Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane

By: Jimbo People say as we get older time seems to slip by faster. So… as I reminisce about my ’glory days’ and all the seemingly important things

that took place in my life… like becoming a teenager, (took a lot longer than thirteen years) and waiting till I turned sixteen so I could legally drive which took forever. Then it was time to leave home and see the world, thanks to the U.S. Navy…. next came marriage, children, lot’s of bills and the responsibilities to meet them all.

My past is filled with the memories of decisions I made and not all of them were good ones. For me this time of year is like a ‘time out’... sort of a break in the action of life and I like to think most of us fill our days with thinking of others. It’s the holiday season and giving fills our hearts...

We are once again at the last month of the year, December. A month that is full of emotions, most of them thinking about Christmas and what we can give, or afford to give, and for some what they will get.

To me it’s a mixed bag. I love all the Christmas spirit, from decorating the house to the shopping not to mention the family and friends gathering together. I also know there is the side that Ebenezer Scrooge discovered; the reality that for some, Christmas may be one of the hardest times of the year. It’s hard to keep your spirits up when you feel you can’t participate in the way you would like to.

There is a way for all of us to remember what the true spirit of Christmas feels like. All we have to do is think back to a time when we were told our first Christmas stories. And in this months magazine are a few of mine, starting off with;

People say I'm an innkeeper. I suppose you'd call it an inn. To us it's just a big house. My grandfather, Joshua ben-Yahoudi, built it back when his trading business was at a peak. And he built it big enough to fit all fourteen kids.

Well, a few years ago, the missus and I were just rattling around in that big house--kids grown up and all--and we were thinking, maybe we could take in a few travelers. Rachel has always been mighty good in the kitchen, so we just let out word that we'd take people in, and they started to come. Every night we'd have a person or two, sometimes more. People would always come back when they came to town again, intent on another bowl of Rachel's lamb stew.

Then came that blankety-blank census the governor thought up. Taxation, pure and simple! People from all over the province flooded into town that week. Filled us clean up. Rachel and I slept in the main room where we always do, and we started putting guests in the other three rooms. They kept coming. Then we doubled up two or three families to a room. They kept coming. Finally, when we had filled the main room with four families plus Rachel and me, we started turning people away.

I must have gotten in and out of bed ten times that night, stumbling over bodies to get to the door. "No more room, sorry folks. No more room. Come back in the morning. We have a couple of families leaving then." They'd mutter something and head back to their party, and sleep somewhere next to a house under the shelter of a blanket. I just couldn't make any more room. That's the honest truth.

But I did make room for one more couple. Joseph was a burly man with big arms and strong hands, down from Nazareth, I think he said. He wouldn't take "no" for an answer. I would say, "No, I'm sorry," and he'd tell me about his "little Mary." Well, when I saw "little Mary" she wasn't very little. She was just about as pregnant as a woman can get, and awfully pale. While Joseph was pleading, I saw her grab her tummy in pain, and I knew I couldn't let her have that baby outside in the wind and sleet.

The barn. That would just have to do, I told myself, and led them and their donkey out back. Now it was pretty crowded, so I shooed several animals into the pen outside to make room in one dry corner. Joseph said, "We sure are grateful, sir." Then with a serious look, he asked me, "Do you know where I can find a midwife in these parts? We might need her tomorrow or the next day."

That man didn't know much about having babies, it was plain enough to see. I ran to Aunt Sarah's house and pounded on the door until her husband came. "One of the travelers is having a baby," I told him. "I'll wait while Aunt Sarah gets dressed." I stopped a moment to catch my breath. "And tell her to hurry."

By the time we got back to the barn, Joseph had "little Mary" settled on some soft, clean hay, wrapped up in a blanket, wiping the perspiration off her brow, and was speaking softly to her as she fought the waves of pain. Aunt Sarah sent me to get my Rachel, and then pushed Joseph and me out of the barn. "This ain't no place for men," she said.

We waited just outside in the shelter of the barn for hours, it seemed like. Well, all of a sudden, we hear a little cry. "You've got a baby boy," Aunt Sarah was saying as we peeped around the corner. She hands the young-un to Rachel, and she wraps it up in those swaddling bands she had saved. Cute little thing, I tell you.

Well, Joseph goes over to Mary and gives her a big hug, and a kiss on the cheek, and Rachel hands Mary the baby, and then comes over to me and takes my hand. "Remember when our Joshua was born?" she whispers.

The lantern was blowing almost out, the cattle were lowing softly, and baby Jesus was asleep in his mother's arms. That's how I left them as I walked Aunt Sarah home. Chilly wind, though the sleet had stopped.

By the time I got back, Rachel was in bed, and I was about ready to put out the light, step over sleeping bodies, and get under the warm covers, when I heard some murmuring out by the barn.

I'd better check, I told myself. When I peeped in, I saw shepherds. Raggedy, smelly old shepherds were kneeling down on the filthy barn floor as if they were praying. The oldest one was saying something to Joseph about angels and the Messiah. And the rest of them just knelt there with their heads bowed, some with tears running down their faces.

I coughed out loud, and Joseph looked up. I was almost ready to run

those thieving shepherds off, when Joseph motioned to me with his hand. "It's okay," he whispered. "They've come to see the Christ-baby."

The Christ-baby? The Messiah? That was when I knelt, too. And watched, and prayed, and listened to the old shepherd recount his story of angels and heavenly glory, and the sign of a holy baby, wrapped in swaddling bands, to be found in a stable-manger.

