Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo Interesting video at GulfCoastMotorSports.com fact is it may be the oldest “home movie” you ever see. About 107 years ago this film was shot in

1906, This 35mm film was taken by a camera mounted on the front of a cable car as it`s traveling down Market Street .

“You feel as if your really there, standing at the front looking down the street, amazing piece of historic film.”

Cars where everywhere, it’s a wonder there wasn’t an accident while we were watching it. Check it out. It’s amazing the difference 100 yrs or so make.

Some of us remember the “Glory Years” or at least days gone by. (guilty) I guess you could say buying a car or truck that reminds you of your favorite time in life, helps. But I’ll bet our best memories took place while we were driving them around. Getting away from work, school, the house, or wherever… just getting into your car/truck/bike gave you freedom to choose.. “get out on the hwy lookin’ for adventure”

There’s something to be said about the people we know who drive their hot rods or classic’s a lot…..looks like they are having a good time. Usually when you get this group of car people around the coffee pot and the “remember when” conversation starts flowing, They seem to laugh a lot. The stories best remembered are the “good times” and the “funny ones” that make everyone laugh. With them it’s all about the socializing, seeing their old friends and making new ones….

People ask me all the time what I think about the “Trailer Queens”…. well, they are the “Show Cars” and I say put them on the trailer and take them to the show. Nothing like seeing that amazing paint job, chromed out everything, countless hours of details, all just to be appreciated. I love a good car show just like the next guy.

But, why is it when you leave the show and pass thru the parking lot, there are cars and trucks that could have been in the show, just parked there. Why didn’t they enter the show? Didn’t they feel welcome, or they couldn't compete against the “Show Cars”. Was it a question of money? Maybe the promoters need to show them, there’s more to the event than just the awards. Make it point to welcome the new person…..

The show season is getting ready to take off and, as you will read, some people are already planning vacation time and their days off around a car show or weekend event. Maybe yours!! What will you do to get the cars out of the parking lot?

Till next month…

I still need to mount the old shotgun on it… but here’s a picture of my “Redneck Love Seat” - Built in Moss Point, MS with American made parts by Mike Halmi. Mike, I have friends who are looking at that picture and figuring out how to put an engine, front end, steering wheel, on it and drive it at the Atomic Blast…. Jimbo

Jimbo, I want to thank all of the members of the Coast Cruizers that participated in donating their time and money to provide such a memorable Christmas for my family at such a time in our lives that has been devastating with the lose of our son. Your love has shown that there are good people in this world that do have love for their fellow man. My family wants to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done for us. I’m sending just a few of the pictures, of some happy kids, on Christmas morning.

Sincerely The Boykin Family / Mobile Alabama

21 YEARS Once again the Southern Who Street Rod Association leads the wave of

upcoming car shows. This was the 21st annual winter rod run. Over 100 Rodders took advantage of the great weather and drove their cars and trucks to the Best Western parking lot on January 18-20.

This was the show that used to be held at the Diamondhead, MS motel but when Southern Who moved their headquarters to Louisiana, club members found a new location for the show.

This turned out to be great show and I must admit the new location was a really welcoming change from the old location. Plenty of ammonites close by and very easy to find show area.

So if you didn’t make it this year, you will only hear what a good time we had and can’t believe you didn’t go!!

Thanks, Jimbo. We are grateful for your support of our club and its events. BTW, the show being advertised, A Day At Charlies, is a 100% benefit show with a good story. Joe Henderson's nephew was saved at St. Jude's Children's Hospital almost a decade ago. Every year since, Joe clears the lot at Henderson Ford for this show, with all the proceeds going to St. Jude's. Thanks for your part in helping to make this event a success.

A Sobering Situation

Early day life in Texas could be harsh. A young couple, married in Abilene, homesteaded a place near Snyder, some distance west of Abilene. The first winter there was really bad and the young man caught pneumonia and died. Not wanting to stay there by herself, the young lady moved back to Abilene with her family.

As soon as the weather warmed up the young lady decided she would like to have her deceased husbands remains moved to the cemetery nearby so she could visit his grave.

She went to the local funeral director to see about getting this done. The funeral director agreed to take care of the arrangements and sent two of his men to dissenter the remains at Snyder and bring them back to Abilene.

The two men, Sam and Jake, traveled to Snyder by buggy and located the cemetery where the young man was buried. After digging up the coffin, they discovered that there was no room in the buggy to put it. Not wanting to be out the expense of getting a wagon, they decided to take the body from the coffin and place it on the buggy seat between them.

After filling in the grave the two got started on their way back to Abilene. By this time they decided that they needed a good stiff drink. Stopping at a saloon in Snyder, they didn't want to leave the corpse in the buggy by itself so they spotted a drunk loitering nearby and offered him fifty cents to watch their buggy for them while they went inside to get a drink, telling him that their buddy was asleep.

After the two men went inside the saloon the drunk they left to watch the buggy started talking to their 'buddy.' After not being able to get a reply from him, the drunk walked over to the buggy and shook him to wake him up.

That is when the drunk realized it was a corpse in the buggy. This presented an interesting situation.

Going to the door of the saloon and looking inside the man saw that the two men from the buggy were drinking pretty heavy. Knowing that they would be really drunk when they came out, he decided to have some fun.

