Hello my fellow Gunderson Key Clubbers!
I hope you all have been having a great first few weeks of school! I’d like to
give thanks to all those who have volunteered even throughout this busy school year
we’ve had so far. I know that Key Club is amazing and that you’d love to do as
much service as you possibly can, but remember that school is a HUGE priority
which should ALWAYS come first. ALTHOUGH, don’t let this stop
you from doing service! Keep in mind that you need a total of 40 hours of
community service to graduate. I’m POSITIVE the more you get involved within
the club and do service, you’ll be close to – or if not, over the hours required. So try
to organize your priorities between Key Club & School, that way none of the two
conflict with each other throughout the year. All in all, keep up the good
work!
- Your editor, Brandon Roman
A Letter from the Editor.
A special thanks to Laura McGeever (Alycia McGeever’s mother) and Grandpa
Tran (Vicky Le’s grandpa). These two have helped our club a countless number of times by giving our
club rides to various events, ALONG WITH even volunteering to advise these events from time to time. Without
these two we wouldn’t be able to help and serve the community like we do.
This goes to ALL of our other parent / family volunteers as well! We are VERY THANKFUL for
everything you guys do for us. For taking time out of your busy schedules and coming to help support our club,
WE THANK YOU FOR THAT. We would not be able to participate in service or any other events without
the help and assistance from our wonderful family volunteers. WE GREATLY APPRECIATE IT.
A Special Thanks | Page.2
My name is Mary Reber. I am a Member and Board Member of the Kiwanis Club
of San Jose (Downtown Kiwanis Club) I have been a Key Club Advisor for
Gunderson Key Club since 2002. I am also the Chairperson for the Service
Leadership Programs Committee, which is responsible for the four Key Clubs
(Gunderson, Santa Teresa, San Jose and Independence High), the K-Kids Club at
Carolyn Clark Elementary School, Circle-K Club at San Jose State and an Aktion
Club that our Kiwanis Club Sponsors. I help coordinate the activities of all of our
Service Leadership Programs with the Kiwanis Club's activities and budget. I also
do all of the Committee communications and chair the occasional Committee
Meetings to plan DCON with Advisors, combined Kiwanis & Key Club Service /
Fundraising Projects, Key Club Scholarship Program and the Key Club Takeover
Meeting. I also represent the Service Leadership Programs at the Kiwanis Club Board Meetings. Please remember the up-
coming Kiwanis and Key Club projects coming through the end of the year: (1) Thanksgiving Food Drive with Second
Harvest Food Bank (usually the weekend before Thanksgiving) and working shifts in the Kiwanis Club Food Booth at
Christmas in the Park (a great Fundraising Opportunity for your Key Club).
Key Club Advisor: Mr. John Fukasawa
Mr. Fukasawa joined us as a Kiwanis advisor last year. He previously was one
of the advisors to the Santa Teresa Key Club since it was started. He is a past
Lt. Governor of Kiwanis Division 12, and past president of his Kiwanis Club.
He currently is the chair of the Community Services Committee in his
Kiwanis Club and is always looking for service projects where Kiwanis and
Key Clubbers can work together. One of his favorite projects is the Food
Booth at Christmas in the Park. He feels that the most important
contribution Kiwanis makes to the community is the leadership opportunity
it provides through its Service Leadership Programs including Key Club and Circle K. He feels very fortunate to have this
opportunity to serve as one of your advisors.

Hello D12S super villains,
I am Ashley Lam Division 12 South LTG
(lieutenant governor.) What my job is to be a liaison between the district and the division. All the
information that International Key Club gives to the District, and all of the Cali Neva Ha information, I will
send out through the D12S reflector to you all.
I am excited for the start of the school year and I know that school is really busy so don't forget to
always strive to do the best that you can. Also, school year doesn't mean that community
service events are ignored! We still do as much service as we can to contribute to the Division's goal for 18,000
service hours by the end of this term. Please feel free to contact me with any comments, questions, or
concerns. :)

Hey Ghosties! C: I just want to thank everyone who is staying active and starting off this year with the spirit of service! As I have said before, service is super important and I want you all to participate in as many events as you can! "You must be the change you wish to see" and by volunteering, you are changing the community one step at a time! Also, I want to mention that by signing up for many events, you can receive the title of MEMBER OF THE MONTH! You will be able to keep Clyde (our club bear) for the whole month, your photo will be displayed on the Key Club bulletin board, and you'll receive a certificate! Another benefit of being member of the month is being closer to reaching the requirements for DCON (District Convention)! This year's DCON is going to be in Anaheim,
CA and it's going to be a bit pricey, so start saving up now! There will be requirements to attend DCON such as volunteering for Julian St Inn, Loaves and Fishes, Books Aloud, Christmas in the Park, selling Jamba Juice tickets, attending Division Council Meetings (DCMs) and Club Meetings. It shouldn't be a problem if you continue to do service, help with fundraisers, and attend meetings. So, stay ACTIVE, have FUN, and let's make this year a great year filled with SERVICE! <3 You all are awesome! Oh and if you have any questions at all, the board and I will be happy to assist you! C:
President: Pauline Nguyen
Hello KEY CLUBBERS!
How do you feel? I really miss you all. I want to say THANK YOU SOOOO
MUCH for volunteering throughout the summer and continuing as school starts. I hope you continue to volunteer throughout the year. It's an amazing experience to help out and volunteer. Everyone is really friendly towards you and appreciative. I am appreciative! I am so happy to have such dedicated and spirited members like you all. I want you to keep that up and become better. We have a lot of events coming up, so come and join us. Remember the graduation requirement for community service is 40 hours! But why stop there? Get 100 hours and you can apply for the Jefferson Award. OUUU does that look good on your college transcript. Although all these do benefit you for college, do it for the service and the sake of helping. It's such a great deed you're doing. Together we can change the world and make it a better place. Why not give instead of take? With all the community service you do; while giving you're taking in leadership skills, speaking skills, and friends. We make community service fun! SO
JOIN US and make a move in the world. WOO GHOSTIES!
Vice President: Vivian Nguyen

