Welcome to the first edition of the GyroScope on the Web. In an effort to reduce costs the decision to eliminate two of the paper editions of the GyroScope was made at the International Convention in San Diego. We hope you will enjoy the digital version as we move into the twentieth century. For those of you who do not have a computer, the electronic version can be downloaded and printed by a club member who has that capability.

The decision to eliminate the “Who’s Where” printed roster that was circulated every two years was also made in San Diego. To replace this, the current plan is to merge the data- base currently in operation in District IV into the International website. This will provide sufficient security to enable all Districts to become part of a Gyro-wide member database. The technical part of this process is over my head, but our immediate Past President Ab Nightingale is working diligently with the techies in District IV to bring this about in the near future. For more information on this, please refer to Ab’s “Web Corner” in this edition.

Since our inauguration in San Diego, Lynn and I have been very busy traveling around District IV to several club installations, the lower mainland “Founders Night” as well as other special club events. We also attended the District VIII Convention in Cranbrook this fall and had a very enjoyable time.

We are rapidly approaching the International Interim to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 17th to the 22nd, 2010. Anyone interested in attending should be registering with Gyro International Headquarters very soon. We will have to return any unsold rooms to the Hotel if not booked by December 2nd, 2009. There is no registration fee for this event and the rooms are $55 per night, single or double occupancy. The Tuscany Suites and Casino is a resort style facility with several three-story buildings, a large Casino, five restaurants and large suite-size rooms with a kitchenette, including a fridge, microwave oven, table and a good sized bathroom. The facility also has two swimming pools, a hot tub area and lots of palm trees. You might think you are in Hawaii!

First Vice President Harold Bernard is planning the training sessions for the Lt. Governors that proved so popular in New Orleans and will be held again in Las Vegas. See Harold’s article in this edition for more details. There will many other activities including hospitality to keep the fun going.

Thursday night we will wind up the Interim with a buffet dinner combined with a “Mad Hatter” party, so find a wild hat and try for the prize. For more information, including registration, go to the Gyro website at www.gyro.ws and click on “Annual Interim Meeting.”

Wheeling hosts D-I Gyros at the Island Wheeling Island Hotel/Casino was the venue for the 2009 District IConvention in mid-September. During the Friday night opening buffet party, the mayor of the West Virginia city welcomed the visitors by saying “One of our slogans is ‘Take some of Wheeling home with you’. Well, frankly, I also want you to leave some of yourselves here in Wheeling!” (He was referring to the activities in the huge casino and gaming center of course.) Excellent entertainment on Friday night was provided by Columbus Gyro Len Hibbard, who “wowed” the group with his magical tricks, “aided” by several “volunteers” from the audience. This was followed by visiting in the hospitality rooms, or a visit to the 24-hour casino. Saturday morning found the District I Gyros conducting their business (club reports, annual budget, report on the International Convention). International’s official representative was Second Vice President Jim Hyland. Also visiting was Past International President Ab Nightingale from Toronto. Then it was on to golfing at the Wheeling Country Club for some, touring and shopping for others, and (you guessed it) casino-going for still others. Saturday evening featured a formal Installation Dinner at WheelingCountry Club. Retiring Governor Larry Larson of Akron spoke of his love for Gyro and all the Gyros and Gyrettes he has met. Jim Hyland installed new officers: Governor Kevin Peterson of Northwest Indiana (acceptance poem in sidebar elsewhere), 1st Lt. Gov. Chris Snyder of Canton, 2nd Lt. Gov. Lew Lause of Marion and Sec.-Trea. Randy Tarrier of Powell. Golf winners announced were Gloria Rynd of Akron, Carl Carenbauer of Wheeling and Geoff Pearce of Youngstown. The Man-Mile Award went to Northwest Indiana, and Kevin Peterson was presented a two-billed cap by PDG Ed Benhoff, Cleveland Heights, with the inscription “I’m their leader, which way did they go?” Wheeling’s “Mr. Gyro,” 52-year member PDG Bill Crowl (who was the Convention Chairman) was recognized for his level of commitment to Gyro, both at the club and district levels. When I started thinking about how to address you tonight I got a little nervous, I got a little tight.

I cracked open a cold one, and said, “Let’s get this thing done.”

