In a recent conversation about potential Christmas gifts for some of our kids, my husband asked me what my most memorable Christmas gift had been.

I’ve had several memo-rable gifts—the elec-tronic baseball game that was far better than the one I had asked for and made me the envy of the third grade boys in my class; the desks that my dad built for my sister and me; the varsity jacket my par-ents surprised me with

in high school; and don’t forget the teddy bear that was holding my engagement ring.

But the most memorable gift I can think of is, and probably always will be, my first-born son, David. He was due on Christmas Day nineteen years ago, and made his appearance just one day late. I don’t remember much about that Christmas other than that I felt really big, really clumsy, and really tired. But even the 15 hours of labor the following day were worth it to be able to hold my baby for the first time!

So when I told my husband that David was my most memorable gift, David’s fourteen-year-old brother, Daniel, heard me, and without missing a beat piped up, “That was a really bad year for Santa—he ran out of coal!”

Now Daniel, as you may notice, is practicing to be a stand up comic some day! None of the family is

safe from his wit, but Da-vid does seem to take the brunt of it more often than the rest of us—that is partly because he is the older brother, and partly just because he is a little bit quirky, something that leaves him susceptible to one-liners quite often.

But quirky or comedian, both of my boys (and my girls too) are a lot of fun to have around. And if Santa really did run out of coal that year, then I for one am very thankful that he did!

Until next time,

Jennifer

Carrie Schneider: Reading Women

In 1997, I was the coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I was having a fun year on the football field, but several of our coaches used to take walks after practice and discuss what was going on, not necessarily with the team, but with our families. One of the things we came up with was we could us tips, little pointers, reminders of how we could be better. It’s amazing to see how it’s developed from that one thought process in 1997, the idea that men have to work hard to be good dads. You want to put the same energy you do at work into your most important job, which is being a father.

The most important offshoot we’ve had from the time that we started All Pro Dad has been the All Pro Dad’s Day breakfasts. Once a month, fathers go to their kid’s schools, a restaurant, or somewhere else and have breakfast with their kids. It gives them the experience of being together and it’s been fantastic. These have branched out all over the country and I get letters, cards, and tweets from people telling me how special that has been.

We have been fortunate to team up with the PTA because PTA’s have understood how beneficial it is when dads get on the school campuses and become involved with the school and their kids. They have teamed up with us because it really has been important. It’s exciting to see greater involvement from fathers. The more that they are there with their kids, the better the schools seem to run, and the better their kids do in school.

Our All Pro Dad’s Day Team recently started a campaign to start 100 new All Pro Dad’s Day chapters. If you would like to start impacting your community today, contact us at www.allprodad.com to find out you can be involved. I promise you it will be one of the most rewarding things you’ve ever done.

Modeling Advice for New ModelsFlorida’s Busy SeasonThe winter months bring many things to Florida. One of the best things it brings is lots of work in modeling and acting. This is the busy season! There are several reasons for this upswing in the modeling and acting industry.

1. This is the concept known as weather permit. Simply put, this is the types of jobs that are dependent on weather conditions. Right now if you are a producer anywhere in the country except Florida and your scene doesn’t allow for snow, you need a new shoot location! That’s where sunny Florida enters. With lower production costs and good weather year-round, Florida is a great choice for production companies. They can do their productions in better weather and save money on their production at the same time.

2. Most of the travel and tourism destinations are in “off-season” and therefore can devote sections of their attractions to shooting new advertising without costing too much or inconveniencing their clientele. In fact, most of the summer fun destinations actually do their advertising shoots during the fall/winter season the year before.

3. During this time of year, there is the massive advertising push from companies world-wide leading into the holiday season and the new year. Many retailers will advertise more during this season than they have all year. So what does that mean for us? Simple! Every one of those ads needs talent! That means more jobs in the modeling and acting industry! Just go to any mall, watch TV for any amount of time or drive down the road and every one of those commercials, posters, banners, billboards and flyers is full of actors that were paid to model those products!

4. This is the best time of year to pursue a career in the acting and modeling industry! All ages, babies, kids, teens and adults are needed, with or without experience in the industry.

If you are interested in becoming one of our Model Management Agency models, please call (727)392-4005.

ASK THE EXPERTPamela, owner, Model Management Agency with over 26 years of experience discovering, developing and promoting talent within the acting and modeling industry offers her tips and answers your questions.

Tony from Largo asks, what is the best age to work as a model or actor?Tony, Florida has a lot of work for models and actors of all ages! Our state is all about travel and tourism, as well as sun and fun which naturally leaves a need for all ages in advertisements. We have Disney, Universal, Busch Gardens, Sea World and many other theme parks located right here in our own area that need models and actors of all ages. Advertising is focused on families all the way to seniors, so there is something for everyone! Babies are needed for everything from print ads to commercials and movies. The best part? Babies grow up so they are always needed. Children and teens do great in catalogs commercials and print ads as well as movie roles and brochures. Adults are needed in every type of project imaginable, and seniors have a huge place advertising to the mature audiences around the globe.Email us your questions to us at [email protected] you are interested in becoming one of our models, call (727) 392-4005 and schedule an appointment to meet with us.

FUN FACTS2 Million lbs. of Ice cold fun

December 25, 2015 The weather outside may not be frightful, but Christmas in Florida can be SO delightful. With warm breezes and swaying palms, and an average high temperature of 72°, Tampa Bay is the ideal location to celebrate the season. This month we have found some pretty unique ways for families to celebrate the season, with our special Christmas section.

6 Facts about Hanukkah1. Hanukkah is a Jewish festival that lasts for 8 days and

nights.2. Hanukkah always starts on the 25th of Kislev.3. It takes 44 candles all together to observe

all the nights of Hanukkah.4. Hanukkah commemorates the

rededication of the Jerusalem temple by Judah Maccabee in 165 B.C.

