HMV puts on oneH of a partyIt was a who's who of the Canadian musicindustry. There hasn't been this many musicpeople in one building since the Junos. Thechampagne flowed and little crab things in puffpastry were sent around et al. The pre -openinggala of HMV's flagship store at 333 Yonge St.,Toronto last Wednesday (May 1) definitelycaught the attention of the music biz as over650 industrialites were on hand to peruse andschmooze.

The store boasts over 22,000 square feetof retail space spread across four floors makingit the largest record store in Canada. Apart fromjust being big, the store also looks different. Forstarters, a massive 36 -screen video wall facesYonge St. on the outside of the building. Insidethere are performance areas on three floors, which is an important element of HMV's plansto make the store as much a musician's venue asit is a retail outlet. The stages were put to gopduse during the opening celebration with per-formances by Rik Emmett, Maestro Fresh Wes,Sue Medley, The Wayne St. John Choir, andColin James, who was joined by Sue Medleyfor a very hot performance.

The megastore also features 15 listeningposts where consumers can hear the albumsbefore they buy them. Some of the posts featurehot new records while others offer up to 50different tunes. There are dozens of videoscreens on every floor as well as disc jockeyson each level to play music of the customerschoice, and Pics Machines where customerscan listen to and watch 70 new songs. The thirdfloor has a special performance area with agrand piano for jazz and blues concerts as wellas classical performances. The list of extrava-ganzas is almost endless but with a stock ofover 100,000 different titles on cassette, CDand vinyl (if available), His Masters Voice(HMV) will set a milestone in the retail sector, which can only be healthy for the slumpingCanadian marketplace.

A special thanks is extended to Paul Alofsand the staff at HMV for a job well done and anevening that will long be remembered. Goodluck.

  • Mitsou video 'too hot' for English CanadaMitsou is back with her second release, TerreDes Hommes, and the second single Dis-Moi,Dis-Moi has caused quite a stir due to theaccompanying video, which shows anundressed Mitsou straddling a chair, while anassortment of nude men and women wash eachother in the background. Directed by Alain DesRochers and filmed on location in a Montrealarea bath -house, the video was meant to cele-brate the human body, but because of the nuditycontained, it has been refused airplay on thenation's music station.

Mitsou first started in music at age fifteenand had a fairly big hit with the dance numberBye Bye Mon Cowboy. Says Mitsou, "I knew Iwas going to be a singer one day." Unfortu-nately, it seems some people only want to seeher as a sex symbol and not as a serious artistand all the hub-bub about the video may onlyfurther this problem.

Seen above after her Interview at RPM, Mitsou with RPM's Pablo Fairhall

When making the video to the song, which, by the way, is a very catchy number thatshe co -wrote with Celine Laballe, Mitsou knewit would be a bit risque but says, "I never ex-pected this." It appears that MuchMusic hasbanned the video and it will stay that wayindefinitely. It was aired on Friday, April 26that midnight, but upon review by management at

The Radiothon, hosted by CHOO'sMorning Personality Mike Leaver, will featurea fun -filled six hour show of phone-in pledges, live entertainment, local celebrities and record-ing artists including The Hughes Brothers,Leeanne Allison, magicians and much more.

During the Radiothon, random chosenpledges will be given the opportunity to calltheir mothers, anywhere in Canada, to wish hera great day.

Much, it will remain banned, joiningMadonna's Justify My Love.

Not everyone feels the same as EnglishCanada, though. MusiquePlus, the French -lan-guage video channel, is playing the video quiteoften, where it debuted as their 'Buzz Clip OfThe Week' and the song is doing well on radio."It's incredible," says Mitsou, "because inQuebec it's #1 everywhere on radio and it's #1on MusiquePlus, which is MuchMusic, and afew miles away from there we can't even see it;so that's weird." She says that most of theresponse she's received from the public hasbeen good, too, and goes on to say, "Much -Music thinks that the public are not going tolike this video and I'm not so sure about that."