My Lord, it was my stable where the Christ-baby was born. My manger he rested in. My straw, my lamp, my wife Rachel assisting at his birth.

The shepherds left after a while. Some of them leaned over and kissed the sleeping Christ-child before they departed. I know I did.

I'll always be glad I made room in the barn for that family-- that holy family. You see, I'm not some mean inn-keeper. I was there. I saw him. And, you know, years later that boy came back to Bethlehem, this time telling about the Kingdom of God. Oh, I believe in him, I tell you. I was there. And, mark my words, if you'd seen what I've seen, you'd be a believer, too.

Now that’s an interesting way of telling the Christmas story…. Here is

another story that makes you want to make Christmas special for someone..

I remember my first Christmas party with Grandma. I was just a kid. I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," she jeered. "Even dummies know that!" My grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told

the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her world-famous cinnamon buns. Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites I told her everything. She was ready for me.

“No Santa Claus!" she snorted. "Ridiculous! Don't believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad. Now, put on your coat, and let's go."

"Go? Go where, Grandma?" I asked. I hadn't even finished my second cinnamon bun.

"Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. That was a bundle in those days.

'Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car." Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's.

I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for. I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church. I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobbie Decker.

He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock's grade-two class.

Bobbie Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobbie Decker didn't have a cough, and he didn't have a coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobbie Decker a coat. I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that.

"Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down.

"Yes, "I replied shyly. "It's ... for Bobbie." The nice lady smiled at me. I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.

That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper


Just got back from the Emerald Coast show on Nov. 9th. Had a great time and had some good food. First I want to thank Dennis, Bill and Speck for their help. I didn’t have any taillights on my truck

Friday night. So with a lot of help from them I left the show Saturday with lights. I was signing up new members for Coast Cruizers car club, MotorSport Magazine and selling shirts so I didn't get to help much. You want these 3 guys around if you have trouble.

Back to the food. Jimbo and I ate at Jenny’s on Friday morning and then Sharon and I went back on Saturday and Sunday. I did an article last year on Jenny’s. (Jenny was out sick when we were there. I hope she gets better)

Now if you want a pancake this is the place to go. You can get 1 or 2 or 3, but you better be hungry. The pancake completely covers a 10” plate. You can get that by it self or up to 3 eggs, with meat, grits or hash browns and toast.

This is the local hang out for people in Panama City Beach. The place has great food.

Then on Friday night we went to Carrabba’s. Just wish we had one here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the closest one is in Mobile. They have the best Italian food around for a chain restaurant. The others don’t even come close.

If thing work out ok we will be going on a dinner cruise to the Iron Skillet in Vancleave, MS on the 22nd of November. I will write about it next time.

One thing I’ve learned, with time, women gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room, it distributes out to the rest of our bodies. So we aren't heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy.

Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, “Good grief, look how smart I am!”

I called my doctor's office. “Is it true, that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life?”

“Yes, I'm afraid so,” the doctor told me. After a moment of silence I said, “I'm wondering, just how serious is

my condition because this prescription is marked 'NO REFILLS'.”

and ribbons, and write, "To Bobbie, From Santa Claus" on it -- Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy. Then she drove me over to Bobbie Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially one of Santa's helpers. Grandma parked down the street from Bobbie's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk.

Then Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus", she whispered, "get going." I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his doorbell and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma.

Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobbie.

Forty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my grandma, in Bobbie Decker's bushes. That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were: ridiculous. Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team.

So here’s to all of you on Santa’s team may your thoughts during the Christmas holidays be filled with the spirit of the Shepherds from the manger while enjoying the happy moments you bring to those with whom you share.

My friend John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to 'clean up' the bird's vocabulary. Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed.

Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute. Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior."

John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird spoke-up, very softly, "May I ask what the turkey did?"

I went to visit my son, Anthony, for dinner. He lives with a female roommate, Maria.

During the course of the meal, I couldn't help but notice how pretty Anthony's roommate is, and over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, I started to wonder if there was more between Anthony and his roommate than met the eye.

Reading my thoughts, Anthony volunteered, "I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, Maria and I are just roommates.''

It was a week later that Anthony called me to say, Maria came to him saying, "Ever since your mother came to dinner, she was unable to find the silver sugar bowl. He wondered if I took it?"

“Now I'm not saying that you "did" take the sugar bowl from my house; I'm not saying that you "did not" take it. But the fact remains that it has been missing ever since you were here for dinner.”

I just said son, “I'm not saying that you "do" sleep with Maria, and I'm


Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from my family, 17 FOREVER and The Hot Rod Show. I am a Christian. I say Merry Christmas and I don’t apologize for it. I am just about over all the political correctness that we all deal with on a daily basis. I draw the line at Christmas. I think I have a right being a Christian to say Merry Christmas…so that is what I will say. If you want to be politically correct, then allow me my religious freedom to say Merry Christmas. Wait that is getting into a whole different area and argument. As this last month of the year winds down, we start thinking about the year we’ve had