Removing the corpse from the buggy, he propped it up against the porch post in front of the saloon and got in the buggy in its place. Seeing the two men coming out of the saloon, the man stiffened up across the buggy seat just as the corpse had been.

The two thanked the corpse for watching their buggy, untied the horse from the hitching rail, got in the buggy and started on their way.

A short time later Sam turns to Jake and says, "Jake, does this corpse feel a little warm to you?" "It sure does," Jake replied.

At this time the corpse says, "If you had been where I have, you would be warm too."

Sam and Jake sobered up, swore off liquor and never took another drink.

I just love a story with a happy ending, don't you? : Rusty

A couple of weeks ago I went to Mobile with my son and daughter-in-law to the Fresh Market store. He wanted a few items that you can't get here on the coast.

I told everyone we were going to Carrabba's to eat lunch. If you like Italian food that isn't all pasta, that is the place to go. Carrabba's is nothing like Olive Garden. The atmosphere is completely different. The lighting is soft and the interior is laid out in away that you can carry on a conversation and not have to talk loud to hear each other.

Every item on the menu doesn't have pasta like Olive Garden. The entrée comes with one or two side dishes and bread. Oh.. don't forget the wine!

The salmon come with a tomato-basil topping that really set the salmon off. The tomatoes are crushed tomatoes, not a sauce or paste. The spaghetti comes with a tomato sauce made from fresh tomatoes and has the crushed tomatoes in the sauce also. You can also get the spaghetti with meat balls that are made with pork and beef. The texture is firm and has a great flavor. The pork just adds that little something that most meat balls don't have. I can't list all of the great dishes they have here, but another one is the wood oven cooked pizza. They use wood to heat the brick oven to cook the pizzas and wood aroma adds to the atmosphere. A pizza cook in a brick oven has a crust that you can't get at any pizza joint.

Some of the sides that come with your entree can be soups which I recom-mend if you don't want the house salad and several different vegetables, which may be what is in season at that time.

They open for lunch at 11am on Sat and Sun. only. And open Mon thru Sun for dinner and close at 10pm.

Go on the internet and put in Carrabba's.com and look at the menu. They have specials everyday, you can’t go wrong eating at Carrabba's.

The Carrabba's in Mobile is on Airport Blvd. If you go to Panama City Beach, to Emerald Coast, there is a Carrabba's on the main highway

Jimbo, I spoke with you on Thursday and you asked

me to send you some pictures of my car that we are working on. So, I included pictures and a short timeline of progress:

I traded some upholstery work for this Dodge and a 1967 Chevelle 4 door sedan in July 2004. My husband Jim thought I was crazy for wanting this car!

In the fall of 2006 we began working on re-moving the body off of the frame and replacing it with the frame from the Chevelle donor car.

I had a hard time making up my mind which kind of engine I wanted in the car, and really did not want to just drop a 350 in it like everyone else does. So, I traded some more work for a cool 360 out of a Charger. We rebuilt the engine, painted it, and made it fit!

I also added disc brakes on dropped spindles, and vintage air.

Well, then naturally comes the paint scheme. And just like a woman, I could not make up my mind! At first I wanted a sparkle shiny silver roof, which we had painted. And my plan was to have a flat rat rod color in a blue painted on the rest of the car.... I drove the car for a few years with the pretty roof and no other paint.

People kept asking me what my next step was going to be and I would simply tell the truth: I don't know yet.

My husband was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2010 and all plans were on hold.

This year I was determined to finish the car and set myself the goal to premier it at the Mopar show at the Battleship in April 2013, so far I am on schedule.

In the spring I ordered some original paint chips from an e-bay vendor and figured I might as well go with an original color combo. It took several more months for me to actually make up my mind, but I finally did! I opted for the bimini blue and midnight blue combination that was offered in 1953.

Jim and I prepped the body and took the car completely apart, fenders, trunk lid, hood, etc. We wanted to do as much as possible on our own.

In September I took my baby to Owens Paint and Body in Spanish Fort, Alabama, for the paint job. We picked the car up two months later and started putting it back together. And as you can see, it is beautiful!

Next step is the interior, and as usual, I have not made up my mind yet either! I have narrowed the choices down, and should be fabricating and install-ing it soon after Christmas.

Thanks for your interest. I will keep you updated on further progress. Shirley Olson - www.riverrags.20m.com

E nough of this cabin fever… I don't know

how yankees put up with it. A couple of months and I'm already pacing. It's a great time for organizing and planning. I've gotten my mancave all cleaned up and organized for another car show season.

Planning, I've had way too much time for that. It's been a busy off season planning and putting together Terry Mason's Hot Rod Show. I have really worked hard to make the music show a special car show memory lane experience that will keep evolving as it goes.

For way too long, folks have just played old music at car shows and talked. We have tried to put together an incredible selection of music and present it in a way that moves people, (a radio show style format) gets them excited and gets the memories flooding back.

Oh well, it's time to look ahead on the calendar and kind of plan out the first part of my car show season. This time of the year I always start a new calendar for car shows. I like those big 2ft X 2ft calendars I can put on the wall that has a good 2” X 2” square for each day. That way I can glance over and see what's coming up for a whole month.

Now just because I plan it, doesn't mean I get to always go. Life can be way too complicated sometimes and plans don't work out. But it's a plan anyway.