Mitsou sees her video as a work of art, ahomage to the human body and the one thingthat Mitsou doesn't want is to be compared toMadonna. "It's not really the same thing," sheexplains. "In Madonna's video there are valuesthat maybe people wouldn't like to see on TV,but I don't have any wrong values in that video, like sexism or violence." As Pierre Gendron, her manager and producer, has said, "Wewanted to use the human body like a painting ora sculpture, not to exploit it."

All the fuss aside, Mitsou is keeping verybusy and has embarked on tour that started inHearst, Ont. on May 3rd and she'll be visitingthe Opera House in Toronto on May 13th as shemakes her way across Ontario, hitting Quebecand ending her tour with a two -night stand atMontreal's Theatre St. Denis, May 15th and17th. -PF

Aussie power supreme as Farnham's album soarsby Ritchie YorkeLike the literal chain reaction its name encap-sulates, John Farnham's new album has rock-eted around the world, setting the stage foratiother masive triumph.

Moving on from the 1988 Age Of Reasonproject, Farnham and his producer Ross Fraserhave created a stunning collection of a dozennew songs, nine of which he had a hand inwriting. That's a bold step forward, bearing inmind that Age Of Reason contained noFarnham originals. It represents a milestone inJack's musical evolution - it shows that at 41years young, Australia's male vocalisthas welland truly come of age.

Farnham is bringing his music home in amanner and maturity that few would have pre-dicted or even pondered, and he's done it withstyle, subtely, class and even the clash of socialcomment. On a promo launch visit to Brisbane,Farnham remained as modest and disarminglyhonest as ever.

Deftly pouring an orange juice for hisinterviewer, Farnham smoothlyset the stage fora candid and convivial converstation. "I mustadmit, he quickly confesses, it's a pleasantfeeling to finally have the album out and run-ning. The feeling of anticipation before youdrop an album out there is absolutely terrifying.

It's always been the same whether it was 20years ago or a week ago.

"I'm very grateful that it's been acceptedso well thus far. It's very nice indeed and it'sgood that people are not comparing it withWhispering Jack or Age Of Reason.

"They are comparing it to the successthose albums had but they're not comparingthem musically. I didn't want to make Age OfReason Part 2 or Son Of Whispering Jack .. . Iwanted this one to be an entity in itself."

There can be no doubt that he's succeededin that objective. "The success of the two ear-lier albums," jack continued, "gave me theluxury of being able to sit down and say tomyself OK I'm gonna write some songs espe-cially for this record, with these people. I'm notgonna do the album until I've got some songsfor it. That was fantastic ... true freedom .. . atotal luxury. Fortunately the stuff came fairlyquickly in the rough time frame we'd allottedourselves. And we had the attitude that justbecause I'd written it, it didn't mean that weautomatically recorded it.

"We received an enormous amount ofmaterial from outside sources for this album, but I think we've picked the right ones out ofthe bag."

Chain Reaction's repertoire runs thegamut from poignant ballads to dizzying rock-ers to stunning chorale effects to biting socialcomment. Clearly Jack doesn't back away fromconfronting the planetary predicament head on. . . much to his credit.

"I had someone say to me the other night,"he nods, crossing his slinky snakeskin boots,"that they hated the message songs ... and I canlive with with that outlook. These songs aren't

"You can listen to the words and getinto deep dark meanings of them oryou can go and bang your head againsta brick wall listening to it."

necessarily written as message songs but ifthat's the way you take them then that's howyou take them. That's one of the real joys ofmusic to me. can take it or leave it. Or youcan take from it what you will - you can listento the words and get into deep dark meaning ofthem or you can go and bang your head againsta brick wall listening to it."

Having struck a notable nerve, we suggestthat any concerned human being cannot helpbut comment on what's going on around us."That's true," he agrees, "and music is obvi-ously the popular poetry of our time. Music hasalways been used throughout the ages as a formof social comment - right back to the bangingon the hollow log with a tree branch.

"To make musical comment on thosethings that are inflicting pain on people ormaking a mess of things somewhere is quitevalid."

One of the key new composing contribu-tors to Chain Reaction is Phil Buckle, guitaristwith the hot new Melbourne band, SouthernSons. Along with lead vocalist Jack Jones,Buckle also performs on the Farnham albumand will be part of his backup band on tour.

