I speak to a lot of people—and usually they’re in a big group. So, I often find myself offering a collective “thank you” in a more universal way than I ought to. I thank people for attending an event, or for inviting me to participate, or for choosing UNC Pembroke as their college of choice. I say a lot of “Thank You’s” to a lot of people.

The truth is, the support of alumni and friends ultimately comes

down to the individual – down to the singular “You” who has, in one form or another, ensured that The University of North Carolina at Pembroke will continue to achieve its mission to provide pathways to a better future. Your gift may have added to our state-of-the-art clinical laboratories in the Health Sciences Building, refurbished athletic fields, contributed to establishing a named chair, or helped a student pay for school. You did that. So, this honor roll of donors is allowing me to publicly acknowledge and to thank You for the important difference you have made at this university.

A few UNC Pembroke supporters are being profiled in this honor roll. They have different reasons to give to UNC Pembroke. Some attended UNCP in the past; some are friends who support us because they know a college degree builds the economic success of a region.

But they – and everyone on this list – share one thing in common. They and you are the singular reasons The University of North Carolina at Pembroke can continue to achieve great things.

And so, I thank you ... YOU ... for all you have done for UNC Pembroke.

Kyle R. Carter, Ph.D. Chancellor

CHANCELLOR 2

What a year it has been at UNCP!

As Chancellor Carter stated in his letter, our generous support system – our alumni and friends listed in this document – is the reason for the great things continuing to happen on and around our campus. This amazing group of people help our students continue to be successful, and many times overcome the odds to do so.

Since Dr. Carter brought me back to UNCP, my alma mater, I have seen this support system continue to grow. We have been challenged to set new goals and make new connections, while strengthening existing relationships. Our office has made it a top priority to grow this important group of supporters.

In the past year, we have expanded our reach and have felt the warm embrace of our alumni, from Florida to Maryland to California. These connections will continue to grow and make us stronger. They will create a ripple effect and help us spread the story of UNCP.

We have also continued to bond with our local community here in Robeson County. Receptions sponsored by local businesses in Lumberton and Pembroke are reflective of the strong local support that exists for UNCP. The Entrepreneurship Incubator will create a physical presence for UNCP in downtown Pembroke, encouraging our faculty, staff, and students to spend more time in town – resulting in even more connections.

As your support continues to grow – far beyond where it currently stands – we will accomplish even more. This will all be thanks to you.

Garry Henry Endowed Scholarship for Cross Country

A fter reading a local Greer, S.C., newspaper article on Ed Crain, I decided to attend Pembroke. Ed was from a nearby high school and was the track and cross country coach at Pembroke State University. At the time, I was working the third shift in a print mill and knew I didn’t want to do that the rest of my life. I really enjoyed running the 110- and 440-yard hurdles and have a lot of great memories of wonderful people. It’s funny how the best memories are often the ones that don’t cost a thing. After graduating, I taught high school English and coached track and cross country. Along the way, I retired from the South Carolina National Guard and earned a master’s degree in creative writing. When my wife, Mimi, created an endowment to honor her mother, it caused me to remember Garry Henry, an all-American runner for us. Garry was an incredible guy and one of the most authentic people I’ve known. So, I created a cross country scholarship in his honor. Call it nostalgia or longing, or just appreciating where I came from. I had not visited Pembroke in 35 years. My younger brother, who is also a graduate, and I came back for homecoming. The university has really changed, and it was nice to get back, meet new people and see some old friends. I met Tim Sigmon, the first recipient of Garry’s scholarship. UNCP has a strong core of runners, and Tim’s done well. I also enjoyed meeting Chancellor Carter. I feel honored to promote the scholarship and the university.

M y first goal with this scholarship is to honor my daughter, Anne Marie, who died in 2012. With the scholarship, I want to help an upper level chemistry major at UNCP. A couple of great teachers helped me along the way. It was not easy; I was pushed. I hope I was that kind of teacher, and this scholarship will help another student.

The best part about teaching here for 40 years was the great students I had. Many were first generation college students – like I was – and they went on to be very successful in medical school. UNCP has always been known for great teaching. When students leave here, they know the material and can perform at a high level. I’m really proud of that. When all is said and done, I want to create a perpetual tribute for Anne Marie, this great school and its students.

In 1980, Chancellor (Paul) Givens called me and came to my office. We had a nice chat, and he asked me to get involved with the university. I had a long talk with Faye, and we concluded the university was a very important part of the community. We also liked the idea of supporting young people. So, we joined the Chancellor’s Club. Since then, UNCP and my family grew, and we’ve enjoyed being part of a successful university. I’ve served on the Board of Trustees for three chancellors, Joe Oxendine, Allen Meadors and Kyle Carter. One of the great experiences I had was serving on the search committee to hire the first football coach. When I met Pete Shinnick the first time, I knew he was the right man for the job. Pete did a great job, and football has been wonderful for the growth of the university. In the 34 years I have been involved with UNCP, a lot of good things have happened. Everybody has a lot to be proud of at this school.