5. Fried foods are associated with the holiday, since it was oil that kept the sacred fire burning.

6. This year Hanukkah will begin at sundown on December 6th.

December 1, 1955 That was the day when an unknown seamstress in Montgomery, Alabama refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger. This brave woman, Rosa Parks, was arrested and fined for violating a city ordinance, but her lonely act of defiance began a movement that ended legal segregation in America, and made her an inspiration to freedom-loving people everywhere.

Celebrating 50 YearsOn December 9, 1965 the Peanuts classic, A Charlie Brown Christmas debuted on national television. In this Peanut special, a discouraged Charlie Brown asks in despair, “Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?” Linus Van Pelt quietly says he can tell him, and walks to center stage to make his point. Under a spotlight, Linus tells Charlie Brown and the others what Christmas is all about.

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, ‘Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.’”

ICE! at Gaylord Palms resort is Florida’s favorite frigid Christmas tradition, with over 20,000 square-

feet of frosty 9-degree bliss played out in a winter wonderland of exciting hand-carved

sculptures. And this year it’s really all that it’s cracked up to be, featuring two-story tall ice slides carved entirely from TWO MILLION pounds of ice.

ICE! is hand carved by 40 artisans from Harbin, China and this year’s attraction is based on the classic holiday

poem, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. And while you may feel a chill in the air, you will also feel warmth in your heart as you create wonderful family memories.

Minnie Mouse Ornament

Penguin Light Bulb Ornament

Staned Glass Nativity

1. Select a red bulb.2. Take a black sharpie marker

and draw a circle around the top third of the ornament. Then fill the circle with black marker.

3. Paint white dots on the bottom portion of the bulb.

4. Cut out two small circles from the black foam for the Minnie ears. You can use a quarter as a guide.

5. Take a ribbon and tie a bow.6. Glue on the ears and the bow.7. Hang your ornament on the tree!

These penguin light bulb ornaments are quite adorable and are very easy to make. The light bulb shape is perfect for penguins and it is a great way to up-cycle.

1. Clean the glass light bulb with rubbing alcohol.

2. Next paint 2-3 coats of white paint over the entire bulb.

3. Allow time to dry between each coat to avoid paint drips.

4. Paint on the black tuxedo.5. Paint on the penguin eyes, beak

and sweet cheek blush.6. For the hanger, knot a string into a loop

and hot glue it to the cap of the bulb.

1. Create and cut out a silhouette of the manger scene using black construction paper or card stock. You can find many templates on the Internet.

2. Trace the manger onto a piece of Con-tact paper and cut it out. Cut out slightly smaller than the silhouette.

3. Cut up a bunch of little squares of colorful tissue paper.

4. Peel off the backing of the contact paper and begin to layer down all the pieces of tissue paper.

5. Tape or glue down the contact paper art to the back of the silhouette. Use a hook or string to hang on the tree.

December Family of the Month

meet the cuffaro Family

sponsored by

Gulf Coast Family is pleased to honor the Cuffaros as our December Family of the Month. Marc and Lisa and their six children keep very active in the Tampa Bay area; but a loving, giving spirit is truly this family’s crowning jewel. It shines in everything they do—from loving each other no matter what… to helping others… to appreciating the wonders of life and people in Tampa Bay.

This December Marc and Lisa and their children will celebrate their 10th anniversary as a family. They have lived in the area for all 10 years and as the family told us, they couldn’t imagine any place better for their family.

“We love living in the Tampa Bay area. Who could ask for more?” Lisa mused. The Cuffaros’ blended family continues to grow closer in love for each other as they enjoy the area’s beautiful parks, wonderful schools, its amazing attractions and venues and of course, the water front!

Both Marc and Lisa are very involved in the local community. Marc is the founder of Operational Transition Assistance Corporation, a company whose mission is the successful integration of special operations veterans into corporate America through targeted training, placement, and advising programs.

Marc is very passionate about helping our veterans and it is evident to anyone he has a chance to speak with.

“These men and women are respected in the military for being the best of the best,” Marc told us over dinner. “ Special Operations are America’s bravest and brightest, defending liberty and freedom all over the world. Their military experience can bring leadership and accountability to any organization or company, improving their performance and creating better competitive advantage.”

Lisa is the founder of Destiny Adoption Services and Consulting. Destiny Adoption is a nonprofit licensed child placing agency. “Destiny offers adoption services to birth parents that would like to place their child for adoption and prospective adoptive parents that would like to adopt a child,” Lisa told us. “I love helping birth parents design their adoption plan and find the family they want for their child. I am so thankful to be a part of a child finding his/her forever family.”

What a blessing the Cuffaro family has been to so many in the area! We at Gulf Coast Family applaud you for all that you are doing and thank you for all that you are and for your example of a truly giving spirit.

Our Take on Parenting“We are a blended family. Blending a family is not easy, but we focused on spending a lot of family time together and we all fought hard to establish a strong family bond. We are thankful to God that all of our children are very close to us and each other. All the kids love and take care of each other and are proud of the family that we have created.

The question of what do we love the most about parenting is very difficult for us—because it is impossible for us to pick just one thing. We have loved every season of parenting with our children. We love the happy, proud moments and the difficult ones as well. We just feel blessed that God has given these beautiful, extremely talented children to us to guide and support through life.

This month is our 10 year anniversary of all of us becoming a family—it is very special to us all!”

The essence of a great family holiday season is found in the memories that are made by just being together and sharing joy. The stresses of shopping, functions to attend, and all of the other clutter are quickly forgotten. But, the happy memories will re-main forever in the hearts of our families.

To help you have the best holiday season ever, we offer these 10 ways and wish you all a Merry Christ-mas and Happy Holidays!

1 Parades and Festivals: There is no better place to ignite the Christmas spirit than to attend a holi-day parade or a festival with the whole family. Cit-ies and towns offer parades, snow fests, ice sculpt-ing contests, sledding, hot chocolate, and all of the things we associate with the season depending on where you live. Check the calendars in your area for events and make it a family date.