and how thankful we are for our lives, our blessings, our family, our church and our friends. With all that…we start thinking and dreaming about the coming year. The excitement and anticipation of what the New Year will bring. I stopped making New Year’s resolutions a long time ago, because I never kept them, so why bother? The other thing that is happening…is the fact that we’re not getting any younger. I figured that out today… I was the oldest that I have ever been today and the youngest I’ll ever be! Don’t get me wrong it beats the alternative and I’m thankful for each and every day, but getting old sucks! During my checkup last month, the doctor tells me either I start exercising or he’s going to keep increasing my meds until he has to put me on injections. (I’m a borderline diabetic and I hate needles) The doctor got my attention. So now I’m exercising every other day. Treadmill, stair-stepper, stationary bike and assorted weightlifting machines. Did I mention I hate exercising…I had rather sit on the sofa, watch TV and eat Twinkies. Did I mention I hate exercising? I have to admit, besides being sore all the time…I do feel better, much better! What does the commercial say… “a body in motion tends to stay in motion, while a body at rest tends to stay at rest.” I do have a lot of energy now. My wife says maybe that is not a good thing. But I did get a promotion at work, so maybe it’s all working. Then it happened…sever pain about 10 o’clock at night. I’m talking really bad pain all the way around my abdomen at the navel about the height of a weight belt all the way around my body. So I grab the heating pad and it helped, but if I had it on my stomach, my back was still hurting, if I had it on my back, my stomach was hurting. So that didn’t work. So next I try hot tub baths, about one an hour. The first three hot baths work pretty well, the fourth and fifth not so much. It’s 5 am and I’m thinking I have to make it until the doctor’s office opens at 8 am because I’m not going to the E. R.! Then it hit me…the doctor’s office opens at 8, but the doctors don’t get there until 10…let’s see! Oh no that is five more hours…no frigging way I can take this pain another five hours… whatever it is. I wake Scotty up and tell her it is time to go. We get to Memorial Hospital ER in Gulfport, they take one look at me and take me right back into a little room for the patient information. I guess I should have flopped around on the floor, they will get you right back to a room. They did keep the paperwork kind of short, started an IV, drawing blood and all the other things that do to check you out. Finally the doctor comes in to see me. He checks me out, mashes around on me asking if this hurts and that hurts, finally I said doctor I’m hurting pretty bad. He asked on a scale of 1-10 how bad is it? I said 13. He said I’ll be right back. He came back with a shot of Laudanum and something else and put it straight into the IV. Warmth and pain relief quickly flooded my body…at that point I was fine and they could do pretty much anything they wanted to me after that. I loved everybody, lol. The doctor came back in and said they were doing a C.A.T. Scan on my stomach and back area to see what was going on in there. I said fine whatever…I was feeling pretty good about then. After the C.A.T. Scan, the doctor came in and said “you have a kidney stone.” So I asked if he was going to blow it up, nuke it. He laughed and said oh no it’s very small. I told him it couldn’t be that small and hurt that bad. The doctor said the size of the stone had little to do with the size of the pain. The doctor went on to say if a stone is small enough to pass, they did not blow them up, because he said, you see how much pain even a small kidney stone causes and you have one… if you blow it up you end up with a lot of tiny ones. I said oh no…one is enough. I finally passed it and got to feeling back to normal. I had no idea about kidney stones or what they felt like. A nurse told me she had had a kidney stone and had a baby, she said she would take the baby any day. So now if you have a similar pain, maybe this will help you deal with it. The one thing I learned is that I went through about eight hours of pain that I shouldn’t have gone through if I had went on to the E. R. at 10 pm instead of waiting until 5 am. That was needless agony for no good reason. Getting old is bad, but I think life is kind of backwards. Wouldn’t it be better to start out life old and gradually get younger? Can you imagine what you could do at 60 with the experience we have and the body of a 20 year old. Well that might get us all in trouble. But what a way to die at the end of life. Spank me doctor and send me home! The end of the car show season allows us to start our inside garage projects for the winter. Mine is piddling with the Hot Rod Show trailer and seeing how I can improve the music show I do at car shows. The Hot Rod Show trailer stays inside unless it’s on the road or at a car show. Just like a show car, keeping the trailer locked up inside really helps keep it in nice shape. My thoughts for this winter…how can I get better quality music out of my three sound systems, how I can improve the look of the trailer and how can I organize things inside the Hot Rod Show trailer a little better, what can I fine tune? It’s also a time for me to be working in the studio with ideas I have on the bits that go in between the songs. Adding to my 50’s, 60’s and 70’s library of music. I also have to go through the trailer, clean and service the things that need taking care of and daydream about the 2015 road trips. I love to travel and love doing the car shows. But I don’t want to do too many car shows where it becomes a job. I have one of those. Plus that allows me to be choosey about which car shows I do. I’m sure you can relate to the garage winter projects, time for you to do things to your Hot Rod that need doing, you have been wanting to do, or things you’ve been putting off that really need doing. The car show season may be done for 2014, but you can always piddle with your Hot Rod and maybe occasionally get that Hot Rod out of the garage and enjoy that 17 FOREVER Hot Rod state of mind!

Oh Merry Christmas and Happy New Year y’all and I’m not apologizing!

WAKE UP America ! ! ! At what point do we stop giving away OUR

RIGHTS ? We've gone so far the other way . . bent over backwards not to offend anyone.

Some people, it seems, get offended way too easily. I mean, isn't that what all this prayer hullabaloo is all about -- people getting offended?

Those of us in the majority are always tippy-toeing around, trying to make sure we don't

step on the toes or hurt the feelings of the humorless. And you can bet there's a lawyer standing on every corner making sure we don't. Take this prayer deal. It's absolutely ridiculous. Some atheist goes to a high school football

game, hears a kid say a short prayer before the Game and gets offended. So, he hires a

lawyer and goes to court and asks Somebody to pay him a whole bunch of money for all the damage done to him. You would have thought the kid kicked him in the crotch. Damaged for life by a 30-second prayer? Am I missing something here?

