A new Hancock County Children’s Center just opened and car/motorcycle clubs all along the Gulf Coast pitched in to help fill the needs of the deserving. Saturday night July 12, during the Misfits Cruise-in, Coast Cruizers members, Hope Haven Children’s Services staff members, and cruise-in attendees looked on as Misfits President, Bobby Gavagnie handed the keys to Lora Mederos Executive Director, of the Hancock County Human Resources Agency.

There were so many folks who help finance the reconditioning of this van. Maybe you didn’t directly give to the van project but even if you just attended a cruise night or show you helped the cause.

Here is another example of where community clubs and originations help make a difference. The Thanksgiving and Christmas season will be here before you know it.. and most all of us will once again “get into the spirit”, wanting to hold Food drives & toy drives, this year will be no exception.

Now if your family runs like mine, it’s hard to imagine where you can come up with the extra to give away,….and it seems like Peter doesn't have any more for Paul to rob, but it always seems there is a little something to give. Most shows are a benefit of some sort, to help someone and we invite the public to participate..

The Coast Cruizers went on another dinner cruise in June. This time we went to Pass Christian to a restaurant called Daddyz

in The Pass. The building has been a restaurant for awhile but just

recently became Daddys. We had twenty people show up for some good old home style cooking.

They have breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast has a little of everything from plates, Omelets, sandwiches, pancakes, French toast and a bunch of sides you can order.

Lunch is salads, sandwiches, poboys and burgers. Most sandwiches and poboys come dressed with mayo, lettuce. tomato and pickle.

Now to dinner that is where the best is, be it pork chops, hamburger steak, liver and onions, red beans and rice with sausage and don't forget the rib eye steak dinner. All dinners come with a mashed potatoes or fries and a choice of vegetables.

There is also the seafood plates and platters. You have to have seafood if you have a restaurant on the coast. There is catfish, oysters, shrimp soft shell crab and a seafood platter. The seafood comes from the Pass and is local. The catfish is Mississippi pond raised. Plus a lot of homemade desserts.

Here we are in the hottest part of the car show season, Aug & Sept and the only signs of things slowing down is reflected in the price of gas. I know the higher it gets the less I travel and I’ll admit the 10mpg street rod doesn’t get used as much as the 20mpg van. So the far away car shows are planned for. Like the Emerald Coast Cruizin in Nov. I hope to see ya’ll at Hot Rod Alley this year. ……. jimbo

Jimbo, This year’s Veterans Appreciation Fun Run was a great success. The weather sure looked

doubtful all week as the rain would not go away, but when Saturday arrived the sun was out in all its glory.

Twenty seven vehicles and 3 motorcycles made a nice show at the Jackson Home. The Vets, as they made their way around the vehicles, were escorted and assisted by the “Woman of Word and Worship Ministry”. They are members of the Word and Worship Church of Jackson, MS. They did a great job.

Off to lunch at the Smoke House BBQ and on to Kosciusko. A special thanks to Sheriff Tim Nail, Attala County for the escort thru town. It was the first time for many of the hot-rodder’s to be following blue lights instead of being chased by them!!

We finished the day with 40 different vehicles participating and $750 being collected for the Veterans Home Activities Account. The money was divided between the two homes.

I want to personally thank our Sponsors and Participants for making this a fun day for our Veterans.

A simple phone call could change everything


First Hot Rod Power Tour Trip

Made a commitment last year to go on the Hot Rod Power Tour for 2014, original plans were to take my 46 Chevy street rod but as usual I had a bunch of new things added right before trip and due to work had no time to put any test miles on it. So I think to myself what do I do, of course buy another car ready for the trip. With the reluctant blessing of my wife Kathy I found a 1969 Dodge Super Bee frame up restoration, with my must have 4spd and her A/C. Car had just had engine overhauled and had only 150 mi on it, still with break in oil in it. Well a money transfer made us the proud owner of said vehicle which was in Nashville, Ga.

Got home on Tues and flew to Jacksonville, Fla. on Wed. Drove over and picked up car and put a couple of hundred miles on break in oil on Thurs. Found a few things like the overhauled four speed transmission sometimes would get stuck in reverse and it was hard to find third. Made a list of all issues and early on Fri returned to Nashville where builder jumped right on car, changed oil, adjusted trans and fixed several other small problems.

Left Nashville early afternoon headed for Charlotte, NC our starting place. On the way up we ran A/C and noticed temp was getting high unless on highway, trans was shifting better which was a positive. It started raining a little and that is when I found out my two speed wipers only had one speed and that was superfast.

We arrived at the hotel in Charlotte with no major problems on Thursday. and went to speedway for special BBQ for Gold Long haulers. On Friday morning I was third in line at the Gold Pkg. registration and got my package and gifts. We had time before heading to our special BBQ at track for only the Gold Package Long haulers so we headed off to sightsee.