Farnham, to understate the case, is a big sup-porter of Southern Sons. "I think they're one ofthe best musical bands in the country," he saysadamantly.

"I didn't know Phil Buckle at all beforewe started this album. My producer, RossFraser, had done some recording with him andsuggested him as a possible songwriter. Philwalked into my house for the first time and Iinstantly liked him. We had a great rapportright away. The combination of Phil and Rossand myself felt very comfortable.

"The lead singer of the Southern Sons,Jack Jones, can really sing and he's cute too. He's only 19 and he looks like Tom Cruise withlong hair. My wife Milian and Gaynor Wheatley(manager Glenn Wheatley's wife) have bothfallen in love with young Jack. I'm going tohave to take him on the road and beat him up,"he laughs, adding "You'll have to excuse mysick sense of humour. Seriously, he's a verytalented guy,a fine singer and a nice lad. I can'thelp but predict big things for the SouthernSons in North America."

With current forthcoming albums andtours by leading heavyweights such as Barnsie,INXS and the Oils, Icehouse and AC/DC, Ozmusic couldn't be hotter this summer andFarnham insists he couldn't be happier, despitethe competition.

"It's very healthy," he grins. "Just think, only a few years ago - say five or six years back- the mere thought of Australian acts fillingauditoriums in this country was out of thequestion. Now, it's fantastic. It's so exciting. We're actually competing on a worldwide scalewith our music and that's fantastic. It's Austra-lian and it's great. I love that flag-waving stuff:it really appeals to me."

Optimism would surely reign supreme inthe ongoing adventures of this 1988 Ozzie ofthe Year as the Chain Reaction segment of hisepic career unfolds. "Yes I am the eternal opti-mist actually," he allows, "I get hell for itsometimes - I tend to see the good side ofeverything - and I really enjoy what I do. If thatshows, if nice offends, then stiff 'em.

"Right now I'm 41 and having enoughtrouble keeping up with what I'm doing now.Plus I'm having a lovely time doing it."(Ritchie Yorke, noted rock journalist, can bereached at 28 Oxford St., Wavel Heights,Brisbane, Queensland 4012, Australia or fax?61-7-371-5958)

  • COVER STORY - Pablo Fairhall

Young rapper brings format to maturityWhat is Kish, you ask? Kish stands for a youngrap artist who, at age 21, has received ravereviews from the moment his first release hitthe streets. With his single, I Rhyme The WorldIn 80 Days, getting airplay right out of the boxon stations like LG73 in Vancouver, CHED inEdmonton, CHUR in North Bay, CFTR inToronto and 990 HITS in Montreal (to name buta few) and chart action on RPM's Hit Tracksand Dance charts, plus a video that's doingwell, you could say rapper Kish has got theright stuff.

Andrew Kishino was born in Oakville,Ontario, to a Japanese father and a Britishmother and, having moved to Toronto at anearly age, grew up listening to a diversecollection of music with the emphasis leaningtowards dance. "I used to be into the SOS Bandand Earth, Wind and Fire," says Kish, "so thatwas sort of the focus of what I was interested in,so it was more of a natural progression fromthat music into rap." Kish goes on to explain,"You came into early eighties stuff like Zap,Rockwell and Prince and then it just wentdeeper, and since I was always involved with it,it wasn't that sort of thing where people hearsomething on a cross -over level and then digdeeper; it was always there for me."

Not only was the groove always there forKish, but also the background in music theoryand the ability to tackle almost any instrumentthat came his way. "My dad and my mom wereadamant that I get a proper musical education,so they said that I should be trained as a classi-cal pianist." As a result, Kish reads music andcan play piano, trombone, clarinet, flute, violinand bass.

Dispelling the notion some people have ofrappers not being musically talented, Kish says

LIVENT announces Cera as new DirectorGarth H. Drabinsky, Chairman of The LiveEntertainment Corporation of Canada(LIVENT) and Manager of The PerformingArts Centre of North York, announced onMonday, April 29, the appointment of StephenCera as Director of Concert Music Program-ming for LIVENT effective immediately. Hisresponsibilities include development of con-cert series for The Performing Arts Centre ofNorth York scheduled to open in the fall of1993.