Hey Key Clubbers (:
It's your secretary here! Thank you to all who are consistently being an active member!
You guys are amazing! But remember, when you do sign up for events, DO
NOT FLAKE! If you do, you must tell the officers ahead of time, so we can find a
replacement! And remember to NEVER sign up to events for other members! They
must sign up for it themselves. Finally, if anyone is interested in
knowing how many service hours you have, MESSAGE
ME, and I'll be more than happy to tell you!
Secretary: Vicky Le
Hey Ghosties! There are many fundraising opportunities for you participate in now. We'll be having Wingstop fundraisers every fourth
Wednesday, so if you love chicken and good company then come join us! There will be another restaurant fundraiser every month too, so stay tuned to find out which one is next. Jamba Juice is another FUNraiser we have monthly! For more info please read the Jamba Juice article! Remember that all these fundraisers help benefit you! They lower the cost by a lot so you guys don't have to pay full price for all the fun events Key Club offers. I want to thank all you members for our joining our awesome club and hope you're all having a wonderful year! Remember to go to as many volunteer opportunities as possible since they're both fun and they help our community! C:

Welcome Back Luau: 9/1
Thank you to those who went to the welcome back social. It
made me really happy seeing and get to know everyone. We had a
water balloon fight, potluck, and played many ice breaker games.
There will be many more in the future so make sure to
keep a look out! – Vivian Nguyen
Race to the End Of Summer: 9/9
Race to the End of Summer benefits the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society. Their mission is to Cure leukemia,
lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. They do their
best to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
Their priority is to ensure that patients with Blood Cancer can
live a better, longer life. This race took place at Hellyer Lake
Park! It was SO MUCH FUN! We passed out water,
Gatorade, and this energy gel(which happened to taste like
poop in a bag) Thank you to CHRISTY, JON, VIVIAN,
PAMMELA, and CYNTHIA for waking up early and volunteering with me at 6am! And special shout out
to Jon Greene! I hope you had fun at your FIRST Key Club service event! YAY! Thanks you
guys for showing so much spirit! The workers there kept on commenting how fun and spirited we were! Way to give
Gunderson a good name! I’m so proud of you guys! – Vicky Le

Almaden Art & Wine Festival: 9/16
Thank you to the 15+ people who volunteered at this year’s Art & Wine
Festival at Almaden Lake Park. We volunteered at the Kid Area, so we
volunteered at the bouncy house, spin art, obstacle course, face painting,
carnival games, and more! I know everyone had so much fun!
It was great watching the little kids have such a great time, and to be able to
be a part of it, felt really heart warming. This little girl even asked me to go
in the bouncy house with her because she was too scared to go by herself.
HOW CUTE IS THAT? You probably didn’t think of it this way, but
we helped those kids experience a fun day, that they will never forget. So
GIVE YOURSELVES A PAT ON THE BACK! – Vicky Le
Fall Rally North: 8/26 Hey guys! Want to have fun? GO TO FRN! FRN aka Fall Rally North is a Key Club get together and this year it'll be at
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. You'll be able to go on very fun rides and participate in a rally with a spirit battle
against other divisions! We won last year and were given the spirit stick. FRN is not only just fun and games, we'll
also be donating money to PTP (pediatric trauma prevention), by auctioning off our LTG’S and
District Board! You'll be meeting key clubbers from all over Northern California, making new friends, an
having the time of your life. The price is 45 dollars and 13 dollars more if you would like the Lunch buffet deal! We
lowered the prices for you all by fundraising so don't miss this great deal! – Vivian Nguyen

Division Council Meetings (DCM’s) :
What is a DCM? Well, DCM stands for Division Council
Meeting and this is when all schools from our division (12
South) meet and report on what their club has done that past
month. This meeting is led by our LTG (Lieutenant Governor),
which is Ashley Lam and she announces important dates and
information to the clubs. Usually, DCMs are followed by either a
service project or some sort of social event such as ice skating,
games, bowling, etc. From personal experiences, this is a great opportunity to meet new people within our division,
make new friendships, and spend time together. You'll never know what to expect and it's lots of fun seeing new and
familiar faces! Also, our club requires you to go to at least 5 DCMs in order to lower your
price for DCON! So, it's kind of a win-win situation! You get to see your friends while reaching the requirements! c:
If you have any more questions, contact anyone on the board or me!
– Pauline Nguyen
Jamba Juice Fundraiser’s
Our club is also preselling and selling
Jamba Juice every month on a specified date, so be sure to
check out tickets! The next one will be October 18th,
followed by next month’s on November 15th! For those who don't
know how the process works, you check out tickets from Ms. Buelna's
room and try to ask as many people as you can to buy them. When
you've got a buyer, circle the drink they want, fill out the bottom, then
cut it and give it to the customer so they can come on the set date and
get their drink. People can also come on the date and buy drinks, but
remember that there's a limited number if they didn't preorder. As
always, thanks for supporting our club. – Elena Miller
