Dear People of God, As part of the world-wide celebration of The Word called for by Pope Francis, I’ve been high-lighting a few interesting facts about the Bible. I mentioned that the Book of Genesis is a collection of short oral stories told to respond to universal human questions. Every culture has asked them; in fact, if you watch the Science Channel, Discover, TLC, and others, we’re still trying to answer many of those same questions. Of course, the answers given by each culture reflect the cultural biases of that culture; for the He-brews all the answers in one way or another will get back to one God who chose one people because he loved them. This foundational thread can be seen in even the darkest of stories. There are key questions everybody asks because everybody wants the an-swers so everybody can ultimately know “who we are.” Here is a partial list of those key questions: Where did all this come from? How did we origi-nate? Why are we special? Why are we different from our neighbors? Why is our language differ-ent? Why does evil exist? What comes after we die? How does the divine function?

If we’re the “top of the line,” why do lions, tigers and bears eat us? What’s “out there” in the sky? You might reflect on how you asked these questions in your own way and how someone - your parents, your teachers, your church - answered them. I remember having dinner with Mercey Eli-ade, one of the experts at the Vatican II Council (you can look him up on Formed - see the bulletin info to get free access). I was on the hospitality committee in college; among our duties was picking up our spe-cial guests, getting them to the hotel, and taking them to dinner. Given that I went to college in Hou-ston at the height of the Apollo program (our biology department sent some experimental items to the moon on several voyages), I asked Eliade: “Did the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross save everybody “out there” or did God have to workout salvation for each stellar culture? He answered: "Well, Chris, I sup-pose we’ll have to wait until we get there to find out, eh?” He was positive that our quest for the answer would lead us to the discovery of how to get “out there” to find out. It appears that we are still on that age-old quest. Fr. Chris

The Celebration of Sacraments

Infant Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism is regularly celebrated on Sunday during or after the Eucharistic Liturgy. Registered parishioners are asked to arrange for the Baptismal Preparation Class and the Liturgical Celebration by calling the Parish Office.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: RCIA is the process of growing in your faith and love of God. Weekly gather-ings take place from September until Easter. If you are interested in learning about Catholicism and joining us please call Deacon Tom at the rectory. Penance: The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at IC, 9:30 a.m. at HSP and 10:30 a.m. IC every Sunday or by appointment.

Matrimony: Anyone planning to be married must contact the parish at least six months in advance. The exact date and time of your wedding should not be determined until after consultation with a priest or deacon. If either party has previously been civilly or religiously married, the Presider is not permitted to set a date for the wedding without resolving the previous marriage.

Pastoral Care of the Sick: When a parishioner is admitted to the hospital, nursing home, or confined to home because of age or infirmity, please call the Parish Office. Parishioners are ready to visit and to bring Holy Communion. When one is seriously ill, the healing Presence of the Lord should be requested in the Sacrament of the Sick.

In the event that you are in need of a priest or deacon and there is no one in the office: Please try the emergency number at 419-243-6031 or call Deacon Tom on his cell phone at 567-686-4167 and leave a message with your phone number and he will return your call as soon as possible.

AngelsAngelsAngelsAngels We should also know the protection of St. Michael the Archangel. He ap-pears in Scripture as the special guardian of God’s people in the Old Testament (Dan 12:1) and the New (Rev 12:7). The church has always recognized St. Michael’s role in the spiritual combat. He is invoked as a warrior against the devil and all rebel angels. Pray to St. Michael is espe-cially powerful when we need deliver-ance from evil. For many years this traditional “St. Michael Prayer” was recited at the end of Mass and is being done now in most churches. Many Catholics retain it as part of their regu-lar devotions: St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into help Satan and all other evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of Souls. Amen. We have been asked by a number of people if we could offer gluten free host. As of February 16, 2020 there will be a special communion station distrib-uting low-gluten (3.3 ppm) host back by the small pulpit in front the St. Pat-rick’s library. There will be a sign-up sheet by the library in back of the church on the pulpit if you are in need of low gluten host. This will help us prepare each week for this need. According to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, “only low-gluten (partially gluten-free) hosts are valid matter, provided they contain a suffi-cient amount of gluten to obtain the confection of bread without the addi-tion of foreign materials and without the use of procedures that would lat-er the nature of bread. If you have any questions please call the parish office at 419-243-6452 or see Nancy Rank.

Last Sunday there was an unfortunate mix-up in the Readings at Mass. The Sunday Lectionary was properly set for the 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time; However, the daily Feast of the Presentation was to be used. Those readings are not in the Sunday Lec-tionary. By the time the error was dis-covered it was time to begin Mass. Our apologies to the lectors, organist and choir, and the parish for the mis-take. Steps are being taken to prevent this in the future. Msgr. Chris
