It is not intended to be exhaustive but rather to give an introduction to the life and work of an outstanding illustrator, scientist and personality of Georgian England who lived long enough to see Queen Victoria ascending to the throne. Whereas Ferdinand had travelled widely and was studied also by previous authors this is not the case for Franz. Having come to England at the age of 30, he led a sedentary life at Kew, then a village on the river Thames way out of London, where he died at almost biblical age. However, these were not monotonous years. Many naturalists, among them the most eminent men of his days like Sir Joseph Banks, Robert Brown and Sir Everard Home, had their specimens and preparations documented by Franz and his illustrations were subsequently published in prestigious joumals and well known books. \ H.