Let me encourage all car clubs…get your cruise-in and car show information in to Jimbo here at the magazine as soon as possible. People, plan ahead. You will be surprised what cars you get when you let car enthusiast know about your event. It gives them an excuse to come and visit your city or town, spend money and meet new car folks or just a good excuse to be in that part of the country on that particular day.

small town atmosphere, (Mayberry USA) a ton of vendors and really nice cars, this is the show for you. Charlie Farmer and Terry Webb do a great job with this show.

March ends with the 15th Annual Gnat Nationals March 30th in Bay St. Louis, MS. The show is held at the historic old train depot, a great location, but as the name says be sure and bring your gnat spray!

The first on my annual list is a must for the 1st Saturday night of the month, every month, March through October. Is the Coast Cruizers Cruize-in at Edgewater Mall, Biloxi, MS. (October, we move it to the 2nd Saturday night because of Mega Cruize-in.) That's the one they put me in charge of and we are working to keep it the best Cruize-in in South Mississippi. We welcome everyone for great 50's, 60's & 70's music, 50/50 and the best door prizes. You'll also get to be the first to sample the 2013 sound of Terry Mason's Hot Rod Show. The Cruize-in just gets bigger and bigger. That's the first thing that goes on my 2013 calendar.

February, let's see here….The 34th Annual Singing River Street Rod Association's Rod Run. February 22-24 in Biloxi (D'iberville) is always a good choice for the February calendar.

March…if you like Hot Rods, there's the Atomic Blast 2 at the Gulfport Dragway in Gulfport, MS March 15-17. A fun festival type show with ol' skool hand drop drag racing and a lot of great events throughout the weekend. At that show you see all types of cars and they welcome everyone.

My other March favorite is up in Wiggins, MS, the Pine Hill Festival and Car Show, sponsored by the Red Creek Classics Car Club. If you like

April… car shows really get going and I'm hoping to make all these. There's a new event in Gulfport, MS April 5-7 called Gulf Coast Auto Show, an open car show and weekend on the Coast that looks like it could build into a truly nice event.

April 13 there is a big car show in my hometown of Dothan, AL. It's called the Tri-State Bar B-Q Festival and Car Show at the Houston County Farm Center. This is a great combination, BBQ competition and Car Show… I'm in… it's put on by the New South Cruisers. It's a serious BBQ competition with a $10,000 pay out and a great Car Show.

Slidell, LA has a big show in April, the 16th Annual Camellia City Car Show…a 300+ car show held at beautiful John Slidell Park. The date is Saturday April 20th hosted by the Coastal Cruisers, it's always a good turn out and a great show.

Page 11: Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine

11 FEBRUARY 2013 www.CoastCruizers.com

May… one of my favorites is Burning Up the Beaches in Ft Walton Beach, FL May 3-5. It's an all inclusive type car show where they feed you Friday and Saturday night and give you a show each night with a $5,000 drawdown Saturday night, just a good time!

These are the car shows on my radar for planning purposes in the first half of the season. Later in the season, I've got the 2nd Annual Georgia Moonshine Cruise-in at Hiawassee, GA on my agenda for August 12-14 up in the mountains. The mountains is the only place I'd do a car show down south in August!

If you don't have your car show listed early, how am I supposed to know about it. I'm pretty good, but I can't read minds yet. Get your car shows in to Jimbo today, so a fella like me can plan on coming to see your show, when my calendar's full, it's full.

Get your Hot Rod out of the garage and enjoy that 17 FOREVER…Hot Rod state of mind.

Til next month…

YEAR OLD FILM CLIP THIS IS WELL WORTH WATCHING … JUST TO

SEE HOW FAR WE HAVE COME A 100 YEARS Perhaps the oldest "home movie" that you will ever see!

This film was "lost" for many years. It was the first 35mm film ever that has come to light. It was taken by camera mounted on the front of a cable car as it`s traveling down the street. You feel as if your really there, standing at the front looking down the street, amazing piece of historic film.

The number of automobiles is staggering for 1906. Absolutely amazing! The clock tower at the end of Market Street at the Embarcadero wharf is still there. ... How many "street cleaning" people were employed to pick up after the horses? Talk about going green! Great historical film!

This film, originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn with the Niles Essanay figured out exactly when it was shot. From New York trade papers announcing the film showing to the wet streets from Recent heavy rainfall & shadows indicating time of year & actual weather and conditions on historical record, even when the cars were registered (he even knows who owned them and when the plates were issued!)..

It was filmed only four days before the Great California Earthquake of April 18th 1906, and shipped by train to NY for processing. Amazing, but true!

No wonder there had to be laws created to regulate driving habits.

This is insane. Good thing they couldn't go very fast. This is a fascinating movie. A camera on the front of a street

car 107 years ago. I watched it a couple of times. Look at the hats the ladies were wearing and the long dresses. Some of the cars had the steering wheels on the right side, I

wonder when they standardized on the left? Sure was still a lot of horse drawn vehicles in use. Mass transit looked like the way to get around. Looks like everybody had the right of way. One thing I notice is how well dressed the men are and even the boys

and also how few women are on the street. http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=NINOxRxze9k

ingredient and completing it with two paper straws. Umm it was so good! I next headed to the bakery two doors down and bought a brownie to

stave off starvation until it was lunchtime. They served it on that waxed paper and it was still warm. Now, that was some good eating!

