Ken Doria - Bill Cameron

O U T L O O K The 1970 Commodores, hoping to improve on their

Divisional Championship, and an overall record of 25-13, seem to have their work cut out for them. Graduation, grades, and signings have hurt the 1970 Commodores with only three regulars. Ken Doria, Dave Nichols, and Bill Cameron, returning. Gone from the pitching stafi are Wayne Garland, Pete Poldiak, and Sonny Burkhalter. The Commodores face perhaps their toughest and largest schedule in years with such powerhouses as Manatee Junior College (Florida State Champions), South Georgia (Regional State Champions), and a number of perennial strong > four-year schools.

The hitting and defense should be more than adequate. The 1970 Commodores' strong suit could be in the depth at each position. With at least two boys fighting for each position, this competition should create a healthy situation. It is the Commodores mound staff that seems in question. Returnees Bruce Kombrinck and Barry McQueen must shoulder the load until freshmen twirlers come a-round. Our overall team speed seems to be about average. The squad showed great improvement throughout fall practice and schedule and this desire and hard work has carried over into our off-season weight program. A continuation of this dedication could produce a fine ball club in the tradition of Gulf Coast baseball.

Coach Bill Frazier

RESUME OF FRAZIER

A native of EUwood City, Pa., Bill Frazier came to Gulf Coast in 1968 after a five-year coaching stint at Norwood High School in Pennsylvania, where he chalked up an overall 75-25 record and grabbed two league championships. His first season at Gulf Coast produced a 25-12 record and a division championship.

An extremely affable baseball tutor, both on and off the field, Frazier likes to schedule the toughest competition available. He treats his athletes like men, and he expects them to act accordingly.

A three-sport varsity athlete in high school and college, Frazier earned his Bachelor's Degree from Marietta College and his Master's Degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati. Prior to entering education, he played professional baseball with the New York Yankee's minor league organization.

1 RAY BAKER — A graduate of Clyde High School in Clyde, Ohio, where he was an all-around athlete, Ray proved to be one of the Commodores pleasant siu-pris-es this Fall. Showing a good live fastball and a better than average curve, it is easy to see why this young man was 27 and 8 in three years of high school ball. He played his high school baseball for Coach Weldon Rettig.

ALAN BENSE — A graduate of Rutherford High School in Panama City, Fla., Alan showed this Pall the ability to hit the long ball but needs work on his play a-round first base. He will get a good shot as a starter since he is one of the squad's few left handed swingers. Al's coach in high school was Wayne Boyd.

KEN BISHOP — A graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, Ala., Ken is a transfer student and must overcome a year's absence from the game. He shows great power from the port side but must be more consistant in making contact to hold down the first base slot. Ken is a product ot Coach Pete Lee.

LARRY BRYANT — A graduate of Sandy Springs High School in Atlanta, Ga., this young right bander needs only to learn to move his fastball around and this, coupled with his fine curve, will make him a welcomed addition to our staff. Larry played his high school ball for Coach Chester Norris.

i ^̂1

BOB BUNTIN — A graduate of Ash-ford High School in Ashford, Ala., Bob does an excellent job of roaming the outfield and displays one of the finer arms on the squad, but must greatly improve at the plate to be a starter. Bob's high school coach was Wayne LeCroz.

BILL CAMERON — A graduate of Johnstown High School in Johnstown, Pa., Bill has been elected co-captain by his teammates for the '70 season. Coming off an outstanding freshman year when he hit .330 and drove in 20 runs. Bill will definitely figure to be one of the Commodores' offensive weapons. Add to this his stellar outfield play and ability to be a leader, and you present a fine prospect for a big time college or pro team. Bill played his high school ball for Coach Francis Mahalic.

TOM CARNES — A graduate of Walker High School in Atlanta, Ga., this boy is perhaps our best glove man of the in-fielders. Coming to us as a third baseman because of his arm and glove, he is being moved to SS. With more experience and confidence in his bat, Tom should see much action for the Commodores. Coach Belford was the tutor of this Atlanta product.

KEN DORIA — A graduate of Wolfson High School in Jacksonville, Fla., Ken has been elected co-captain of the '70 Commodores. A real hustler and leader, he won the "Golden Glove Award" last year with only three errors at the hot-spot. Add a .300 batting average, 20 RBI's, 16 extra base hits to the above and this Commodore third sacker seems to have all the tools to make it big. Ken played high school ball under coach Monty Crook.

BRUCE KOMBRINCK — A graduate of Roger Bacon High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, Bruce posted a 5 and 2 record and an impressive 1.00 era last year as a freshman. Possessing an outstanding curveball, this lefty came on strong at the close of the season to become the Commodore's number one stopper. With a year of experience, he will move to the number one spot among our hurlers this year. His high school coach was Ken Haupt.

HARDY LAVENDER — A graduate of Father Ryan High School in Nashville, Tenn., Hardy will make Gulf Coast's defense even stronger up the middle. Not only does he possess all the tools essential for being a good catcher, but his forte just might be his bat. He makes consistant contact at the plate and could prove to be one big offense threats for the Commodores this spring. He played his high school ball for coach James Donnelly.

