MOVIE REVIEW

The movie isset in 1963,Stephanie orS t e p p h y(Jane Levy) is a young lady living inLonely Arms a small town in rural

Ontario, whose main ambition is to become a fa-mous artist, with that purpose in mind she made ademo and sent it to a contest for young singers inNew York. She is in fact chosen, but then things willturn quite weird, especially after her father refusesto let her go. Her alcoholic and controlling father

(Peter Stormare) is the onlyfamily the poor girl has. What happens next may be

considered as a provocative de-tour from conventional cine-matic narrative or anincoherent succession of badly-conceived events: frustratedsinger Stepphy is trying to

drown her disappointment in alcohol when she is ap-proached by Fabian (David Reale) who had always ex-pressed some interest in the lady but with no muchsuccess. The two end up at Fabian’s factory wheresome strange fumes are leaking. The fumes in questionhave the effect to transform the town inhabitants into

mutants. Out of the blue famous rock singer BobbyShore (Justin Chatwin) makes an appearance in the lit-tle town. Stephanie who has been a long-time admirerof the rock star is obviously pleased to have him intown, especially since he is staying at her home. Thesinger’s car has had a problem and—very conve-niently—the young lady’s father owns the only servicestation and she actuallyknows a lot about car engines.

From that moment on thecomedy alternates betweenthe absurd, the musical, and akind of light horror by thesudden proliferation of mu-tants all over the town. Direc-tor Jeffrey St. Jules wasactually awarded a prize for this movie at the 2014Toronto International Film Festival as the best Cana-dian first feature. The film also won a Claude JutraAward. “Bang Bang Baby” was developed by St. Juleswhile at the Cannes Festival Residence Program.

“Bang Bang Baby” may appeal to those viewerslooking for something quite out of the ordinary interms of logical narrative, it may also appeal to thosewho like mutants, and yes, it also has very good songs. Not recommendable for those who like movies with awell-structured story. Length: 89 min.

With the completion this sum-mer of a multi-year renova-tion project, MarianopolisCollege is welcoming newand returning students onWednesday August 19 to a

modern and more efficient facility that it is re-spectful of the site’s heritage.“The strength of Marianopolis is what takes placewithin our walls, and by any standard we are amongthe best in class in Quebec,” said Marianopolis Di-rector General Len Even. “As a result of the tremen-dous improvements we have made to our historicbuilding, the quality of our facilities now matchesthe quality of the educational experience we offer.“The renovations complete our move to West-

mount Avenue of eight years ago and are indicativeof our success,” continued Mr. Even. “The majorityof our graduates are consistently accepted by theirfirst-choice university at the world’s top schools andwe continue to graduate our students on time at arate that no other school comes close to matching.”Indicators of Marianopolis’ leadership include:• Although Marianopolis has a small share of Mon-treal’s Anglophone pre-university graduates, itboasts a big share of admissions to competitive uni-versity programs such as architecture, dentistry, lawand medicine• Marianopolis students tend to have the highest av-erage R-Scores in the province and the most R-Scores above 34• Year after year, 88% of Marianopolis students at-tend their first-choice university, many of them intheir first-choice program.“Improving the student experience was a drivingforce behind the renovations,” noted Mr. Even.“Manon Asselin, who has been awarded the presti-gious contract for the Fifth Pavilion of the MontrealMuseum of Fine Arts, redesigned our library, cre-ating more study space for students. In addition, webuilt new classrooms, a new computer lab and moremultipurpose spaces for student clubs, and we trans-formed an old basketball court into a state-of-the-art black box theatre. We also renovated ourcafeteria and several lounges and added pedestrianwalkways to ensure safe and easy access to theample green space we enjoy on our property.”Safety and security were major concerns and

Marianopolis tripled security guards and patrols andplaced security cameras across campus. The Col-

lege also examined and in many cases made signif-icant repairs to every single brick of the architec-turally significant building that was designed in1925 by Jean-Omer Marchand, the most nationallyrenowned French-Canadian architect of his time.Significant repairs were made to the front steps andfront entrance on Westmount Avenue as well as tothe roof. Decades-old washrooms were also reno-vated.As it enters its second century of educating the

most motivated young people in Greater Montrealand beyond, Marianopolis remains rooted in the tra-dition of academic excellence that has solidified itsreputation as the province’s top pre-university col-lege.“Not surprisingly,” explained Mr. Even, “enrol-

ment is up. And fortunately we have been able toincrease financial aid and make our college moreaccessible to talented Montrealers.“As a private institution we are able to choose

how and where we focus our efforts and to committo personalized support for students,” Mr. Evensaid. “For example, our most recent partnershipwith the Alliance Sport-Études allows us to individ-ually support our student-athletes. Furthermore, ourstudents can study at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf dur-ing their last semester as part of the first bilingualexchange program of its kind in a unique collabo-ration between Montreal’s two prestigious privatepre-university colleges.” Marianopolis boasts a diverse student body com-prised of about 2,000 students from over 175 publicand private high schools, English and French, fromQuebec and abroad. WINE

There is no doubt. Whether by natu-ral tendency or as suggested by spe-cialised wine magazines, it lookswithout doubt that the preferencesof consumers is moving increasinglytowards drinking wines with a fresh

profile.

