthe remaining castersugar until stiff, glossypeaks form.Fold in the cornflour andlemon juice.Spread the meringueevenly in the preparedpan.Bake for 20 minutes, oruntil pale golden, thenallow to cool for about 1hour.Place another sheet ofbaking paper on a worksurface and dust withicing sugar and cocoapowder, reserving somefor later.Turn the meringue onto
the baking paper.Carefully remove the topsheet of paper.For the filling, beat thecream until soft peaksform.Spread the beaten creamover the meringue with apalette knife.Sprinkle the fruit andchocolate evenly over thecream.Use the paper to help youroll up the meringue fromthe short end.Once rolled, dust with theremaining sugar andcocoa.Ease the roulade, seamside down, onto a servingdish and refrigerate for 1hour.Cut in slices to serve.
I was recently toldabout Phil O'Brien'sbook 101 AdventuresThat Got Me Ab-solutely Nowhereand went out andgrabbed a copies thatday.
Well, what a greatread.
I wolfed the bookdown in one weekend,mainly because all theshort stories are all sethere in the Territorywith many a tale lo-cally here in Kather-
ine. Plus Phil O’Brien
even names peopleand places I know.
The best part aboutthe stories within hisbook is that he writeslike a good old-fashioncampfire storyteller.
You could feel your-self sitting at a fire, lis-tening to him tell somehysterical tales oftimes he seemed tobe drawn to mischiefand mayhem.
Well, actually he ispretty much a magnetfor trouble most of the
time.Many of the sto-
ries involve bush char-acters, crocs, liquorand general naughti-ness on the author’sbehalf.
Phil O’Brien hashad a large and variedamount of careersover the years, someof them being croco-dile egg collector, Out-back tour guide andcampfire singer - andmost of his professionfeature in his book inone way or another.
In his book Phil
O’Brien brings to lifethe incredibly funnystories he has experi-enced in the NorthernTerritory - and the bestthing about the authoris - he is self deprecat-ing and never blamesanyone else for his ill-gotten deeds goneawry.

thought. ′I′m gunnatake the bush by
storm. “I′m gunna ride

It wasn′t the end ofthe world, but you onlyhad to shut your eyesto sense it wasn′t faraway.”