I don't believe in Santa Claus, but I'm not going to sue somebody for singing a Ho-Ho-Ho song in December. I don't agree with Darwin, but I didn't go out and hire a lawyer when my high school teacher taught his theory of evolution. Life, liberty or your pursuit of happiness will not be endangered because someone says a 30-second prayer before a football game.

So, what's the big deal? It's not like somebody is up there reading the entire book of Acts. They're just talking to a God they believe in and asking him to grant safety to the players on the field and the fans going home from the game. "But it's a Christian prayer," some will argue. Yes, and this is the United States of America, a country founded on Christian principles. And we are in the Bible Belt. According to our very own phone book, Christian churches outnumber all others better than 200-to-1. So what would you expect -- somebody chanting Hare Krishna?

If I went to a football game in Jerusalem, I would expect to hear a Jewish prayer. If I went to a soccer game in Baghdad, I would expect to hear a Muslim prayer. If I went to a Ping-Pong match in China, I would expect to hear someone pray to Buddha. And I wouldn't be offended. It wouldn't bother me one bit. When in Rome…

"But what about the atheists?" is another argument. What about them? Nobody is asking them to be baptized. We're not going to pass the collection plate. Just humor us for 30 seconds. If that's asking too much, bring a Walkman or a pair of ear plugs. Go to the bathroom. Visit the concession stand. .. Call your lawyer. Unfortunately, one or two will make that call.

One or two will tell thousands what they can and cannot do. I don't think a short prayer at a football game is going to shake the world's foundations. Nor do I believe that not praying will result in more serious injuries on the field or more fatal car crashes after the game. In fact, I'm not so sure God would even be at all these games if he didn't have to be. That's just one of the downsides of omnipresence.

Christians are just sick and tired of turning the other cheek while our courts strip us of all our rights. Our parents and grandparents taught us to pray before eating and pray before we go to sleep. Our Bible tells us just to pray without ceasing. Now a handful of people and their lawyers are telling us to cease praying. God, help us.

We all remember our special times and during the holiday season they seem to be abundant. It is right and correct to reflect on them. As much as I appreciate my newly met car building buddies, I appreciate the old friends too. The ones I grew up with and the places we played and traveled to. The people I have history with…those individuals that are a part of my special memories. I grew up during a wonderful time in the history of the United States. Thank you Tom and Dolly for reminding me of the things I am thankful for. Time is like a river. You cannot touch the water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of life. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and I’m wishing you a Merry Christmas.

When I was a kid on our Blanco ranch, I’d eat every time that I had the chance.

There was food in Abundance, ‘bout everywhere. It wasn’t cleaned at the sink, but I didn’t care.

Blueberries, strawberries grew out in the wild. I ate ‘em all, heck, I was a child.

There were veggies galore, that my mama grew. We had a few fruit trees just out back too.

We had Socks and Brownie, two horses we could ride, Then, of course, my dog Poncho, that was always by my side.

Used to swim in the creek with its water cold as ice. But on a real hot Texas day, it sure felt mighty nice.

Went to town on Saturdays, to the local picture show. Near as I can recall, it cost a dime or so.

Then on Sunday morning, we’d hear the pastor preach. He loved to talk of Proverbs and the lessons they would teach.

Sometimes, down in Blanco, there’d be a big square dance. It was pretty darn excitin’, for a kid on the Blanco ranch.

Times back then were special, in oh so many ways. Deep in the heart of Texas, those were the good ole days.

I’d be back there now if I was young and had the chance, ‘Cause it’s pretty close to heaven,

Emerald Coast Cruizin’ Last month I mentioned how much I

looked forward to the Emerald Coast Cruizin’. Taking time off and away from my computer and the office I get a few days of hanging out with friends that I don’t get a chance to see very often.

This year was awesome. Rakes & Lisa Parish pour their heart and sole into this show. They had a full week of scheduled activities available for Cruizers to choose from. It’s no wonder some of the folks plan their vacations around this show. Some even go a week or two before the show and stay a week after it’s over. (a couple of weeks in Florida staying in a condo at bargain prices is hard to pass up..)

This show has gained size each year. Over two-thousand registered vehicles filled the Aaron Bessant Park. Vendors and spectators took advantage of the Panama City Beach business who welcomed cruizers with off season prices, reasonable law enforcement and restaurants giving incentivizes for your repeat business.

Every night cars were cruising along the beach front. Chairs lined the street side parking lots and hotels hosted impromptu cruise-ins. Hot Rods and Classics cars where everywhere.

A BIG THANK-YOU to the folks in the photo on the right. If you parked in the Hot Rod Alley hospitality area these are some of the people who kept things running smoothly. And yes I had a “Large Time” all week.

Coast Cruizer Rob Cole captured some really great shots with his trusty camera as he and Gulf Coast MotorSports cover girls Candy Cocktail & Rena Mitchell stopped to pose with some of the cars and folks along the way.

Next stop for the Hot Rod Alley hospitality tent will be at the Gulf Coast Auto Show April 3-5. (Sunday April 5th is Easter) Come spend Easter Weekend on the Mississippi Gulf Coast..


