Arlee Park Farm (Alesander Bell House, Windy Walls)
Architectural Survey File
This is the architectural survey file for this MIHP record. The survey file is organized reverse-
chronological (that is, with the latest material on top). It contains all MIHP inventory forms, National
Register nomination forms, determinations of eligibility (DOE) forms, and accompanying documentation
such as photographs and maps.
Users should be aware that additional undigitized material about this property may be found in on-site
architectural reports, copies of HABS/HAER or other documentation, drawings, and the “vertical files” at
the MHT Library in Crownsville. The vertical files may include newspaper clippings, field notes, draft
versions of forms and architectural reports, photographs, maps, and drawings. Researchers who need a
thorough understanding of this property should plan to visit the MHT Library as part of their research
project; look at the MHT web site (mht.maryland.gov) for details about how to make an appointment.
All material is property of the Maryland Historical Trust.

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
The Alexander Bell House is a two and a half story Queen Anne style house built about 1880 on the south side of Wheel Road about 1/2 mile west of Emmorton Road near Ennnorton, Harford County, Maryland. The main elevation faces north.
The main elevation is typically Queen Anne in its irregular arrangement. Dominating this facade are a turreted tower on the northwest corner and a shingled gable with a stone chimney at the northeast corner. Windows on the ground floor are high and narrow; with the upper portions a single pane surrounded by small squares in one of the typical window patterns of the style. The ground floor is finished in quarry-faced random ashlar stone. The second story is frame with shingles in a scalloped pattern. The gable is outlined with a wide cornice which has a <lentil molding. The gable face is shingles in a wave pattern. A shed porch extends across the north and west elevations. It has turned columns and perforated brackets. The cornice has a <lentil molding trim.
The west elevation's principal features are the corner tower and a stone chimney which is flush with the wall surface. Quarter round windows flank the chimney.
The south elevation is the rear of the house and has a small frame shed addition. A third stone chimney is on this side, with the same quarter round windows. In the angle between the west and south gable sections is a projecting bay window on the first floor, facing south. Two eyebrow dormers break the roof on each section.
The east elevation also has a projecting bay on the ground floor. An arched window on the second floor and a hooded gable window also provide variety on this facade, The foundation is stone and the roof is slate.
About 60 feet south of the house is the former carriage house, which was altered in the 1920's and 1940's. Parts of its exterior still retain the original board and batten siding, The alterations converted the building to servants' quarters.

The Alexander Bell House is an excellent example of the Queen Anne style country house of the late 19th century. It retains most of its original exterior materials and, true to the style, displays a wide variety of massing, windows, finishes, and details. Although the architect's name is unknown, the designer may have been a Baltimorean because the Bell family was from Baltimore.
Alexander Bell acquired the property in 1879 from the neighboring McHenry estate, Monmouth Farm (HA-703-712). Elizabeth Archer purchased the estate in 1935. In a 1962 deed between members of the Archer family, the farm was mentioned as "formerly known as Windy Walls, now known as Arlee Park Farm."
The house is now owned by a development company which has preliminary plans to renovate it as the connnunity center for a planned subdivision called "Country Walk".
Note: This form consolidates information on the carriage house, formerly nlllllbered HA-714 ..
