The President’s Message

Dale Woodroffe, President Gyro International

Fellow Gyros, Gyrettes, Ladies, partners and Friends of gyro.

Winter is behind us and spring is finally arrived for many Gyros. The Snowbirds are returning from their southern nests, cruises, and travel in warmer climates.

This winter your District Governors and International Executive have been working on committees, monthly conference calls and keeping in touch through emails.

The committee on responsibilities and succession planning has submitted its report to the Board of Governors for review. From this report the BOG recognized Emil Baijot for all the hard work and effort he has done in the position of Secretary - Treasurer, and because of the diversity of abilities now required, to split out the Editor’s position as being responsible for the GyroScope and the website. This would give more time for the individual to focus on the responsibilities and duties of the position he holds.

In this addition to the Editor position you will find that we now have three positions which need to be filled: Secretary - Treasurer, Editor, and Director of Membership. All three positions are extremely important to the running of Gyro and so we are looking for Gyros who are interested in taking on the duties and responsibilities for the next few years. If you are interested or know someone who would do a good job, please contact your District Governor or Emil, or myself, before May 1, 2018. The notice and description of duties may be found in this issue.

Don't forget the best convention of the year: The Gyro International AGM Convention, this year in beautiful Lake Geneva just outside Chicago. District II Gyros under Governor Neil baker have been working diligently to create an atmosphere of Fun and Friendship around the business meetings. If you have not booked/ registered yet, I strongly suggest you do so as this area is very popular to tourists and other conventions, and rooms are booking up fast.

All monthly BOG conference call minutes have been posted on the website for all gyros’ information.

The “Year of Invitation “is gaining traction as I heard that we have had 130 new members this past year. Let's keep the ball rolling and invite your friends, acquaintances, and nice people we meet, who we think would make good Gyros, to share our Gyro fellowship by bringing them to one, two or three events.

Wishing everyone “Fun, Joy and Friendship' this spring and see you in June in Lake Geneva.

Put in Bay is sometimes called the “Party Capital” of Ohio's North Coast, maybe due to the college-age enthusiasts who flock there on summer weekends. However, seventy-eight Gyros gave the youngsters a run for their money the week-end of September 8-10.

The weather was a little cold for early September, but that only fortified us as we enjoyed a Friday dinner overlooking the lake, and then repaired to various evening locations, including our indoor/outdoor hospitality suite.

Saturday's business meetings were unique in the fact that we changed locations (from our open-air rooftop setting) due to interference from high school marching bands practicing for their part in Put in Bay's Historical Weekend ffstivities. No worries, business was completed, and we enjoyed various daytime activities including winery tours, or island tours on a golf cart, or just lunch harborside.

Attendance was very well distributed, it actually seemed like we were at an International Interim, with guests from District 2 (Gov. Neil & Lolita Baker), and District 3 (IPIP Dana Davidson & Barb Dukic) joining the festivities along with Gyros from Akron, Canton, Marion, Northwest Indiana, Painesville, Powell, & Western Reserve.

The evening's festivities were at the hotel's poolside, next to a perpetually running waterfall. The hotel did a wonderful job providing emergency audio system, firepits for light (some would say heat), and a delectable buffet menu.

The reins to District One's well-being were passed from Randy Tarrier (Powell) to Bryan Flanigan (Painesville), in a fire-lit ceremony next to the roaring waterfall, surrounded by many happy Gyros. District One wishes the best to our new leader-ship, and many happy returns to all of those people who made this convention a success by being there.

From the desk of the Editor ...

Letters to the Editor & Trivia of Interest

Wow ... a lot is happening as I start to wrap up almost 20 years as your International Secretary-Treasurer.

The Committee on Succession, composed of three PDGs and the EC, has determined that the EC should search the Gyro membership for my replacement. The Executive Council had already acknowledged by a 2015 Resolution that the diversity now inherent the job required a separation of duties into a solely S/T position covering the duties normally associated with the term, and a second position of Editor with the duties of producing the GyroScope magazine, maintaining and updating the International website, and whatever other technical needs arise. Additionally, the relatively new position of Membership Chairman will become vacant as of the convention. PIP Larry Duba, the first and current chairman, who was tasked with developing the parameters and scope of the job has determined that after two years, someone else might bring fresh ideas, talent and drive to this position dedicated to improving our membership numbers. It is hoped that the positions can be filled with volunteers, but failing that, the EC is ready to negotiate modest honorariums as necessary.

