ack in the last Dark Age, and bythat I mean before everyone got
computers and an Internetconnection, would-be astrologers who
wished to see celebrity birthcharts mightbuy a large white book at their local occuit
bookstore called A Circle Book of Charts.'
Those were hard times, when you
couldn't google a celebrity birthdate or go
to astro.com and get the wheel displayed
in seconds - you had to trudge to a libraryor own an encyclopedia, and do all the
math yourself. Much easier to have Circle
Book, or so I thought.I recall being sorely disappointed in
Shakespeare's chart as portrayed there. Itseemed so sparse. Then I noticed thatwhoever edited Circle Book for unknovm
reasons decided to include in the chart
only planets known in 1564. That's right,Shakespeare lacked Uranus, Neptune,
and Pluto! So anyone whojudgedShakespeare's genius by that chart could
be forgiven ifthey started looking at Sir
Francis Bacon or Edward de Vere as the
real author of Shakespeare's plays.
Do we really think Shakespeare could
be accurately analyzed without Uranus,
the higher octave of Mercury? 2 At the
time I had no ephemeris for the r5oos, so
I could not look up what was missing, butit should be no surprise to learn thatShakespeare had a near-exact T / V,with the Neptune end conjunctVenus.
The man who understood Human Nature
so well and portrayed it so astonishingly
in play after play would have thatopposition. It didn't matter that Uranus
and Neptune were not yet known.
Nowfast-forward to this century, the
century of Pluto's Disenfranchisement byScience. I bet no astrologers on Earth
have stopped using Pluto in their charts.
What weL,ld you say if ! toLd
yeu there are mCIre Flutos?
rrsrLaa Ysrt rrJ Iru.rLrrruNL.
Perhaps some felt a little less enthusiasm
to find out what Eris meant, but isn'tPluto safely entrenched in your planetary
toolbox?
What would you say if I told you there
are more Plutos? And that any celestial
object approaching Pluto's size must be
taken into account as highly meaningful
and useful - maybe even critical for a
total picture of our psychological makeup,
the roles we play in society, and the
Earth's unfolding history of events?
Just as Eris must be a key player insolar system business since it is virtuallythe same size if not slightly bigger thanPluto, so too we must pay attention tosomething considered the third-largestobject in the Kuiper Belt. I'm talkingabout Makemake, a moonless world

Makemake's diameter is alound r,5ookm.Co-discoverer Dr. Mike Brorvn of Caltech
and his team spotted Makemake onphotographic plates on March 3r, 2oo5, aferv days after Easter. When the discoverylvas announced the following July, itsprovisional name rvas zoo5FY9, itsnickname Easterbunny. After the hooplaof Eris's failure to be judged a planet inAugust 2006 and the distastefi:I creationof the Dwarf Planet category, it lvas timeto name this large Drvarf. Brown wishedto rctain the Easter-ness of the discoverydate in his choice of a name, and limitedin nomenclature to creation gods, he
selected the Easter Island creator god
Makemake.
So what can Makemake do for us?
What does it mean? Some have
attempted plumbing the meaning ofMakemakethrough its mythologr. Such a
tack hasn't always proved fruitfirl. Whereare machines, technolory, and intellect inthe myth of Uranus? Where is theconnection to all living things in the
stories of Neptune? You must stretch and
use Neptune's sea rulership to puli in thatgreat synbol ofthe collective unconscious.
Regardless, early attempts at diviningM's meaning have focused on the mythicMakemake as chief god of Easter Island.A]ison Chester-l,ambert rvondered if thedistance of Easter Island could mean thatMakemake was remote from our Western
mentality and might onlybe useful inmundane chafis. e Chester-l,ambertfocused on the sea-faring naturr oftheEaster Islanders and their eventual
disappearance, to point out Makemake'spresence in the charts of Somali piracy
problems and ecological disasters,
arguing the latter might be similar to the
one that rviped out the Easter Island
inhabitants. She suggests that Makemake
could indicate a talent for navigation,
spread ofdisease, and the grorvth/reduction ofpopulations by disaster ordisease. Those qualities don't seem tohave a singular theme, although I mustgrant Makemake some connection with