2 Christmas Movie Marathon: Another way to get in the spirit is to make your own festival in the living room. Break out the blankets and cookies and have a movie marathon. The Hallmark Channel offers an array of non-stop holiday movies, and of course there is always Netflix or Redbox.

3 Outdoor Activities: It’s too cold outside? So what! Get out there and have fun in the winter splendor. If you’re lucky enough to live in a cold climate, that means doing all the fun things that come with that like sledding, ice skating, and build-ing snowmen. If you live in a warm climate, don’t be discouraged. Find an indoor skating rink or a fes-tival that creates its own snow. Go play.

4 Have a Christmas Craft Party: Allow the kids to invite their friends over and have a Christmas craft making party. Serve lots of treats and have fun cre-ating items that will last for years to come. Pinterest and eHow offer lots of suggestions on easy crafts for kids to make.

5 Spend Time Serving and Giving Back: In order to keep our perspective in the proper context, we should also spend time serving and giving back to our communities during the holiday season. There are countless ways to do that as a family.

6 Learn About Other Traditions: Folks tend to get uptight about the phrase, “Happy Holidays,” but it’s there for a reason. There is more than one going on this time of year. Spend some time as a family learning the holiday traditions and gaining appre-ciation for other cultures. The more we understand

each other in this world, the more peace we foster–Peace on Earth.

7 Take a One-Tank Trip: Money is tight at Christ-mas for most, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do a little traveling. Research fun events going on in your region and take the family on a short getaway. Nothing creates lifelong memories more than a family trip. Who knows, maybe the world’s tallest snowman is only 2 hours from your house?

8 Cooking and Baking: Who can resist the smell of Christmas cookies baking in the oven filling the house? Get together as a family to cook, bake, and decorate a whole mess of holiday goodies. Be sure to make enough to give some away to friends and family!

9 Go Christmas Caroling: Yes, the stigma is what it is, and yes, some might find you annoying, but most will be blessed and your spirit will be infectious. Is there singing at the North Pole? Yes. So there should be at your house, too. To make it even more fun, get your family to dress in the costume of their favorite Christmas character.

10 Worship Together: What’s the point of all this celebrating if we don’t worship? Attend and partici-pate in worship services throughout the season (and all year). Rejoice in the good news of the newborn King!

Making healthy choices can be difficult. Yet these stag-gering U.S. statistics show why taking care of your health is so important.

• Fifty percent of adults over age 20 have diabetes or prediabetes

• One in three adults has prediabetes

• In seniors, 51% have prediabetes

• In Florida, over six million adults are unaware that they have prediabetes

• Prediabetes often leads to diabetes, the leading cause of new cases of blindness, kidney disease, nerve damage, amputations, and mental health issues

• Prediabetes increases the risk of cancer by 15%

What if you could take a free group class to help you make small lifestyle changes to reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes by 60%? Would you be interested?

Proven Prediabetes Program Helps You Lose WeightThe Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a national lifestyle change program that will teach you how to prevent type 2 diabetes. Because people with predia-betes can reduce their disease risk through modest weight loss, this program focuses on having you lose 5 to 7 percent of your body weight.

Group classes focus on making small changes such as improving food choices, increasing physical activity, and managing stress -- all designed to help you lose weight.

According to the American Psychological Associa-tion, a group approach makes it easier to stick with a weight loss plan. By “joining the club” of DPP, you will find it easier to achieve your goals.

Local Prevention Program to Launch in JanuaryA new Diabetes Prevention Program in Pinellas County will hold its first class on:

Tuesday, January 12, 2016 4 PM to 5 PM

Seminole Recreation Center 9100 113th Street N

Seminole FL

Sixteen (16) free weekly sessions will be held in a group setting on consecutive Tuesdays. You will:• learn the skills to improve food choices, be more

physically active, manage stress, and lose weight;• receive support from a trained Lifestyle Coach;• bond with others who share your goals;• participate in free maintenance classes for six

months.

Even though sixteen weeks is a major commitment, the program benefits have been proven to last. Even after ten years, those who participated in this program had a 34% lower rate of type 2 diabetes, and 40% main-tained their weight loss associated with the risk reduc-tion. (National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse)

This program is sponsored by the Diabetes Empow-erment Foundation, an organization that seeks to lessen the burden of diabetes and prediabetes in every day life. This non-profit provides the support people with diabetes desperately seek, at all stages of their lives. Because the burden of diabetes is magnified in isolation, it is the aim of the organization to make sure that all people living with diabetes and prediabetes feel connected and empowered.

Did you know that the Mexican version of the Tooth Fairy is known as the Tooth Mouse, who takes a tooth and leaves a treasure in its place? Ironically, sometime around 400 BC, the Greek physician Hippocrates suggested a toothpaste made from three mice and the head of a hare to cure a toothache. We doubt that he believed in the Tooth Mouse.

Dental Fun Facts

myth: Orthodontists are appropriate only for the most challenging and com-plex orthodontic problems.

FAcT: Orthodontists recognize the difference between a simple bite prob-lem and the more complex ones. Often what appears to be the routine straight-ening of a crooked tooth, is but the “tip of an iceberg” of a host of problems that need to be corrected. Orthodontists are trained to see “below the surface” of these hidden challenges and prescribe the appropriate treatment.

myth: My family dentist says he can straighten my teeth.

FAcT: An orthodontist is to teeth what a cardiologist is to the heart. Orthodon-tists are highly trained specialists, who after graduating from dental school, go to an additional full time education in an accredited orthodontic residency program that lasts at least two academic years. This specialty training uniquely

qualifies the orthodontist to diagnose, prevent, and treat dental and facial ir-regularities in young children, teens, and adults.