Stopping by Tommy's on the way home allowed me to be of assistance. He was radiusing the wheel wells on his 1949 Ford, and I was able to help. He needed extra hands to do measurements and I came by just at the right time. This was going to be one cool ride. It was sprayed with flat black paint. I didn't think there was anything much cooler than that. I still like it. It just screams hot rod to me. Tommy nor I had much money, but we had a lot of dreams, and we worked hard toward them. He didn't mind me sharing in his.

This had turned out to be one terrific day! Gotta Cruise!

Cubby

It was 7 o'clock on Saturday and I was out the door. The day was sunny and the year was 1958. I grabbed my bicycle and was on my way. Just down the street I stopped and knocked on Larry's door to ask if he wanted to go to get a haircut with me. “No”, he had to get his chores done first. Off I went again, down the street in a big rush.

There was “Coshow's Market” right across from the grade school. A dime's worth of candy sure sounded like a good idea. As I walked into the store, the bell jingled above the door. “Hi Kiddo”, Mr. Coshow shouted as I entered. He was wearing his butcher's apron standing behind the meat counter. I said hello and got down low to get a close look at the candy counter. It was massive. This was the best place in town for a large candy selection. There were “Big Time”, “Milky Way”, “Mounds”, and “Milkshake” candy bars. There were “Chuckles” jelly candies. There were, Kits, “Necco”, and “Nick-L-Sips”, and just about any brand of candy that was made. I bought a “Hollywood” candy bar, and five pieces of “Bazooka” bubble gum. I gave Mr. Coshow my dime and I enjoyed the familiar cha-ching as he pushed down the button and the cash drawer opened. Out the door I went, hearing the bell tinkle again, onto my bike and rode quickly away.

I decided to make a detour and see if Jon was home. His house was just a block away. Jon said he didn't want to go to the barber shop, so we talked a bit and I shared a piece of “Bazooka” with him. Soon, we said our farewells, and I rode off to get my ears set out.

The barber pole was spinning as I opened the door. There was always anticipation to find out just how many men were there waiting for a haircut. I looked around and there were only three of the red vinyl covered chairs that were unoccupied. One was close to the magazine rack, so I took it. I picked up a copy of “Beetle Bailey”. It was one I hadn't read before, but the facts are that I was listening to the conversations going on around me and not concentrating on Sarge and Otto. The shop was bristling with stories.

There were three generations of hair cutters in Lovell's Barber Shop. George was the elder, then son Eddie, and his son Reggie. This was a family shop. They worked on a rotation system. You could wait for a specific barber if you wanted. Appointment? Are you kidding? They didn't make no stinkin' appointments! George talked faster than he cut hair. He also shook a little due to his advanced age. Eddie was middle aged and probably the glue that held the shop together. Reggie was the youngster and was the one you wanted for the latest styles. It was a well balanced operation.

My time arrived and George was the barber. I was getting my usual “Hollywood Burr” so there was no need to wait for anyone else. I hopped into the chair, George put the paper around my neck, then attached the cape. He got out the electric clippers and made a short stubble out of my hair, leaving a tuft in the front. He then trimmed that with the scissors, shaved my neck with the hot foam out of that machine, splashed on some Witch Hazel, took off the cape and paper, then used the talc infused brush to clean the tiny hairs off my neck. It never worked! Those itchy hairs remained long after the haircut was finished. I paid my dollar (haircuts were $1.00 the entire time I went to Lovell's) and received my free piece of bubble gum. Out the door I ran.

I could have gone straight home after that, but since I was already downtown, I headed to the Rexall for a Coke. They had great fountain Cokes that came out of a red and white machine that resembled the top end of an outboard motor. I asked Susie for a lemon Coke, and she squirted a shot of lemon syrup in the glass before filling it with the main

The Business Deal Boudreaux goes into a ladies shop to buy black bras, size 38. The

store keeper, a rich guy, known for his skills as a businessman, says that black bras are rare and that he is finding it very difficult to buy them from his suppliers. Therefore he has to charge $50.00 for them. Boudreaux buys 25 pairs.

He returns a few days later and this time orders fifty. The owner tells him that they have become even harder to get and charges him $60.00 each.

Boudreaux returns a month later and buys the store's remaining stock of 50, and this time for $75.00 each. The owner is somewhat puzzled by the large demand for black size 38 bras and asks Boudreaux, ". . . please tell me - What do you do with all these black bras?"

Boudreaux answers: "I cut them in half and sell them as skull caps to you rich guys for $200.00 each." . . . and that’s why dem Coonass’s are on reality TV! Business is Business!

The Matinee Rocker: By: DD Thunders. I hope everyone had a great Christmas/holiday season! Santa was good to ole DD this year. How did he know I needed some new Rockmount western shirts for stagewear? Thanks riendeer rider. Hollywood has been cranking out the big releases at a relentless pace. Lots of good films coming out that I wasn't able to catch any independent offerings. this is a good thing. The movie business money trickles down to the Indies. When A/B listers make bank they can do their pet projects and I bet we have many small films coming out late spring early summer!