The Centre will showcase the entire spec-trum of classical and modern music, from sym-phony orchestras and chamber groups to recit-als by world renowned soloists and jazz con-certs.

The Performing Arts Centre's 1000 -seatRecital Hall will be the focus of much of Mr.Cera's programming activity. Modelled onAmsterdam's Concertgebouw Theatre andVienna's Grosser Musikvereinsaal, this one -balcony Recital Hall, with an acousticallysuperior environment designed by RussellJohnson, will be unique to Canada and reflectthe influence of the best of Europe's concertsettings.

Stephen Cera , a native of Winnipeg,

a lot of rappers show amazing talents in thestudio. "All you see is them on stage," he says,"and people have this stereotypical image of ablack guy with a flat -top, folding his arms anda fat gold chain that could give an 18 wheelertraction in a blizzard and they say, yeah, wellthat's rap." He goes on to say, "For the sake ofbusiness, the more musically diverse you arethe more of a chance you stand in the market of

making a competitive product."To call Kish's debut, Order From Chaos, a

competitive product is an understatement. Af-ter producing a demo with the help of D.J.Extacy of Toronto's CKLN, Ron Nelson andthe crew at Beat Factory Studios, he wassnatched up by A&M Records who, with thekeen ear of Promo Rep Faisel Durrani aidingthem, recognized his commercial potential. The album's eleven tracks emphasize Kish'srespect for sophisticated rhyme and the dualaspects of socially relevant commentary and acool dance beat. Whether you listen to StrictEconomics, Tightrope, Shogun, I Rhyme TheWorld... or She's A Flirt (Let's Do It ), you'llnotice a real street feel that's quite infectiouswith a crisp vocal style. With producers Peterand Anthony Davis co -writing, Kish haspenned some pretty funny, blunt and thought -provoking stuff; some of which was written instudio just prior to recording. The ability tocreate so quickly comes from a sort of gameknown as freestyling where, right off the top ofyour head, you start rhyming about anything atall and this creates a flowing mentality.

Kish is managed by Farley Flex whorepresents a strong force in the Canadian dancemarket. But don't be fooled by the recent waveof Canadian rappers on the radio because rap's

brings an international perspective and broadrange of skills to his new role. Since 1985, hehas served as a producer with CBC RadioMusic, where he also contributes on -air com-mentary to the CBC Stereo Network. He wasclosely involved with CBC's special coverageof the 10th Harvey Leeds International PianoCompetition from England last september, andthe new production of Wagner's Ring cyclefrom the Bayreuth Festival in Germany. As aproducer, Cera developed the CanadianOrchestral Sampler, among others, which wonaFinancia1 Post Award for Business in the Arts.

Before joining the CBC, Cera served forseven years as the Music Critic of the BaltimoreSun. His commentaries on music have beenpublished in The Wall Street Journal, LosAngeles Times, Musical America, andCongressional Quarterly.

Cera has also been active as a concertpianist and has performed as soloist with TheToronto Symphony and other orchestras inCanada and the U.S. He also holds a Master ofMusic degree from the University of Southern

California, and a Bachelor of Arts from Po-mona College in Claremont, California.

    F1PM - May 11, 1991 - 7

been here for years. "People chose not to payany attention to it," says Kish. It just took a goldsingle from Maestro Fresh -Wes to wake a fewpeople up. Now wide awake, Canada has lots oftalented rappers to watch for like Michie Mee,Dream Warriors, D -Shan, HDV, KGB,and.Maestro among a host of others.

Kish's first single is a chart -climber andShe' A Flirt (Let's Do It) is slated as a secondsingle, leaving him saying, "My parents recog-nize me when I come into the house now." Hedoes have one last thing to tell other aspiringyoung rappers, "Be positive and don't shun theadvice of people because whether or not some-one has something constructive to say, you canlearn from it. If you're in school, stay with Eng-lish because it's essential to functioning as arapper." Yo! That's a rap.