A dentist may care for a handful of mi-nor tooth movement patients each year amid all of the restorative dentistry he/she does. An orthodontist, though trained in restorative dentistry, does only orthodontics and treats hundreds of patients annually.

myth: Any dentist may join the American Association of Orthodontists

FAcT: Only orthodontists may be members of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).

Selecting an orthodontist who is a member of the AAO is your assurance

that you have chosen an orth-odontic specialist who does no other dentistry but that limited to

orthodontics.

Certainly the perceptions and attitudes surrounding braces

have changed. Myths such as those just mentioned have been

dispelled. The facts now support what many who have had orthodon-

tic treatment repeatedly state, “Brac-es were one of the best investments

my parents made for me.”

Planning for Holiday Stress–You’ve Got Thisby Amy Alexander

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us, it’s time to think about your holiday dinner, trimmings, shopping, pie – and everything else the holiday season brings. Although, the holidays are the most wonderful time of the year, some consider it to be the most stressful.

So, in the hustle and bustle, what can you do to stay healthy, stress-free and keep heading towards your fitness goals?

1. Be realistic. Don’t put a tremendous amount of pressure on yourself to make the holidays perfect. Do what you can. Make realistic plans and focus on enjoying time with friends and family. As you celebrate, remember to exercise. Go for a run outside or take a group fitness class at a gym like Lifestyle Family Fitness — working out is a great way to relieve stress. This will keep you on track to reach your goals and give you a nice head start to your fitness resolutions.

2. Organize and budget. Make a list of what you need to do or purchase. Set a budget for yourself and stay within that budget. A lot of stress comes from overextending yourself financially. Start shopping now — you’ll beat the crowds and it’s a great way to get in an extra workout by walking the mall!

3. Exercise and eat healthy. It’s too easy to let every-thing go during the holidays. Ever heard yourself saying, “I’m too busy, I’ll start eating healthy after the New Year.” Between co-workers and family tempting you with candy, pies and other heavenly treats that show up uninvited, you can really pack on the pounds if you’re not careful.

Don’t give in. Why not keep your fitness goals you worked so hard for during the other months?

Indulge in the sweets and treats, but set a limit for yourself and stick to it.

Make a plan, ditch the second trip to the dessert table and stay active to burn excess calories and reduce stress.

After all, the holidays are a time to be thankful, not stressful!

Remember, YOU are important! Take care of yourself, have fun and enjoy the season — and you’ll see the benefits of your hard work and get a head start on reaching your New Year’s Fitness Resolution!

Parents:Put Down Your Phone and Listen

Ever worry that your children spend too much time on their phones and other mobile devices? Well, the odds are pret-ty good that your kids share the same concerns about you.

AVG Technologies recently surveyed more than 6,000 young people (ages 8-13) regarding their parents’ technol-ogy habits, and more than half the re-spondents said their parents check their mobile devices too frequently. One of the biggest complaints involved parents who allow themselves to be distracted by their phones during conversations—a behavior that made many children feel unimportant.

“With our kids picking up mobile de-vices at an increasingly younger age, it is really important that we set good hab-its within the home early on,” says AVG Technologies’ Tony Anscombe. “Chil-dren take their cues from us for every-thing else, so it is only natural that they should do the same with device use.”

How many times does it spread through-out the whole family when one person gets sick? It’s almost an accepted fact of life especially in families with small children. Parents teach kids to wash hands and cough into their elbow, but colds, flus and viruses still attack.

The chance of getting sick is direct-ly tied to the strength of your or your family’s immune system. Children are especially susceptible because their im-mune system is still growing, however adults are more at risk because they may have weakened their immune sys-tem over time.

How is the immune system weak-ened? The #1 enemy of our immune system is sugar, and anything that turns to sugar. The Alternative Health Atlanta website states that, “eating any kind of sugar has the potential to reduce your body’s defenses by 75% or more for four to six hours.” During that time, pathogens (a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease) can invade.

How do you not eat sugar especially during the holidays? Your family’s health will get a real boost if you will substantially reduce the amount of sug-ar you eat and allow your children to eat. Instead choose sweet alternatives like fruit, nuts, or homemade desserts containing honey for the sweetener. You can also introduce Stevia to your family in place of sugar.

How is the immune system boosted? The other way to reduce illnesses is to make the immune system stronger. Some ways to strengthen the immune system are to add probiotics from things like yogurt (without sugar), Keifer (found in the dairy section) or a healthy drink with probiotics like Kevita Brands. Lots of Vitamin C will also help.

Being sick robs you of the energy you need to live life. Next month’s article is on getting it all done easier – it’s not just about time management. It’s about energy management.

Sloppy Joe’sTucked underneath the Bilmar Resort on Treasure Island beach there’s a fun and relaxed restaurant called Sloppy Joe’s that will take you on a mini vaca-tion even if you just stop in for lunch. Featuring a large two-tiered deck (“per-fect for watching the sun set”) and just enough kitsch to know it’s Florida, Sloppy Joe’s has a casual atmosphere with a Key West inspired menu and just enough Caribbean influence to make it interesting.

Sloppy Joe’s has as its predecessor the bar by the same name in Key West.

The bar opened during the Prohibition era. Then Sloppy Joe’s evolved into its locations today that feature the bar, res-taurant, and retail store full of Florida souvenirs. The restaurant is open 365 days a year, so patrons can get their fill of the generous drinks and menu items.

Our crew started with the Conch Fritters (also a nod to Key West), and the pulled pork eggrolls. We’re in agreement; we’d order those eggrolls again and again and be a happily fed family. We’re quite sure there’s something magical in the decid-edly Caribbean pulled pork recipe.

Mom and dad followed with a bowl of lobster bisque. With its rich color and richer flavor, it was a filling bowl that would make a perfect meal to enjoy on the deck at sunset. I highly recom-mend the Bilmar salad with its hearts of palm, macademia nut, mandarin orange combination. Ask for the house recipe balsamic dressing and top it with black-ened grouper - the staff raves about the grouper, and they’re right - it’s deli-cious!