But what is the freshness of the wine? What doesit consist of? How do we identify it? To answerthese and other questions, I decided to write this ar-ticle on the freshness of wine that I hope you find ituseful. Let’s start! Before anything, it is worth clarifying what I am

referring to when I speak of wine freshness. Andthe answer is simple: I understand freshness as apositive perception of the wine’s acidity.Wine is an acidic drink in nature. In fact, all fruit

juices are, and wine, a fermented juice, is no excep-tion. Within wine we find three different types ofacids, which give different sensations on the palate:Tartaric Acid: Provides sensations of ripe fruit, fresh and pleasant flavours and “green” notes.Malic Acid:Gives the wine unpleasant harsh notesand unripeness.

Citric acid: Who doesn’t know the characteristicfeatures of freshness and liveliness of this acid?As a general idea, we could say that a correct

freshness combines acidity, fruitiness, exuber-ance, personality, liveliness (also found in oldwines) and quality, whereas low acidity and fresh-ness, gives us a heavier and more alcoholic wine.In addition, too high an acidity will also give un-pleasant sensations. One of the most extensive conclusions, yet some-times erroneous, about the freshness of wine iswhen we say that the freshness of a wine is due tosunshine and temperature. This is a logical conclu-sion, although not always true. And as with fruits, the more heat, the more mature

(and less acidic) the wine, the type of terrain andcontrast between day and night temperatures alsoplay an important role. But let’s put the theory intopractice. Here are three recommendations for freshwines that you can not miss:

tropical notes on the nose. More floral notes as well as lime come throughon the palate. Dry and light to medium-bodied with very crisp acidity.Well-balanced and refreshing with a long, lingering finish. 90/100. Give ita try with ceviche, or tuna tartare.

In French, the expression 'c'est pas la mer à boire' is akin to the Englishidiom, 'it's a piece of cake'. Loic Roure, the winemaker, works 10.5hectares around the Cotes du Roussillon appellation. The C'est pas la mer aboire, a blend of Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah is, in fact, very easy todrink! Loic makes his wines with as minimal intervention as possible, thuscreating pure and fresh cuvees. On the nose, the wine shows aromas of salty animal notes with garrigue.

In addition, some gentle nuances of cool red berry fruit. Medium body, thetaste is light and fresh with some animal and leather funk, but not display-ing bretty aromas. A faint raspberry picks up as well. The finale showssome wood with drying , but not aggressive tannins. Very nice wine thatgoes well with bbq meat. 92\100.

CIA's Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB's Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer)join forces in "The Man from U.N.C.L.E."

The Man fromU.N.C.L.E.—Nostalgia & action

By Sergio Martinezmtltimes.ca

One could have some curiosityas to how the theme of the oldTV series of the 1960s wouldbe tackled today, when theCold War has been over formore than a generation and

most young people may have just a blurredidea of what that confrontation was allabout. The general idea of the series wasstill there: at a time when Soviets andAmericans were at each other’s throats the

eventual emergence of a threat from a thirdparty forces the Cold War enemies to joinforces in order to battle the commonenemy. The collaboration is just a matter ofmutual convenience for both super powers, and a deeply rooted distrust remains betweenthe two spies throughout the whole joint oper-ation: “If needed, kill the Russian,” NapoleonSolo (Henry Cavill) was secretly instructed byhis superiors. “If needed, kill the American” IllyaKuryakin (Armie Hammer) was also told.

MOVIE

The two agents must stop the attempt by some former Nazis to build an atomic bomb

The movie, directed by Guy Ritchie, is set in1963, only two years after the Berlin Wall waserected, and starts with a risky operation in EastBerlin where young and pretty Gaby Teller (AliciaVikander) is to be taken to the west and then be re-united with her father, a renowned nuclear physicistwho has disappeared. In fact Gaby’s father has been taken to Italy where

a group of former Nazis and a local rich business-woman named Victoria Vinciguerra (Elizabeth De-bicki) are trying to build their own atomic bomb. This of course has prompted the Soviet KGB andthe American CIA to put their best agents at workin this vital operation to save the world (a grandil-oquent language is also very much part of thestory). A British spy chief, Waverly (Hugh Grant)is also dispatched to the crime scene.

As expected, there are beautiful women on both sides, Elizabeth Debicki plays the bad one, Victoria Vinciguerra

MOVIE

Keeping with the tradition of spy movies of thatperiod, there is a good combination of lovescenes (especially on the part of the AmericanSolo, Kuryakin for his part is more focused onhis work, although not less tempted by thewoman with whom he must work), luxuriousparties in some beautiful settings in theMediterranean, lots of action although nomuch explicit violence, and certainly beautifuland seductive women. “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” will delight some

nostalgic viewers of the old TV series, but itshould also be liked by young audiences will-ing to take a lighter look at what for them couldbe just history. The movie is entertaining, hassome elements of self-deriding humour, andshows a lighter side of a period that at timesput the world on the brink of disaster.Length: 116 min.