If interested, you will find the search statement on page 8 followed by the job descriptions.

Immediately following this page you will find two pages written by Matt Williams, a member of the Nanaimo club. Matt is the District IV webmaster, and is enjoying an exceptional career in today’s technology sector.

Both pages are excerpts taken from an email string - a discussion between several D-4 members. Initially, the string started with valid concerns on ways that entering “Gyro” or “men’s social group” into a search browser could elicit stronger responses and thus perhaps find new members.

Gyro leadership in recent years is often charged with the premise that in order to save Gyro we must make changes. Mostly these changes are not defined - only that we must change to survive. Many changes to modernize have been initiated, but the most important - how to increase our membership - remain elusive. The leadership has generally rejected ideas such as advertising as not in keeping with our precepts - thus still advocating “bring a friend to Gyro” as our best mantra.

Matt’s frame of reference is of course his own club that historically has provided numerous city parks in the local area, and is a highly successful club in that it’s membership remains constant at somewhere between the mid-70 to mid-90 range of membership. In my personal estimation, his comments on the next page “hit the nail on the head” as to what works. We all know this, we only have to make the effort.

As for his comments on the second page following, please note the editors comments.

Hi all,

Great points by everyone. Personally I see the websites as a necessary 2nd engagement, aer someone has heard of Gyro the website serve to provide informaon and validate our organizaon which hopefully sparks an interest . I see the membership issue as follows

1. Visibility. I agree this is the first step, however I would cauon relying on the websites as first contact. Opmizing a search for a specific term " Gyro Club of Fraser Delta" is cheap and easy, however general terms "Making Friends in Fraser Delta" it is expensive both in me and investment as well as financial due to compeon. Furthermore it's very difficult to predict what people search for.

2. Conversion. Aer someone has heard of us through our parks, a member, or the website you actually need to get them to a meeng. Even if we spent hundred plus hours cracking the code to the perfect search terms, the harder problem is geng them to take acon. People see posters, are approached with religious pamphlets, and websites every day but geng them to take acon is extremely difficult.

3. Retenon. If someone were to hear about us and meet up not knowing anyone, what would cause them to stay? What are the alternaves? Each of us has strong es to Gyro with many friends, but a new 30-60-year-old coming into an aging club is a hard sell, especially if they don't know anyone to begin with. While it can be argued that each of us came in only knowing one person, an important queson is do clubs currently have the same draw to new members as when we joined?

4. Fit. I would argue that most of us love Gyro not because of the number of people, but the quality of the connecons/friendships. The club was founded to bring together men of character, however we oen talk about geng anyone in the door who is willing to pay their dues. While this makes steps towards saving Gyro financially, it doesn't necessarily maintain the character and quality that we love. Do we want to save the Gyro name, or do we want to save what Gyro is?

The Nanaimo club is a relavely healthy club. We have quite a bit of visibility with our parks, menons the newspaper. We get 4-5 people visitng per year, convert 2 to 3 new members as Probies each year, and maybe retain 75% of them over 3 years. the ones that remain are a good fit . On paper this is about as good as it gets. This said, we are shrinking faster than we are adding members due to aging. Cost is becoming a big factor both for exisng members as well as new members. I suspect we will connue to shrink, not for lack of effort. Don, I wish I had the answers for you. Saul, Peter E, and I have each spent 100+ hours on this problem. Emil and Peter P probably 1,000+ realiscally. Gyro is near and dear to each of our hearts. And none of us are giving up. But I can say quite confidently efforts to increase visibility online and passively wait for people to contact us is not going to solve the problem and is me/effort that could more effecvely be used elsewhere.

Given your clubs current profile, one potenal tacc would be to get involved with something that give presence within a mall (fundraiser, etc). If people are manning a booth you can have an interacve conversaon about the club, and get some real tracon. I know in Nanaimo at least, newly rered people tend to walk the malls or go to the library once they no longer have an office to go to. Geng these 60-65-year-olds into your club would lower the average age and make your club accessible to 50 to 60-year-olds. And you can then work downwards.