In hindsight the next activity could have been better thought out. I decided to use a drive through car wash (I know, what was I thinking) so here Kathy and I start through tunnel. Good news was my side was dry all the way through, but about three quarters of a way in I heard a piercing scream from Kathy and looked over and saw water flying in through a gap on top of the window. Needless to say she was not impressed. I thought oh well just put that on my list to fix and don’t go through washes again. Went to vac car and opened trunk, it seems there is a right way and a wrong way to install a new trunk gasket. I was on the wrong side of the 50/50 chance it was right, and I had several gallons of water in the bottom of the trunk.

After removing everything and drying it out we headed for the parts store to see about a new fan clutch to fix the temp problems. Amazingly they had it in stock. We went to track Sat afternoon and the Gold Long haulers had special reserved parking which was great. We enjoyed seeing the vendors and all the other cars. Took advantage of this opportunity to claim our “FREE” long hauler jackets which only required we buy fourteen twenty dollar tee shirts which in layman’s terms means our free jackets cost us $280. We will wear them proudly. When it gets cooler look for us to be wearing them at Edgewater nites.

Next morning we (meaning me) popped up early and went out to parking lot to install new fan clutch, with a little lost skin and a few bruised knuckles later I was able to wiggle the old one out without having to remove shroud, when I backed out studs that held fan to clutch to put them in the new one I learned the old one had fine threads on the screw in part of stud and new replacement had course. Well that required a mooched trip to Lowes to get the right studs and clutch was installed.

Even though you have a map and directions for each day you are free to travel any route you want. Since we were going to Knoxville and it was forecast to rain we opted for more interstate than was called for. Made it to Knoxville and if the GPS had said left on the last turn instead of right we would have been at the motel 45 mins earlier. Got checked in early and missed the crowd. Went to venue and visited vendors and looked at cars again. This was my second trip by American Powertrain which sold the Tremec 5sp kit for my car. (Kathy was not too happy about this) but I held off on purchase.

Next morning after adding a quart of oil to car we were off to

Charleston WV. Rain was forecast again on Monday so we opted for “our” interstate short cut. Well the people who followed route made the trip in about 5.5 hrs, our shortcut took us 8 hrs. which put us at venue late but in time to get our card stamped. We got to hotel and checked in, found a corner spot in the parking garage and went to the bar. Next morning added another quart of oil, by this time I am wondering where it is going as I see no smoke behind me? We decide to pay a little more attention to route directions and followed most of it to our next stop Norwalk, OH. Route was great, mostly through rolling country side with plenty of small towns where people were sitting in lawn chairs and waving at us. Was a great money maker for a few towns as the local police were busy handing out “wallpaper”. We just fell in with a crowd and had a great day. Only issue was I was noticing a wet spot on Kathy’s carpet, turns out something in heater was leaking anti-freeze. Oh well another stop to parts store got us a 90 degree fitting and two caps to block off hoses.

Hotel was great and parking lot packed with cars. Venue was getting a little old with same vendors but we enjoyed our little daily visit to American Powertrain, by now I am on a first name basis with everyone. Kathy was starting to get that resigned look. Stopped by Cracker Barrel and swapped out audio book and we were good to go.

Looking at the car that evening in the parking-lot, I found a nut missing on valve cover gasket, got one and tightened all the rest. Exhaust gasket was leaking on manifold but tightening it did not help, just have to live with it. I added yet another quart of oil. Found out up north they have no need for 20w50w oil the best you can get is 10w40w. Noticed where we park a little puddle of oil but not bad, guess I will just keep on adding till we get home and up on a lift to check it out.

Next morning up and at it as we learned if you are late to the venue there will be a big line and a lot of stop and go. Made it to Bettendorf, IA. with no problems. I was checking the car out that afternoon and noticed that the headlights which did work now did not. I went to the free Chevrolet traveling fix it area and after a little wait found out it was the new dimmer switch that had gone bad. Autozone had a booth in vendor area and all I had to do was call a store and they dropped it off at the booth, within 2 hrs had new one and installed it, problem

solved. Well not quite, seems when prying dash cluster out enough to check switch the man had pulled the speedo cable from speedometer which I did not realize till we started out the next day. But hey I know it really resonates in fourth gear between 50 and 55 mph so I just gauged speed from noise levels in slow areas and by how many cars were passing me or how many I was passing on the interstate. While at my daily trip to American Powertrain I finally could not stand it anymore, you guessed it, we are now the proud owner of a 5spd Tremec complete bolt in kit which should arrive in about 4 weeks.

Well next morning off to our final stop at Wisconsin Dell’s, Wisconsin. We skirted Chicago but nogo, real bad traffic, this venue was great, had a 2bedroom condo and they had both an inside and outside water park with a huge hot tub. The Gold long hauler’s got to park right on the fairway of the golf course, it was great. We had a great time there.

Got up early next morning for Long hauler award ceremony which had way more attendance than anyone thought, got cool metal route signs, opted not to wait around for group picture as we had 1,100 mi to get home, the picture was taken as we drove out of the venue and were passing the Hot Rod motorhome.