M y father, Walter Pinchbeck, was a Cree/Shuswap Indian from British Columbia. He was an orphan who hoboed across America starting at age 18. While serving in the U.S. military, he heard about Pembroke from a fellow soldier who was Lumbee. He got off the train in Pembroke with 37 cents in his pocket. He fell in love with my mother, Bertha Lowry, and they were married in 1937. My father was a very talented man, and he found a home in Pembroke.

My father became superintendent of buildings and grounds of the college in 1939. He had a big impact on this campus. My father looked out for students. He drove the athletic bus and would find ways to get pocket change for athletes on their road trips. We lived on Faculty Row for 20 years. Four of the six children were born on campus. It was a wonderful place to grow up and a wonderful place to get an education. I had a music scholarship and played piano for the choirs, chapel and wherever they needed me. Those were great times at the college; you knew everybody. After graduation, I taught music and primary education in Richmond, Virginia, and returned to Pembroke in 1974. I was the first Indian teacher at Knuckles Elementary School in Lumberton. I was the principal at Janie Hargrave and then Tanglewood for 10 years before retiring in 1998. My degree from the college was recognized wherever I went. I always felt like I was prepared for anything that came along.

Living next to the university, I always felt a part of it. My husband, Ed, and I attended many, many events. I have a lot to be proud of here. The maintenance

building is named for my father. We sold the land that the football stadium is on. I am especially happy to have planted the seed with my cousin, Esther Maynor, about giving to the university. The Honors College is named for her. This year, I decided to establish two scholarships, in music and American Indian Studies. The

Music Department is like a conservatory. It prepares students for all types of careers. My gift to American Indian Studies will expand scholarship and provide opportunities for students. This university has a wonderful history. My scholarships are about its future. I believe it will be a great future.

was on fire. My father only finished the seventh grade, but he was a strong believer in education. He encouraged my mother to go to college. After graduating, she taught for 20 years in Hoke County and finished her career in Robeson County. From early on, I knew I was going to go college.

M y parents, Baker “Bocka” Locklear and Rosette Oxendine Locklear raised my brother, William “Laird,” and me in the Prospect community. My father worked second shift at J.P. Stevens in Wagram. He’d get to bed after midnight and then wake up at 5:30 a.m. to farm.He sharecropped and worked like he

At Pembroke State, I was always in the chemistry and biology building with David Brooks, Curt Locklear and Herman Chavis. I planned on being a science teacher because that was the career I believed was available to us then. When we heard Joseph Deese was accepted to medical school, I thought, “I’m just as smart as he is; if he can do it, so can I.” We didn’t know how to apply to medical school. Timothy Brayboy, a counselor at Pembroke State, called UNC-Chapel Hill, and they put Herman and me in a pre-med program. We were two of the youngest students in the medical school. It took some time for us to catch up. We did very well. Herman finished first in the class and I finished second, so they admitted us to medical school. From the start, Herman and I had agreed to open a practice together when we finished our residencies.

When I was a college student, I worked 48-52 hours a week and wasn’t able to participate in extracurricular activities. All four of my children are graduates of UNCP and were able to enjoy the other things that university has to offer. My stepson is currently a student in the Music Department. My son, Brandon, is an OB/GYN in Lumberton. My daughters, Andrea and Charlene, practice family medicine in Lumberton and Brittany works at our Parkton office.

When my wife, Michelle, and I were contacted about the Southeast American Indian Studies Endowment, we thought it was a good thing to contribute to. We believe it will do great things for the school, county and the region. We attended the open house for the new office and were very pleased. Giving back is important, and this is how we chose to do it.

U.S. Air Force

General Allen Jamerson Scholarship for Aerospace Excellence

I t was an incredible moment for the Jamerson family when I delivered the 2014 commencement address for my alma mater, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. I have enjoyed many proud moments during my Air Force career, and that road to success began in Pembroke with criminal justice and social work degrees, and a commission as an Air Force second lieutenant. The advice I offered the graduates was to be true to who they are, and to remember where they came from. In other words, I told them to “do what brung ya!” Pembroke is definitely a pillar of my life and career, as it is for every alumnus of this outstanding university. Pembroke kick-started my journey to the stars!