The kiddos were kept entertained with the view, but if they hadn’t been, they loved their take-home blinking plastic cups. If you’re in the mood for a (not-so) serious Florida memorabilia, you might go wild and order one of the signature drinks that come in a giant fish bowl, a carved coconut, or even a special cup with a spray mister, perfect for cooling off on an after-lunch walk on the beach. I was transported to my childhood Florida family vacations and almost forgot we’re now full-time working residents!

Little Sister ordered a pulled pork sand-wich - couldn’t get too much of that sweet and smoky recipe. She was lucky to keep it all to herself! Big brothers tried the fish tacos served with black beans and rice, grilled fish, and avocado tartar sauce, and Big Dave’s chicken sandwich, with grilled chicken topped with bacon and cheddar. Not to be out-done, Dad ordered The Big Sloppy, the house special sloppy joe sandwich with its slow cooked ground beef, peppers, onions and sauce blend. Sloppy Joe’s has a kid’s menu including popcorn shrimp, also, so even your youngest will find something they like.

When you visit Sloppy Joe’s, be sure to save time after your delicious meal for a walk on the beach and enjoy the local scenery - our family was excited to dis-cover a sand sculpture festival happen-ing right outside our window! You can pretend, even just for lunch, that you’re vacationing in Florida for the first time!

4Ice! at Gaylord Palms The Nutcracker

Celebrating its thirteenth year, this popular family experience gives guests a chance to visit a whimsi-cal winter wonderland of interactive environments and larger-than-life, three-dimensional ice monuments and sculptures. The enormous struc-ture used to house ICE! — dubbed “The Florida Fridge” — is cooled to a chilly nine degrees, making it by far the coolest attraction in Florida. In fact, it is so cold, it is necessary for the resort to provide over-sized par-kas for visitors to wear.

This year, see Ma in her kerchief, Pa in his cap and more as the classic hol-iday poem, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, is brought to life in TWO MILLION pounds of hand-carved ice sculptures, including two-story tall ice slides. This awe-inspiring experi-ence concludes with the wonder and majesty of a full Nativity in stunning, crystal clear ice. Christmas in Orlan-do is fun for the entire family at the Gaylord Palms Resort.

If the cold temperatures and amazing ICE! sculptures don’t put you in the Christmas mood, then collect your family and head into the Gaylord Palms resort for some hot cocoa and the two million Christmas lights, 54-foot Christmas tree and daily Christ-mas concerts featuring Luminescence — the amazing acrobatic stage show.

I was talking to a friend of mine this morning whose children are grown and out on their own. My question had to do with whether or not to keep doing one of our annual holiday traditions when it seemed my kids were be-ing pulled to participate in other things, in other directions. “Do not stop your Christ-mas Eve traditions,” she said. “Traditions are so important; you’ll see it more as time goes by. And once you stop them, it’s very diffi-cult to start them again.”

Every family celebrates special holidays in their own way. Christmas Eve is no ex-ception with families incorporating a wide variety of traditions from the sacred to the sentimental. Here are a few of our favorites. Maybe they’ll inspire you to start a new tra-dition this year with the ones you love!

1. Pajama game. In more than a few fami-lies we talked to, each family member is allowed to open just one gift on Christmas Eve. Several of these same families know ex-actly what they’re opening: snuggly Christ-mas pajamas. This traditional kickoff to the giving and receiving of gifts gets everyone set for bed and looking cute for Christmas morning photos.

2. Christmas Eve hot chocolate and Christmas stories. Before your little elves head off to bed, spend part of the evening drinking hot chocolate and sharing Christ-mas stories.

3. Candlelight communion. Many of our families treasure memories of attending a can-dlelight service on Christmas Eve with some even taking communion. While attending

church together is a year-round family staple, there’s something uniquely moving about the dim lighting, the glow of the candles, and the words of the age-old Christmas hymns.

4. Sibling slumber party. The anticipation of Christmas morning can bring together a group of siblings like little else. Some maximize the fun by sleeping together in one room. It’s fun to have someone to whisper to while listening for reindeer hooves on the roof!

5. Caroling the neighborhood. What better way to spread Christmas cheer than to ser-enade the neighbors? Who knows? If you’re good enough, there might be hot cocoa and cookies in it for you!

6. Stuffer scramble. One family reported a hilarious tradition that started on the parents’ first Christmas together: Having just mar-ried 6 days earlier, they realized they had no “stocking stuffers” for one another. In a panic, they set out for Kmart and had only 15 minutes until closing to come up with unique, funny gifts for one another. It was so much fun, they’ve done it every year since—on purpose!

7. A scattered, dashed, covered, and smothered Christmas. If your Christmas Eve service makes a big family meal diffi-cult, you could join the ranks of families who enjoy a holiday meal at Waffle House! It’s one of the few places open on this holiday and makes for a low-stress, budget-friendly meal on the way home. Because nothing says celebration like syrup.

8. Light ‘em up. Light up another family’s Christmas Eve by playing elf. One family we polled does this on their Waffle House stop by secretly paying someone else’s check. Then they leave the restaurant and watch from the car. They love seeing the joy and surprise on the face of the unsuspecting din-ers when they learn it’s “on the house.” You can also light up the night for someone who has to work on Christmas Eve, such as a pharmacist at a 24-hour drugstore or a gas station attendant.

A Gentle HugJust as I opened my laptop to begin typing this article, I received a text from the very birthmother I intended to write about. “Good Afternoon.” she text, followed by a smiley face, and as I read it, I could envision that easy, contagious smile of hers, and I felt myself smiling, too.

