Summer is here! Swim team has been in full swing since mid-

May and Sailing camp is kicking off within the next week. If you

have a young sailor interested in learning how to sail, it is not too

late. Please contact Sam V for more details.

Speaking of the sailing, the Viper has arrived! It was

delivered to Fairhope Yacht Club in time for the Opening Day

Regatta on May 21st and 22nd. The GYC had a great showing

the regatta and we finished 3rd in the Viper Class. This was a

very good start for our sailors and I know they will continue to

improve as they get used to the new boat. If you see Sam V

around the Club, ask him for a look at the boat. He is very proud

of it and loves to show it off. Thanks again to all of the members

who have donated to the purchase of the Viper. If you have not

contributed and would like to, it is not too late. Please contact

Jan in the office and she can set up the donation for you.

The end of May also closed out our membership drive.

Thank you to Damian, the membership committee and all of the

members who have sponsored new members to our club this

year. The end of the membership drive does not mean we are

not accepting new members. Please continue to talk about the

Club to prospective members and sponsoring those who would

be interested in joining. Thanks again for everybody’s help so far

this year.

We had our first Friday Fun Night in April and the first event

was a huge success. The kids had a great time on the 3rd floor

with supervised arts and crafts. The last Friday in May was our

next Fun Night and the kids really enjoyed the Pop Up Park.

During both events, the

parents equally had a good

time downstairs in the Chart

Room and enjoyed a

fantastic meal. Thanks to

Courtney Collier for getting

the events set up and thank

to Amy Chatelain and all of

the others who helped with

the two events. The next

Friday Fun Night is July 1st

and I am looking forward to seeing many of our young parents

and their children at the Club.

June represents another busy month at the club. We will

host the Challenge Cup Sailing Regatta on June 17th, 18th and

19th. Even if you are not a sailor, I encourage you to come

down, enjoy the weekend and festivities, including Saturday

night’s band on the deck. This is one of the biggest regatta

events of the summer and the Club is always a lot of fun when

we host this regatta weekend.

This summer is already off to a good start. Steve, our

committee chairs, and staff have worked hard to make the Club a

fun, exciting place to be this summer. Please come down early

and often and make the most out of enjoying the GYC. It is going

to be a great summer.

See you at the Club!!

Sailing Committee Update On May 14th-15th GYC placed second in the Spring Regatta at Buccaneer Yacht Club! There were 11 clubs sailing Flying Scots at this capdevielle event, and our skippers and crew were Samson Vasquez, David Bolyard, Joshua Grumme and Joel Grumme. Chris Alexander and Ana Gayle Christian also represented GYC in the VX One class finishing another very respectable second place. Dawson Doucet crewed on a VX One with a 3rd place finish. The GYA Opening Regatta was hosted by Fairhope Yacht Club on May 21st and 22nd. GYA Commodore Michael Hage and GYC Commodore James Kaigler attended the flag raising ceremony kicking off the 2016 GYA Sailing season. GYC had a capdevielle team racing the Flying Scot along with the Viper 640 racing for the first time. Samson Vasquez, Sam Hopkins Sr., Teal Salloum, Steve Nolte, Sam Hopkins Jr., Hugh Hawkins, Jacob Seicshnaydre, and Crocket Collier raced for

GYC on both boats. Despite a rigging issue in the first race causing a dnf, the Viper team placed 3rd overall with some first and second place finishes in a fleet of 18 boats. We also had Teal Salloum Jr, James Edwards, Joshua and Joel Grumme and Mallory Edwards and Ali Ware racing 420’s with Mallory and Ali getting the win. In the VX One fleet, Chris Alexander and Ana Gayle Christian finished 3rd and Dawson Doucet crewed on the

winning VX One! The GYC participation has been awesome, and our sailors are making their presence known with some great finishes. We will be fine tuning our Viper and hope to bring home many wins for GYC in the future! Please congratulate these sailors on their efforts, and thank you for your continued support for sailing. To contribute to the Viper 640 fund, please contact Jan Farnsworth at 228-863-2263 ext. 300 or email at [email protected].