I hope this helps, all the best.

I think we all agree any approach would be multifaceted, and require collaboration.

SEO, page rank optimization, and other buzzwords lead people to spending a ton of money trying to outsmart Google. Do not try to outsmart Google, they beat world Chess and Go Champions for fun, it's not a battle one can win. What you need to know/understand to make the biggest impact is that search is fundamentally based on 2 things:

1. How popular the page (or blog post) is. 2. How relevant the page (or blog post) is.

Popularity (PageRank) increases with the number of unique visits/total number of visits and the ranking of people that link to your site.

Relevance increases when you have well-written content that matches the search terms.

As was mentioned, blog posts are the most common way to increase relevance. The reason being a site will only have so many static pages (pages that don't change), but blog post can be written as often as you like.

The first thing you need to do to increase search results is determine which terms you think people who actually will convert to Gyro members will search for. For Gyro terms such as "friendship, brotherhood, fraternity, social, etc" are key. Google is extremely intelligent when it comes to search so it knows the difference between java the coffee, and Java the programming language based on the context of the article. It also gives you negative points if you repeat common words more often than would appear in an actual document. For example if you start every sentence with friendship you will actually get negative results when people search for friendship. What needs to happen is to write genuinely good, relevant posts. A blog post might be "Why now is the best time to meet friends in Fraser Delta", "Finding Brotherhood in a large city". The title of the post increases the relevance, so you want to make sure one of your keywords are in it. Google also gives preference to newer items so it's important for new articles post regularly.

If you write genuinely good posts that are relevant to what the people you want are searching for, people will actually read it. If someone comes across your post and leaves after a few seconds (bounces), this is a sign to Google the search result didn't give the person what they want (not relevant), so you get a slight penalty. If the post is insightful and captivating, the person will probably share it with their friends so you get a boost in relevance (they stayed) as well as popularity (more visitors). Once they are on your site hopefully they view other blog posts amplifying this effect.

If you write a good post, and say share with the local newspaper links to it online, it's popularity rank will go up as a function of their popularity rank. The more popular sites you have linking to your article, more popular and relevant it will be marked as, so focusing on inbound traffic outside search engines is what increases your relevance to search engines.

To increase online visibility for the entire organization, the best tactic would be each club to so this and the blog post themself could link the international organization, greatly increasing its popularity through the referral links. This is obviously a big ask of clubs.

As mentioned previously, online visibility is only one aspect of overall visibility. This said, using a tactic such as sharing articles with local newspapers would also increase overall visibility if included in their printed papers. Further sharing well-written articles about friendship may be easier for members to do than trying to recruit people.

I do agree however that we need a multifaceted approach, and in lieu of people bringing in new members directly (currently not happening), writing and sharing good articles is another tactic that could lead to new members.

Search Engine Optimization

Editor’s note: As noted on the previous page, the discussion continued regarding how to make “Gyro” “show” more frequently when someone is randomly searching online for our website or for a men’s social club. When Gyro International or gyro.ws is used, we rank always in the top four or five listings. When just Gyro (only) is used, we face considerable competition from similar names. In theory, using special identifying “buzz words” located in the initial text help the search engines (browsers) to make a connection. Another well advertised option is to pay someone to magically improve ones ranking via SEO. As Matt points out below, that can be a costly mistake. Although not of interest to most, I added this explanation by a technology professional to not only extend your knowledge, but to set aside any mis-information.

MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR’S DUTIES

The Membership Director is dedicated to the growth of Gyro International. The important thing is to make sure that clubs run efficiently so that the officers will be able to perform their administrative duties in a manner that will allow them to partake in the Gyro fun. The many duties of the Membership Director are as follows:

1. Chair a Membership Committee (MC) made up of representatives from every district. Find volunteers should a committee person quit.

2. Help develop tools that club officers can use in performing their administrative duties efficiently.

3. Write articles for the GyroScope that will motivate members to Invite a Friend to Gyro.

4. Write articles that are sent directly to all members (using the database) to communicate the need for each individual to think about acquaintances and friends whom they can invite to Gyro.