We made it to just south of St. Louis before getting a hotel. Next day about Wiggins the A/C suddenly quit and Kathy asked me what those two wires were that appeared hanging at her feet. Add that to my fix it later list. Arrived home about 4pm and got up the next day and had to fly to work in California.

All in all trip was great, we would do some things a little different if we go again but would suggest it to anyone. Read about the trip in the Hot Rod Magazine and for the record attendance figures. Special thanks to my wife for going on the trip, she never complained about anything, just took it in stride.

Sweet hair & makeup tips from Candy Cocktail One of my favorite things in the whole world is makeup!! I

absolutely love the way you can enhance beauty and get creative with it. You can create a totally different look from your everyday. I see makeup as an art form: instead of doing it on a canvas, you use your face to create the artwork. Makeup allows you to try a different style every time.

I think as women, we should stick together. We should empower one another and help each other out instead of being caddy as the world is tough enough. For this reason, I enjoy sharing my hair and makeup tips with my fellow ladies.

When I was in high school, I used to play for hours in the mirror perfecting my look. I still love playing with my hair and makeup when I have extra time. I am a total girly girl so it is what I do best! I love to get dolled up for a special occasion! In recent years, I have had other people request and pay me to make them look extra gorgeous! I find that flattering! It is one thing to make yourself feel like a glamour gal, but it is quite another to have the honor of making a fellow lady feel great about herself, creating a gorgeous look to match a beautiful personality!

Since it is something I am told I am particularly good at, I would love to share some of my tips and favorite products with you foxy ladies reading this at home. Whether you are already an expert or just learning about how to perfect the pin-up look, I have some tricks of the trade that may help you out! ;)

I certainly realize that makeup can be expensive. I spend way more money than I should on makeup, but what can I say, it is a guilty pleasure. Guys will never understand that these are necessary splurges. However, if we want to keep from spending all of our spare change on makeup so that we can spend it on our other guilty pleasures, like accessories, shoes and purses; we try to save where we can. I do this by choosing which makeup items to splurge on and which ones I can be frugal with. I do not think you need to spend $20-30 per eye shadow at Mac to get good makeup results. Some of my favorite items are made by affordable drug store brands like Milani, Revlon, L'Oreal and Maybelline. E. L. F. (eyes, lips, face) is a newer company that sells makeup online for very reasonable prices.

I have tons of makeup and try to take stock in every color, but even I sometimes don't have just the right shade of lip

gloss. One of my favorite tips I read was that if you don't have a lot of lip colors to pick from in your collection or are unable to find just the right shade, use eye shadow. Since most eye shadows come in palettes with lots of varying colors, simply pick the color you think would complement your other makeup best and simply apply the shadow to your lips with your finger. Then add some clear gloss over it and you are done! I usually just put plain old petroleum jelly on my lips over the eye shadow so I get color and moisturizing at the same time. I particularly like this because you can create all kinds of colors!

I believe the key characteristic to achieving the pinup look is winged eyeliner. In my opinion, you absolutely cannot use pencil eyeliner for wings. Over the years I have become a connoisseur of liquid eyeliners. I have tried every known kind and I still stick with the best. I have found that Revlon ColorStay Liquid Liner works flawlessly.

The #1 makeup compliment I get from women of all ages is about my eyeliner. I have had numerous women say to me that they love that look and have tried to do it many times unsuccessfully. My tips are to use a good liquid liner, Q-tips and lots of practice. It takes a lot of practice to prefect this look. I used to spend hours in the mirror to get my eyeliner wings just right and both sides matching. At first it may be helpful to hold one eyelid closed while you apply the liner to it. Sometimes it is easier to see the eye closed and compare the angle of the wing. By contrast, I know some women that do the wing first using the angular corner of a sponge or something similar to make both wings the same size and angle from the corner of the eye. Then they fill in the rest of the liner on the inside and middle of the eye. For me personally, I start from the inside and work my way out, just like I was writing an artistic sentence. Once I am at the outside corner, I do the angled wing and try to make the wings the same on both eyes. However, this does not always work. If I am unsuccessful the first time, I will remove just the wing part of my eyeliner with a Q-tip that is wet with either water or makeup remover. I will keep redoing it until I get it just right for identically matched wings. It is easier to redo the wing than to redo the eyeliner on the whole eye. When you do the eyeliner wing, pay close attention to the angle of the wing, but also the thickness, the length of the wing and where it starts the curve from, whether it is at the base of your eyelashes or farther out.


My favorite new secret weapon for chapped lips is lip conditioner. These are not the same as plain old Chap Stick. If you forget to moisturize your lips regularly and then want to wear lipstick for the day, it will not look good because lipstick can actually make the dryness more obvious. However, if you add a pre-lipstick moisturizer first, it not only helps your lips look smoother and covers the chap, but it also feels amazing and the lipstick will stay on longer. I am obsessed with Victoria's Secret VSPro Moisture FX Softening lip balm and Estée Lauder Lip Conditioner.