R.E.M. A.O.K. Out Of Time, from R.E.M.,tops the Albums chart. It's their second albumfor Warner Music. Their first, Green, peaked atNo. 14 in 1988 and yielded the song Stand, which hit No. 8. The first track from Out OfTime, Losing My Religion, ironically lands atNo. 8 this week.

Learning the ABC's ... Other artists usingonly letters or initials joining R.E.M. on thecharts these days are INXS and EMF, althoughINXS does sound like areal word. What was thelast artist using only letters or initials in thename to hit No. 1 on the Albums chart.

Slow and steady! Acosta/Russell's NeverChange My Mind climbs to No. 17 in its 14thweek on the Hit Tracks chart. It has been gain-ing adds and inching its way up charts for thepast three months, including reaching No. 1 atCHVR in Pembroke, Ontario. It still has achance to go all the way. In 1987, Heart AndSoul from T'Pau didn't reach No. 1 until it 15thweek.

The flip side. Mariah Carey's I Don't WannaCry cracks the Top 10 in just its fourth week, and Michael Bolton's Love Is A WonderfulThing hits the Top 20 in its third week. Both ofthose songs have a chance to reach No. 1 in lessthan eight weeks. The last song to hit the topthat fast was Phil Collins' Another Day InParadise, which did it in its seventh week. In thelast five years, only two songs have reachedNo. 1 in six weeks: Billy Vera And The Beaters'At This Moment did it in 1987 and Madonna'sPapa Don't Preach in 1986.

MD's corner . . . Dave Schneider, MD ofCHYM in Kitchener, Ontario, who is vocal inhis support for the likes of Mae Moore, TheNorthern Pikes, and Glass Tiger, offers thislittle anecdote; Why do people want to getinvolved in the music business .. ? Is it becausewhen they were little, their parents put theswing set too close to the house?

Oh how soon they forget. The last artistusing only letters or initials to hit No. 1 on theAlbums chart is AC/DC. They were at No. 1 justlast December with their current album, TheRazors Edge.

  • telliwneetQ: What are the Big Country Awards ?A: An annual banquet, held on Sunday eve-ning, at which time the award winners arerevealed and awards presented. This eveningevent is is not to be confused with the VarietyClub Luncheon saluting the Big CountryAwards, which will take place on the Fridayprior to the actual Big Country presentation.Q: How are the nominees picked?A: Nominations are based on chart action inRPM over the previous year. The ballots aremailed to all RPM subscribers. This gives usa very good mix of voters and makes itimpossible for blocks and pockets to controlthe voting. The winners will be known onlywhen the envelopes are opened onstage at theactual awards banquet.Q: Will the awards feature musicalperformances ?A: No. The dinner will be followed by theawards ceremony at which time the presenterswill open the envelopes and announce thewinners. The whole event is designed to be an

industry get together and it is a uniqueopportunity for the heavyweights in the industryto get to know one another and possibly do adeal. One night set aside for the industry. It's

very unique.Q: How many categories are there ?A: Exactly one dozen (12). The Big CountryAwards are very coveted awards and are notgiven out in large numbqrs. They carry a great

deal of prestige for the industry.Q: Will there be meetings andconferences tied into this event ?A: No. We believe there is much going onnow, and there's no further need for additionalconferences.Q: Isn't $100 per person a littletoo expensive for a banquet ?A: Once you paid the $100 (plus GS T), you'vepaid it all. There are no other charges fordrinks, coat checking or dinner wine. Theevening will be a posh affair in a very elegantsetting designed to bring prestige to theCanadian country industry. It's an event forthe industry. Once a year we get together for,a very special industry evening. Your pay-ment will be confirmed to you by telephoneand FAX and your table arrangements will behanded to you at the door (there are no tickets).Cocktails are at 7 pm and dinner is at 8 pm.Dress elegantly but not black tie.Q: Is it possible to reserve a table?A: Yes. Tables of 8, 9, or 10 can be reservedahead, if you get a group together and arrangethat they will all pay in adavnce. Mail all thepayments in the same envelope. We musthave all the names in advance.Q: Will it be possible to pay at the door?A: Definitely not! For an event of this kind, advance planning makes it impossible to arrangeany additional meals. You must be confirmedat least four days prior to the banquet.
