As the stay at home continues due to the Pandemic, I hope you are coping with the difficulty of work life balance. With everything that is going on this is the perfect month for the very first Attorney Well-Being Week, May 4-8. I hope that you are or have taken advantage of all the great materials that are or have been provided. Now, more than ever, Attorneys need to focus on their well-being. The Attorney Well-Being Week is filled with information from Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers, the SJC Standing Committee on Attorney Well-Being and the Hampden County Bar Association. Take the time to check out the resources sent each day by email. From Ted Talks, articles, challenges and video chats, it is with hope that you will find something that you can connect with in your efforts to staying healthy and create your own new normal. As these times can be very difficult, please know that the Hampden County Bar Association is here for you. Our Bench Bar Committees and Section Chairs are doing a great job in keeping people informed and connected through video conferences. I strongly encourage you to take advantage of these interactions and stay as involved as possible. If you have not joined in the past, now is the perfect time to hop onto a zoom session and get to see and know others in your focus area. These meetings are providing some relief and assistance by connecting one another and discussing topic such as, how to get things done and what others in the same situations are experiencing. HCBA BOARD OFDIRECTORS ELECTIONSThe ballot for President-Elect and Board of Directors for theupcoming year will be sent to all members of the HampdenCounty Bar Association in May. Pursuant to the by-laws ofthe HCBA, a member interested in running for the Board ofDirectors can request that the ballot indicate his or herwillingness to serve. Any current Board member who hasserved on the Board for a minimum of three years, one ofwhich can be as a Section Chair, interested in running forPresident-elect can request that the ballot indicate his orher willingness to serve in that position. A qualifyingcandidate may run for both the President-Elect position andthe Board of Directors at the same time. Members who would like to be designated on the ballot ashaving an interest in serving on the Board of Directors,including any incumbent Board of Director wishing to serveanother term, must notify us by Thursday, May 21, 2020, inwriting or via email to [email protected]. The names ofmembers submitting their names and any other memberschosen by the Nominating Committee will appear on theelection ballot. The following are the Hampden County Bar AssociationBoard of Directors' expectations:• Promote the mission & goals of the Hampden County BarAssociation.• Regularly attend Board of Director meetings (1stWednesday of each month, September through June at4:00 pm)• Attend major functions: Judidical Dinenr, Law Day, GolfOuting and/or dinner & Annual Meeting.• Attend Evening Socials (held on a quarterly basis).• Actively participate in membership recruitment.• Assume a Leadership role in organizing a CLE or Experts InResidence or Chair a project. As a reminder, Past Presidents (for ten years followinghis/her retirement from office) will have the option to serveas an ex-officio member of the Board.

The Hampden County Legal Clinic is a pro bonoprogram of the Hampden County Bar Association,

which strives to continually improve access to justicefor the underserved in Hampden County through

volunteer efforts of legal professionals. The Legal Clinicprovides free essential legal and law-related services to

area residents in need through a variety of pro bonoinitiatives and community-based programs. There are

no income restrictions or other limitations onparticipation in our programs.

The Western Division HousingVirtual VLFD program provides legalrepresentation for landlords, or therare tenant who is ineligible for CLArepresentation, in emergencyhearings. Any volunteer who signsup for a day through the signup link,should also include their phonenumber and email address so thatthe Court can contact you on yourduty day (you can add your phonenumbers in the “comment” sectionof the signup window). TheMediators and/or clerks will thenhave your contact information andwill call you on your chosen dutyday, when there is a case to refer. NoCourt Appearances Necessary. The Hampden Superior Court is converting trialdates into ‘select a new trial date’. If someonehas a trial scheduled for May or June, they willhave a conference call on that date to select anew trial date. They will be contacted and giventhe number and time to call into theconference line. They do not need to send inmotions to continue or requests for a status, asit just creates additional work. The Hampden County Courthouse is CLOSEDto the public until June 1, 2020. Westfield CityHall is closed to the public as well until furthernotice. This means that the Hampden CountyRegistry of Deeds will neither be open to thepublic in Springfield or Westfield. However, theRegistry will continue to remotely recorddocuments through E-Recording channels.This includes Land Court documents. Plansmay be mailed to our Springfield location. Weare receiving mail and overnight packages untilfurther notice. These mailed and delivereddocuments are being processed upon receipt. Please be sure to check our website forupdates as matters evolve daily. Should yourequire assistance, please email us [email protected].