5. Attend the Gyro International Conventions and give a report on what the Membership Committee has done for its members and the current status of membership.

6. Contact successful clubs to determine the reason they are successful, and then communicate to the membership.

7. Remind members about the tools that are available to them. 8. Work with the Betterment Fund Committee to determine where limited

resources can help in increasing awareness to the public about the organization.

9. Communicate with club officers about the value of having a Membership Chairman for their club.

10. Encourage clubs to combine a membership drive with the Founders Night event, since it is a great opportunity to educate prospects and members about our organization.

11. Help district officers as appropriate with resolving problems a club might be experiencing.

12. Submit an expense report only for supplies and postage to the Betterment Fund on a semiannual or annual basis.

13. Survey Membership Committee Members as to what next project we should be developing to help the clubs.

14. Coordinate with the Executive Council’s 1st Vice President on membership issues, since he is responsible for Internal and External Expansion of Gyro International.

15. Coordinate with the staff at the Headquarters in Painesville, Ohio.

Both have slogans ...

Smokey says, “Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires.”

The Gyro says, “Only You Can Invite A Friend To Gyro.”

We all were invited by a friend to attend a club function.

We decided to join, because of the friendship and social

activities that we experienced and enjoyed at those

functions.

Gyro is one of societies greatest secrets, since we don't

advertise. I wish I could convince Smokey to “light a fire”

within you to motivate you to reach out to others and give

them an opportunity to share the Gyro fun in our Fraternity

of Friendship.

What Does Smokey the Bear & Gyro Members Have In Common?

Thanks to those who have invited friends to join! - your friend, PIP Larry Duba, Membership Director

- 12 -

There is always a build up to the Olympics as the torch is carried through several countries to the host country for the opening of the international event.

Gyro International also needs members to keep the flames of friendship alive and carried throughout the world. There aren't any limitations as to how many friends one might have, if the flames of friendship are carried by its members to those with whom we come in contact.

One of the main reasons Gyro clubs begin to fail is that some of the club members of the club want to enjoy the benefits without volunteering to serve as an officer or even on committees. We need members to carry the torch of friendship by volunteering to serve as Club and District Officers. The dangers of not mentoring members and not sharing the officer role, is that some members are volunteering repeatedly, and they are getting worn out.

Members are more likely to volunteer, if they know exactly what the office or committee duties involve. Gyros need to be proactive in preparing officers well in advance with the job description and encouragement.

One of the benefits of serving as an officer is getting to know members in the club/district, and this fosters meaningful friendships. Attending conventions provides opportunities to make friendships with those in Canada, the United States and perhaps Tokyo. One reason a person might decide to volunteer to serve as an officer is so they can make a positive influence in changes that will make the organization better.

Please help us keep the flame of friendship alive for current members and for those yet to be invited to Gyro.

In 2006, the Stampede City Club hosted a Gyro International Convention and again Ian was the spark plug in initiating the event. He and Paul Stout were co-chairmen. Our club members were rewarded by the many accolades received from the attendees who came from far and wide to the convention.

Besides receiving the Honor Key Award, Ian has also received other most significant awards usually initiated at the

A highlight of the evening was the recognition of Ian Greig's 50 years of Gyro service by President Jim Barrette. Jim

presented Ian with his commemorative plaque and pin.

All of you know Ian to be a long standing, dedicated Gyro

but I would like to give you a few more details about Ian's

Gyro history. Knowing of Ian's modesty about “blowing his

own horn” I requested the opportunity to write this article to

be included in his bulletin. Ian's official induction into Gyro

was in Feb. 1968. While there is no picture of this event in

our photo ar- chives I did come across a 1969 Installation

article published in the Gyroscope which included the text

of Ian's “Toast to the Ladies”. He quickly became known as

a“mover & shaker” in the club and was elected President in nd1973 (also elected for a 2

term in 2001). Ten years later, Ian served as District VIII Governor (1982-83) and his

sidekick Ted Gaffney served as Sec/Treas. I was fairly new to Gyro at the time and was

impressed by the stories these two cam

International events. Clearly Ian was becoming well known both as a dedicated and a fun

loving Gyro beyond the boundaries of our own club.