I told the graduates their degrees were just the beginning of a lifetime of learning. I also stressed the importance of protecting their professional reputations at all cost, something that is so hard to build and yet so easy to ruin. I drove home the point by telling a story about an undergrad who made a serious error of academic judgment. A Pembroke professor gave that student a break, and that student went on to earn two PSU degrees and enjoy a successful career serving this great nation. That learning moment taught me a valuable lesson, as powerful as any academic experience I had on campus. The professor’s compassion, good will and concern was a tipping point that set me on the positive path to a wonderful career in the world’s greatest Air Force. It all started at Pembroke!

My life certainly could have taken a different path had I not returned to Pembroke. I am truly grateful that UNCP gave me that opportunity. To recognize the role this university had in building my foundation, I established an endowed scholarship for UNCP students enrolled in the Air Force ROTC program. It is my

hope that scholarship recipients will use this resource to propel themselves to a lifetime of service. Most importantly, this was my small way of encouraging students to blaze their own success trails and then, when the opportunity presents itself, pay it forward so the next generation can do the same.

“It is evident that privately-funded scholarships will make the difference for student success and the success of the university going forward,” Lowery said. “We will continue to focus on bringing our alumni and friends closer to the university. We hope to build on our success from last year, a year that saw the establishment of 26 new endowed scholarships, 17 by alumni.”

STEPHENSON NAMED POET LAUREATE FOR NORTH CAROLINA

Professor Emeritus and poet Shelby Stephenson has been appointed North Carolina’s Poet Laureate by Gov. Pat McCrory. The governor could not have made a better choice. He is a pillar of North Carolina’s widely respected literary community.

In October, Stephenson was inducted into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame. He was described as “North Carolina’s poet.” For 32 years, until he retired in 2010, Stephenson encouraged students – as only he can – to write from the heart, and for 30 of those years, he edited Pembroke Magazine, UNCP’s literary journal. Many of the state’s top writers were among the magazine’s contributors. Stephenson also published groundbreaking editions of American Indian and Latino authors.

Stephenson is prolific with more than a dozen books, and he has not let up. Two of his poetry collections – “The Hunger of Freedom” and “Shub’s Cooking” – were published in 2014 by Red Dashboard Publishing of Princeton, N.J. He record-ed several CDs of music with his wife, Nin, family and friends, and is currently working on a new musical recording and a play.

ENROLLMENT, RETENTION STRONG

Freshman enrollment and total enrollment showed gains in the fall semester. The freshman class was 1,074-strong. It was the third largest freshman class in UNCP history.

Despite graduating more than 1,300 students last year, total enrollment grew slightly to 6,269. Retention, which has improved in three consecutive years, contributed to the success.

Transfer enrollment was “the brightest spot of all,” Chancellor Carter said. Transfer students set an all-time record, a year-over-year increase of 93 students. UNCP admitted 589 transfer students this fall.

“This success is most gratifying because of the amount of effort spent by so many UNCP people over the last 18 months,” Chancellor Carter said.

CARNEGIE: UNCP IS ENGAGED

UNCP is one of only 240 colleges and universities in the nation to earn the prestigious Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

The university earned the highest classification after achieving “outreach and partnership” status in 2008. UNCP’s elevated status reflects the university’s emphasis on classroom engagement through service-learning courses.

More than 2,350 students racked up more than 50,000 hours of community service in 2013-14. Nearly 900 students produced 11,075 hours of service in service-learning courses, which incorporate civic engagement and community outreach into the classroom.

Since 1970, the Carnegie Foundation has been the last word regarding classification of institutions of higher education in the U.S. Beginning in 2008, the foundation became the leading authority on community outreach and engagement.

NEW SCHOLARSHIPS SET RECORD

The Office of Advancement recorded 26 new endowed scholarships in 2013-14, a record! With average student debt of UNCP graduates hovering around $20,000, scholarships are always a top priority for university fundraisers.

University fundraisers enjoyed a good year taking in a little more than $1.8 million in 2013-14. But the record number of scholarships was especially pleasing for Wendy Lowery, vice chancellor for Advancement.

16 17

Givens Performing Arts Center was rated the 16th most outstanding collegiate performing arts center in the nation by Better Value Schools. Several publications, including U.S. News and G.I. Jobs, rated UNCP a veteran-friendly campus.

Scholarship and research continued to break new ground. The student and faculty-produced documentary video “Voices of the Lumbee” won two outstanding awards. Dr. John Roe’s research on ocean-going turtle migration made international news.

Dr. Ben Bahr’s research on neuro-degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, won a $100,000 Rotary grant and two grants, totaling nearly $700,000, from the Army to study traumatic brain injury.