Because the heart of Gyro is friendship and fun!

I’m an Indiana boy, but Alumni of the Boilers (Purdue), Got luck to marry Julie, she loves me to spoil her@

We hung out with the Gyros of Indiana Northwest

I grew up with this club as a kid, knowing their times were the best.

Attending conventions in Marion, Youngstown, Indianapolis and now here.

Hospitality rooms full of laughter, friendship, fun & cold beer! I gotta thank my dad, my buddy, my pal, the old man For getting me involved with such a wild, rowdy clan.

Thanks to Benhoff, Hyland, Boyden and Barnaby, For if I screw this Governor thing up, you can blame

them not me! I can promise you this, as your Governor for the year

I can’t wait to visit your clubs, spreading fun Gyro cheer.

Be sure to come to our convention next year, Northwest Indiana isn’t too far!

We will give you the chance to party like a rock star! So as I close out this speech, with friends I love the most

Camosun Summer Activities

And now for something entirely new. Well notexactly, since July 1st, 2009 was Canada’s 142nd celebration of its founding but it was thefirst time that the Camosun Gyro Club hadparticipated in the festivities. Camosun’s newly installed president, NedPeterson and his Gyrette Laurie, organized andhosted the event at their waterfront home. It wasa most auspicious way to start Ned’s term inoffice.

Well over one hundred Camosun and Victoriaclub Gyros, Gyrettes and guests attended on anabsolutely gorgeous holiday afternoon. Theonly requirement was that everyone be attiredin red and white and pass the scrutiny of a zealous red-coated head greeter, PP Les Wood.Fortunately all attendees passed muster and were assigned to teams for participation in thegames. The outfits were as varied as the wearer’sbirth places. Red maple leaves were inabundance. Harry Hyde sported a glow-in-the-dark red and white wig even though it wasbroad daylight!

There was fun, food, frolic and games to keepeveryone occupied for as long as they cared. The host and hostess barbecued lots of red andwhite meat and the buffet tables groaned underthe weight of an endless quantity of salads,appetizers, yummy desserts and liquidrefreshments.

The games tested the skill and ability of all whowere there. There was putting, pool, croquet, ahome grown example of Trivial Pursuit and agolf pitching contest that thwarted the efforts ofall who tried to hit a ball into a bucket encase ina lifebuoy anchored some distance offshore. Lefthanded PP Jack Bowers did his best using a righthanded club upside down and backwards to noavail.

The enthusiasm that was shown for the first ever Camosun Canada Day bodes well for thefuture. Undoubtedly the club will opt that itbecomes an annual event.

In the July, August, September, 2009 Gyroscope the recommendation to each club was as follows: “Action Plan” -- If each club makes a commitment to maintain its present number of members and to add at least 2 members during the Gyro year from May 1, 2009 to April 30, 2010, the decline in membership can be controlled.” To date 43 New Members have joined 23 Clubs in the months of May, June, July, August and September. This is an increase of 13 over the equivalent period last year. In order to reach our recommended commitment for this year it will require 159 New Members to join in the months from October to April, 2010. There are 79 Clubs which have yet to install a New Member this year; let’s go Gyro! “Only you can introduce Your Friend to Gyro”

Bellingham’s 29th Installation On October 10, 2009 the Bellingham Gyro Club celebrated its 29th installation of officers at the Homestead FarmGolf Club. Visitors from 14 clubs were on hand to congratulate new president Wes Gannaway, and wife Deb, as hestarts his two-year term in office. Notable among the visitors were International President Ken Klinck & wife Lynn. Following a lively welcome party at the home of Jack & Barb Griffin, out-of-towners were treated to a special visiton Saturday afternoon to member Tom Graham’s astonishing Coors Palace. As noted by Lynn Klinck, who took thepictures – “As you can see, we visited the “Coors Ranch” which is a truly amazing collection of Coors & Halloweenmemorabilia.” Tom is a retired merchandising executive who turned a bit of retirement memorabilia into a dedicatedsalute to Coors beer. On August, 13, 2009, Lowell Gist gave platelets for the 300th time at the Fresno Blood Center in California. Lowell began giving blood about 27 years ago. He found out that there is a great demand for platelets, since they are beneficial to cancer, leukemia and burn victims. He said, “I give blood to help save lives.” Apheresis is a Greek word for separate. The process of Apheresis is to remove whole blood and filter out the platelets from the red blood cells. The red blood cells are then reintroduced back into the donor. One of the wonderful things about giving platelets is that you can be a donor 24 times per year. When you give whole blood, you can only donate about six times each year, since it takes a long time to regenerate the red blood cells. Lowell began giving platelets about 17 years ago, since fewer people take the extra hour it takes for the process. He is a great example for others to follow. Gyros Come Up Big for CT Scanner