If you have not yet heard of The “Wet” Brush you are missing out on an amazing invention. The revolutionary Wet Brush is my favorite new hair tool. It is designed specifically for wet hair. It will comb through even the knottiest of wet hair without causing pain or pulling out lots of your hair. If your post shower hair is anything like mine, it can quickly become a rat's nest. Or if you have children with thick hair, which is exacerbated by an afternoon spent in a chlorine filled pool, even this brush will comb through their hair. It is ideal for ethnic and curly hair. The brushes are available online in regular or travel size in an assortment of colors. I promise it is a worthwhile investment.

Lipstick vs. Lip gloss: Personally I like the shine of lip gloss better than the dullness of lipstick, but the one plus lipstick has over lip gloss is that it will last!! If you want it to stay on all day & you don't have time to stop for touch ups, lipstick is the best choice! (& sometimes it will even still be on the next day)

Red lipstick always makes your teeth look whiter! Nonetheless it is the worst for smearing on your teeth. Be sure to get rid of the excess by putting 1 finger in your mouth, lips wrapped around it and pull it out so the extra lipstick comes off on your finger instead of your pearly whites. To make your pout appear bigger, line your lips a bit outside of where they actually are.

If you see something in the store that inspires you to try a new look, buy it. Do not be afraid to try something new! When you have some extra time, practice and play with your makeup! If you start with 1 color, say black eye shadow, and once you have applied it you dislike like the color, get creative and add some other colors, like silver or purple, until you like what you see. Many times someone will ask me what color I have on and I tell them a bunch of different colors because I just kept adding different shadows until I liked the color I ended up with. With a lipstick, if it seems too bright, add a gloss or another color on top to dilute the color a bit.

Don't be afraid if you initially feel that your makeup look is really drastic. As an example, when you first add a significant shade of eye shadow and think that it is too much, just wait until you add your liner and your mascara or false lashes. Often times those things will wrap up and complete the look so that one part of it does not look like too much. If after you add those things you still dislike it, change the look some until you are happy with it. However if you will be taking pictures or doing something like a pinup photo shoot, remember lights will drown out colors so everything needs to be more exaggerated and drastic than you would wear for your everyday look. There are countless beneficial hair and makeup tips and how to videos on websites like Pinterest and YouTube.

Last but not least, my #1 tip for stopping traffic is to smile. Of course makeup looks good on what we now call "resting-face" but it looks even better on the beautiful smile that radiates from a happy and confident woman! Ever notice how when you feel great, you feel unstoppable? When you feel good about yourself, even your day will seem to go better! As Coco Chanel would say, “I don't understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little-if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that's the day she has a date with destiny. And it's best to be as pretty as possible for destiny.”

Another trick for quick and easy pinup hair: Snoods!

A snood is a retro hair wrap perfect for the 40s look when you do not have much time to spend. Just fluff or do a curl in the front and tuck the rest of the hair in your snood. Pin it on and you are ready to go. Another easy to do accessorizing tip: when in doubt, add a flower. It is a quick, easy and fun addition to any style, even if you just throw your hair up in a bun. It is a fast way to add a little something extra.

Car. It seated 6 passengers and featured a tonneau when not using the rear seats. It was powered by a vertical mounted straight-4 and produced 40 hp. A unique feature of this model was electric running lights. It sold for $6,000. The other model was a runabout with a smaller displacement producing 25 hp. This car weighed in at 1800 lbs, 1600 lbs less than the Touring Car. The runabout sold for $3,500. 1907 to 1912, Apperson produced one of its most popular vehicles, the Jackrabbit Speedster. It sold for $5,000 and was powered by a 60 hp engine. The company advertising guaranteed it would do 75MPH. In 1913, they produced their first 6-cylinder models, the 6-45 and the 6-55. These were essentially Jackrabbit models with 6-cylinder engines producing 45 or 55 hp. They later dropped prices to $2,000 for these models. Elaine Stermer Grumbine in recalling her childhood days near Flagstaff, Arizona, vividly recalls a summer day in 1924 when Sadie Apperson and her sister Jessie (Apperson) Stafford came by for a visit driving “a sport car unlike any that I had seen before.” “One evening Daddy (George Stermer) came home and said, “Elaine, you're going to ride a Jack Rabbit tonight. I said, Daddy, I can't ride a Jack Rabbit!” He said: “Oh, yes, you will.” “ After

dinner he walked downtown (Flagstaff)(four or five blocks away). Soon he drove up in a kind of car that I had never seen before. Sadie and Jessie went with him in Jessie's Apperson Jackrabbit. Daddy was so proud to have a chance to drive it. Jessie sat up front

and Mother, Cousin Sadie and I sat in back. It had big wheels with (perhaps wooden) spokes and I think it had

some red trim. It was a flashy looking automobile.” 1916 was the best year for Apperson. Sales after that declined steadily. Even with new offerings with Lycoming V-8 power could not turn the tide. When Elmer died in 1920 the end was in sight. Lower priced models were produced. They still lost ground to the mass-produced vehicles of Ford and Chevrolet. Always the race fan, Elmer Apperson dropped dead of a massive heart attack while spectating at the Beverly Hills board track. Edgar Apperson sold his shares of the company and retired to Arizona where he died in 1959. The slogans for Apperson Motors were: “The Eight with eighty less parts”, and

“Beauty that lasts”. Those were a lot better than the ones Uncle Ezra suggested. His were: “The best way to get back on your feet is to miss a car payment”, and for his repair shop, “Try us once. You'll never go anywhere again”.