When people speak of meeting someone who knows no strang-ers, they are speaking of this birth mom. I met her the first week of October and learned she was due to deliver in just a few short weeks. We sat down together to complete her Social and Medical History forms at the office, and by the time she answered the final question on the form, I knew I loved her. She is young and pretty and sweet, and I learned in that first meeting that smiles were no stranger to her face. She spoke proudly of her two-year-old daughter, who loved Frozen and who shared the same wide smile and bright eyes as her mother. We hugged each other goodbye and planned on meeting again in a few days.

On the day of our second meeting, we talked more about her adoption plan and how she wanted her time in the hospital to go. We made a plan for her to call when she went into labor, no mat-ter the time, and that I would be there for her as little or as much she needed or wanted me to be. That very night I received a call.

Around 3 a.m. in the morning, she delivered a baby girl. Lisa Cuffaro, Destiny Adoption’s Director, had been there with her since midnight. “She rubbed my back whenever my mom needed a break.” she said of Lisa, who I informed the birthmother was well-versed in labor and delivery. I came to visit her first thing the next day after I dropped my boys off at school. I brought her

some sweets to snack on, and we sat and talked for awhile, shar-ing pictures and stories of our kids, until she told me she would like to go visit her BABY GIRL. I wheeled her to the NICU, as she was tender from her C-section. I helped settle her into the chair beside the baby’s hospital bassinet, and place BABY GIRL into her arms. I sat in the chair next to her and admired her admir-ing her baby. We talked about how she was happy she decided to meet the adoptive family and to spend time with BABY GIRL after all, as neither were a part of her original adoption plan. She talked about how sweet and kind and easy to get along the adop-tive family was, and I wondered if she had any clue that she is all of those things, as well. The adoptive family arrived in NICU, and I left the 3 of them to spend alone time together with each other and BABY GIRL. I let the birth mom know I would be back that evening with my sons so we can keep her company over dinner.

With my two boys in tow, I headed back to the hospital to visit the birthmother. I took her dinner order, which consisted of cake

and more cake, and headed for her room. I introduced her to my boys and the four us sat and ate together, talking about everything from Disney princesses to super heroes. My oldest son and her talked about the pros and cons of the Hulk, while my youngest son cuddled up next to her on the hospital bed. By the time we finished eating our dinners, the adoptive family had arrived to say goodnight. They came with updates on how well BABY GIRL was eating and how NICU had no concerns. I took some pictures of the birthmom and adoptive family, one of which my son phot-bombed. The adoptive family said goodnight and ,shortly after, my boys and I prepared to leave for the night, as well. “Gentle hugs.” I told the boys, “because her belly is tender.” Birthmom opened her arms real big. My oldest gave the first hug, but when it was my youngest son’s turn, he didn’t want to let go. He felt as I did the moment I met her…like we had known her for years. I gave her a big hug goodbye and kissed her on the top her head, assuring her I would see her in the morning.

My boys and I loaded up in the car. It was a long day and well passed their bedtime, but as we drove home, I couldn’t think of anywhere else I wanted the three of us to be that evening than there in that hospital room with birthmom. I had known her for 4 days at that point. I loved her by day 1..and by day 4, so did my family.

Do you have room in your heart and home for a waiting child?

Kelci describes herself as being both a good athlete and a good sport. She plans on going on to become a police officer and hopes to have a German Shepherd someday. She enjoys her Language Arts and History classes. She’d like to have the ability to fly, but will settle for becoming famous another way. Between football and gymnastics, singing and acting, and playing guitar, piano, and drums, we expect to be seeing a lot more of Kelci. A Nintendo girl, Mario Kart and Mario Party occupy Kelci’s downtime – what little there is of it! Someday, Kelci will capture the hearts of the world through her many talents. We know she will capture the heart of her forever family first!

Kelci Born on 4/21/2001

Joshua & Kiara Born on 7/25/2006 & 6/7/2005This active and outgoing duo wants a family that is nice!

If Joshua could change the world, he’d make it so that every park had to have swing sets. Sweet and caring, Joshua likes to help with the groceries and wants to grow up to be like Handy Manny. Joshua loves hamburgers, but keeps away from carrots. Joshua wants you to know how funny he is and that he is a handstand champion!

Kiara describes herself as amazing and we’d have to agree. She loves hanging upside down, doing handstands and cartwheels, climbing, and rolling down hills. When she’s still, she’s probably playing a board game or painting. Music makes Kiara happy – she’s a Justin Bieber “Belieber” at heart. If she could have a pet, she’d like a mermaid, cheetah, monkey or dolphin, but she will settle for a puppy or a kitten.

The next day, we loaded up her belongings and headed to her home. I hugged her goodbye knowing it wasn’t goodbye at all. And I sit here now in gratitude for having met this birthmom just a few short weeks ago, who’s smile, even via text, makes me feel like I have known her all along.

Can you remember when we had pas-senger trains here in Pinellas County? It was a different world then and it cer-tainly changed when The Pinellas Trail was created back in December, 1990. It was a brand new concept for the Tampa Bay region, having a “rail-to-trail” cor-ridor from John Taylor County Park in Largo to Seminole City Hall Park. The first “five mile connection” would be-come the “inital link” to the countywide “linear park” known to residents and visitors as The Pinellas Trail. Today, over 80,000 trail users are on the trail

for both recreation and transportation each month. The Trail has been recog-nized in the National Rails-To-Trails Conservancy’s “Hall of Fame.”

On Saturday, December 5, 2015, Pi-nellas County will be celebrating the Trail’s 25th Anniversary. It will be a day when everyone is invited to “Get On The Trail” and enjoy walking, jog-ging, skating and bicycling from Tar-pon Springs to St. Petersburg. There will be a ceremony held at John Taylor Park in Largo, beginning at 10:00 am

and concluding with a rib-bon cutting at the end of the ceremony.

