Hello all!My name is Allison Woodham and I am the new editor

for Gulf Coast Buzz. I am very excited to take on this role along with Baldwin People. I was born and raised in Baldwin County, and I look forward to sharing with you the fun, food and entertainment our county has to offer.

For the athletes, the Brett-Robinson Alabama Coastal Triathlon is Sept. 6. Get your family involved with fall sports, like football, with Eric’s Family Fun column. LA Songwriters Festivalcelebrates 10 years

line-upT his year marks the 10th year for the LA Songwriters Festival

in Fairhope, and organizers say they hope it will be one of the best yet.

“We have covered some ground with writers from Nashville, southwest Florida, Louisianna, Mississippi and right here in South Baldwin County,” organizer Charles Davis said. “Among the talent that has passed through are writers who have had their songs recorded by The Oak Ridge Boys, Hank Williams Jr., Sammy Kershaw, Kenny Chesney, Deanna White, Jason Biggs and Randy Travis. So many people never get an opportunity to listen to the creator of the songs. This is the perfect venue to see that with over 35 songwriters gathered for three nights, on one stage, in one location.”

Original songwriters from the Eastern Shore, Lower Ala-bama, Nashville and beyond are participating in this exciting three day event at the American Legion on beautiful Mobile Bay, so come and catch the music.

I must confess I have a weakness for Rita Mae Brown’s “Mrs. Murphy”

mystery series. My fresh-man year of high school, a family friend gave me two of her first books as a Christmas present and I’ve been hooked since.

The murder mystery se-ries, set in idyllic Crozet, Va., centers around Mary

Minor “Harry” Haristeen and her pets — the brave cat Mrs. Murphy, the last gray cat Pewter and rough and tumble corgi Tee Tuck-er. The reader can enjoy the animals’ lively conversa-tions with one another, even if the characters in the tale can’t.

Like usual for a “Mrs. Murphy” book, murder and dark secrets long forgotten have once again found their way to the sleepy town, and it’s up to Harry and her pets to get to the bottom of the goings-on.

It may not be high lit-erature, but it’s the sort of book that never fails to lift my spirits. Delightful char-acters, a good pace and talk-ing animals — who could ask for anything more?

Swim, bike and run at the beach

sion (GSOBSC), the city of Gulf Shores and The Hangout, invites triathletes from near and far to participate in the Alabama Coastal Triathlon or “Tri-It-On” triathlon. The scenic events will take off from The Hangout in Gulf Shores at 6:30 a.m. for the “Tri-It-On” racers followed by a 7 a.m. start for those taking on the triathlon challenge.

As part of the Best of the U.S. Amateur Triathlete Championship, the course proves to be both beautiful and challenging. “Brett-Robinson is delighted to sponsor an event that embodies the spirit of serious competition, personal challenges and even first-timers,” said Bill Brett, vice president of Brett-Robinson. “The Team Magic orga-nization coupled with the Gulf Shores venue makes this the ideal event for all walks of life.”

“Volunteers are the backbone of any event in our com-

munities, and the triathlon is no different,” said Beth Gendler, vice president of sales for the GSOBSC. “We humbly ask our local heroes to come together and help the triathlon go off without a hitch!”

Packet pick-up for both races will take place at The Hangout on Friday, Sept. 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 5 to 6 a.m. Following the races, participants may continue the fun at The Hangout for food and beverages as well as an awards ceremony from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The bulls are coming back for a second go-round at the legend-ary Flora-Bama as Bulls on the

Beach returns.“We are very blessed to be return-

ing to this great venue,” said Rob-ertsdale native Cody Harris, event creator and one of its organizers. “Not everybody can host an event like this and I think it’s a big deal that during their 50th anniversary celebration, the Flora-Bama will be part of giving away a gold buckle to the winner.”

This year’s event will kick off on Thursday, Sept. 11 with a pair events for the sponsors, Harris said, including a fishing trip at the Yacht Club at the Flora-Bama, followed by a black-tie dinner with the proceeds benefitting St. Jude Children’s Re-search Hospital.

Cowboys from Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Washington state and Colo-

rado, among others will participate in the competition and preview events, he said.