Here were two more great men who were pioneers in the automobile industry. This was another era in United States history that showcased the ingenuity and brilliance of Americans.

as Henry Ford, Ransom Olds and other famous automobile manufacturers, their contributions to the auto industry are just as significant. They were responsible for one of the first functioning automobiles, if not the first, in the United States. After building their automobile in 1894, the three men formed the Haynes-A p p e r s o n A u t o m o b i l e Company in Kokomo, Indiana, one of the first car manufacturing companies in the country. Three years after incorporation, a dispute over money caused the partnership to be cancelled and Edgar and Elmer Apperson formed their own company. Both companies lasted until the mid-1920's. I have already written about Elwood Haynes. Now I will tackle the Apperson brothers.

Elmer Apperson whose portrait is the one on the left, collaborated with his brother Edgar and Haynes on their early cars. He was born in 1861 in Kokomo, Indiana, eight years before Edgar. Elmer was an apprentice machinist at a locomotive shop in Peru, Indiana, before opening his first machine shop in 1888. Soon, Edgar joined him there as an employee. The business primarily specialized in repairing farm equipment, although it also patented some cutting tools used to clear forest in the area. Apperson Motors was founded by the brothers in 1902.

Their first car in 1902 used a stintz two-cylinder engine (called a twin). The 1903 car featured a four-cylinder engine and the twin was dropped in 1904. These cars sold for between $2,000 and $5,000. In 1904, Apperson Motors started selling two models. One was the Touring

The “good old days” of no roofs, fenders, or doors on race cars.

In Chicago, Illinois, there is a Stadium, built in 1924 called “Soldiers Field” and the NFL Chicago Bears are placed there. (It seats about 65,000 and that's a generous estimate). Well, in 1949, Andy Granatelli had a stock car circuit (late models) that he ran every Saturday nite. He owned all the cars at first, and hired drivers. That didn't bring in the crowds enough, so he started selling off most of them to drivers and people that wanted to be racers.

At this time I'm running for the St. Louis Racing Assoc. out of Missouri. The “Director” was Ben Chesney, big time midget driver of the late 30's and early 40's.

Andy wanted to increase the profits by running a “split show” with the midgets. This was very often done with a “Sprint-Midget” split show and the crowds loved it! So Ben Chesney gives the o.k., and gives the “go ahead” for a split show with the stock cars.

Now one of the really fast engines of 1949 was the “Olds Rocket” overhead valve engine designed by G. M. Henry Kettering. If you follow early NASCAR you will know “Tim Flock” of NASCAR fame won many races in his “1949 Olds Rocket”.

So we pull in to Soldiers Field, it's a ¼ mile asphalt around the football field in the center. Chuck Leighton, Indy 500 driver come over to me and says “I'm really going to make some money tonite!” He tells me that in addition to the #30 midget he drove, he was also in one of Andy's stock cars.

I'm standing in the pits watching the main event for stock cars and Chuck is in about 5th place, when all of a sudden “flames” came shooting out the side windows, and the crowd really gasps, then loud cheers as Chuck “bails out” in the infield. About 6 or 8 guys with extinguishers rush out and put out the fire. Chuck walks out and waves to the crowd. From then on, the announcers all called him “Satan” Leighton, who escaped from hell in the burning car! (This is not to be confused with Frank Satan Brewer of New Zealand, Australia, and U.S. racing, who was also called Satan). By the way Mich, if you have any photo's of Satan Brewer, please e-mail them to Gordon McIsac in Auckland, New Zealand. He has a museum there.

So as we loaded up that night, I went over to Chuck and asked “what happened out there?” He laughed and said “I made $150.00 for that little stunt”. They had put 5 burlap bags behind the front seat and poured gas all over them! Chuck took a zippo lighter lit it, threw it in back, flipped the ignition off, headed for the infield and bailed out!

The last time I saw him was “Turkey Nite” 1957 at Gardena, Calif. It was after the races, probably 1 a.m. and I'm at a placed that was owned by Lococo's on Pacific Coast Highway in Gardena. Chuck is sitting there in a booth with a “Darlin Child” under his arm. He motioned for me to sit down, and I did.

He had an interest in one of the Midgets that had missed the program (over 100 cars showed to qualify.) About the time he started to speak, the Mgr. waved at him, so he got up and went down the hall to the back office.

