GUSHLOCAL WATER EDUCATION

BY:

Fun, hands-on & curriculum based water workshops for grades 7 & 8!

Tin Roof’s GUSH program explores the hydrology of your local watershed and the issues that threaten its healthy functioning in a fun, hands-on, curriculum-based environment.

Curriculum links include Water Systems, Pure Substances & Mixtures, Fluids, Interactions Within Ecosystems, System Processes, Developing Skills of Inquiry, Design and Communication & more!

We often think of the social and political communities we belong to but what about the watersheds we live in? GUSH helps students think broadly about where their water comes from and explores some of the factors affecting water quality and quantity close to home. Using

resources from local conservation authorities, students will locate themselves within their watershed, learn about the basic hydrology of the area, assess the “health” of their watershed and identify the primary issues threatening water quality and quantity in your local area.

CONTEXTUALIZE LOCAL WATER ISSUES IN THE CURRICULUM

GET TO KNOW YOUR WATERSHED!

Wetlands play a crucial role in the health of a watershed. They help regulate water quantity, control floods and prevent droughts. And by filtering groundwater they improve

water quality as well. Students will build their own model wetlands to learn their basic functions and to understand the services these complex ecosystems provide.

As our communities grow, we need more space to build the homes, schools, hospitals and malls that we all use. Unfortunately, wetlands are often threatened by the development of these new buildings as well as the pollution that occurs in built environments. Students will explore how different developments affect the surface and groundwater hydrology as well as the functioning of wetlands. In addition, they will play the role of local governments, citizen groups and conservation authorities to develop and debate a watershed land use plan. Together, we will learn just how complex watershed management can be!

GUSH is a great presentation and very hands-on for the students. It has amazing links to the curriculum! There are a lot of teachers at my school who are interested in more GUSH workshops!

Our teachers had an incredible experience with Tin Roof’s program. It was hands-on and very engaging for the students. We hope to host Tin Roof’s programs again next year!

I received rave reviews from my teachers about Tin Roof’s GUSH program. I’ll certainly be telling my colleagues about this awesome initiative!