Pinellas Trails, Inc. is a 501-c-3 organization that has successfully promoted The Pinellas Trail in their public/private partnership

for over two decades. PTI is hosting this celebration event and raises the private funds for the amenities, additional landscaping along the Trail and supports the volunteer, auxiliary ranger program for the Trail. In 2000, Fred E. Marquis (the former, county administrator and trail advocate who supported the trail’s creation) was honored with the “re-naming of the Trail.” Mr. Marquis has volunteered as an Auxiliary Ranger. If you would you like to join him? Visit www.pinellastrails.org.

1 Be compassionate. You want to celebrate the holidays with your grandchildren and your adult children because you love them. Complaining and

competing with other family members are not acts of love. Your sons and daughters and their spouses are un-der a lot of pressure to make everyone happy; cut them some slack.

2 Be flexible. Turkey can be just as tender and juicy — or miserably dried out — on the days before or after Christmas as it is on the 25th. The

point is to spend time with your family. Your grandkids will not be awarding extra points to the grandparents who are with them on The Actual Day.

3 Divide and conquer. Separate celebrations are the smart way to go, if at all possible, especially for grandparents who live far away or otherwise

don’t get to see their grandchildren very often. What’s more, separate events are generally the only way to go in families where the adult children — or the grandparents — are divorced. Remember, it’s the time you spend together that counts, not the date on the calendar.

4 Establish rituals. When the kids come to love your New Year’s Day Monopoly marathon you may not feel so bad that they were elsewhere on

Christmas Eve, and you won’t have to enter into fresh negotiations every year. Just think of all the time you’ll free up for other activities — or worries — if you no longer spend months obsessing over the holidays.

5 Let go. Even if you don’t win the holiday sweep-stakes, graciously accept what’s offered — and immediately start making plans to spend quality

time with your grandchildren at other times of the year. Amazing things are possible between January and No-vember. Bastille Day, anyone?

Q: I feel like I’m fighting an uphill battle with my kids when it comes to entitlement, and Christmas only makes things worse. A season I once cher-ished has become something I look forward to as much as a root canal. Any advice?

Jim: I think there are many parents who share your frustration. In fact, your situation reminds me of a family featured on “Good Morning America” last year.

When John and Lisa Henderson grew concerned over the entitled attitudes their three boys were exhibiting, they came up with a radical remedy. They decided to “cancel” Christmas. No Santa. No stockings. No presents.

“We have not canceled putting up decorations,

celebrating the birth of our Savior or any of our other heartwarming traditions,” Lisa wrote in a blog post.

After months of working with their boys to help them curb a growing sense of entitlement, Lisa said she and her husband decided to take the money they would’ve spent on gifts and instead “put it toward service projects and giving gifts to others.”

The parents’ goal for their kids, Lisa explained, was to “teach them the pleasure of giving, rather than continuing to feed their desire for more.”

The boys cried when they learned the news, but as Lisa shared, they soon bought in by “making gifts for each other ... They are learning exactly what we wanted them to learn ... They are thinking of others.”

The irony of ironies is that the Hendersons didn’t really cancel Christmas at all. Rather, by re-emphasizing the importance of expressing love to one another and exhibiting a spirit of generosity, they recaptured its true meaning.

While you and your family may not require such “drastic” measures, I’d encourage you to cultivate a similar spirit of selflessness this Christmas. If you do, you’ll pass on the wonder of the season to your children and help them discover a kind of Christmas that can never be canceled.

Q: How can I teach my children good manners? This is something I’m determined to instill in my kids, but it’s not easy. How do I teach them to treat people respectfully when the rest of the culture seems to care less and less for the feelings, sensibilities and rights of others?

Jim: Manners and etiquette are often conceived of in terms of conformity to a set of social mores or culturally defined standards of “correct” behavior (think Emily Post or Miss Manners). From this point of view, they’re an aspect of manmade custom and tradition. For people of faith, however, good man-ners should spring from something deeper such as the Golden Rule and the Great Commandment: “Just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise,” and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

What does this love look like in action? Practically speaking, it can find expression in any number of ways. Everything depends on the situation, attitude and expectation of the person on the receiving end. If Grandma expects Johnny to keep his napkin in his lap and his elbows off the dinner table, Johnny should be taught to comply. If your neighbor prefers that visi-

tors remove their shoes before coming inside, you ought to honor his wishes. Ultimately, it all comes down to caring for and putting others first.

How do you teach your kids to implement these prin-ciples in everyday life? The answer is simple: You model this kind of behavior yourself. Kindness, good manners and respectful treatment of others are best instilled in young minds through consistent example. They are caught more so than taught. Keep in mind that you can’t begin too early, and that the best place to start is at home.

Q: Somehow our family has fallen into a pattern of needing to “top” the previous holiday season. My kids seem to expect a bigger and better Christmas, and it always falls on me to make it happen. Frank-ly, I don’t have the energy. Can you help me out?

Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: There are plenty of us who know exactly what you’re talking about. It seems our culture is trending away from the simple and toward the extravagant in almost every area of life. Outrageous birthday parties, theatrical marriage proposals, grandiose weddings and over-the-top events of all kinds have become the norm. As you’ve experienced, it’s an unhealthy expectation that creates a lot of unnecessary stress. When it comes to Christmas, I believe there’s a better way.

You can enrich your family’s experience of the Christmas season by looking for ways to maximize everyday moments. It’s a principle I’ve often applied

with Jim Daly

to the challenge of building a stronger marriage, but it can also be used to lessen holiday stress and strain as well.

Instead of staging a “Celebration to End All Celebrations,” try introduc-ing Christmas into the little things you do each day during December. For in-stance, keep a batch of holiday cook-ies on hand and pack them in each child’s lunch when you send them off to school. Get your ornaments down from the attic early and involve every-

one in sorting them out. Put up one new decoration every day from your assort-ment of family favorites. Play Christ-mas music at mealtimes or before bed. Take advantage of small opportunities to share Christmas memories or talk about what the holiday season means to you. There are endless ways to give every day a creative Yuletide twist.