GYC Speckled Trout Shootout Produces Big Specks

The second fishing event of the summer, the GYC Speckled Trout Shootout, saw anglers bringing some nice fish to the scales and a great evening on the water. Mark Loughman made a run at first place with a 3.21 lb speck but was bested when one of the teams pulled out all of the stops by flying in their trout ringer Tony Caranna from Miami to take top honors with a 3.22 lb fish. The Loughman crew was still the top winner for the night by also taking home the prize for the winning stringer of 14.25 lbs. There were some great catches at the cleaning table and all anglers were happy to walk away with their winnings because the Boddie crew called in just before scales closed to say that even thought they clearly would have beaten everyone they were on a hot of a bite and planned to keep on fishing. It looks like the Boddie crew will have to prove their metal at the Chandeleur Rendezvous. The next fishing event on the calendar is the Shannon Waller Tournament July 30th and 31st. We hope to grow this annual tournament and invite anyone who is interested in helping with planning to call Bill Pittman at (228) 697-7370. Tight Lines!

What a great start to what we believe will be a very exciting summer at the club. I received numerous compliments about our Cinco de Mayo Party, Mother’s Day Jazz Brunch with Jesse Hill, Friday Night Kids Activity and all other entertainment that was provided. Our professional staff is always ready to serve these well-attended events. Summer is an extremely busy time at the club with a number of children using our facility. Parents please remind your kids of our safety policies including no running especially in the clubhouse and parking lot areas. No playing on the stairwells or the rock pile southwest of our beach. The safety of our members and staff is a very important part of the success of this club. We encourage families to enjoy our amenities safely. We have the pleasure of hosting the GYA Offshore Challenge Cup Regatta again this year. The dates of the Regatta are Thursday, June 16th through Sunday, June 19th. Please try to visit the club this weekend and show your support. We have entertainment planned Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The first member to go on our Gulfport Yacht Club Facebook page and answer the riddle correctly will win a $25.00 credit on their GYC account. Good Luck!!

It’s a special time of year. June marks the beginning of the lovely summer days we all cherish. The kids are out of school and we are able to spend more time enjoying all our club has to offer. The Ladies Auxiliary has had a busy spring. Our $5,000 Drawdown and Silent Auction was a huge success! It was an evening filled with great fun, food and music. Five winners split the jackpot. Michael Seichsnaydre, Shannon Weatherly, Michelle Webber, Kent Nicaud and Jason Smith each took home $1,000. Bernice Simmons won our 50/50 pot. We have received much positive feedback and were even asked if this was going to be the First Annual Drawdown. The drawdown committee, consisting of myself, Judy Karl, Dottie Long, Jo Ellen Mechatto, Nell Gibson, Jeanette Guel, Tonya Rode, Lisa Fagan and Judy Seichsnaydre would like to thank everyone who supported us by buying a ticket or donating Silent Auction items. I would like to thank my hard-working committee for their outstanding job. These ladies are rock stars! Special thanks also go to Linda Domino for donating beautiful table centerpieces, Commodore Kaigler for his help and support, and to Steve Chatelain, Amy Chatelain and Jan Farnsworth. We could not have done this without them! The Ladies Auxiliary uses the money we make on fundraisers to purchase items for our club for everyone to enjoy. At our April

Ladies Auxiliary meeting, we voted to purchase shade umbrellas. We are excited to announce that we just bought 22 beautiful turquoise umbrellas to go around the pool area, on the 1st floor and on the 2nd floor balconies. You can now sit

outside under the shade and enjoy lunch or drinks and the beautiful view. Our May 25th meeting featured the Gulfport Galleria of Fine Arts. Our hostesses Nell Gibson, Jeanette Guel and Debbie Weihing provided beautiful floral and art themed table decorations to go along with our program. Lunch was the always

delicious GYC Fried Chicken and Catch of the Day with Lemon Butter sauce. Our June 22nd meeting will be a Mother/Daughter Tea. Come have a great time with an important woman in your life - grandmother, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece or good friend! We look forward to seeing you at all our upcoming summer events. Happy Sailing!

The number of bridge tables at the GYC has continued to increase and can now be seen on any weekday. It is great to see the added interest in a game that can be played for fun; as well as, one that also offers us a challenge with every hand that is dealt. Margaret Blount had some challenges at the tables prior to our auxiliary meeting, but she met them successfully. She kept bidding them up and took first place, with Dinah Jordan sailing into second. Both ladies received $10 credits at the club and our congratulations. Are you wanting to get back to the bridge table? If you are, please do come. You will find lots of opportunity to play and refresh your skills and techniques of bidding. Are you wanting to learn to play bridge? If you are, please do come. You will make new friends and find lots of players to help you learn the art of the game. “We all play for the fun of the game!!” Deane Nelson JoAnn VanAtta 228-284-2014 304-695-0660