First up is a little left of center action movie Django Unchained written and directed by everybody's favorite crazy story teller Quentin Taratino. It is rated R and has a running time of 2h 37m. Quentin went from film buff blockbuster employee to A list director/screenplay superstar with the release of Pulp Fiction in 1994. He has had some successful releases like Kill Bill 1 and 2 and don't forget Resivour Dogs. But is has been awhile since he packed a marquee with this many big names. The subject matter has been told many times but not quite like this. To watch Hollywood heart throb Leonardo D portray a twisted, vile slave owner with a poison tongue and a bad dental hygiene throw himself into the character was a fun to watch but hard to listen to at times. I read interviews where the cast, not just Leanardo, had a rough time walking the walk and talking the talk of 19th century hate monger bigot. But to tell this story, there was no room for the timid. Jamie Fox gave an academy award winning portrayal of a beaten but not down slave who has the chance to take the man down and get what everyman deserves. A hot wife and freedom. That's the American way we all strive for but some had a tough time getting there. The most interesting thing about this screenplay is how things aren't always what you would expect. The biggest kick in this film for me was Samuel L Jacksons character. He plays a slave/houseman who really catches you off guard. Exploring Samuel's character the way Taratino does show his chops and why he can put together an epic tale of a terrible time in our nations history and pack it with the top players who don't hold back. This is not a new subject and has been told many times. We all know how this story plays out. But there are some big twists that will separate this from many other movies. Of course there is plenty of over the top violence (remember Pulp Fiction), even a bit of humor to ease the pain of such a depraved and violent lifestyle. The hilarious cameo by Jona Hill shows how much fun you can have under the sheets when your a not so bright hater! You will have to see the movie to see how that goes down. Lots of solid acting and intense action keeps this well trodden story of slavery in the old south rolling along in a fast paced hate fest. The only complaint I have is not directed towards this particular movie but to tinsel town. Why does Mississippi always have the be the final resting place for the worse idiots in racism? Why can’t it be Alabama, Louisiana or maybe South Carolina? Any of the confederate states would qualify. Come on west coast, spread the hate in Georgia or................... Great Movie. Quentin is back! I hope the academy doesn't overlook this film because of the subject, violence and mayhem. I give this crazy, period piece of celluloid 8 out of 10 picks!

Zero Dark Thirty is a movie I had to go see. It is the true story of the American servicemen, government employees and patriots that take down the most hated man in modern times since Hitler, Binladin. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by Mark Boal. Its rated R and has a running time of 2h 37m. Its stars Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt, Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Ehle and many other fine actors. Having been effected so deeply by 9/11 as all of us here in the USA and around the world I wanted to see this monster brought to justice, dead or alive! I'm sure everybody knows the outcome of our mission to capture the 21st century madmen. How the mission was carried out is where this story becomes so intriguing. I have to admit, although I wanted the crazy bastard caught and killed, I had kind of not keep this first in my mind the way I should have. Time will ease some pain but it will never let you forget such a tragedy. Thank god the main character in this true story didn't put this situation on the back burner. The most interesting twist in this story is that it took a young woman's determination, relentless foresight to pull the trigger on the shot that was truly heard around the world. Jessica Chastain plays a young female CIA operative that is thrown into the

wolfs den where the men’s club rules this subversive old school interrogation and torture tactics that have become a bit out dated. The US government employees who have been in the middle east looking for there target have been bogged down by red tape, too much time passing by and the consciences that maybe we may never find Binladen. At first, you think the newbie CIA agent is over her head and doesn't have the stomach for this job. But slowly and surely she continues to bring new ideas and methods that are met with disdain from the current powers to be. I really enjoyed Klye Chandlers character who heads up the CIA office and has become a bit complacent and doesn't push forward and finally moves on leaving Chastains character to do the dirty work. Her methods takes years to come to fruition but she stays steady in her conviction and with the help of Navy Seals and a crew that sticks it out with her reach their target and execute a successful midnight attack that finally puts a end to Al Qaeda #1. What I enjoyed about this part of the movie is that there was plenty of doubt that we had found his compound. She had to convince many doubtful fellow CIA operatives, military leaders and politicians and our current head of state. Since this mission was carried out under the leadership of two very different presidents, there is different ideas on how to handle the situation. This movie doesn't shy away from how the two leaders have different ideas on how to bring these terrorist to justice. The only problem I could see with this true story of heroism was the pace of the film seemed to drag a bit. They seemed to focus too much on what was going wrong with the operation and I felt like I was getting dragged down with all the red tape, too many cooks in the kitchen and too much hesitation to give the go ahead to our heroes of the Navy Seals and other military branches government employees. Best thing about this movie is that its based on a true story and this story has a, dare I say, a happy ending. I will give this film 7 out of 10 picks.