BARRY McQUEEN — A graduate of Garret High School in Charleston, S. C , Barry posted a 4-4 record and an E.R.A. of 1.2, Barry figures prominently in the Commodores' mound staff this spring. A victim of poor support last year, Barry c.'ime on strong at the end of the year and should settle down into a fine pitching prospect. His high school coach was Il.irold Dimlap.

MIKE NEWMAN — A graduate of Sandy Springs High School in Atlanta, Ga., Mike played his high school ball under Chester Norris. Mike possesses a good fast ball but must get it to move more. This fall proved to be an experimental period as Mike changed his delivery to more of a side-arm motion than overhand. With a little early season experience and confidence, he will be a wirmer for the Commodores.

^ . m DAVE NICHOLS — A graduate of Wolf-son High School in Jacksonville, Fla., Dave played under Coach Monty Crook. Because of his over-all ability, Dave may see some action in the outfield as well as SS. Dave hit 280 with four home runs last year and did an outstanding job. This year he must get off to a quicker start with the bat. A summer in the Basin League should help him greatly.

w JERRY REASONOVER — A graduate of Glencliff High School in Nashville, Teim., Jerry is a transfer from Tennessee Tech. where he hit .370 as a member of their varsity. He hits to all fields with good power and should prove to be one of our more consistent hitters. Possessing a good glove with an outstanding arm, Jerry will

^ be getting a good look from the scouts J this spring. He played his high school

ball for Coach Lynn Alexander.

PAT RENFRO — A graduate ot Redbank High School in Chattanooga, Tenn., Pat played his high school ball for Ted Mill-shaps. Pat could give the Commodores that constant home run threat this year. He is the biggest of the Commodores, but is one of the quickest. His versitility

^enables him to play the outfield, first base or pitch. Once he begins to make more consistent contact, Pat should begin to threaten long-ball records of the Commodores. His arm ranks perhaps as the best of the squad.

AL RYAN — A graduate of De La Salle High School in New Orleans, La., AI has perhaps the greatest range of our infielders. His quick hands and snap throw makes him a natural for the pivot position. At the plate he is very consistent, striking out very little. He has speed and must learn to drag the ball to build a good average. Al played his high school ball for Coach John Altobello.

VIC SHAREK — A graduate of Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, Pa., Vic played for coach Bill Spellman. Having perhaps the quickest bat on the squad, we are going to have to find a spot for him. A sound third basenian, Vic must improve his overall speed on the base paths. Vic had an outstanding fall practice and it should prove to be a great battle at third between he and Etoria with one having to move to another position.

PETE SHEELER — A graduate of Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, Pa., Pete shows great promise as one of our better outfielders. Having one of the better arms on the squad and perhaps the most accurate, he will get a good shot at one of the outfield spots. Being a left-handed swinger also will enhance his chances. He must develop a quicker bat, but this should come with more playing experience. He played his high school ball for Coach Bill Spellman and for whom he hit .38S.

MIKE SHEETS — A graduate of Penia-cola High School in Pensacola, Fla., Mike is very sound fundamentally. He saw limited action lest year and batted ,220 with 4 RBI's, however, each RBI counted for a Commodore win. He again proved to be Mr, Clutch this fall m ht personally accounted for two Gulf Coast wins, Mike needs to cut down on his strikeouts to become a regular and showed much im-

grovanent in this area this fall. His Igh school coach was Frank Slusser,

MARK SPELLMAN — A graduate of Lincoln High School in Ellwood, Pa., Mark played his high school ball for his father. Coach Bill Spellman. Mark was not with us for fall practice, so we are unable to judge his ability at this time. However his high school credentials are impressive since he pitched for a club that either won or finished in the state finals each of the four years he played.

DAVE TIPTON — A graduate of John Carroll High School in Birmingham, Ala., Dave played under Coach John Harris, Jr. An all-around athlete at John Carroll, Dave comes to us with the ability to play many positions well. Voted the M.V.P. of the Alabama All-Star Game, Dave will do double duty for us a pitcher and outdo double duty for us as a pitcher and outfielder. He was very impressive in relief duty this fall because of his ability to throw strikes and to keep the ball down.

BILL WEBER — A graduate of Dale High School in Dale, Ind., Bill will give us additional strength behind the plate. Ineligible last year. Bill has a summer of AAABA ball tmder his belt and will give us a strong one-two punch behind the plate. Bill's hustle and desire, along with an accurate and quick arm, are his main attributes. He played his high school ball for Pat Arnold.

FUED YORK — A graduate of Rutherford High School in Panama City, Fla., Fred has much versatility and can do the job at the plate, in the outfield and off the rubber. Fred played his high ."K-hool ball for Coach Wayne Boyd. He hav good power and speed and because of his ability, will be moved around a grrat deal early in the season. As a pitcher, Fred must improve by moving the ball around more.
