Say Thank You to Our Amazing Volunteers Help thank our wonderful 4-H volunteers during National Volunteer week April 12-18. Our 4-H volunteers have spent many hours organizing activities and events, donating their talents and knowledge in a project area. Everyone is encouraged to recognize our 4-H volunteers. Here are a few ideas to recognize volunteers: 1. Have youth and alumni write “thank you” notes to volunteers that have touched their lives. 2. Make a donation in the volunteers name to a local or national charity such as the Nebraska 4-H Foundation. 3. Send a thank you note to the volunteer and enclose a tea bag and en-courage them to sit back, put up their feet and take a well deserved break. Please find a way to thank our volunteers for the contributions that they have made to our 4-H program!

Global Youth Service Day Ready to make a difference? Then you've come to the right

place! Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world, and the only day dedicated to celebrating the power of young people. It's a time when young people and their adult men-tors plan community activities, volunteer projects, and celebration events to recognize the important work that young people are doing year-round. This year, Global Youth Service Day is April 17-19, 2015. Think about what the youth in your county can do to make a difference. Work with them to create a service learning project and register it with GYS and get national recognition. State Fair Book Updates & Changes The 2015 4-H State Fair book is available online at http://4h.unl.edu/nebraskastatefairbook. The Da-kota~Thurston County Fair book very closely follows the state fair book so as you begin thinking about your fair exhibits please feel free to check out the State Fair book. Our county Fair book will be available in May or early June.

4-H King & Queen Contest It's time to be thinking about the 2015 Dakota~Thurston County Fair! If you are between the ages of 14 and 19, you are eligible to compete for the title of 4-H King or Queen. We are trying to notify members earlier this year and we plan to conduct the interviews in June. If you are interested, please read through the rules and complete the entry form available online at http://thurston.unl.edu/dakota-thurston-county-fair. Favorite Foods Revue Contest

Get your silver shined up, the tablecloth pressed and test your favorite recipe. It’s time to prepare for the Favorite Foods Revue Contest. The contest will be held on May 6th at United Church of Pender at 7pm. Select and prepare a favorite recipe, plan a menu which includes a favorite food and a theme to go with it. Write the menu and recipe on a 4” x 6” card. Prepare a centerpiece and a place setting for one, on a standard size card table (you must supply your own card table). The favorite food may be displayed as the whole product or as one serving. Tables should be in place 30 minutes prior to judging. This contest is divided into Novice, Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions. This is subject to change based on the number of youth entering the contest, contest may be divided into Jun-ior and Senior Divisions. More information will be in the May newsletter.

Presentation Contest

The 2015 Presentation Contest will be held in conjunction with the Favorite Foods Revue on Wednesday, May 6th at 7:00 p.m. at United Church of Pender. All 4-H members are encouraged to prepare a presenta-tion this year at the contest. This is an excellent activity to showcase your talents. More information will be in the May newsletter.

Seeking Job Interview Contest Participants!

A contest will take place May 21st at the Regional Speaking Contest that pro-vides an opportunity to practice applying and interviewing for a job. The Interview Con-test will be held at the Lifelong Learning Center in Norfolk from 2:00-5:00p.m. Prior to the contest, contestants will submit a cover letter and resume written for one of the three job descriptions: Pet Shop Assistant, Teaching Assistant, or Insurance Intern. On the day of the contest, participants will complete a written job application and an inter-view. Youth are encouraged to highlight their 4-H experience in all aspects of the con-test. Winners of the Regional Contest will advance to State Fair where they will each receive $50. Registration form and required materials are due to the office May 9th.

4-H PASE/Life Challenge Contest Each summer, over 500 4-H'ers convene at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus to test their skills in animal science and family and consumer sciences during PASE (Premier Animal Sci-ence Events) and Life Challenge. Teens compete in a variety of different contests including: livestock, meats and poultry judging, livestock skillathon, livestock quiz bowl, life challenges and clover challenge. While on campus, young people have the opportunity to take part in faculty-led workshops, campus tours, and special sessions by UNL recruiters. This year the contests are June 29-30 at the UNL East Campus. Contact the Extension Office if you would like more information or would like to participate.