On Friday night, a special concert featuring country music legend Sam-my Kershaw will be held beginning at 8 p.m. at the Flora-Bama.

Several other events will be held on Friday, including a return of the mechanical bull riding bikini contest and public mechanical bull riding.

High school football, especially where we live, is a great way to get your family involved in the community. Every Friday night you can see your neighbors, your pastor, your city council mem-bers and your schoolmates cheering for your hometown team. You might even see a great football game as well. The ticket prices are low, and food is affordable compared to high-priced college football games.

T he Gulf Coast Arts Alliance Art Gallery will begin a series of dance lessons in the South

Gallery beginning this fall. Classes will be held every Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. East Coast Swing, Foxtrot, Merengue, Mambo, Cha Cha, Rum-ba, Shag, Hustle, Waltz and Tango are dances that will be taught.

Singles are welcome, as are begin-ners, intermediate and advanced students.

Instructors for Dance Night at the Gallery are Jason and Eliza Huskey of the Gulf Coast Ballroom Dance Club. Jason Huskey received his early classic ballroom training through the nationally acclaimed Fred Astaire Ballroom Dance cur-riculum. After receiving numer-ous certificates, he began teaching professionally at the Fred Astaire Franchise Dance Studio in Mobile.

Eliza Huskey, a native of Ala-bama, is a second-generation ball-room dancer. She received early training from her parents who have a combined training of nearly 30 years in the Arthur Murray and

DanceSport curriculums. Eliza be-gan teaching professionally in the 1990s at the David Minor DanceS-port Ballroom in Mobile.

Jason and Eliza have been danc-ing together and teaching ballroom dancing for more than 14 years. Together, they have received years of world-class international ball-room style competitive training from Icelandic coaches and World DanceSport Federation adjudica-tors, Niels Einarsson and Rakel Gudmundsdottir. With their years of diverse training and their love of dance, Jason and Eliza continue to share the magic of ballroom through teaching others across the

M y husband and I acci-dentally went to Thyme. by the Bay recently. We

had a Groupon for another Fairhope restaurant that was closed that night, and after driving 20 minutes from Loxley, we weren't about to turn around and eat at home. So we walked to the tiny restaurant from downtown, sat down outside and were greeted by our friendly server, who told us all about the brand-new menu that happened to be debuting

that night. We love to eat at nice res-

taurants, but because of our quest to pay off our stu-dent loans, we reserve these nights for extremely special occasions — not random Wednesday nights. So after glancing at the menu, which featured mouthwatering op-tions like shrimp and grits with truffled red wine sauce, we quickly began plotting about ordering appetizers and then going home to “eat,” requiring an insane level of self-control.

What happened next was a magical night of great service, small plates, wine and a new tradition.

We split a glass of red wine (yes, y’all, we are that disci-plined), ordered two incredible small plates (“appetizers” would be an insult) and left with full bellies and only $35 out of our pockets.

I had the butternut squash soup with grilled bread. This soup was rich and creamy with bursts of sweetness when my spoon found one of the roasted apples as well as to-die-for savory bites that accompanied Thyme's famous homemade

bacon and spiced pecans. With the bread, this soup was more than enough for a weeknight dinner.

Scott ordered the mussels, which were bathed in a broth of amber beer, cream, honey, sausage and mustard and served with grilled ciabatta bread. Again — surprisingly filling and a joy to eat.

So the moral of this story: Don’t miss out on dining at amazing restaurants like Thyme. by the Bay because you can't go all out and order the most expensive items on the menu (although we will definitely be returning for one of those special occasion dinners). These chefs put their hearts and souls in to everything they serve, ensuring an excellent experience no matter how much or how little you order.

Fellow foodies: I've got a book you must read. It’s called “Bread & Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table” by Shauna Niequist, and it’s a beautiful book about food, family and real life. I just love her style of hospitality and the recipes she includes in the book, like this one for white bean soup. I've adjusted it just a little (she calls for prosciutto and I'm letting you know it would be just fine to use bacon instead, although prosciutto is divine).

Please add this book to your reading list, and definitely give this recipe a try. It’s the first time I’ve ever used fennel, and I was pleased with the results. I can’t wait to explore more recipes with that ingredient. Enjoy!