piracy and disasters as I'll point out later.
On her rveb page "Introduction to the
Drvarf Planets, " Chester-Lambert
continuesrvith the sea theme byproposing that "fishing quotas and fishingstocks" are Makemakean. + Again, it ishard to see an underlying connection
behveen fishing, piracy, population
control, and disasters.
Mauriee Fernandez also postulates an
ecological connection to Makemake, and
anallzes its presence in the U.S. gulf oilspill as one example. 5 F-ernandez remindsus that Makemake was a bird god, whose
devotees lvould climb the steep cliffs on
the island to obtain eggs, a difficult rite ofpassage. Focusing on the egg as a key
sy,rnbol, he notes that Ivlakemake's
naming came just before the zoo8Olyrnpics, rvhich took place in China's
nervlyfinished, egg-shaped NationalCenter for Performing Arts. Egg
symbolism and China (and their state-mandated fertilitypolicies) lead him tosuggest Makemake has much to do withfertility. From there, Fernandez meditates
on the fate ofthe Eastern Islanders, andseems to echo Chester-Iambert's idea
that population growth (the fertiligy'eggtheory) and decimation (the fate of Easter
Island's humans) are important clues toMakemake's role.
Whije these are admirable attempts,
theyfall short of giving us the gist ofMakemake. Afterviewing over 1,2oo
charts of people and events for five years,
I would argue that Easter the Christian
holiday is abetter hint at Makemake's
role than Easter the pagan holiday ofbunnies and eggs, or the unfortunate fate
of sea-faring Easter Isianders. Myexperience plugging Makemake intocharts has revealed an exciting common
thread - one that has more to do lvithshock and surprise, the emotions that the
early-rising rvomen had that first Easter
rvhen, as the Bible describes, they arile:and saw the empty tomb of Jesus.
In case y,ou think my examples migh:include major contacts with Uranus, which traditionally signals'shock and

Benjamin Franklin (Janr7, 17o6 NS, ro:3oa.m., Boston, MAtr), OAM, Y EM. This
founding father of the USA was quite a
character in his personal life, but perhaps
his shocking womanizing, even in old age,
was not so uncommon for his time.
Literally shocking, however, was his
clever invention, the lightning rod.
Franklin also reportedly captured
electricity using a kite with a key attached
to it. While Franklin does have I / [<,which could account for his inventiveness,
and @/ lg if you allow almost a 1oo orb,
Franklin's work with electricity is more
akin to Edison's, and therefore these twoinventors confirm and support Makemake's
daim to being a type of supercharged Uramrs.
Why would we need'another'Uranus, you might ask. Most astrologers wouldprobably agree that Uranus' arrival was
the answerto too much Saturn - Uranus'
discoveryheralded the American and
French revolutions and the rise oftheIndividual, and it ushered in centuries ofthe key discoveries ofscience. Are we tounderstand that this new upstart,
Makemake, makes Uranus looktame,even saturnine?
Ofcourse no one would go that far, butif you think about it, isn't Uranus the
mainstream'universal mind'? What ofthose ideas that lie beyond themainstream? If Uranus is physics,
Makemake is quantum physics, literally. When German scientist WernerHeisenberg (V271tu15 3M21U 11) inr9z5 declared that quantum particles
behaved in a manner that was bothparticle-like and wavelike, Uranus cndMakemake were square one another, in
Pisces and Gemini respectively. AlbertEinstein ( 9 t6'f Sg dM teT+g), who had
the nerve to bring us warping spacetimejust 20 years earlier, was outraged, callingquantum mechanics absurd and unbelierable.
Of course he was upset. At the time, histheories were accepted and mainstream,
and QM was out-of-the-box thinking. The
As much as astrologers have sniffed at
the idea that Pluto is not a planet,
grouping the Kuipers together provides
valuable clues as to what these new large
objects are about. Pluto and cohorts are
outside the mainstream, outside the last'social'gas giant. Pluto tries to controi animanipulate because he has no societalll-granted power. Makemake is Intellectthat is outside society, outside the
mainstream. Sometimes thissupercharged Intellect is able to bringbenefits to society, from the lightning rod
at one end ofthe spectrxm to quantum
mechanics at the other. At other times, you have outbreaks of 'crad, ideas orenergr that cannot be easily absorbed and
are therefore labeled criminal or at least
undesirable by the society witnessing it.This theory pans out, as Makemake is
found in shocking crimes and startlingsituations, and people with Makemake do
surprise us with, if not criminal acts,
certainly unexpected behavior.