Two new grant programs, totaling more than $1.6 million, are providing much-needed student scholarships for training in science and internships in mental health social work.

The university’s goal of becoming “carbon neutral” took a step forward on Earth Day 2014 when Chancellor Carter signed the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment. A Campus Garden, Zipcars, tree planting and a solar electric car-charging station have showcased UNCP’s growing committment to sustainability.

The Entrepreneurship Incubator is a signature achievement and a game-changer for university outreach to the region, said Chancellor Carter.

Four years in planning, a groundbreaking ceremony was held in October for the Entrepreneurship Incubator at 202 Main Street in Pembroke. It will house the university’s two existing small business development units and can nurture 8-12 new businesses at a time. Located in downtown Pembroke, the 16,800 square-foot storefront is expected to open in August 2015.

UNCP’s entrepreneurial spirit was on full display putting this project together. A combination of federal, foundation and private funds – totaling $1.34 million – made this project a reality.

Chancellor Carter said good things are in store in the storefront. It represents an organic model of economic development. It will also be good for students, who will get hands-on experience with business start-ups.

Rankings, Research, Grants, Scholarship Soaring to New Heights In surveying the outstanding accomplishments of 2013-14, it is tempting to let go of UNC Pembroke’s claim as the best-kept secret in higher education. This is a university that has arrived in virtually every way.

As the new year dawned, the men’s basketball team had broken into the national rankings, and the wrestling team had climbed to 13th in the nation. Not to be forgotten, the Braves put more student-athletes on the Peach Belt Conference’s 2013-14 Honor Roll than ever in history.

In other rankings, UNCP keeps popping up in good places. The university’s overall ranking in U.S. News & World Report’s popular college rating service has climbed to 42nd among public master’s granting universities in the South.

The university landed on U.S. News’ top 10 most affordable universities for in-state students. The Master’s of Public Affairs (MPA) program was among the top five most affordable in the nation, and the online graduate Elementary Education Program ranked 78th.

income yields will give the Federal Reserve ample cover to begin raising interest rates. Internationally, there are lingering European political concerns; however, European and Japanese economic data support that both economies are still in the nascent stages of their recoveries and should provide ample investment opportunities. The endowment’s asset allocation targets are as follows:• Money Markets: 7%• Fixed Income: 22%• Alternatives: 15% (Hedge Funds and Private Equity)• Equities: 56% These investment strategies and targets were approved by the UNCP Investment Committee based on the recommendations of our fund managers at the time. During the past year, the UNCP Foundation provided more than $950,000 to vital programs and scholarships in support of the university’s strategic goals. The foundation will continue to pursue its goal of structuring an investment program to provide future generations of UNCP students with private financial support. With the help of generous donors like you, we will be able to reach our goal.

The past year was excellent for the university and its foundation, as the endowment continues a trend of impressive double-digit percentage growth. As of June 30, 2014, the combined university and foundation endowment totaled $21,153,758. This reflects growth of over $2.94 million or 16.2% for the endowments in the 2013-14 fiscal year. While the recovery is in its mature stage, the Morgan Stanley’s Global Investment Committee is of the opinion that we are still in the expansion phase of the economic cycle. Earlier this year, the UNCP Investment Committee made moderate changes to its asset allocation model. Due primarily to an assumption for interest rate normalization and lower returns among all asset classes over the next seven years, the committee increased the strategic allocation to equities and alternatives while lowering the endowment’s exposure to fixed income investments. Within equities, the committee recommended a shift toward international equities, particularly increasing the endowment’s exposure to Japanese, emerging and frontier markets. While the U.S. continues to lead the global recovery, U.S. equities appear to be fairly valued, whereas select international markets are undervalued and offer substantial value. The committee was of the opinion that falling oil prices and falling global fixed

DonorsThrough these turbulent economic times, it is gratifying to know that we have alumni and friends who remain dedicated to supporting scholarships, helping our students make the most of their UNCP experience, and providing the support to ensure that our most pressing needs are met. In fact, donors contributed over $2 million in private support to the university in the last fiscal year. Our supporters endowed 26 new scholarships this past year, and as a result over 350 UNCP students have benefited from privately-funded scholarships in 2014-15. The Arrowhead Scholarship, created in honor of our 125th Anniversary Celebration, was awarded to 22 students. Each prize was in the amount of $1,887 in remembrance of the yearwe were founded. The impact that this university has had and continues to have for thousands of people in Robeson County and across the state is profound, and it would not be possible without you. Please read through the list contained on these pages and take note of those who have paved the way for many to follow. We appreciate all that you, our generous alumni and friends, do to make the dreams of our students a reality.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the following donors for their generous contribution between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014.
