Hey$SCU$Law,

Last$Wednesday$I$met$with$Dean$Kloppenberg$to$raise$some$of$the$issues$and$concerns$that$I$have$heard$from$you$so$far,$here$is$a$brief$reAcap:$

First,$we$discussed$the$“Dean’s$Discretionary$Fund”$that$was$discontinued$this$summer.$Traditionally,$students$have$had$access$to$the$Dean’s$Discretionary$Fund$as$a$source$of$funding$to$attend$conferences$and$other$professional$and$career$building$events.$The$SBA$strongly$feels$that$the$ability$to$attend$these$conferences$and$events$as$a$means$of$building$our$professional$network$and$career$opportunities$both$personally$and$for$Santa$Clara$Law$as$a$whole$is$an$essential$part$of$the$service$that$SCU$Law$should$provide$to$its$students.$After$discussing$the$matter,$Dean$Kloppenberg$has$agreed$to$review$proposals$submitted$by$students$on$an$ad$hoc$basis$through$the$ofLice$of$Susan$Erwin$in$Student$Services.$If$you$are$interested$in$utilizing$this$resource,$please$submit$your$proposal$to$Susan$Erwin$at$least$two$weeks$in$advance$of$the$event.$The$Student$Action$Committee$will$also$include$a$discussion$of$this$in$our$Lirst$meeting,$which$will$take$place$in$the$beginning$of$October$(date$TBD).$

Second,$we$discussed$including$the$cleaning$of$the$Bannan$Lounge$fridge$in$SCU$Law’s$contract$with$facilities.$Five$years$ago,$our$SBA$successfully$advocated$for$a$student$fridge$to$be$included$in$the$Bannan$remodeling$plans.$Apparently,$the$inclusion$of$the$fridge$as$a$student$initiative$resulted$in$responsibility$for$its$maintenance$being$placed$on$the$students$themselves.$Hiring$a$law$student$or$undergraduate$assistant$to$clean$the$fridge$has$caused$problems,$with$law$student$organization$funding$being$available$roughly$two$months$after$the$start$of$the$semester$and$SBA$board$turnovers$occurring$during$the$summer.$Currently$there$is$not$a$consistent$and$efLicient$means$of$maintaining$the$fridge$and$the$SBA$has$advocated$for$its$maintenance$to$be$a$part$of$the$same$cleaning$service$that$the$rest$of$Bannan$Lounge$receives$in$the$interest$of$health$and$safety.$$Discussion$on$the$progress$of$this$initiative$will$also$be$included$in$the$Lirst$Student$Action$Committee$meeting.$

Finally,$Dean$Kloppenberg$has$approved$SCU$Law’s$hosting$of$the$ABA$Law$Student$Division$14th$Circuit$Spring$Conference!$Last$Spring$SCU$Law$was$asked$to$host$this$year’s$conference$by$the$now$14th$Circuit$Governor.$At$the$conference$the$student$governor$is$elected$and$other$ABA$leadership$opportunities$are$promoted.$I$am$excited$about$the$leadership$and$networking$opportunities$that$will$now$be$available$to$much$more$of$our$student$body$this$year!$More$information$soon.

explaining  “IRAC”  and  other  organizing formats for exam

answers. We will emphasize spotting and prioritizing

relevant issues, organizing the law, and developing

analysis of pertinent facts to build successful answers.

Francisco�J.�Rivera�Juaristi�Director,�International�Human�Rights�Clinic�and�Assistant�Clinical�Professor�Prior to coming to Santa Clara, Professor Rivera was an adjunct professor of international law and human rights at the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico. He is a former senior staff attorney at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights of the Organization of American States seated in Costa Rica, where he was also director of that court’s internship program. In the late 1990s, he also served as Executive Director of the Amnesty International Section in Puerto Rico. Britton�Schwartz�International�Human�Rights�Clinic�Prior to joining Santa Clara, Britton Schwartz was Staff Attorney as part of the Shriver Housing Project at Inner City Law Center. Britton has worked as an advocate for rural and indigenous communities in Arizona, California and Latin America, most recently on behalf of indigenous Peruvians as Peru Advocate for Amazon Watch.

David�Sloss�Professor�of�Law,�Director�of�the�Center�for�Global�Law�&�Policy�Professor Sloss is an internationally renowned scholar who has published two books and numerous law review articles addressing the application of international law in domestic courts. His scholarship in this area is informed by a decade of experience in the federal government, where he helped draft and negotiate several major international treaties. Professor Sloss serves frequently as a consultant for U.S. attorneys who seek advice on the domestic application of international law in U.S. courts. Tseming�Yang�Professor�of�Law,�Faculty�Director�of�Graduate�Legal�Programs�Before law teaching, Professor Yang served as an attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, practiced law with the firm of Latham and Watkins in San Francisco, and was a law clerk for the Honorable Rudi M. Brewster of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.

The FALL  2013  Final  Exam  Schedule has  been  posted  on  Claranet.  Please  review  your  exam  dates  and   mes. October  11th is  the LAST day  to  request  a  resched-­‐ule  for  an  administra ve  exam  conflict.