White bean soup START To FINISh: 1 hour Serves 6 to 8

Soup n 2 shallots, slicedn 1/2 pound carrots,

sliced into coins on a diagonaln 1 bulb fennel, slicedn 4 celery ribs, sliced on

a diagonal n 6 cans white beans in liquid

(cannellini or great northern beans)n Salt and pepper to taste Vinaigretten 1 tablespoon dijon mustard n 1/8 cup balsamic vinegar n 1/4 cup olive oil Garnish n Crispy prosciutto or bacon, crumbled n Parmesan cheese n 1 tablespoon rosemary, chopped (optional)

PreparationIn a stockpot or dutch oven, soften the

shallots in olive oil over medium heat. Add carrots, fennel and celery, and

allow to soften, 10 to 15 minutes. Add beans in their liquid and chopped

rosemary. Cover and cook for 20 minutes at a gentle boil.

Taste, add salt and pepper, taste again. Keep in mind the toppings will be salty.

Cook for an additional 20 minutes, or longer if you have time.

Off heat, mash with a potato masher or the back of a wooden spoon for a chunky texture. If you'd like a smoother texture, run it through a food processor or use an immersion blender. Vinaigrette

Mix dijon, balsamic, olive oil and some salt and pepper in a glass jar with a lid. Shake well. Adjust to taste.

Serve soup with a small pitcher of vinaigrette and bowls of prosciutto or bacon, Parmesan and rosemary.

If you like cool wheels, hot wings and pretty things while helping to raise money for a good cause, then the PZK Hall is the place to be on Saturday, Sept. 13.The event, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will

feature a car and motorcycle show hosted by the Gear Jam-mers and Mardi Gras MG British car clubs, along with a hot wing eating contest and arts and crafts festival.

All proceeds will benefit Under His Wings, a Christian home in Baldwin County for young girls in crisis.

More than 30 prizes will be handed out during the event with presentations on or before 3 p.m. Registration will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on the day of the event. Cost is $20 for the first vehicle and $10 for each additional vehicle.

Proceeds from this event will go toward funding of pri-vate home-school education for the residents, Michal said, with the goal of raising about $6,000.

If you’ve checked out the craft beer section in any retail store, you’ve seen at least a couple examples of

a style called IPA or India Pale Ale. The American craft beer community has fully embraced this style, to the extent that we consider the American IPA a distinct style.

The history of beer is rich with cultural and politi-cal impact. The IPA is a prime example. First brewed by the British dating to the early 1800s, IPA was exported to India. If you recall, India was a British colony until 1947. So there were lots of people in India who wanted beer. There was a problem — beer has a shelf life.

Knowing that hops and alcohol will help beer stay fresh on the long journey from England to India, brewers exporting their beer relied on these methods to deliver a good product. The alcohol content was slightly higher than average, but the hop additions were significantly increased. The style became popu-

lar then, but the modern craft beer movement has taken it to another level.

A good IPA is a lighter color; think golden to gold-brown. Expect an ABV in the 5 – 7 percent range. Hoppy aroma and bitterness dominates with just enough malt to support the acidity of the hops.

My favorite IPA is Deschutes Brewery’s Fresh Squeezed IPA. It’s absolutely juicy with citrusy hop flavor. Unfortunately the closest place one can find this beer is the nation of Texas. But thankfully Stone Brewing Company’s IPA is now available, which is outstanding too.

Youth soccer teams from around the country will descend on Foley for the newly renamed

Publix Super Cup — where 200 boys and girls soccer teams will compete for the coveted championship and bragging rights for the next year.

Started in 2007 as the Flora-Bama Showcase, the event has steadily grown into a family-friendly show-case that highlights the skills and talents of young players from around south Alabama and other states alike.

The tournament will be spread across facilities in Foley, Orange Beach and Perdido Key; and event organizers say they hope this year's match will be the largest one yet.

“Every year, this event has contin-ued to grow as it brings thousands of kids and parents to our Gulf Coast region,” Fred Garth of Snap Soccer said. Snap Soccer manages the event.

The multi-city event will be held on back-to-back weekends — start-ing with the boys' tournament and ending with the girls.