Last on this months column is one of my all time favorite movies I have watched more than I would like to admit. I reviewed one of my all time favs and got a bunch of good feedback. So here we go. Let me dust off my well worn dvd (I still have the VHS at least it's not a Beta!) of the classic film Body Heat. Written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan and stars William Hurt, Kathleen Turner, Richard Crenna and a young Ted Danson. This noirs's, steamy film is set in the modern (1981 modern ) times South but has a 1940's style story of good and evil and the woman that will take you to both. Speaking of young actors, Kathleen Turners character is a fem fatal that leaves no trail of dirty deeds done in the dark. Dirty deeds d...... sounds like a great name for my next album. I will have this copyrighted by the time you read this, ha ha. Ned Racine, played by Hurt is lead by his, uh, hand down the path of deceit, lies, sex and just plain stupid actions that puts the "heat" on him. Of course its hard to ignore the young, beautiful siren's call from Turners. Hurt gets duped into a murder plot and things don't go smoothly. Both William Hurt and Ted Danson are lawyers in a small southern town during a string summer heat wave. I always get a chuckle when most movies set in the south shows everybody sweating and having to always hit the local diner or bar to wet your whistle while your sit by a fan (with the little streamers blowing in the w...). Most people in the south have had air conditioning since it's conception. I guess that looks good on screen. I do like how they play Danson's fellow lawyer buddy who figures out what our poor southern lawyer who can’t keep from sweating and keep away from Richard Crenna's wife. When the s... hits the fan our sweaty sinning couple plans to live together but sometimes things don't go how you plan, this movie keeps a brisk pace and keeps you guessing what the outcome will be. That's how your supposed to tell a story! Do yourself a favor and get a copy, watch it in August and maybe turn off your air conditioner. I give this classic 8 out of 10 picks.

Well, that's it for this month. Keep sending all your emails and comments to [email protected] . I saw soo many films this past month I'm going to review a couple in the following months. First up will be the December release of Texas Chainsaw. That is a great addition to the T.C.M legacy.

See you in the top row.... Don't forget to support your local theaters, just remember to turn your

phone off when you sit down in your local theater and never get caught sneaking in candy!!

Some are in wheel chairs, many are dead, none of my articles

have they read, but my thoughts always return to them.

Well girls its your turn to be first in the article, (or report on the 40's) and you don't have to wade thru the “car stuff” as Pineapple calls it when she is in a hurry.

You remember Rosemary from last month? In case you don't she was a couple of years older than me, and worked at “Ma Bell” in Salem (Oregon that is) long honey blonde hair to the middle of her back.

Its 1948 and I'm at the “Bligh Billiards”, a restaurant in front and a huge (for Salem) pool hall and rummy room in the rear. So, one day in walks in Phil “Soft Hearted” Sims. He is a former marine with the 1st Div. Guadalcanal, two purple hearts. He is drunk as always. He never stopped drinking till end of 1948 when he want broke and started in on gasoline mixed with milk!! It killed him real quick! (and painful)

So Phil looks at me and says “I'm headed for the coast to spend the weekend, know anyone who wants to go with gas money? Gas was 29 cents a gallon and I said “sure”, have a beer on me” and I'll make a couple of phone calls”.

In Oregon it was called the “Coast” not the beach, and you could drive down on it in those days.

So I called Rosemary and told her to get another couple, and a girl for “Soft Hearted” Simms. His car was a 1936 Ford 2 dr sedan and was in real good condition.

She called back in an hour or so and said “I had to get two couples, cause Pauline said Phil (Soft Hearted) wouldn't last and she would handle both of them!

We gassed up at the bottom of the bridge to West Salem, and its 55 miles to the coast. We are passing the bottle around and following with 7 up chaser. We hit the coast hi way in an hour and start the winding road on the cliffs above the ocean which is about 200 ft. down from the hi way!

You guessed it! Phil missed a curve and over the bank we went! There was one lousy tree on the bank about 20 feet down and we hit it! Lucky for us it was the bottom side of the car that caught the tree, for the top of the Fords were cloth fiber and wooden bows, that the tree would have come right on thru.

We were packed in so tight, no one was hurt, and we got the passenger door on the right side open and crawled back up the bank.

To make a long story short, Rosemary and I caught a Gray Hound back to Salem, she had the phone co. job for Monday A.M. The rest of them stayed over & got Phil's car running again, but dented pretty bad on the front end and the driver's side.

Rosemary and I left the bus station, walked over to “High” St. and picked up my car (1934 Ford). She put her head on my shoulder and I said “Pine Tree Inn”? She snuggled in and said “no lets go to my place, and I won't have to go home to change and get ready for work”.

She had a cute bdm apt. the bed pulled out of the wall, but was a good one! She had those Hazel eyes, and I can see them now, laughing at me. Her favorite song was “I'll be with you always come rain or come shine”. If around, she would be pushing 90 now. I'll always remember those Hi Heels, Hose with the seam in the back, and those eyes laughing at me!

OK car guys its 1948, Salem is the Capital of Oregon, and has a one mile dirt track for horses at the fairgrounds. So the Calif. Roadster Assoc. (became CRA) scheduled a race in Sept., during “State Fair Week”, my pal Roy Holbrook and I went out to see it!

Roy became a very well known big block Chrysler mechanic for the drag boats. He took care of 3 engines built by Keith Black the Chrysler Hemi genius. I never did find out the name of the guy he worked for, anybody out there know about drag boats? Sure would like to find a photo of Roy & his boats. His wife's name was Luanna.

Anyway, out we go to watch the roadsters on the dirt! You rat rod lovers, and 32 Hi Boy cruisers, would have loved this action!

My buddy Ran Van Dorn built this Hi Boy for our pal Miles Tebourg. Miles was 6' 180 lbs. got cancer, died 1984. Came to San Diego to see us and weight 124, died 2 months later.

