A two-page magazine spread created in Adobe InDesign using body copy and photographs supplied by another student. I used Photoshop to crop and edit the images and decided on type style and creative use of copy and images.

Adobe Illustrator was used to create a personal logo. Alternate logo choices and portions of a style sheet are also included.

This resume, which was created in Adobe InDesign includes only my most recent work and educational experiences and association memberships. References and additional information will gladly be supplied upon request.

PosterInDesign was used to create a poster from a quotation which is one of my favorites because it so aptly describes my brother.

Bethany Sebestainspiration

from a summer internship

By Fawn Kurtzo

What do you want to do after you graduate with a bachelor’s degree? Bethany Sebesta, a senior horticulture student of the Dale Bumper’s College, was planning to pursue

a master’s degree, until a summer internship opened a new door in her life.

“[The internship] really inspired me to try other facets of horticulture,”

Sebesta said.

“[The internship] really inspired me to try other facets of horticulture,” Sebesta said. “To gain experience through a hands-on working experience.”

“I worked for Naturipe Berry Growers Inc. at the cultivar development ranch, known as Pacific Berry Breeding LLC., from June 25 through August 16, in Watsonville, California” said Sebesta.

Sebesta worked with blackberry and raspberry plants on the PBB ranch.

“I assisted the field crew with daily tasks and carried out special projects assigned by the head breeder,” said Sebesta.

Sebesta claimed the internship was a great experience because she: gained skills, had outstanding experiences and it gave her horticultural passion a new direction.

Sebesta was introduced to Ellen Thompson, the head breeder of PBB by her advisor, Dr. Clark,

while she was working with a blackberry research project through the University of Arkansas campus.

Sebesta described why this internship was a great experience due to the change of atmosphere and hands-on horticulture application.

“I am someone who can easily adapt; I like to experience new things every day,” said Sebesta.

“I truly enjoyed the opportunity to apply the horticultural knowledge gained through the program each day at PBB,” said Sebesta. “[This] provides a perspective that a theoretical knowledge cannot.”

Sebesta’s internship activities included organizing and conducting a sensory panel, yield analysis, assisting in gathering information for cultivar patenting, post-harvest analysis and assisting the breeding technician.

“The sensory analysis project I conducted compared a few of PBB’s elite raspberry selections to a store bought selection developed and sold through the Droscoll’s company,” said Sebesta. “The ballot asked the panelists to rate appearance, flavor and texture of the fruit. Then describe which selection was a favorite.”

“Primarily we were doing harvest and yield calculations,” Sebesta stated.

“One of my assignments was to collect botanical data for patent applications,” said Sebesta. “This involved taking measurements of plant parts

and recoding plant attributions such as color.”

“Post-harvest analysis was done on a regular basis. The raspberry and blackberry fruits were appropriately stored for a few days to simulate the time needed to go from field to market,” said Sebesta. “The

berries were evaluated for quality, flavor and ‘mouthfeel’.”

“Working with the field crew and having specific projects made it a richer experience,”said Sebesta.

“Initially my plan was to go directly into graduate school after finishing my undergraduate degree. This internship aided me in realizing that I would value working,” Sebesta explained.

“Being in the field and working with the plants ignited the desire to be more of a horticulturalist for a little bit,” said Sebesta in comparison to continuing as a researcher.

Sebesta is planning to graduate in December with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Food and Life Science with a major in Horticulture.

“I wish I had taken the opportunity to do multiple internships actually,” she reflects. “There are really so many different paths to pursue in horticulture.”

Sebesta claimed her two

month stay with DBB has been “an inspiration” down the path of life after a bachelor’s degree.q

I created this logo for myself and decided on the name as a play on

my last name using the word “bird” to represent “Crowe”. I have always loved to sew and hope someday to

be able to devote the majority of my time to creating beautiful things

with needle and thread.

I created a couple of variations on the logo as well as a full style sheet. These examples are excerpts of that

style sheet. A sewing bird is an antique sewing notion so along with the play on my name, I have included another passion, which is collecting antique

sewing items.