Try it and I guarantee you’ll like it. In fact, you may never have a big holiday blowout again!

Q: Can you tell me what it means to “honor” a parent who has become increasingly cranky, feisty, disagree-able and demanding as a result of Alzheimer’s disease and the aging process? My mom was once a sweet, caring and soft-spoken woman, but all that has changed dramatically over the past few years.

Jim: There’s no doubt about it—caring for an aging loved one involves sacrifice and self-discipline, especially in situations like yours.

We should begin, then, by defining “honor.” Honor implies choosing to give great respect and care to our el-ders—not grudgingly, but from a principle of love and out of genuine concern for their needs. True honor is placing the highest value on our loved ones, regardless of whether they de-serve it or not.

Once you’ve made this choice, the key issue is knowing how to carry it out. The biblical commandment to “Honor

your father and mother” doesn’t men-tion specifics. It has nothing to say about nursing homes, pensions or Medicare. Nor does it obligate you to take aging parents into your home.

Instead, the art of honoring a cranky elder is based on intuitive knowledge. That knowledge, in turn, is rooted in your love for and commitment to your mother. Out of that commitment and your day-to-day interactions with her will grow an awareness of practi-cal ways you can serve her and care for her immediate needs. This might mean sharing your home and offering financial support. It could also involve seeking support services, filling out endless health insurance forms, pro-viding transportation and communi-cating with doctors.

Finally, remember that it’s never too late—or too soon—to love and honor your elders. As you seek to honor your mother, your love for her will grow and your relationship with her will be enriched.

We’ve all paid the “stupid tax,” making costly decisions with zeros on the end. And a lot of those decisions hap-pen when we’re caught up in the emotion of the Christ-mas season and procrastinate a little too long. Make this year different than before!

Here are the top 10 Christmas shopping mistakes and how you can act differently:

1 Not prioritizing. Instead of getting stressed out with all the parties, baking and shopping in addition to your normal daily life, set some priorities before you’re bombarded with a million requests. Think about what things are “must do” and which are “would be nice to do.” It’s all right to say no to keep yourself sane. Shop-ping for gifts is more fun when you’re not completely stressed out.

2 Not having a budget written down. Before you make a gift list and head to the mall, set aside a reasonable amount of money for gifts. Make a commitment that you won’t add $20 to the fund just because you saw some-thing cute that your niece would love.

3 Using credit cards. Once you have your budgeted amount of money, stay away from credit cards! You will still spend 12-18% more if you use plas-tic and you’ll be paying it off come next year! Doesn’t paying with cash and going on about your day sound more relaxing than having a credit card balance looming over your head through the holidays? You betcha.

4 Buying for everyone. Do you really need to buy gifts for every family member and friend you

have? That can get overwhelming and expensive for everyone. Talk with them about this and work toward an agreement to draw names for gifts or donate money to a common cause.

5 Not listening. Listen to the hints your loved ones drop about what they need or want this year. Maybe your Aunt Sally mentioned in July that she would love someone to help her in the garden or cousin Bob keeps losing guitar picks. A thoughtful gift like this will mean a lot to the person.

6 Not having a thought-out list on paper. If you think you can spend time in “Christmas retail world” and not get distracted by all the shiny toys, you’re in for a big surprise! You’ll be more likely to buy impul-sively if you do it that way. Write down what each person you’re buying for would like and stick to the list. Stay focused!

7 Not shopping around. “Shopping around” doesn’t mean you have to spend 24 extra hours running from store to store to save 10 cents. Take a look at your gift list and do some comparative price-checking online before you head out into the retail and traffic madness. This will save you money, time and stress!

8 Waiting until the last minute. Giving the gift of procrastination is not the most appealing gift out there. Don’t find yourself stressed out on Christmas Eve just because you didn’t invest a little bit of time to plan.

9 Forgetting to plan for next year. Be on the lookout for outrageous sales on things your loved ones will need throughout the next year. If you time the sales just right and clip some coupons, you could land a major discount on something you were going to buy in a few months for a birthday or wedding gift. Re-member to have a list and budget for this, too.

10 Forgetting why we celebrate. If this season becomes all about shopping and

gifts, you’ve missed the whole point. People—not things—matter. The miraculous birth of a

baby who changed the world is what matters.Used with permission from www.DaveRamsey.com

Savings MadeSweet

I don’t know about you, but I just love the thrill of

the hunt when it comes to shop-ping! I especially love to shop af-ter Christmas – as you can really find some great deals. I actually prefer shopping after Christmas instead of Black Friday as the discounts seem to be even better! Plus, if you have received gift

cards for Christmas gifts, you can usually score big!

Here are some tips to remember when shopping those after Christmas sales:

Stock up on Holiday Supplies for next year.Never pay full price for items like Holiday wrapping paper, bows, labels, etc… Wait to purchase these items after Christmas when they can be discounted as much as 75-90% off then stock up for the following year.

Use coupons on clearance items. This is actually a tip to use all year long, but it is es-pecially nice during after-holiday sales. Items like holiday cookies, coffees, candies and cake mixes will be clearanced at drastically low prices. If you have a coupon for those items, many times you will walk away with them for Free or very inexpensive. Get your coupons ready now so that you will be prepared!

This tip is especially helpful if you are a fan of all the holiday coffees and teas. stock up so you can enjoy them all year long!

Check out Holiday Gift Sets. After Christmas is definitely the time to stock up on birthday gifts or items to add to your gift stockpile. Stores like Walmart and Target carry gift sets in the Health & Beauty Section filled with things like ra-zors, body wash and more that you can use a coupon on. I have purchased many nice gift sets this way for very inexpensive.

Check out the clearance section. While I realize that this can be a broad topic, do be sure to check out the clearance section in every department at the store. Items like Christmas pajamas, clothing, socks, etc… can often be purchased for very little and you will be prepared for the following year!

Have fun shopping and I hope that you find some sweet deals!