Coast Cruizer Michael Warren set up his 1933 Ford coupe race car at the Hot Rod Alley hospitality tent and treated kids big and small to a ride they will forever remember. This 540 cubic inch powered race car is not only a street drivable hot rod but also a simulated driving experience. A large screen monitor is placed in front of the car. Full surround sound inside the car and movement supplied by the airbag suspension gives you the experience of what Michael experienced as he drove 190 on the Bonneville salt flats or a 200 mph pass down the quarter mile at Beach Bend Dragstrip in Bowling Green Ky; maybe just a quick motorcross run, thru some sharp turns. All these were programmed for you to feel the thrill in this race car. All were filmed from the onboard camera and yet this car can be driven on the street. Michael built the car from the ground up and raced this car. It has been featured at many shows and even on Stacey David’s Gearz.

This past May was when I first learned of Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine. I had done some pinup modeling and submitted my photos hoping to be featured in this magazine. The magazine's creator, Jimbo Perkins, whom you are all familiar with, gave me a wonderful opportunity to not just be a cover model in the June issue, but to write for the magazine monthly. I was asked to write a piece about the event that my photos were

from, Reno Rockabilly Riot. Little did I know it would reignite a passion that I had had since I was a child.

I always did well in English and writing, but I had put writing on the back-burner as life got busy and went on as it does. Then through my fortuitous path crossing with the magazine you all enjoy reading, I received the chance to write a monthly article about a variety of topics. I have immensely enjoyed writing for the readers each month. Due to the Emerald Coast Cruizin’ this past month, I was able to meet some of the readers for the first time. To talk with you all and get your feedback while getting to know some of you was such fun! To see the validation of my articles has meant so much to me. I just wanted to let all of you reading this know that I am thrilled to be a part of an exceptional magazine; to write for your enjoyment each month and to entertain some of the new subscribers or readers that may be reading my column for the first time.

Last month I attended the Emerald Coast Cruizin’ in Panama City Beach, Florida. Being a Floridian, I had somehow managed to never hear of this show! And boy was I missing out! As an avid fan of classic cars, I love a car show, but the size of this Cruizin’ is something worth noting. By Saturday afternoon, there were over 2500 vintage beauties lining the long rows of Aaron Bessant Park.

Even better than the car show, was meeting the people! There was a fun crowd of car enthusiasts of all ages. From my booth at the Hot Rod Alley Tent, I gave out copies of the November magazine issue that honored Veterans Day and signed posters for fans. It was great fun to talk to all of you, take photos, make new friends and get to know you all better. I particularly loved handing out my posters to the little kids!

The 10th year of cruizin’ took place from November 3-8, 2014. The annual event is unique in that it is an enormous cruise-in at the beach. I could have literally sat in the pool while I looked out over the glistening ocean across the street and looked down at gorgeous hot rods lining the streets below. That is pretty cool I must say!

Plus Panama City Beach was a wonderful host for the week-long event full of day and night activities. Bursting with great tunes daily, delicious seafood provided by Sharky’s Beachfront Restaurant and Tiki Bar and to top it off, the Roots & Boots concert Saturday night with country stars Aaron Tippin, Darryl Worley and Sammy Kershaw. The Emerald Coast Cruizin’ also included raffles, vendors and a swap meet of new and used parts.

I met visitors from mostly southern states, including Georgia, Mississippi, Florida and Alabama, who came to either see or be one of the thousands of hot rods and classics attending the event. It was the perfect weekend for an outdoor car show. Despite some unusually cold weather for the sunshine state, the weekend for rain free and full of Florida sunlight.

I am looking forward to attending the annual event in 2015. If you could not make it there this year, I hope to see you there next year! Be there or be square ;)

We could write forever about racing and race car drivers, however the cars were all different, no two were a like. They looked the same, on the outside, but many different changes were made on the inside.

Most everyone ran a kill switch on the steering wheel. Owner drivers like myself had a steel band about an inch wide and 2 or 3 inches long and the ignition wire was soldered to it.

This was mounted on a piece of plastic and taped to the steering wheel spoke next to the drivers right thumb. If the throttle hung up, you reached over with your thumb and killed the engine! Being direct in & out drive when you let go it would go back to wide open. I chased my racing friend Allen Heath former midget racing champion, 8 laps in a heat, qualifying race.

I couldn’t believe how fast he was coming out of the corners! I went over to him after the 8 laps in the pits and accused him of doing something illegal in the fuel to go that fast! He laughed, and said “no Larry” the throttle stuck wide open and I’d “kill it in the corners”. His owner was really upset because that’s brutal treatment to give a hi-performance engine!

Speaking of engines I was very lucky to be a friend of Jake Possell, who was a Tesla addict and the most brilliant man I have ever met! If you remember back then you could not buy a electric fuel pump that put out over 6 psi. Today all fuel injected cars are running 28 to 32 psi, so the reason is: More horse power when you drop the fuel below critical droplet size. Now the factory’s can give you a smaller engine, smaller fuel tank with the same H.P. As the “big” engine was. Plus a 10 to 15 mile per gallon over the original!

My 2000 Lincoln Town Car has 4.6 liter engine (about 280 cubic inch) it gets 23 miles per gallon @ 70 mph.

So back to racing, and race cars. Back in the 40’s, after WWII one of my favorite drivers was Jack McGrath.

The photo shows the 3 cars he was racing in at that time. He started with the roadsters, (being a Calif.

native) and was quickly given rides in midgets (far left) dirt champ Indy cars (2nd left) and the roadsters!

