Most people associate terrorism with Palestin-ian hate groups, but hate seems to know nobounds. Criticism last year of Messianic Jews hosting aspeech by George W. Bush brought back somememories of my time in Israel. Perhaps mythoughts will help everyone understand theproblems many Messianic Jews in Israel (and theUnited States) experience from radical groups. I have not spoken a great deal about the thingsI experienced in Israel because Israel receivestoo much criticism from the world. The countryis probably the strongest ally the United Stateshas ever had, though Israel has a few skeletonsin the closet. Supporting Israel should not include turning ablind eye to radical hate groups functioning inIsrael, such as the Jewish Defense League (JDL),a terrorist group that attacked my Jerusalemfellowship one night.� Christians have faced their own problemssharing their faith in Israel. But, the angerevangelicals face is nothing compared to the rage

MyDNA still identifies me as a Kohen and myfamily name is derived from a unit of measureused to determine how much Jews must pay tothe Temple each year. In spite of my familybackground, I probably could not become anIsraeli citizen. While atheists and Buddhists arewelcome, any Jew accepting Jesus is not. The girl on the plane wanted to know every-thing about me, and asked questions aboutTexas, my family, and why I was coming toIsrael. She assumed I was Jewish. “Tell me aboutyour synagogue?” she asked. I was a little startled by the question. She hadbeen very friendly and I knew her mood wouldsoon change.�

Teacher Sees IsraelTerror Attack First Hand

“We have a great fellowship,” I began. “Wehave a bunch of dedicated people who acceptJesus as the Messiah spoken of in the Tanakh.” She had been treating me like a family mem-ber, but now she was threatening. “You knowyou can get into a lot of trouble talking aboutJesus in Israel,” she said, after a long pause.“You can be arrested and deported from thecountry.” Messianic Jews are in the same situationReformed Jews faced many years ago from theOrthodox. The informality and acceptance ofgoyim were things the Orthodox felt would pass,and Reform Judaism would die out. Now, bothReform and Orthodox both look at Messianics(Jews who accept Yeshua ‘Jesus’ ) and say it is afad. But, the number of Jews accepting Yeshuaas their Messiah is growing. In 2002, the Southern Poverty Law Centeradded the JDL to its list of hate groups for theJDL’s history of attacking groups associated withthe former Soviet Union, neo-Nazi activists,Palestinian leaders, prominent black Americansand even Jewish moderates” as well as otherJewish radicals. They have bombed buildings inthe United States, according to FBI reports.

Within one day of reaching Jerusalem a youngArab took me to a small congregation of Jewsand gentiles on Prophet street. I sang and playedguitar at night to a large rousing mix of people.We were on a busy street and many Jews werecurious. They had never seen Jews worshipJesus, someone many were taught was a gentile. In spite of attempts by such violent Jewishorganization as the Jewish Defense League(JDL) to close our fellowship, many Jews werevery friendly and wanted to know more aboutYeshua. The JDL even tried to burn down ourbuilding one night, but everyone kept coming.

Boom, author of the Hiding Place,a book about her families experi-ences hiding Jews during theHolocaust, felt Dutch Christianchurches helped fuel the Holocaustby teaching Replacement Theol-ogy. It is the idea that Judaism hasbeen replaced by Christianity, andJews are no longer needed in theworld. The JDL were founded by RabbiMeir Kahane in New York City in1968, JDL’s self-described pur-pose was to protect Jews fromlocal manifestations ofantisemitism, though it has gonefar beyond that. Kahane wasassassinated in 1992 by an Arabgroup in New York City.

Alex was a Brooklyn Jew and we spent muchtime together and became close friends. Heexplained that he felt Christians are converts toJudaism, though many Jews and Christians donot agree. Christians and Jews both seem to overlookthat the Bible was written primarily by Jews,about a Jewish Messiah, that fulfilled manyJewish prophecies. Also, the First Centuryfollowers of Yeshua were considered a Jewishsect.� I took a summer off from my studies at LamarUniversity and was the song leader for thecongregation. I was sitting on a piano playingguitar when a man stood and began yelling thatHitler was a Christian, and that Christians hadtaken part in the Holocaust. Soon men began running into the buildingthrowing chairs and threatening the surprisedworshipers. During the attack one JDL was hit inthe head and lay on the floor unconscious. The
