A s a part of its Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, Smt. Laxmiben & Shri Chimanlal Mehta Arts College is proud to host the 49th National and 18th International Conference of Indian Academy of Applied Psychology (IAAP) from March 1 to 3, 2014. The main theme of the conference is “Psychology for Holistic Living in Global World”. The conference has received an overwhelming response from academicians and students and about 850 delegates from 16 states across the country and 4 countries across the globe have participated in this mega event. About 585 research papers will be presented here. The highlights of this conference are three special guest lectures on the emerging fields of psychology- Forensic Psychology, Military Psychology and Railway Psychology. The inaugural ceremony was held at Gujarat University Convention Hall. Shri Sudhir Nanavati, Executive Vice-President, GLS welcomed the dignitaries and the participants and expressed his pleasure in the organizing of such a gala event. He said, “Every achievement starts with a dream”. He also informed everyone present about educational achievements of GLS. He further felicitated the newly appointed Vice- Chancellor Dr. M.N. Patel. The Vice-Chancellor Dr. M.N. Patel congratulated GLS and L & C Mehta Arts College for hosting such an impressive event and expressed his joy to be a part of it as his first official academic function. Brig. Kartar Singh, Pro-VC, University of Patanjali, Haridwar was the Guest of Honour. He connected psychology with philosophy and his presentation focussed on three aspects of life - material, emotional and spiritual. Dr. Ravi Gunthe, President, IAAP, and Prof. JNV University, Jodhpur, spoke about the Role of a Psychologist in Special Education. He made a power-point presentation to show how differently-abled children can be empowered by providing them with an inclusive education. The annual report of IAAP was presented by Dr. L.R. Yagnik, Secretary, IAAP. The Key-note address was given by Dr. C.N. Daftuar, Retd. Prof. of Psychology, MS University, Baroda. The theme of his speech was “A Theory of ‘No Personality Type’- Holistic Approach to Understand Personality Profiles”. He talked about the pros and cons of merging personality types. The chief guest of the conference, Guruji Shri Narayan, Director of Companies as well as a Spiritual Trainer, used humor and analogies to throw light on principal human values like love, compassion, service, responsibility and trust, which are necessary for holistic living. SANSKRUTIK SANDHYA SPECIAL GUEST LECTURE

The special Guest Lecture on “Forensic Psychology as a Profession –

Investigative Technologies and Legal Aspects” was chaired by Dr J. M. Vyas, Director General, Gujarat Forensic Science University. The first speaker was Dr. S. L. Vaya, Director, R & D, Rakshashakti University, who spoke on the forensic psychology division at forensic science laboratory. This aspect of applied psychology helps in detecting crime and can be used as evidence the court of law. “A Forensic Psychologist can visit the crime scene and reconstruct

the case”, she said. Her talk included different techniques of forensic science and some important cases like the Nithari Case, Godhara Train Carnage,

and Bomb blast cases.The second speaker, Dr

Asha Srivastav, Principal Scientific Officer, CFSL, CBI talked about ‘forensic

psychology as an investigative technique. The focus of her talk was how premier institutes use different psychological techniques to get information. She outlined the various methods in finding out the truth of a crime scene.

Dr Jyotsana Yagnik, Retd. Hon. Justice, District & Sessions Judge, delivered a talk on ‘Forensic Psychology and its Legal Aspects’. She said, “Every accused has to be treated as innocent till convicted”. She added that the techniques and opinions by the FSL officers and psychologists are believed by the court.

LATE SHRI SULTAN AKHTAR MEMORIAL LECTURE

The inaugural ceremony was followed by Late Shri Sultan Akhtar

Memorial Lecture conducted by Dr. Pestonjee, Retd. Prof. IIM, Ahmedabad. He re-lived

his reminiscences and memories with Dr. Akhtar. He described him as an “action

oriented individual and very existentialist and practical in his approach”.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPThe 49th National and 18th

International Conference organized by Smt. L & C

Mehta Arts College in collaboration with IAAP began on a positive note with a pre-conference workshops in two sessions held on February 28, 2014. The first session was on Stress Management.

The speaker was Dr D. M. Pestonjee, Retd. Prof IIM Ahmedabad. Around 200 participants were enlightened on different stages of stress and analytical approach of stress management. He also talked about strategies for reducing stress and factors affecting the stress tolerance limit.

The 2nd Workshop on Memory Improvement was conducted by Ms Jasbir Kaur, Counsellor, IIT- Gandhinagar.

She gave suggestion for improving memory techniques, how to memorize spellings, how to deal with spelling

confusion, adding meaning to the material for improving memory, and how to remember dates by singing method. She

also talked about Bluma Zeigarnik’s research on how we can remember the unfinished task better.