As the Executive Council Representative for District VIII, I would like to commend the members of the Nelson Club for their generous contribution of $5,000 towards the purchase of a Diagnostic CT Scanner for the local Nelson Hospital. On September 21st, I attended the Nelson Club’s meeting, and Brian May was the guest speaker. He is a volunteer who is coordinating the fund raising drive to purchase the 1.5 million dollar unit. The nearest unit is located in Trail at the Boundary Regional Hospital.. Last year there were 2300 visits by people using the scanner. There has been an increase in demand of 48% in the past 5 years. The scanner provides a quick way to analyze patients for an aneurism or blood clot. It is used for neurology, cardiovascular, pediatrics, orthopedics, and internal medicine diagnostics. Brian said, “If you have the equipment, they (the specialists) will come.” Staff from the Nelson paper attended the Nelson Club’s business meeting on October 5th, and they included an article about the donation. It is expected that this generous contribution will aid in the eventual purchase of the scanner in 12-18 months. Having a scanner in town will reduce the waiting time from about three months to 1.5 months. The members of the community will all benefit from this effort.

International 3rd VP Larry Duba installed John MacDonaldof the Long Beach Gyro Club as the new 1st Lt. Governor ofDistrict IX while attending the Long Beach stag dinner heldat Tom & Judy Everson’s beautiful beach-side home. He also had the privilege of installing Tom Wilson as the club’s newest member – also giving Tom’s sponsor, Lance Shafer an appropriate charge to help mentor and encourage him toparticipate in the club’s activities. 2nd Lt. Governor Lowell Gist also was in attendance which gave him an opportunity to know John better, as well as meet many of the Long Beach members. We both were welcomed and treated to great social activity, staying overnight with Tim and Jennifer Cameron who extended fantastic hospitality. Tim is the current president and has done a great job handling sensitive club business. The club is in great shape and many of the members plan on attending future conventions.

Our Annual Pot Luck Supper is held every year on the last Monday of October. There does not seem to be many witches about town at this time, but perhaps there are a few goblins to help keep the vampires and werewolves away until we have eaten of the multitude of delicious foods made from the favorite recipes of our Gyrettes. Betty and I went out hunting for the demons and in Kentwille we found dozens, perhaps more than a hundred pumpkin headed people all over the place, some were playing golf, some curling and many on the lawns and porches of residents, and lots downtown. Then we drove over to Mahone Bay and it was crowded with scarecrows, and many were dressed as popular entertainers – probably they were the ghosts of people past in their hometowns for the annual celebration of All Hallow Eve. I did notice that some had their Haunting Licenses. On the 26th of October nearly a hundred Gyrettes, Gyros, and their guests – the three “G’s” and the life blood of all clubs – gathered at the St. John’s Church Hall at 6PM. There was much chatter during the cocktail hour about the summer just past, and of course, all the happenings around town. The kitchen crew, with organizing co-chairs – Gyrettes Lynn Sheridan and Pat Lord were busy gathering the large variety of scrumptious entrees and palate-tickling desserts. The dinner was laid out buffet style with spareribs, fish casserole, sausages, beans, salads, meatballs, etc., and then lemon pie, raspberry/ blackberry trifle, Amaretto cheesecake, and more. Just one look was enough to get the appetite going and the mouth watering. After dinner we were entertained by Estelle Peabody who told us many stories from experiences during her life. There was much laughter and loud applause. The hall and the tables were delightfully decorated with lots of reminders that this was Halloween. Colorful Autumn leaves were sprinkled about the tables. We all enjoyed the evening immensely thanks to all the work of the Gyrettes.