It's the middle of summer and I still have the Summertime Blues". No good dramatic movie releases coming anytime soon so I take what I can get and wait for the fall to come. Oh yes, fall, the kids are back in school the matinees are not too crowded and Hollywood lets loose of some Oscar contenders. You know, movies where the leads can't fly and transform into muscle cars or minivans or…

So first up we have a screen adaptation of a musical bio that has been on Broadway for years, Jersey Boys. The film is directed by Clint Eastwood and is rated R. It has a run time of 134 minutes.

I was excited about seeing the July story of the four seasons and was not disappointed. Maybe being a musician gave me an instant buzz about this story but director Clint Eastwood did a great job translating this Broadway production to the silver screen.

Actor John Lloyd plays Frankie Valli, a singer who came from humble beginnings in Jersey to the top of the pop charts. Frankie and the rest of the future Four Seasons were smalltime criminals destined for prison. But Frankie Valli had a special voice that brought attention to him and his bandmates that brought them salvation through a music career.

This is a great age-old story and was well paced, interesting but sometimes an odd film. They used narration that broke the fourth wall to tell the story. That was my one complaint about this musical adaptation. It sometimes broke the rhythm of the film

Christopher Walken stole the screen with a stellar performance as a monster who took a liking to Frankie and help them achieve success and happiness. Well, almost happiness. Go see the movie and find out for yourself

I will gladly give this falsetto singing, ex thug and his bandmates saga eight out of 10 picks

Next up is a comedy titled Tammy. This film was written by and stars Melissa McCarthy. This somewhat dull, semi stupid film was directed by her husband Bay Falcon. It is rated R and last about 96, sometimes funny minutes.

I really like Melissa McCarthy and can't wait to see her become the Hollywood A-list superstar she will be one day. This vehicle will not get her there anytime soon.

The movie is packed with veteran a Lister's and could have delivered but was trite, slow and sometimes awful. I keep waiting to see Melissa in a great movie that shows her arrange and death as a comedic actress that can be a dramatic stand out. I'm still waiting Mrs McCarthy!

I won't bother mentioning the superstars who were supporting actors and just put it this way; get a better script and stop playing the same silly, hopeless goofball with a heart of gold. It's all about a good story a good Script, I love sophomore humor like the next one but need a little backbone and depth to push a movie along.

I will give the semi funny yarn 6 out of 10 pics The final offering this month is a horror film called Deliver Us

From Evil. Just well done story of evil stars Eric Bana, Edgar Ramírez and John Mc Cale. It's rated R and clocks in at around 118 minutes.

I don't usually see this type of film but had a show get rained out my drummer Matt Jaden and I took a chance. We weren't disappointed. This is a somewhat true story of possessed people doing bad things to family members and strangers who seem to be tied together through unknown evil forces.

Eric Bana stars as an Iraq war veteran who becomes a cop involved in unexplained gruesome acts of violence. Edgar Ramírez plays a please to works outside of the normal confines of priesthood to bring these evil forces back to hell.

Sure, this movie rate of the all-time classic tell us a tannic possession, the Exorcists. There were many similarities but maybe that goes with the territory of casting out the devil from them this world and sending him back to a warm burning eternity.

Deeper trail of a serious cop with a comedic sidekick is a bit tired. I guess you can't have two hours of burning satanic horror without a couple of jokes to break up the end of days bad vibes.

This film did drag at times. This was a busy story, plenty of subplots that were sometimes confusing. I would. Recommend this film for fans of this type genre.

Let's give this to story of a cop and a priest who traveled the country exercising evil 7 out of 10

I'm having a great summer in 2014. I've been traveling a bit in meeting all kinds of interesting people! You might just see me at your local theater, come say hi. I'm still waiting for some good late-summer dramas but for now, let's just go to the movies and enjoy being entertained. I had a lot of good email responses from last month's column. G rowing up in the late 50’s and 60’s, there was only one King of Cool and that was Steve McQueen. Rabbit ears were the typical antenna of the time and in my home town you could get only one station clearly and that one for me carried the CBS network. It

began for me with the TV program “Wanted Dead or Alive” 1958-1961. Steve McQueen was a cool customer with his portrayal of a former confederate soldier with a soft heart turned bounty hunter named Josh Randall. Randall carried by far the neatest TV gun of all time, even still to this day. With reruns, I saw every episode. I was captivated by the cut down version of the Winchester Model 1892 rifle into a fast action pistol that could be quick drawn. The gun in real life was called the Mare’s Leg and it was cool. The Rifleman had a cool rifle with the big loop that could be twirled with gloves on, but Josh Randall was the King with the Mare’s Leg. As a kid I could not see the gun enough and could not wait for it to be called into action. McQueen was the epitome of a cool, calm and collected good guy. McQueen came off as a guy too regular and too cool to be a star, but his unassuming demeanor made him the best and out of that character was born a superstar. McQueen invited the King of Cool by inventing the un-hero, that became a hero. The Josh Randall character was Steve McQueen from that day forward. You could change the context of the day, time and situation, but Steve McQueen had found his base and he would hold on to it literally kicking and screaming and guarded it for the rest of his life. Next came the 1963 movie “The Great Escape”. There were some other serious actors in the movie, but for me there was only one star. Steve McQueen played prisoner of war Captain Virgil Hilts, the Cooler King in a German POW camp that never stopped trying to escape. The cooler is where he ended up when caught trying to escape. He engineered a brilliant plan that involved tunnels and mine shaft type rails and tracks. The escape employed an ingenious way to dispose of the dirt they were taking out of the tunnel, an incredible almost magical way to disguise and trick the