He was born in 1919 and died in 1955. Before Gilmore Stadium and the midgets in Los Angeles closed in the late 40’s, Jack was a big money winner and very popular, crowds loved him.

From the Roadsters to the midgets, to the champ dirt cars, and then to the Indy 500. His first entry was in 1948 and he drove Kurtis Kraft chassis all seven years! He started in the 3 car front row six (6) times, and one of those times he had fast time and was on the pole. Major wins were as follows: It was AAA at that time until USAC took over in 1956. Won Syracuse 100 mile race, and also Langhorne 100 mile in 1951. Syracuse 100 and the Milwaukee 200 in 1952. Indy 500 he had fast time, sat on the pole for the start, and led the race the first 44 laps when the

engine gave up. (magneto) He was amazing as a racer, he did all the engine work on all the cars he drove!

The “splendid sprinter” as the news men liked to call him, he made the statement to the press, that this race, Nov. 6 1955 was the last dirt race he was going to run. It was Arizona State Fair grounds, a one mile dirt oval that was also used for horses to race. He broke a rear axle flipped 6 times, and died!

Wild Willie Waldhaber and I used to share an apt in Huntington Park, Calif. We were both driving for Joe Lucy (he was out of Memphis). Willie had the #9 car, (was #5 when I drove it) and I was in the #4 car.

Well, down the street from where we were living (thanks to Joe) was the “Clock Drive-in. I’m talking 1049-1951. In those days Midgets were very popular, Gilmore Stadium had closed and Culver City and Carroll Speedway were the big money that was still left after the closing of Gilmore.

One Wednesday night (no racing) I’m setting in my car at the drive in, having a

burger, fries, and a coke (cost .85 cents) when this

darlin child comes up to my door, (top is down) and says “they say your one of those race car guys”, can you get my car stared for me?

“I can sure try, but let me finish my burger, and why don’t you get in and have something”.

As she walked around the front to get in the other side, I was most impressed. She wasn’t dressed like a car hop, real nice tight white sweater, pleated blue skirt & white boots.

She got in, and said “my name is Riemy” and I really need your help”. I ordered her a coke and finished mine as fast as I could, (and still look nonchalant) because I’m sitting there looking at a pair of 38’s (D Cup) and the legs and face to go with them!

So, I say “where is the car?” She says “just a block down the street at the curb”. I fire up the “46 Ford and out the drive in we go! A 1949 Ford 4 door is setting there, at the curb, where she parked, only a block from the drive-in! I parked behind it, got out, and go up to the car. The keys are in the ignition, I open the door, reach out to the dash, and pull the headlight switch, no lights!

I pop the hood, battery is there (and it comes to me) maybe she left the key on for a few hours. I go back to my car and say “Riemy I’m going to pull the battery and we are going up to “Union 76” station on the corner of Florence & Pacific & get it fast charged! We delivered the battery & left. Riemy and I then went to Romano’s in Compton and got acquainted. Romano’s was a bar lots of racers hung out at.

Johnny Mantz, Chuck Stevenson, Troy Ruttman, Parnelli, to mention a few. So, we sat in the huge parking lot out back and got comfortable. Riemy was quite different than anybody I had known at that time. She loved to lay across my lap, with her feet against the passenger door, and when kissing me, guide my hand under her sweater. I figured a lot of things to do, but she wasn’t for anything else. (at that time)

The battery got charged (in about 2 hours) and so did I, but no way did she change! I got her car started, and said “later”, but she said “wait a minute”, let’s go out after the races this weekend, when I don’t have my dads car, and don’t have to work!

As a joke, my brother used to hang a pair of panty hose over his fireplace before Christmas. He said all he wanted was for Santa to fill them. What they say about Santa checking the list twice must be true because every Christmas morning, although Jay's kids' stockings were overflowed, his poor pantyhose hung sadly empty.

One year I decided to make his dream come true. I put on sunglasses and went in search of an inflatable love doll. They don't sell those things at Walmart. I had to go to an adult bookstore downtown. If You've never been in a X-rated store, don't go. You'll only confuse yourself. I was there an hour saying things like, "What does this do?" "You're kidding me!" "Who would buy that?" Finally, I made it to the inflatable doll section. I wanted to buy a standard, uncomplicated doll that could also substitute as a passenger in my truck so I could use the car pool lane during rush hour. Finding what I wanted was difficult. Love dolls come in many different models. The top of the line, according to the side of the box, could do things I'd only seen in a book on animal husbandry. I settled for "Lovable Louise." She was at the bottom of the price scale. To call Louise a "doll" took a huge leap of imagination.

On Christmas Eve, with the help of an old bicycle pump, Louise came to life. My sister-in-law was in on the plan and let me in during the wee morning hours, long after Santa had come and gone, I filled the dangling pantyhose with Louise's pliant legs and bottom. I also ate some cookies and drank what remained of a glass of milk on a nearby tray. I went home, and giggled for a couple of hours.

The next morning my brother called to say that Santa had been to his house and left a present that had made him VERY happy but had left the dog confused. She would bark, start to walk away, then come back and bark some more. We all agreed that Louise should remain in her panty hose so the rest of the family could admire her when they came over for the traditional Christmas dinner.

My grandmother noticed Louise the moment she walked in the door. "What the hell is that?" she asked. My brother quickly explained, "It's a doll."