Wadsworth Gyro – Niagara Weekend

Since the 1970’s when Joe Sterling won a $1000 Tontine at a Wheeling Convention, the Wadsworth Gyro club has taken a ”long weekend” each year in September. Joe’s win paid for a long weekend for the members and wives. This year’s event was held at Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake, Canada. About 20 Gyros andGyrettes attended the event, chaired by Larry Fligor, Dan Sondles and Steve Jordan.

Cranbrook Hosts D-VIII Convention

The Cranbrook Gyros and Gyrettes hosted over 164

delegates to their "Walking in the Rockies" convention,

September 17-20. The theme highlighted the "Super

Natural" beauty that abounds around Cranbrook, the Key

City of the East Kootenay Region of British Columbia.

All Gyros and Gyrettes were able to enjoy a variety of

activities over the weekend. After an outstanding kickoff

evening that highlighted a prime rib dinner, conventioneers

choose between 3 activities on the following day. Those

that wanted to hike were guided on a terrific tour of our

famous Mt. Lakit by our super fit Gyro, Hugo Hess.

Golfing, arranged by Don Cockwell and Doug Bannink,

enjoyed stunning scenery and challenging course design at

the Bootleg Gap golf course. Conventioners that wanted to

see history enjoyed a fantastic tour including underground

mining demonstrations of the Sullivan Mine in Kimberley,

B.C. This mine was one of the largest producing mines of

lead and zinc in the world for over 100 years.

The afternoon was full of fun and energy at our famous

Colombo Lodge, where everyone competed for Bocce

bragging rights. The evening convened with the Colombo

Lodge's world renowned Italian meal. No one went home

hungry or thirsty!

On Saturday morning, Gyros met for the convention's

business meeting, chaired by outgoing Governor Joe

Vingo. It was noted that this meeting was one of the

most productive and consequential meetings in many

years! At the same time, the Gyrettes were enjoying a

champagne brunch and a fashion show. The Cranbrook

ladies, organized by Odette Rouse, hosted and modelled

fashions from the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift shop. Over

$1,000 was raised for this worthwhile local charity!

The convention ended with a fantastic banquet and

awards ceremony. We all appreciate the hard work that

the organizing club gave under the outstanding

leadership of Jim Jackson, Glen McIver, Renato Nicli,

Harvey Venier, Don Boyle, Hugo Hess, Marion Hess and

Odette Rouse. We also appreciate the sacrifice of time

and talent of Ron Janisch, Don Cockwell, Jack Wigen,

John Scott, Mike Rouse and George Pelton, Casey

Hanemayer, Warren Moore, Jim Kennelly, Odd Aasland,

Joe Pagarut, Brian Clifford, Jon Mahovlic, Imre Rokus

and Al Dyck. We also need to recognize the entire Gyro

family from across District VIII and beyond that made

the effort to make our convention the success it was.

District II Date Switch does the Trick

Finding a September convention weekend in District IIwith no competing Big Ten or Big 12 football game is areal challenge. So the host Des Moines Gyros took anunprecedented step. They picked the last weekend inAugust, a week prior to the season openers for the 2009event, a “Gyro Football Homecoming Weekend.” It was a good move – seven of eight clubs wererepresented and more than 80 meals were served at theSaturday dinner-dance. Gyros and Gyrettes in colorful attire of favorite teamsopened the weekend at a lively Friday night, pre-season“tailgate party.” The business meeting conducted by Governor DennisCarlson, Clinton, and a noon luncheon preceded twospecial programs on Saturday afternoon – “The Orphan

