This church runs like a well-oiled machine. You have developed the most amazing team of volunteers and a lega- cy of knowledge on how to make ministries work – charies, youth groups, food banks, car pools, covered dish dinners, church finances, worship services, and a host of other ministries. I had high hopes for this con- gregaon, and you have exceeded my expectaons. So what can I add to the mix? My moo for the moment is, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I’m watching the gears turn in this well-oiled machine, nocing the skills that various volunteers bring to ministry, and offering a fresh drop of oil as needed. There are jobs that many ministers take on that might righully belong to someone else: Business manager, worship leader, editor, sanitaon, maintenance, etc. The people qualified to fill these roles are vi- tal members of the body of Christ. GCC has many people qualified to fill each of its essenal jobs, people who are more interested in the success of the church than in possessing any parcular job or assignment. In response, I release a long, contented sigh of relief, then roll up my sleeves and get about the work of a pastor. I’m talking to commiee chairs, vising the sick and shut-ins, learning names, leading prayers, and trying to keep sermons scriptural, interesng, and relevant. My job is not more important that any other in this church, nor am I the only person who can do this job. I think GCC has more ordained ministers in the congregaon than any church its size in the South. Each of these ministers is helpful and encouraging. I am so grateful for a church that lets me focus on ministry and for ministers who make sure I see the stepping stones and potholes. We all have a job – and we each have a job. Jesus said, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one He has sent.” (John 6:29) That’s the job we share – to have, express and encourage faith in Jesus Christ as the Chosen One of God. As to my parcular role in all this, I have simplified my job definion, in order to stay fo- cused. My job is to share the Gospel and encourage the saints. The saints – that’s you, the members of this church who already believe. Sharing the Gospel is an assignment for all of us and each of us. There are people in our families and communies that only you can reach. And, there are people who can’t be reached by any of us alone, but who can be reached by all of us working together. “By this all will know that you are my disciples,” Jesus said, “if you love one another.” (John13:35) People, this church is not broken! It is vibrant and alive, and I rejoice over your potenal. The best way to keep things humming – and the best way to smooth out whatever rough edges may exist – is to love one another. That is our assignment. Thank you for allowing my wife and me to be a part of this amazing church family. Yours in Christ, Pastor Joel

The Soul with Sunny Heart God bless the soul with sunny heart

Who brightens up each day By spreading seeds of cheerfulness

While traveling on life’s way. God bless him for the stars of hope

He sets in each one’s sky; For the encouragement he gives

That causes folk to try… With stronger faith to press ahead,

With courage for a mate, And reach for goals, and build anew,

And smile and challenge fate. God bless his laughter and his song

That drives dark clouds away From troubled minds, and paints instead

A rosy-tinted day. God bless the soul with sunny heart

Who’s found in life his place, And serves his God and fellow man

With humble, gentle grace. The world has need of such a man

Who lifts the heart from gloom, And in life’s barren places plants Sweet flowers of love to bloom.

He may serve as some men serve With fame or high degree…

But his good deeds will ever shine Throughout eternity.

The Assignment: Love One Another

My first month as senior pastor at GCC has confirmed my observations before taking the job. This church runs like a well-oiled machine. You have developed the most amazing team of volunteers and a lega-cy of knowledge on how to make ministries work – charities, youth groups, food banks, car pools, covered dish dinners, church finances, worship services, and a host of other ministries. I had high hopes for this con-gregation, and you have exceeded my expectations.

So what can I add to the mix? My motto for the moment is, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I’m watching the gears turn in this well-oiled machine, noticing the skills that various volunteers bring to ministry, and offering a fresh drop of oil as needed.

There are jobs that many ministers take on that might rightfully belong to someone else: Business manager, worship leader, editor, sanitation, maintenance, etc. The people qualified to fill these roles are vi-tal members of the body of Christ. GCC has many people qualified to fill each of its essential jobs, people who are more interested in the success of the church than in possessing any particular job or assignment.

In response, I release a long, contented sigh of relief, then roll up my sleeves and get about the work of a pastor. I’m talking to committee chairs, visiting the sick and shut-ins, learning names, leading prayers, and trying to keep sermons scriptural, interesting, and relevant.

My job is not more important that any other in this church, nor am I the only person who can do this job. I think GCC has more ordained ministers in the congregation than any church its size in the South.

As to my particular role in all this, I have simplified my job definition, in order to stay fo-cused. My job is to share the Gospel and encourage the saints. The saints – that’s you, the members of this church who already believe.

Sharing the Gospel is an assignment for all of us and each of us. There are people in our families and communities that only you can reach. And, there are people who can’t be reached by any of us alone, but who can be reached by all of us working together. “By this all will know that you are my disciples,” Jesus said, “if you love one another.” (John13:35)

People, this church is not broken! It is vibrant and alive, and I rejoice over your potential. The best way to keep things humming – and the best way to smooth out whatever rough edges may exist – is to love one another. That is our assignment. Thank you for allowing my wife and me to be a part of this amazing church family.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Joel

WE Believe!

Christ is risen indeed! Our faith in the resurrec-tion gives us comfort, peace, strength and inspiration. But what about those who do not believe? Belief and faith aren’t the same thing. People who do not believe the truth have simply not seen – or have intentionally ignored – the evidence that informs those who know. Alan Watts, an author and student of world reli-gions, said that belief is a decision on what one accepts as true. It defends itself against idea that challenges or opposes that decision. “Faith, on the other hand,” Watts writes, “is an unreserved opening of the mind to the truth, whatever it may turn out to be. Faith has no preconceptions; it is a plunge into the unknown. Belief clings, but faith lets go.” Can you see the difference? In Jesus’ day, some people didn’t believe he was the Christ in spite of mira-cles and fulfilled prophecies. They were invested in reli-gion, but not walking in faith. The evidence was right in front of them, but they chose to disbelieve. Others had faith – minds open to God’s truth – and discovered that what they heard and saw was true. They allowed the facts to speak for themselves and found that Jesus was indeed the Christ. Some of us have experienced in our own lives that Jesus is the Christ. When we stopped insisting that it couldn’t Continued on page 5 — WE believe!

be true, we saw the evidence and accepted the truth. Some people have a belief that prevents see-ing that truth, but others have simply not experi-enced that indwelling Holy Spirit that testifies to Je-sus Christ. Let me say unequivocally that the church should welcome those who don’t believe. Every creed or declaration of faith starts with “WE be-lieve…” In any congregation, there are people who walk in faith and have come to believe that Jesus is the Christ. Everyone benefits from their faith, even those who don’t yet believe. You don’t have to be-lieve to receive the love of Christians or to the bless-ings that they generously share with everyone.

So in celebration of Easter, let us declare that WE believe in the resurrection! Let’s all have faith -- minds that are willing to believe that God loves us enough to share our pain and experience death, enough to give us hope by raising Jesus from the dead, enough to leave hundreds of witnesses to tes-tify to that truth. God loves you enough to give you the evi-dence you need to accept Jesus Christ. If you still haven’t seen the evidence, then please, come to church and enjoy our hospitality anyway. Maybe lightning will strike or the Holy Spirit will open your eyes. Or, maybe you’ll find the evidence you need in our love for you and for one another.

HE IS RISEN INDEED!