"Who would play with something like that?" Granny snapped. I had several candidates in mind, but kept my mouth shut. "Where are her clothes?" Granny continued. "Boy, that turkey sure smells nice, Gran," Jay said, trying to steer her

into the dining room. But Granny was relentless. "Why doesn't she have any teeth?" Again, I could have answered, but

why would I? It was Christmas and no one wanted to ride in the back of the ambulance saying, "Hang on Granny, Hang on!"

My grandfather, a delightful old man with poor eyesight, sidled up to me and said, " Hey, who's the naked gal by the fireplace?"

I told him she was Jay's friend. A few minutes later I noticed Grandpa by the mantel, talking to Louise. Not just talking, but actually flirting. It was then that we realized this might be Grandpa's last Christmas at home.

The dinner went well. We made the usual small talk about who had died, who was dying, and who should be killed, when suddenly Louise made a noise that sounded a lot like my father in the bathroom in the morning. Then she lurched from the panty hose, flew around the room twice, and fell in a heap in front of the sofa.

The cat screamed. I passed cranberry sauce through my nose, and grandpa ran across the room, fell to his knees, and began administering mouth to mouth resuscitation. My brother fell back over his chair and wet his pants and Granny threw down her napkin, stomped out of the room, and sat in the car.

It was indeed a Christmas to treasure and remember. Later in my brother's garage, we conducted a thorough examination to decide the cause of Louise's collapse. We discovered that Louise had suffered from a hot ember to the back of her right thigh. Fortunately, thanks to a wonder drug called duct tape, we restored her to perfect health. Louise went on to star in several bachelor party movies. I think Grandpa still calls her whenever he can get out of the house.

The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for. Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. I love to hear them say "you don't look that old."

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

I was raised in a small ranching town in Texas and knew just about everyone. Earlier this year I saw old Tom, an eighty-year old rancher, in town I made it a point to talk to him.

Tom had lost his wife a year or so before and rumor had it that he was marrying a 'mail order' bride. I asked Tom if the rumor was true.

Well old Tom assured him that it was. I asked Tom the age of his new bride to be. Tom proudly said, “She'll be twenty-one in October.”

Now I, know that the sexual appetite of a young woman could not be satisfied by an eighty-year-old man. Wanting my old friend's remaining years to be happy I tactfully suggested that Tom should consider getting a hired hand to help him out on the ranch, knowing nature would take its own course. Tom thought this was a good idea and said he would look for one that afternoon.

About four months later, I ran into Tom in town again. “How's the new wife?”, I asked. Tom proudly said, “Good - she's pregnant.”

I was happy that my advice had worked out, and continued, “And how's the hired hand?” Without hesitating, Tom said, “She's pregnant too.” Don't ever underestimate old guys.

You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks. One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young. Ah, being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable. First you forget names, then you forget faces. Then you forget to pull up your zipper. It's worse when you forget to pull it down.

(A letter from someone who wants to remain anonymous, who farms, writes well and who actually tried this.)

I had this idea that I could rope a deer, put it in a stall, feed it up on corn for a couple of weeks, then kill it and eat it. The first step in this adventure was getting a deer. I figured that, since they congregate at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have much fear of me when we are there (a bold one will sometimes come right up and sniff at the bags of feed while I am in the back of the truck not 4 feet away), it should not be difficult to rope one, get up to it and toss a bag over its head (to calm it down) then hog tie it and transport it home.

I filled the cattle feeder then hid down at the end with my rope. The cattle, having seen the roping thing before, stayed well back. They were not having any of it. After about 20 minutes, my deer showed up - 3 of them. I picked out a likely looking one, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw my rope.

The deer just stood there and stared at me. I wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the end so I would have a good hold. The deer still just stood and stared at me, but you could tell it was mildly concerned about the whole rope situation. I took a step towards it, it took a step away. I put a little tension on the rope, and then received an education.

The first thing that I learned is that, while a deer may just stand there looking at you funny while you rope it, they are spurred to action when you start pulling on that rope.

That deer EXPLODED. The second thing I learned is that pound for pound, a deer is a LOT stronger than a cow or a colt. A cow or a colt in that weight range I could fight down with a rope and with some dignity. A deer-- no Chance. That thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled.

There was no controlling it and certainly no getting close to it. As it jerked me off my feet and started dragging me across the ground, it occurred to me that having a deer on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as I had originally imagined. The only upside is that they do not have as much stamina as many other animals.

A brief 10 minutes later, it was tired and not nearly as quick to jerk me off my feet and drag me when I managed to get up. It took me a few minutes to realize this, since I was mostly blinded by the blood flowing out of the big gash in my head. At that point, I had lost my taste for corn-fed venison. I just wanted to get that devil creature off the end of that rope.

I figured if I just let it go with the rope hanging around its neck, it would likely die slow and painfully somewhere. At the time, there was no love at all between me and that deer. At that moment, I hated the thing, and I would venture a guess that the feeling was mutual.

Despite the gash in my head and the several large knots where I had cleverly arrested the deer's momentum by bracing my head against

various large rocks as it dragged me across the ground, I could still think clearly enough to recognize that there was a small chance that I shared some tiny amount of responsibility for the situation we were in. I didn't want the deer to have to suffer a slow death, so I managed to get it lined back up in between my truck and the feeder - a little trap I had set before hand... kind of like a squeeze chute. I got it to back in there and I started moving up so I could get my rope back.