Train” and the “For Des Moines Historical Museum.” Saturday evening the Governor’s reigns were turned over to Neil Baker, Davenport, before Neil & Wanita were “crowned” Homecoming King and Queen. Immediate Past International President Ab Nightingale came from Toronto, along with wife Win to induct the officers, including Dan Hale, of the host club as 1st Lt. Governor, and Dave Langfitt, Clinton, as Secretary-Treasurer. On September 10th, Larry Duba was congratulated by President George Buck for being installed as 3rd International President and for receiving the Gyro of the Year Award at the International Convention held in San Diego. Larry was presented with a couple of gifts consisting of a patriotic picture with a picture of him dressed as George Washington and with a Gyroscope. George Buck was presented an award Lowell Gist was given at the International Convention for the Fresno Club’s increase in membership. The growth of the Fresno Gyro Club in District IX continues, due to members taking action to “Share the fun with a Friend.” Larry installed Rick Staggs as a new member. His wife Inez was invited to be with him and she attached the Gyro Pin to his shirt. His sponsor was Lowell Gist, Fresno Club VP, along with his wife Sharon. Lowell Gist then installed two new members as follows: 1. Robert (wife Gina) Estrada who was sponsored by Derrell (wife Barbara) Biddy; and 2. Bruce (wife Bobbi) McKee who was sponsored by Sal (wife Silvia) Aiello. Larry had provided some of the early history of Gyro, and he and Lowell had administered the charge to the sponsors to properly mentor the new members. George Buck welcomed the new members and thanked those who sponsored our new members. It was a fun and successful evening. Rick volunteered to become the club’s webmaster, so we can look forward to an improved method of disseminating information to members and prospective members.

Port Colborne Gyro Club

Since our last report a great deal has gone on. We lost several key, influential Gyros and we have introduced new people to Gyro. We continue to meet socially during the summer -- with and without our Gyrettes. This years Port/District Golf tournament in July was blessed with beautiful weather, good friends and good golf as displayed by slammin’ Tommy Christoff , winner of the Tuck Trophy. He also led his team of John Tuck, Joe Parry and Bill Maw to victory and were the recipients of the District III - Bill Sherk Memorial Trophy. Our social events with our Gyrettes were held at the Salanki “Ponderoza.” On one occasion we gathered for barbecued steaks and for the other we enjoyed a corn roast with many trimmings. We are now awaiting our yearly Founders’ Night Gala at which we will introduce new people to Gyro in hope of increasing membership. The event proved very successful last year and chairman John Tuck is hoping that it will prove the same this year. We were also very fortunate to be able to attend the District III convention in Buffalo. What a great convention and our hats are off to the Buffalo Gyro Club for a very well organized and fun-filled weekend . This event had the best Moose Milk I have ever had. Until we meet again , somewhere in Gyro Land, we wish you the very best in the upcoming year.

Testosterone Triumphs at Picnic

It took a long and hard fought struggle, but finally after many years, Past International President Denis Moffat wrested the coveted Camosun Bocce Trophy from the clutches of the Camosun Gyrettes at the club’sannual summer picnic and bocce tournament in August. Club Officer Leadership Development

The Leadership Development Sessions that District Officers are required to attend at the InternationalInterim Meetings are designed to not only increase theparticipants’ knowledge of Gyro organizationalfunctions, but also to provide opportunities to acquire skills in the delivery of educational programme at the club level.

At present there are knowledgeable and experienced individuals in all clubs who could be utilized in the guidance and development of future leaders. By providing opportunities for our members to gain greater knowledge of Gyro policies and procedures, members will be better prepared and more willing to accept leadership responsibilities.

The health and longevity of our organization is directly dependent on the successful operation of the individual club. When club leadership provides sound management of the club’s affairs, members are more dedicated in supporting the club and ensuring its survival.

Consider conducting a leadership development session at a club meeting for the members of your club, or operate a session when a number of clubs are attending a joint function (Convention or Interim Meeting.)

Toronto CelebRates its 90th Anniversary

The Gyro Club of Toronto was chartered on April 14, 1919. This was cause for a special celebration this year which we did in style at our August 19th meeting that was held in our favorite upscale dining spot – McLean House at the Vaughn Estates. We were please to have some special Gyros join us for this celebration including PIP Tom Lennox, Gov. Jim Jenkins, and 1st. Lt. Governor Glenn Pollinger. The meeting started with a musical interlude by world famous pianist David Warrack (son of our own Bill Warrack). Guests were then ushered in by a piper followed by appropriate toasts and welcome by outgoing President Tom Rassos. Following dinner, we started our special ceremony with Mike Read presenting a shortened version of his now famous Founders Night speech. IPIP and Club Secretary-Treasurer Ab Nightingale followed by reviewing the history of the Toronto club. We were then entertained by four of our longest term

members who spoke to us about their memories of Gyro – great presentations and memories by Bill Tynkaluk (48 yrs.), Barry Black (41 yrs.), John Young (48 yrs.) and Bill Pate (51 yrs.). This was followed by Club Directors cutting and distributing our special anniversary cake (see photo) We then moved on to the present with Governor Jim Jenkins installing our new Directors followed by the installation of two new members – Ray Goodier & John McCullough. Both new members were sponsored by Bob Baines. The photos show how happy he was to see these fellows installed. We closed with special presentations to PDG Mike Read (International Award of Merit); outgoing President Tom Rassos (Certificate of Appreciation as club President); Membership Chairman Bob Baines (special club Certificate of Appreciation for his work over the years); and incoming President Roman Niemy (International Best Website Award).