Most of the racers were driving 1930,1,2 , and some 33 & 34 roadsters. The track announcer was telling the story of the “new” “stroker” engine that Jack McGarath and Manny Ayulo were running. They were great pals and both did their own mechanical work, chassis and engines.

Jack participated in 68 AAA Championship Races, won 9 poles, gained the lead in 19 of them and won 4 of them. In 1955 he and Manny were at the Indy 500. Both acted as their own Chief Mechanics.

During practice 1955 at Indy

500, Manny Ayulo was killed when he got into the wall, died at the hospital same day. When they pulled him from the car he hadn't fastened his seat belt, and his pockets were full of wrenches!

Later, during the 1955 race, for the first 50 laps Jack McGrath was racing neck & neck for the lead with Bill Vukovitch but his magneto failed on lap 51. The story goes that a pin in the steering assembly broke in Vukies car on lap 54 and he

crashed and died. Mannys dad was former Ambassador to USA from Peru. Manny was born in Burbank Calif. and a true American Hot Rodder same as Jack McGrath starting with the 32 Hi Boys.

Sad end to McGrath, he decided to quit dirt racing when he entered the Phoenix 100 lap race on Nov. 6th 1955. That mile at the sate fairgrounds is still there, and has quite a list of dead drivers. McGrath is one of them.

It's been raining and cold! I sure miss Hawaii. Did I ever mention that they have been recording temperatures in Hawaii for over 100 years? Well the coldest ever recorded was 59 degrees.!

Since I mentioned Hawaii I'd like to tell you a little more about the famous beach boys of Hawaii. (I'll try to keep it short “Jimbo”.)

The beachboys could look at the ocean and determine when to go with the nets and when to go diving. They could look at the water and determine what the surf was going to be like the next day. The beachboys knew the tides, the winds, the currents. They could read the weather. They knew the different types of limu (“seaweed”) and where to find them, and names of the different kinds of fish and the various techniques for catching them. Some fish were attracted to smells and could be lured by throwing chewed coconut or crabmeat out on the water. Other fish were sensitive to sound and could be attracted by knocking together underwater two spears or a pair of rocks. Beas, Bobby, and Mike from the VFW (BSL) you guys might find this interesting, also George from Harold & Lillian's. More next month!

Back to Mississippi: It's Wednesday and Larry left early to talk to Gordon of Good To Go

on Hwy 603, Bay St. Louis (see his ad). He was later going to Sammy's Garage on Old Spanish Trail and check out his “Heartthrob” a 1940 Ford 2 door sedan that he and his buddy Bob Henry are buying from Sammy. So, he will be gone all day.

So, I decided to have my favorite Hawaiian breakfast. Spam, Rice, Eggs! Surprise! Surprise!

I decided to wait till after 12 noon to leave. I jump into Precious (90 300zx) turn on my Beach Boy Tape and go deliver some magazines to Ken & Sues on Lower Bay Rd. and then head for Sam's VFW in Lakeshore. (see his ad) Sam is at the VFW everyday at 12 noon to let the bartender in. Sam had the usual great food on Christmas day.

Since I have lots of time I decided to go to my favorite little Market “Save-A-Lot” on Hwy 90 next to Auto Zone. Lots of people do not like it because you have to bag your own groceries but, they have great prices! I love it because they have no line.

I then go to Walmart (we love you Walmart since Katrina) and get what Save-A-Lot does not carry. Can you believe we have two more markets “Fooglies at Dunbar and 90 in downtown Bay St. Louis and Claiborne Hill Super Market in Waveland.

Let me tell you about “J's” Restaurant in the same parking lot as Save-A-Lot. As I walked in I was surprised how big it was. About 6 big booths on each side and plenty of tables in center. Big see thru kitchen in back. I talked to the manager Vickie. She said she is the owners Mom. Her daughter Cyndi and her husband Richie Santiago own the place.

They have had the restaurant for about 21 years. They went thru Katrina. The menu looked good. I did not have time to eat but I noticed they

have WRAPS, you choose turkey, ham, chicken or tuna and all are dressed with cheddar, mozzarella cheese, too much to mention. I was surprised but they have bottled beer and two draft beers, Southern Peacan and Bud Light.

In same center they have Total Health Solutions (free Medical Clinic), Kitchen & Bath, and Ever After Formals. I did go in Ever After Formals. I was surprised they have a big selection of formals on the floor for any occasion. They have Custom Designs-In house Alterations. Check them out girls. They did say they need girls to be in a show Feb. 24. Any body want to be a star?

Since it was early I decided to go check out this new bar on Blaize Ave/ Train Depot District. It was called “The Bar” now it is “The Zoo”. It is next to Benigos Bar. The new owner was seated at the bar and the bartender I knew! She worked at Sellier's II, Lakeshore, MS. (Sellier's Il is now closed) The owner said he had only been open a couple of weeks. At this time only beer, (liquor soon). They have changed it a lot. As you walk in there is a long bar on the left. Big Karaoke stage in the back, two pool tables. I liked it because as you walk in they have a great fish tank! More info on “The Zoo” next month.

It's getting late and I need to get home (Larry should be home) get dressed take Larry with me in “Precious” and head over to my Favorite Mexican Restaurant El Maguy's. (see their ad) Juan the owner has his famous special on Wednesdays, Dinner Combo Specials 2 for 1. It's from 5 p.m Till! They have a white cheese sauce to die for.

