MINDS
As long as what’s inside blows our mind, we don’t think a book’s cover is too important.
We’re much more ‘take a step back’ than ‘bull in a china shop’. It’s because we’d rather have time enough to think about the big
picture, rather than rush for quick fixes or off-the-cuff stuff.
So it follows that because we want our own ideas to move the debate, we’re not interested in echoing opinions.
We prefer originality to tired cliché.
Guiseley School is a thinking school. Our students get room to breathe
and time to think.
Teachers have very high expectations and use their secure subject knowledge to plan lessons which are intellectually challenging and academically robust for the students.
OFSTED
Students are very articulate and keen to express their views and opinions.

STAND OUT?STAND OUT?
INDIVIDUALITY
Some people are so focused on ‘creating’ individuals that they do just the opposite: forcing people to fit in. They don’t see that individuals, like David, already exist.
We recognise that by the time students join us, they’re already their own people. We support this individuality and embrace difference and diversity from the start. The Davids of this world are celebrated, not overlooked.
So whether you’re a cracking cricketer, the world’s biggest bookworm, a mesmerising mathematician, a brilliant bassoonist, a bonkers biologist or anything else besides, you’ll be encouraged here, not forced to fit in.
“I will help you become individuals,” says the teacher. “I want to be an individual,” says one student. “I want to be an individual,” says another. “I want to be an individual,” says a third. And so it goes, until just one boy remains silent. “What’s the matter, David?” asks the teacher. “I don’t want to be an individual,” says David.
Staff know students as individuals and genuinely care for their well-being.

PASTORAL CARE
We believe that students will only reach their true potential if they feel safe, secure and free to flourish. Our focus on providing the right environment lets students concentrate on the things that matter to them, like learning and building friendships, and readying themselves for being ‘grown ups’!
By concerning ourselves with the spiritual, moral, social and cultural side of life, we encourage students to make their own decisions and be responsible for their own actions. We recognise that this can be a process of trial and error, so we’re always on hand to support our students, whatever their needs.
Students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and their physical well-being are supported very effectively. This contributes greatly to their success within a highly cohesive learning community that is becoming increasingly a ‘thinking school’.
OFSTED
Behaviour and safety are outstanding. Relationships are good-humoured and students show their maturity in the respect they show for one another and the pride they have in their school.

CURRICULUM
We don’t do one-size-fits-all, and we definitely don’t force square pegs into round holes.
People are different; something that means they’ll follow alternative paths in life. This is the reason we offer such a
well-rounded curriculum: one that will support students who want to go on to university, just as it will support students
who want to follow apprenticeships at 16 or enter the world of work. Some students even become teachers!
All groups of students, including those who receive pupil premium funding, disabled students and those with special educational needs, make at least good progress.

COMMUNITYCOMMUNITY
DIGITAL LITERACY
We understand the power of digital to connect people and bring us all closer together, but we’ll never lose faith in the
importance of face-to-face interaction.
Digital literacy runs through everything we do, including the way we communicate with parents. We offer free Wi-Fi to everyone in school and encourage phones and tablets
to be used to help learning. All this is something that strengthens the community feel across our school.
Each subject department uses social media and our headteacher blogs for our website – it’s a direct and
informal channel that supports inclusiveness and interaction. It inspires others, too.

CONNECTEDCONNECTEDW E L L
There is a strong sense of social awareness that is generated by the school’s mission to challenge and support everybody to think deeply and understand the bigger picture by getting involved in contributing to activities within and outside the school.
OFSTED
At Guiseley, we’re very well connected. We enjoy working with a variety of partners, covering business, health, local community organisations and other educational providers. It goes without saying that our relationships with primary schools make the transition to ‘big school’ run smoothly.

RESPONSIBLE ADULTS
RESPONSIBLE ADULTS
Stepping up to Sixth Form is about more than just choosing A Levels.
It’s about preparing for the responsibility that comes with
adulthood. We support our students to embrace this new-found freedom.
Progressing to Sixth Form is a part of the ‘seven-year journey’ here at Guiseley – so named
because most of our students spend their entire secondary school
life with us.
Sixth Formers are responsible for their own learning as well as organising
the school’s charity events (RAG Week), becoming sports and house leaders, participating in debating
competitions, getting involved in the local community, staging classical
concerts and more.
The Sixth Form is good. Teaching is of high quality and students’ achievement has improved since the previous inspection.
OFSTED
Students have very positive attitudes to learning.
OFSTED
Success in Sixth Form comes in many shapes and sizes. Whether it’s through university entry, sport, music or anything else, we encourage our
students to reach their potential. The majority of grades achieved are
A* to B, which confirms we’re all definitely getting something right.