Wadsworth Summerstory by Pat Brannigan

Carrying on in our tradition for summer type festivities, the Wadsworth Gyro Club gather most of its members and wives for a Sunday brunch on June 30th at the Brannigan home. We opened again with Mimosas and Bloody Marys to delight the partakers, and followed with traditional breakfast fare, a terrific array of waffles cooked to order, sausage, egg stratas, rich rolls and breads. The cocktails on the patio led to meal seating in the home for comfort. A slight mist of rain challenged some Gyros and Gyrettes to seek cover early ... however most stayed challenging the misty outdoors. The committee was Walt & Betty Gairing, Chuck & Jan Johnston and Paul & Joan Brannigan. After 2-3 hours of Gyro friendship and frivolity, the members headed for home. Additionally, the Brannigan’s daughter Peggy, and her son Brian Smith attended from their home in Holland, and brought news of her husband, Astronaut Steven Smith, who was in Houston on NASA business.

a sip or two of his beverage.

Kelowna Honors three 50-year Members

Testimony of Hugh Fitzpatrick

I grew up in a Gyro household as my father was a Gyro in the Kelowna Club. I was, therefore, thrilled when I was invited to become a Gyro and share in the friendship that my dad had enjoyed for many years, and was still enjoying. I remember that we would always plan our out of town trips so that they would not conflict with a Gyro meeting. I was President in 69-70, I wrote our Appleer newsletter for several years. Gyro friendship was extended to me immediately upon my joining and I soon learned the true meaning of the old verse, “Friendship ain't just shaking hands and saying “Howdy do” Friendship grasps a fella's heart and warms him through and through.” I'm delighted to have had fifty years of membership to enjoy that friendship.

Al Anderson (50 years)

Al recalls going to a Gyro kiddy's party at the Aquatic centre with his 2 daughters and wife Nina. Ron Ellis, who joined with Al in 1959, tells Al this event is for kids only and why did he bring his Gyrette Nina. Al responds, Nina is 8 ½ months pregnant and you said bring all your kids.

I joined Gyro in 1959 at the tender age of 21. The Kelowna Gyro club had many father/son combinations at that time. Kelowna was small and I, like many sons, joined their fathers in business so it seemed to be natural to join Gyro as well. My Grandfather was also a member of the Kelowna club

rdso I became the first 3 generation member in Gyro International. I was proud to bring my son Geoff into

ththe club in 1996, making him the first 4 generation Gyro.

Gyro was a large part of our social lives in the early days as most of our friends were in Gyro. I was president in 1978. A lot of effort was put into community events and the club was very prominent in the city. Two of the most notable community projects were the development of Boyce Gyro Park and the initiative to build the Kelowna & District Memorial Arena as a tribute to our war efforts. I still enjoy the fellowship of Gyro and appreciate the many friends we have made over the years.

PS There is a tradition in Kelowna to serve as president only once.

Prince Georgecontinues to have fun!

What can I say, Gyro is all about friends and fun! We took the summer off, but before we did, we held our annual mixed golf tournament, followed by the guys only fishing weekend to Uncha Lake – slow fishing but great stories and food to help us relax! We met again in September and exchanged our summer stories at a good old-fashioned Barn Dance -- John Simpkins’ brother provided the Barn -- John slow-cooked the ribs on the BBQ and everyone kicked up their heels and danced the night away. It was so much fun, we are planning on it becoming an annual event! Then it was almost serious time as we held our annual installation with a wine & cheese get together on Friday ... the big banquet and dance on Saturday with a follow up traditional “Moosemilk” breakfast to send our visiting friends away in style. What’s in store now? MORE FUN! The Christmas Party is next. Yes indeed, we have lots of fun in Prince George!