2015 Nebraska State Fair 4-H Culinary Challenge Contest The 4-H Culinary Challenge Contest will require youth will to demon-strate healthy decision making through nutrition, food preparation, menu plan-ning, and food safety, utilizing foods and nutrition curriculum. County teams of two 4-H members will have the opportunity to advance to the 4-H Culinary Challenge Contest, which will be held the first weekend of the Nebraska State Fair. A challenge ingredient will be selected each year, highlighting a Nebraska commodity-food product. The 2015 challenge ingredient is apples. For more information contact the Extension Office.

Youth Horticulture ID Contest The Northeast Nebraska Master Gardeners will be hosting a Youth Horticulture ID Contest at their annual Plant Fair & Market, April 24-25th. All youth ages 8-18 (before January 1) are encouraged to par-ticipate. Participation is free but all participants must preregister by April 17 by contacting the Nebraska Extension office in Madison County 402-370-4040. Prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in each of the age brackets. Contestants will be required to sight ID horticultural plants to the accepted common name. The list of possible plants and study guides are available at http://madison.unl.edu/theplantfair. Contest Details

Youth Volunteer Opportunity The Northeast Nebraska Master Gardeners could use your help. They hold an annual Plant Fair & Market at the Northeast Community College Chuck Pohlman Ag Complex in Norfolk and need volun-teers to help with getting the patron’s items out to their vehicles. Wagons will be available. The plant fair is Friday, April 24, 6:00-8:00 pm and Saturday, April 25, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Call the Nebraska Exten-sion office in Wayne County at 402-375-3310 by April 17 to sign up for a time that would work for you.

New Material: Yard Beautification and Grow a Beautiful Space Projects Are you responsible for part of most of the mowing at your home? Do you like flowers to beautify your year? Is your family planning to put in a pond or some type of water feature in your yard? If you answered yes to any of these questions you should check out the Yard Beautification of the new Grow a Beautiful Space projects. Why not get credit with your 40H projects for what you already have to do? These projects can lead you to a career that has great salaries and allows you to work inside and outside as well as being allowed to use your creativity. Yard Beautification is for 4-Hers in grades 3rd-7th. The Grow a Beautiful Space (age range 14-19) series is designed to teach youth how to recognize and create beautiful and functional landscapes. In addi-tion to landscape design, youth will discover career opportunities related to the discovery, use, and management of plants. Each unit includes an interactive youth manual and a leader’s guide. This series is sold as digital downloads.

Spring Affair—Plant Sale, Talks and All Things Garden Spring Affair, the Midwest’s largest plant sale and gardening event, will be Saturday, April 25, at the Lancaster Event Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 500 different perennials, herbs, grasses, trees, shrubs and other plants will be available. Plants available at the sale are selected for regional suitability, uniqueness, demand and are provid-ed by Bluebird Nursery, Inc., of Clarkson, Neb. Gardeners will find perennials, herbs, native plants, temper-ennials, vines and a variety of trees and shrubs—something for everyone. It is sponsored by the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum as an educational tool, fundraising event and to promote regional plants. Plant talks on planting, design and edible plants will be held throughout the day:

“Using and Cooking with Herbs” with Cindy Brison, extension educator in Douglas and Sarpy County, 10:30-11:00.

“Prairie Plants in the Landscape” with Mark Canney, park planner and ur-ban designer for Lincoln Parks and Recreation, 11:15-11:45. “Swiss Army Landscaping with Multi-purpose Plants” with Graham Herbst, community forestry specialist for the Nebraska Forest Service, 12-12:30. “Trees for the Home Landscape” with Justin Evertson, executive director for the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, 12:45-1:15. Plant experts will be available throughout the sale to answer plant and landscape questions and help shoppers find the “right plant for the right place.”

Admission to the sale is free. The plant sale; plant talks by noted plants people; educational booths; and vendors of garden art, sculptures, furniture and other items are all under one roof in Pavilion I, on the northeast edge of the Lancaster Event Center. Plenty of parking is available north of the building.