Did you know that deer bite? They do! I never in a million years would have thought that a deer would bite somebody, so I was very surprised when ...... I reached up there to grab that rope and the deer grabbed hold of my wrist. Now, when a deer bites you, it is not like being bit by a horse where they just bite you and slide off to then let go. A deer bites you and shakes its head--almost like a pit bull. They bite HARD and it hurts.

The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is probably to freeze and draw back slowly.. I tried screaming and shaking instead. My method was ineffective. It seems like the deer was biting and shaking for several minutes, but it was likely only several seconds.

I, being smarter than a deer (though you may be questioning that claim by now), tricked it. While I kept it busy tearing the tendons out of my right arm, I reached up with my left hand and pulled that rope loose.

That was when I got my final lesson in deer behavior for the day. Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on their back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and their hooves are surprisingly sharp ... I learned a long time ago that, when an animal - like a horse - strikes at you with their hooves and you can't get away easily, the best thing to do is try to make a loud noise and make an aggressive move towards the animal. This will usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape.

This was not a horse. This was a deer, so obviously, such trickery would not work. In the course of a millisecond, I devised a different strategy. I screamed like a woman and tried to turn and run. The reason I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that paws at you is that there is a good chance that it will hit you in the back of the head.

Deer may not be so different from horses after all, besides being twice as strong and 3 times as evil, because the second I turned to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and knocked me down..

Now, when a deer paws at you and knocks you down, it does not immediately leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger has passed. What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on you while you are laying there crying like a little girl and covering your head.

I finally managed to crawl under the truck and the deer went away. And that’s why we shoot deer in the wild.

A man goes to visit his 85-year old grandpa in the hospital "How are you grandpa?" He asks

"Feeling fine" says the old man What's the food like?

"Terrific, wonderful menus" "And the nursing?"

"Just couldn't be better. These young nurses really take care of you" "What about sleeping? Do you sleep okay?"

"No problem at all, nine hours solid every night. At 10 o'clock they bring me a cup of hot chocolate and a Viagra tablet and that's it. I go out like a light."

The grandson is puzzled and a little alarmed by this, so rushes off to question the nurse in charge. "What are you people doing" he says. "I'm told you're giving an 85 year old Viagra on a daily basis. Surely that can't be true?"

"Oh, yes" replies the nurse. "Every night at 10 o'clock we give him a cup of chocolate and a Viagra tablet. It works won-derfully well". "The chocolate makes him sleep, and the Viagra stops him from rolling out of bed".

The One & Only Buick 10 Convertible

This 1950 Buick won “Car of the Year” honors from the KFC

(yes, as in Kentucky Fried Chicken!) Po-Boy (but not the food this time, but Poor-boy), Cruise-In held at Tillman’s Corner (actually, west Mobile) the first Saturday of every month…. every single month, all year around.

That cruise-in is emerging at “The One,” with its regular attendance of fantastic cars like this one, plus the 12-month non-stop schedule, and neat touches like live bands, such as the NaNaSha’s from Louisiana and 11-piece big bands (ok, wise guys, 11 may not be BIG, and the members weren’t, either, and certainly not their trim diva lead singer, but that refers to the style of music or ensemble), and the roving Azalea Trail Maids (not actually maids, ok?). Hopefully that’s enough of the titles that have to be disclaimed.

Much thanks for the success of this cruise-in goes to JoJo Johnson, who you’ve probably heard if not actually met yet. JoJo is the MC for a number of other cruise-ins. His traveling DJ booth plays the smoothest tunes, and is large enough to host an entire big band, at least now that we know what big band actually means.

One of the neat things Po-Boys and FKC does is award a “Car of the Month” every, er, month. Photos of each winner are displayed prominently there at KFC and then at the end of the year, they select, from those 12, a (here it comes…) Car of the Year! Another neat point: the winners have to attend the shows, so if you’re one of the 12 Finalists, you don’t have to worry about some non-local with a killer show-rod merely swinging through there and winning the Grand Enchilada while not even coming back by to eat it. No one gets any enchiladas anyway, but the KFC buffet is pretty good.

As for the Buick, it was a 1950 Mercury 8 Convertible, true numbers-matching classic, resto-mod, with…a Viper V-10 motor in it! And it is all very, very, well done. When the car had only 42,000 miles on it some fool spent about four years taking it down to the frame and building it back, very carefully and really even better than Mercury did. It now also sports air conditioning and disk brakes all around. They had to use a 1949 dashboard in order to have room for all of the extra gauges and switches. But above and beyond the amazing quality of the build, it’s looking under that hood that causes guys to go weak in the knees. (that and seeing our model Mandy standing nearby in her pinup ensemble and stilettos – let us know if you want Mandy at your show, by the way)

Ford sold about 86,000 original Mercury 8s, from 1939 to 1951. They cost nearly $1,000 new and were one of Ford’s efforts to market itself as economical, even back in the days when gasoline cost 30 cents per gallon. It would hit close to 20mpg! and that was the case despite Ford stuffing it with a blistering 95hp V-8, leading the industry with powerful hydraulic drum brakes, an anti-sway stabilizer bar, and originally marketing it as a performance car, hence its name Mercury, in reference to the Greeks’ swift messenger to the gods. Mercury 8’s reputation as a hot rod sedan outweighed its economical marketing hype and became quite popular in several movies and with customizers, as a lead sled, and famous Hot Wheels Car.