eye as to hiding their efforts to escape. The writing was superb and there was that unmistakable Josh Randall character, this time in the mid 1940’s, during World War II as a prisoner of war. The scene where McQueen jumped the barbed wire fence on the 650 Triumph started to seal the deal with me and Steve McQueen forever. Level headed, sharp, down to earth, unassuming, the guy next door with a big heart but tough as nails, a character that was easy to underestimate until it was too late, now add a guy that could ride the heck out of a motorcycle. (I know insurance would not let McQueen actually make the jump, but he was sure capable of it!)

The third in the trilogy of the legend of Steve McQueen for me was the 1968 movie “Bullitt”. Steve McQueen was the persona of all the things I mentioned above, but in real life he also loved cars, motorcycles and speed. This was the final piece of the puzzle to make Steve McQueen the King of Cool in my eye. As the old saying goes…game, set and match! Cool, tough, smart, unassuming and a car/motorcycle guy. McQueen will be remembered for one of the greatest car chase scenes of all time, through the streets of San Francisco, with its extreme elevation changes in Bullitt. McQueen did his own driving. The chase scene was cool, but the car was also one that would be immortalized…the dark green 1968 Ford GT 390 Mustang Fastback. The car was customized to fit the persona of cool and it hit the mark dead on. The other car in the chase scene was cool also, a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440, but McQueen was in the Mustang! McQueen had some good movies, The Magnificent Seven, The Sand Pebbles, The Thomas Crown Affair, Papillon, LeMans, On Any Sunday, The Towering Inferno, and many, many more. I loved them all, but what I call the trilogy made Steve McQueen in my mind. McQueen lived in the moment and truly thought that his success was only temporary and he tried to stretch it out as long as he could. He always believed that it would all go away at some point and was amazed that it did not. Steve McQueen made it all look so easy, but what I didn’t know is how tough that persona was to create and maintain. It was said that every man wanted to be Steve McQueen and every women wanted to be with him. He learned to steal scenes from huge actors with his quiet demeanor. He said a lot with

a look. He would remove dialog from a script and replace it with looks, movement and pauses. McQueen made acting look easy, but the amazing fact was the work that he put in to his parts to make it appear that easy and to stay true to the character that he created in Wanted Dead or Alive, to adapt that character to any part, those were the tough parts. He out worked and out thought many actors. I think it was fear and street smarts that drove him. McQueen came up from a tough side of town. He never knew his father and his mother was a prostitute, both were alcoholics. The biggest long-shot for being a superstar than you could ever imagine. He never finished high school and according to McQueen he had to quit school to earn a living. When McQueen became famous, he tracked his father down only to find out his father had passed away two weeks earlier.

He was raised in a boy’s home and lived on the street. He joined the Marines at 17 and after three years was back on the street stealing to survive. He


took up acting and went to acting school because he thought it was a cool way to meet girls. He was an extremely competitive person on stage, on the race track and in real life. He was brutal about making sure he stood out versus any other actor he was working with. He was obsessed with it and worked hard at it. McQueen stole the scenes by small actions and great attention to detail. It was his intent to steal every scene he was in and he became great at it. Go back and watch his craft at work. Steve McQueen knew to stay on top… he had to protect his image and control his parts. Steve was considered very hard headed and hard to work with and had the gonads to take it all the way to walking off the set and/or the movie to get his way. It was all about staying true to his character in his mind. A lot of people did not get it, but McQueen did. In his private life McQueen lived life to its fullest. He loved cars, motorcycles and was addicted to living life on the edge and need for speed. He truly lived his entire life as a 17 year old, his zest for life and extreme need for excitement never waned. It was really the only time he could relax. He was a very talented and successful motorcycle racer and race car driver. McQueen was determined to make the movie On Any Sunday about motorcycle racing and LeMans about the 24 Hours of LeMans car race to be the two greatest racing movies of all time. Don’t know if those goals were attained, but it was not due to the lack of effort. Steve McQueen owned tons of great cars and cool motorcycles, had a tremendous collection and a good eye for the cool. Steve McQueen was the man, one of the greatest actors of all time…the King of Cool, but the end was anything but cool or deserving. I believe if Steve McQueen would have had his choice, he would have gone out like Dale Earnhardt, at the height of his game doing what he enjoyed most, but we aren’t able to choice the way we naturally leave this earth. McQueen developed a persistent cough in 1978 and gave up smoking. His lung cancer was the asbestos related type and was terminal. It was thought to be from his having to clean out the holes of asbestos lined ships hulls. He was assigned to do these duties for disciplinary reasons while in the service, primarily caused by his love of chasing women. After doctors in the USA told him there was nothing they could do, McQueen went to Mexico for treatment and died there in 1980 at the age of 50, the same age that my own father died.