Save the Date for Ponca Day Camp Come get a taste of camp in your own backyard at this year’s 4-H Ponca Day Camp. It will be held at

Ponca State Park on Tuesday, June 23, 2015. All 4-H members and their friends ages 8-11 in Cedar, Dako-ta, Dixon, Thurston, and Wayne counties are invited to attend this hands-on camp. For complete registration/health statement please contact the UNL Extension Office in Thurston County. Registrations are due by Fri-day, June 12, 2015. 4-H Summer Camps Attention youth! Are you ready for a fun adventure this summer? Consider joining youth around the state for an awesome adventure. The 4-H camps are open to everyone between the ages of 5-18 (do not have to be a 4-H member). There are over 40 day and night camping programs and trips offered for youth to enjoy at the three locations (Halsey,

Gretna, and Alma). Families can register online or via mail. Online registration allows families to also complete the Nebraska 4-H Participant Permission and Health form online, as well as signing the code of conduct and the Youth Activity Safety policy form. Please contact the extension office for a camp bro-chure or visit the Nebraska 4-H Youth Development website at http://4h.unl.edu/4hcamps/4hcamphome. Register by April 15 and receive a 10% discount. Come make memories this summer at Nebraska 4-H Camps!!

Big Red Summer Academic Camps These career exploration camps are a chance for teens to ex-plore the UNL campus, meet people from across the state and country, spend time investigating an interest or potential career and have lots of fun! All Big Red Summer Academic Camps are overnight camps and youth will stay in the residence halls. Camp topic to chose from in-clude: App Development, Beef, Crop Science, Culinary Art & Food Science, Education, Engineering, Fashion Design, Filmmaking, Unicameral Youth Legislature and Veterinary Science. Livestock Judging Camp 4-Hers members ages 12-18 that are looking to perfect their livestock eval-uation and oral reasons skills will want to attend the Winners Unlimited Livestock Judging Camp at the University of Nebraska East Campus in Lincoln. This camp offers one-on-one instruction and is conducted by UNL Livestock Judging Coach, Brad Bennett and the 2015 Livestock Judging team members. Participants have two sessions to choose from, June 5-7 or June 10-12. Cost of the camp is $250 and includes meals, lodging and materials. Each session is limited to the first 35 registrants. State 4-H Camp Counselors Needed The Nebraska State 4-H Camp in Halsey, NE is in need of High School students who would be great role models for youngers kids this summer. As counselors you will be looked to: to guide, take care of, and have fun with the kids. Students are asked to be at counselor training this summer, then can sign up for the camps they would like to help with. If you are motivated, enthusiastic, care, and love the great outdoors this job is for you! For more information visit http://4h.unl.edu/4hcamps/summercampemployment.

Camperships Available As the camping season is right around the corner, we know many of you are receiving requests for assistance to offset camp expenses. Again this year, with the support of the Nebraska 4-H Foundation, we are able to offer a limited number of $100 camperships to assist families who may not otherwise be able to send their child to camp. You do not have to be enrolled in 4-H to request this support. If you know of somebody who might be interested in requesting a campership please have them contact the Extension Office. We will help them take the right steps and even give them a recommendation.

Nebraska Youth Range Camp - June 8-12 Students are invited to attend the 52

nd annual Nebraska Youth Range Camp

which will be held June 8 – 12, 2015 at the Nebraska State 4-H Camp in Halsey. Eligible students need to be between the ages of 14 – 18 that are interested in learning more about natural resource management. The Nebraska Youth Range Camp consists of a four-and-a-half day dynamic curriculum that appeals to students with a wide array of inter-ests including, but not limited to, rangeland management, conservation, ecology, animal science, and wildlife. With nearly 50 years to perfect and evolve this curriculum, every

student, no matter what prior experience they have, will learn substantial information that will help them become more aware of Nebraska’s most prevalent land use; rangelands. Financial sponsorship is available! Every student that attended last year received a substantial level of spon-sorship from local Natural Resource Districts or the Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition. Quality Assurance This year all 4-H and FFA members showing livestock of any variety (except horses) will need to go to the Quality Assurance website to update their certification. There will be NO Quality Assurance trainings in your 4-H clubs this year. Members showing: beef, sheep, goats, swine, rabbit, or poultry, will need to complete and pass 3 lessons in the appropriate age category. Be sure to complete the 3 lessons be-fore the June 1st deadline so the livestock ID sheets can be forwarded on stating you com-pleted the QA training requirements and are able to show. Nebraska youth can go to the course at http://campus.extensnion.org. If they have not registered for the course before, they can search for Nebraska Live-stock Quality Assurance and register using the enrollment key “Nebraska”, however, if they are already reg-istered, the course will appear in their course list. Questions concerning registration can be e-mailed to [email protected]. In order to keep the quality at the highest level and streamline the services offered, a $5 annu-al fee for all participants is being implemented.