With his background in accounting, Ian next volunteered his time to manage the financial

reporting for Gyro International. For this he was awarded the International Honor Key Award.

This award, approved by the Board of Governors, is to recognize a Gyro who has rendered

special and/or exceptional service of “International Scope” to Gyro. His next Gyro adventure

(and for Joan too) was his term on

and as President in 1997-98. During his

term, he and Joan dedicated a great deal

of their time to the job and to travel

District IX Spring Fling

~ Come Rain or Shine ! ~

- 19 -

- submitted by Larry Duba, Fresno

PDG Ed Henderson organized the Spring Fling for District IX in Pasadena during March 21-23rd. Ed is a member of the Blacklake Gyro Club, and he organized a trip to attend the Santa Anita Horse Race for the 10th year.

It was decided to add a day to the trip for many so that the members of several clubs could enjoy more social time together for some great Gyro fun and use the event as our Spring Fling. Well, Spring started on March 20th, but a well-needed storm started on March 21st. Several members cancelled attending, due to the incliment weather. It rained so much that about 10:30 AM on race day Ed received a call that the races had been cancelled. Since members had paid for parking, the entrance fee and a lunch, it was decided to continue to the racetrack and enjoy the lunch together. Race 1 was supposed to be the Gyro Race. Due to the cancellation of the race, members were not given the opportunity to bet on the horse named "Blame the Weather" or "Knowitallhousewife" in the 2nd race.

Para mutual betting on races at other tracks was available; some betters won and some lost a few dollars. At the Golden Gate Fields race track "Stormy Mist" was scratched. We think the rain "mist" Oregon and hit California.

Governor Roger Lindley attended, and he provided a Hospitality Room with the beverages followed by some great dinners out that added to the fun and friendship that the event was all about.

Roger is shown in front of the wet track, and Ed is shown holding out his hand in front of some garbage cans catching water as it rain off the roof. We had three tables of members of the Blacklake and Fresno Gyro Clubs.

We enjoyed each other's company, and fortunately, the trip home was safe during a sunny day.

The last time the Katmai volcano erupeted was in 1912 ...

- submitted by Larry Duba, Membership Director

At the same time three friends – Paul Schwan, Clarence (Gus) Handerson, and Edmund th(Ed) Kagy with some other friends met in April and later on June 24 for the first official

meeting of our Fraternity of Friendship.

Just as the ash from the Katmai volcano eruption started to spread in the atmosphere over much of North America, so has the Gyro International organization spread through individual contacts, formation of friendships and the establishment of clubs in Canada and the United States as well as more recently Japan.

Prior to an eruption, there are many small earthquakes and rumblings. We might think of the additions of club members as earth shaking events at a time when so many organizations are declining in membership. We need to thank the many who have sponsored a new member. As a result of inviting others to share in our Gyro fun, many clubs have been able to offset their losses to provide stability. Other clubs have been able to hold fun activities that have attracted new members.

Those clubs that have seen an increase in membership over the last year include the following: District I: Canton, Cleveland Heights, and Wheeling; District II: Clinton and Davenport; District III: Buffalo, Peterborough, and St. Catharines; District IV: Camosun, Fraser Delta, Golden Ears, Kitimat, Olympia, Prince George and Victoria; District VI: New Glasgow, and Truro; District VII: Minneapolis and Oryg/St. Paul; District VIII: Edmonton, and Stampede City; District IX: Central Coast; District X: Ft. Lauderdale/Gold Coast, and Naples.

Those clubs that have been able to offset their losses are as follows: District I: Akron, and Western Reserve; District II: Chicago, Dixon, and Madison; District III: Kitchener-Waterloo, and Port Colborne; District IV: Kamloops, North Shore, Seattle/Bellevue, Tacoma, and Vancouver, BC; District VII: McKenzie Island, Minn-Northstar, Nor-West, and Port Arthur; District VIII: Castlegar, Edmonton Crossroads, and Lethbridge; District IX: Coachella Valley, and Long Beach; and District X: Gasparilla.

So as the pessimist might think that the organization will fade away, the optimist believes that these positive actions by members of many clubs will keep spreading the feelings of friendship throughout the world.