There are a few superstars that had an impact on my life and deserve a spot in the Hot Rod Show trailer, Steve McQueen, James Dean, Elvis, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, CCR and Dale Earnhardt. I’m looking for just the right item for each of them. The middle of June through July has been a deep breath time for me. After getting back from Atlanta and getting back to normal… it seems like it’s the first time since I started the process with the new Hot Rod Show trailer that I could finally catch up with everything, get it under control and catch my breath… and I have really enjoyed it. It was great to get back to my roots and work the Coast Cruisers 1st Saturday Night of the month Cruize-in at Edgewater Mall in Biloxi. We had way over 100 cars and $444 in 50/50, a truly great night seeing great friends. If I had my way I would not miss a single one of them. But July was the only Cruize-in of the summer my schedule allows. August 2 we’ll be in Paris, TN for The OVERDRIVE Car Show, a pretty cool show we are working, the guys from the TV show Counting Cars worked that show last year. To me it’s always been about living every day like it was your last one and enjoying each and every day the Lord gives to us. Also this week I became a Great Granddaddy, yep GREAT Granddaddy, I was in the room for the delivery, but just not on the business end. My goal has been to never grow-up…. and enjoy life. You know my grandfathers and grandmothers were old, never played or did things with us. My kids, grandkids and great grandkids won’t be able to say that. They’ve had to learn to keep up with Paw Paw, lol. It’s never too late to experience life at its fullest, after all we only get to go around once and we have to grab for all the gusto that we can.

I have always been a sports car guy. I’ve had a passion for Porsche, Ferrari, etc. since I was a kid. To be honest, I was kind of a snob about those things and looked down my nose at truck owners. I am a reformed snob, and this is my story: A physician friend of mine once told me when he was a kid his Dad had a 1964 F100 and he always wished he could find one to relive the memories. He then asked if I would help him find one, to which I agreed. Since trucks weren’t really my thing, I didn’t know where to start but kept my eyes peeled. As dumb luck would have it, I found one a few miles from my house at a little used car lot. I examined it and decided, as far as trucks go, this one was in decent shape. Although the original paint was old and faded, it was 100% original, had never been wrecked or modified in any way and ran like a sewing machine.

I called my friend and the next day he met me at the lot. A big smile spread across his face, but after he drove it and realized an early 60’s truck didn’t exactly have the creature comforts of his Mercedes he decided to pass. It didn’t matter to me, so I went about my business. Day after day I drove past the little truck, proud I was above such things.

One day a strange compulsion came over me. I stopped, examined it again and bought it. I rationalized having a “beater” truck to haul things around might be useful to me. My wife, ever the pragmatist, rolled her eyes. I promised over and over I had NO desire to do anything with it other than use it for what it was intended.

A couple of weeks later she had to leave town for the weekend. A pet peeve of mine is a dirty engine bay, so I got out my pressure washer and went to work. When I was done, I wasn’t any happier with the results than when I started. Although all the grease and grime was gone, it still looked old and tattered. The biggest offense was the rusty voltage regulator cover. Looking back, it was that dang voltage regulator cover that started the whole mess and cost me thousands of dollars I had no intention of spending!

I removed the cover and sand blasted it in my blast cabinet, primed it, shot a fresh coat of Ford blue paint on it and reinstalled it. It looked great, but only magnified how bad the rest of the engine bay looked. I next removed the air cleaner cover and repeated the process. And so it went the entire weekend.

When my wife returned on Monday she noticed the truck wasn’t parked in its spot and asked where it was. I sheepishly motioned for her to follow me to my shop. When she stepped inside and saw I had totally disassembled the entire truck while I was unsupervised and it lay in a million pieces in my shop she rolled her eyes, shook her head and went back to the house. ‘It was an accident!’ I assured her. She wasn’t buying it! That dang voltage regulator cover!!

Over the next three years I took each and every piece, inspected it and either refurbished it to like new or replaced it with LMC parts. I tried other suppliers, but quickly learned only LMC had the correct parts at a fair price. My obsession was to turn my little neglected truck into like new 1964 condition using only the best parts available. LMC’s fair prices were just a bonus!

Thanks to LMC and an understanding wife my 1964 F100 has won many awards and was recently invited to show at an exclusive, by invitation only, show put on by the Governor of the state. I use to watch a lot of TV when the kids were little and lived at home..guess some of them shows were inappropriate for them to watch like Archie Bunker or MASH and movies about fighting for our country, of course I’d tell them about every cowboy movie I ever saw an how John Wayne was the best..but

today all ya gotta’ do is turn on the news to get it all at one time.

Seem like the news is the new verity show, full of actors tryin to make a name for themselves in one way or another. Cops an robbers goin’ at it, law suits for everything, nobody behaven’ like they should, someone in a suit telling you how you should just give up all the things you were brought up believing.