It's Thursday and time to drive to the Kiln. First stop Pop's Restaurant & Bar to drop off magazines. (It used to be Red's Pub) I then head on to see Diane owner of Dempsey's (see her ad) and the Da Swamp Shack. I dropped off more magazine had a glass of wine and went next door to her gift shop. In the front of her Da Swamp Shack Diane has Lawn Décor, inside T-Shirts, Gifts, Barware, and Great Jewelry. I'm headed home and since it is after 2 p.m. I decided to stop at CC'S Bar and say hi to Rene~ the bartender and drop off some magazines. If you need one they are always at Dempseys.

It's Monday and the VFW in Bay St. Louis, is open at 5 p.m. because of the big game. (see their ad) Larry and I walked in about 5 p.m. and Bobby is working the bar all by himself. Star, Mike, Lacey no where insight! Bobby was looking kind of stunned. But he was doing a good job! He was serving beer, stocking, and even found time to have one for himself. He then put out hot dogs and chili. He was not to sure how serve them so he put the hot dogs in the chili! What a guy! He even made time to talk to the customers! He was even starting to look kind of cute. Superman Who!

Dave Stuckey's Lil' Coffin Lil' Coffin is a 1932 Ford Sedan built by Dave Stuckey of

Wichita, Kansas. Dave bought the car in 1954 from Warren Wilhelm's dad who owned a car lot on South Broadway in Wichita, Kansas. The car had perfect body and fenders. The first night Dave owned the car he removed the motor, trans-mission, fenders, hood and grille so that he could channel it. He then took it to General Welding, the company where he worked after school, and channeled it 9 inches. At the same time Dave also welded in a straight front cross-member, mounts for the radiator, split the wishbones, mounted a flat-head motor and put hydraulic brakes on the car. While build-ing the car, Dave began working part time after school for Darryl Starbird at his Star Kustom Shop. The first version of the car with a sectioned '32 grille shell was finished in 1956.

Over the years, Dave continuously made changes to the car in some way or another. In 1958 Dave put a 1940 Ford dashboard in the car and built the rear fenders, which were built completely with rods as the under-structure and tubing to form the wheel wells. This structure was then cov-ered with formed sheet metal which was brazed to the outer tubes. A grille was molded into the rear end and fit with special nerf bars. A couple of front pans from a 1953 Studebaker were used to form the lower rear-end of the body. Dave used 1930 Ford Model A front fenders and formed the running boards from sheet metal. Bill Tumbelston helped Dave form the front nerf bar using a 1958 Edsel grille shell as form. The nerf bar held the headlights which were 1959 Harley Davidson units. Exhaust pipes were incorpo-rated into the fenders and running boards. Once completed, Dave painted the car with a Titian red 1956 Buick color. Dave left out the black while mixing the color, and replaced this by 246-0887-H. The color was shot over a yellow tint mixing lacquer. Frank Turner did all the interior work on the '32. The car was upholstered in red and white Matlasha fabric imported from Belgium with silver threads sewn into it. The dash was filled and reworked for Stewart-Warner instruments. The doors were opened via solenoid system. The car had several different engines during its first years. In Car Craft November 1960 the car is featured with its original grille and a 1954 DeSoto engine. The car was bored 3 13/16, equipped with larger valves, Isky camshaft, J. E. Pistons, Grant rings, reworked heads with 11 1/2: 1 compression ratio, Crower Manifold, four Stromberg 97 's, Mercury clutch and 1939 Ford transmission and rear end.

A new grill shell similar to the Ala Kart was built with the help of Roger Hatchett, who also worked at Star Kustom Shop. The shell was restyled with chromed bullets. King George, a pinstriper from Lawrence, Kansas pinstriped the car.

The name "Lil' Coffin" came from a girl in Dodge City, Kansas that thought the car looked like a little coffin because of the interior.

After Dave opened his own shop in 1960, he began to rework the Lil' Coffin. He sectioned the car 4 inches, reworked the top to make it cantile-vered, and cut off the front fenders to move them forward. He made a new grill sporting a tubular arrangement, changed the rear grill to match the one in front, moved the motor back and installed six carbs on the motor. The firewall and dashboard were changed, the doors were turned around, the interior changed and four bucket seats were installed. The car also got a handgrip steering wheel. Dave was running out of money at the time, and decided to sell the car to his good friend Larry Farber. They agreed

that Dave would finish the car so Larry could show it. Larry was going to take it to California where George Barris had lined up shows for him. Dave changed the front seat to a bench seat, put a tonneau cover over the rear seat, and had Frank Turner re-do the upholstery. White Naugahyde covered the seats, while the carpeting was gold. Dave painted the car candy wild cherry. Larry took the car to California and showed it there at various shows such as the 1962 National Roadster Show.

People from Monogram saw the car at the National Roadster Show. Jack Besser the president of Monogram decided that they just had to have the car. They contacted Larry, and a deal to sell it to Monogram was made. After showing the car for a while, the paint had been damaged and Monogram sent it to

Star Kustom Shop for a new paint job. Dave Puhl who was working for Darryl Starbird at the time painted the car. Monogram had bought the car to make a model of it, didn't want anything on the car to be changed, only a new paint job and a touch up.

The Lil’ Coffin after coming back from General Welding where Dave channeled the car 9 inches