Online Animal ID Forms

All animals that are being nominated for the 2015 Nebraska State Fair & Ak-Sar-Ben Stock Show (with the exception of Dairy & Horse) will be entered via an online ID form at http://livestockaffidavit.unl.edu/. Don’t forget all State Fair/Ak-Sar-Ben eligible Market Beef need to be entered online by April 15. All other species are due on June 15.

Companion Animal & Wildlife Career Day The Department of Animal Science and the School of Natural Resources is hosting a Companion Animal

& Wildlife Career Day on April 25th in the Hall County Extension office in Grand Island. This is a great op-portunity for students who have an interest in companion animals and wildlife to come and learn about UNL majors and careers in these fields. Northeast Nebraska 4-H Horse Show Make plans now to attend the Northeast Nebraska 4-H Horse Show on June 3rd starting at 4:00 pm. The show will be held at the Ridge Ranch Arena (Ray and Dorla Hermelbracht) near Homer, Nebraska. This show will feature a clinic like atmosphere with one on one interaction with the judge, and ribbons will be awarded to all riders. Roping and working ranch classes will begin at 4:00 pm with pleasure, horsemanship, reining, pole bending and barrel racing starting at 5:30 pm. A pre-registration fee of $10 per horse and rider and $5 for the roping and working ranch horse events is due by May 29th. Registrations will be taken the day of the show at $15 per horse and rider and $10 for the roping and working ranch horse events. 17th Annual Seward Calf Classic On April 11, 2015 at the Seward County Fairgrounds check-in for the Seward Calf Classic will begin at 8-8:30 am with the show starting at 10:30 am. Pre-registration form (due by April 9) can be found at sew-ard.unl.edu. Pre-entries are $30 per head with Show Day entries being $40 per head. 2nd Annual Papio Valley Market Broiler Show

Again this year, we will be having a market broiler show in conjunction with the Papio Valley Livestock Progress Show held at the Sarpy County Fairgrounds in Springfield. The show will be held June 27, 2015 with weigh in at 9 am in the Poultry and Rabbit Building. An entry fee of $5 is due the day of the show but 4-Hers enter the market broiler show much be signed up by April 10th.

Sheep & Goat Weigh In

The Sheep & Goat Weigh-In will be held on Wednesday, May 27th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the fair-grounds. If you plan to show market sheep and/or goats, they must be tagged at the weigh-in. Please read over the guidelines below for female sheep and goats. Scrapie Guidelines for Sheep and Goats - All female sheep and goats exhibited at the fair will need

to have the official USDA identification (scrapie tag). This applies both to market and breeding animals, re-gardless of age. Wethers do not need the USDA identification. The tag must be in place at weigh-in on May 27th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the fairgrounds. Canine Companions for Life 4-H Dog Expo – May 1 & 2 The Canine Companions for Life 4-H Dog Expo is an educational even that allows for youth to practice showing their dog and work on training techniques. This event will be held at the Adams County Fairgrounds on May 1 and 2. Youth can enter into practice classes including showmanship, obedience, agility and rally-obedience. The judges will walk through the class with the youth so that they understand what is expected of them and then youth are scored by the judge. There are also educational sessions interspersed during the day for youth to learn more about he care of their dog. Giving Your Best On-line Program (Keeping Youth Safe) Make plans to join a FREE, live web-based program designed for 4-H volun-teers, leaders, parents and youth development professionals. Five separate web-based programs are being offered to benefit science enthusiasts, 4-H volunteers and parents as they enroll in 4-H, hold 4-H club meetings and expand 4-H activities into their com-munities. Tractor Safety Training The 2015 Tractor Safety Training in this area will be June 15-16, at the fair-grounds in Wayne, NE. There will need to be at least 8 participants to hold the classes. Any youth 14 or 15 years of age who works on a farm or ranch other than his/her parents’ is required to be certified through a tractor safety course. Extension Educators and field special-ists will teach the 2-day courses. Cost for the course is $60, which includes all course materials, lunch both days and breaks.
