TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (11TH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST) AUGUST 16, 2020

From Fr. Nursey Collection Totals- August 8th & 9th

OF Masses $5,585.00 EF Masses: $1,140.00Total for the weekend collection: $6,725.00

Greetings everyone!

As you may very well be aware, on August 15th the Church celebrates the Assumption of Mary into heaven. Even before the resurrection of the dead at the end of time, Mary already has her body and soul in heaven. What a great privilege she has from God! This year's celebration of Mary's Assumption has just passed. Hopefully, however, you did not let it pass by you, thanking Our Lady for being the mother of God and our mother also.

Mary has great affection for each one of us. How often do you turn to your mother? Is Mary someone that is in your life everyday or just on occasions when you are reminded of her? Yet, every day she is with you, regardless of how much or how little you think of her.

If our mother is so deeply concerned about us, how much more is God the Father concerned about us. God is constantly with us. We should sincerely strive to be aware of this. We should try to put ourselves in His presence as often as we possibly can. St. Therese of Lisieux said that she did not think that she had ever gone more than three minutes without thinking of God. Is it that way with us? We should be striving for constant awareness of God.

Do you have any idea of how well you are doing with this? A very key way of realizing this is simply to see how much you pray. Are you talking to God throughout the day? When you are excited or happy are you immediately telling God and thanking Him? When something sorrowful, depressing or hurtful happens, do you immediately turn to Him looking for consolation? Another way that will help you realize how much God is in your life is to look at your conversations. How often do you speak about God or about the things of God? How often do you speak about Holy Mother Church or moral questions? Even when speaking of the basic things of life, such as cooking or school or work, how much of this is spoken in relation to God? Do you ever find yourself making statements such as, "If God wills, I would like to do such and such," or "praise God for that"? How much is God in our lives? We know that He is always there instructing us, guiding us, helping us and most certainly loving us. How much do we allow God into our lives? We allow Him to be active in our life by being mindful of Him and sincerely striving to serve Him and to love Him. If we do these things our entire lives will change. Things will upset us less and there will be greater peace in our souls. If we constantly realize that God is in charge of everything, that He loves us dearly and that nothing happens to us without His loving permission, then life gets a lot easier. Life is difficult and it always will be. That is the cross. But with God the burden gets lighter. It can even become sweet.

Sometimes prayer is difficult. This can be because the devil wants to distract us with vain thoughts and worldly concerns, but at other times it is actually a self inf licted punishment. If we live our lives not giving much attention to God, then when it comes to the point where we are willing to give Him just a few moments, our "busy" lives intrude our prayer. We are all meant for prayer, because prayer is communication with God. There is nothing greater than communion and, hopefully, ultimately union with God. So often the distractions in prayer come from our own faults. It is because in our daily lives we do not spend any time bringing our greatest friend, God, into the picture. So then when we begrudgingly give him a few moments, all the world that we have submerged ourselves in is still with us and it is much more difficult to pray.

Despite these challenges, persevere! Make a real effort to plunge yourself into God, living in Him and with Him all the time. When we do this, our prayer will become more delightful and our lives will take on greater meaning.

During these times, these particularly distressing times for some, draw close to God. After all, drawing close to God is the very purpose of our lives.

God loves you.

And so do I. -Fr. Nursey
