Volume XXXIX Number 1 Fall 2017/2018 Guilds at the Canadian Jamboree The Canadian Jamboree was held July 8 to July 15 at Camp Nedooae in Elderbank, Nova Scotia which is about 65 km northeast of Halifax. A total of 5590 Scouts, Scouters and OOS attended. After some negotiations, the Jamboree Post Office was placed in a 10 x 20 trailer at the entrance to St. Andrews Place. Canada Post supplied a dated hand cancel which was in use throughout the Jamboree. We used 3 different Picture Postage stamps - Jamboree logo, Puffy (the mascot), and the crest of Camp Nedooae. The Transportation dept. handled the pick up and drop off of mail from the nearest Post Office in Middle Musquoboit. 20th Guild member Ed Ermel and myself were the total staff, with a bit of help on 2 days. Due to this severe shortage of staff, internal mail was picked up from the Jamboree Post Office by SubCamp staff instead of being delivered by us. We had a total of 195 incoming items, mainly letters with some Registered, XpressPost and courier packages (all from Canada) plus one large UPS box from Taiwan. Outgoing mail was a total of 669 items including 25 to the U.S. and 25 International. We produced 3 different covers plus a postcard. There was supposed to be a supply of Scouts Canada postcards available as well but unfortunately the Jamboree staff person responsible for getting them didn't follow through. Maple Leaf Chapter of SOSSI also produced 3 covers plus a very nice Puffy postcard. All items are available for order but quantities are limited - please email for list and prices. By J. British Columbia Fellowship of Baden-Powell GuildsAnnual General Meeting

September 30 2017

Our B.C. Fellowship meeting was again hosted by the 31st and 40th Guilds and held at the Eagles Hall inMaple Ridge and again followed our one day format.Provincial Guildmaster, Alex Hadden called the meeting to order at 11:00am. Scout silence was held, remembering Guild members Beverly Carl (1st), Bruce Nelson(31st) and Tony Hourd(38th) who have GoneHome since our last AGM.The Roll Call of delegate was completed and determined that a quorum was present. As a Fellowship, the B.C. Guilds still have many unanswered questions in regard to Honours & Awards, though Dennis Kwan did indicate that a committee was to look into the whole system.Other concerns raised were communications from National, either electronically or via Mamook Papah, discrepancies in the financial reporting and the need for more access to National Executive Committee andCouncil communications. The decision to leave ISGF had great support, as did the new Canadian Fellowship Brochure, which I hopecan be made quickly available. We then broke for lunch, which was prepared by ladies associated with the Eagles. After lunch, elections were held, with all positions filled by acclamation; Gerry Williams as ProvincialTreasurer/Registrar, Gordon Ennis as Provincial Secretary, Jonathan Smyth as Deputy Guildmaster, AlexHadden as Past Guildmaster and George Gouraud as B.C. Guildmaster. The new executive was then swornin by our Deputy National Guildmaster Dennis Kwan. The Golden Cane Award was then presented tothe110th Boundary Guild. At this time an open discussion was held concerning the ongoing health and growth of Guilds with manythoughts and ideas expressed including; making a promotional video, mentoring for new or struggling Guilds, visiting Scout Area meetings to talk to Scouters and generally getting out and being more visible both toScouters, the youth and the general public. After we adjourned, a group photo was taken Grant Dimock, Scouts open was held and we finished the daywith a Camp Fire.

Roy Groeneveld

It is with sadness that we share with you thepassing of Scouter Roy Groeneveld. Roywas an active member of the 22nd BadenPowel Guild in Prince George BC for 17years. He held the position of Guild Masterduring some of his time with us. We willespecially miss the unique humor andwealth of knowledge he brought to thegroup.Roy was very talented with his hands inbuilding replica model railroad bridges,

stations and railroad cars and trains. His hobby is displayed atthe local Railroad Museum in Prince George for all to see andadmire. He enjoyed showing his model train collection with thecubs when he was involved with the 2nd Fort George CubPack. Throughout the year cubs earned points and wererewarded with a trip to see and operate the trains that were setup in Baloos home. Roy held the position as a leader from1976 to 1990.Roy was very active in our Guild and took time to volunteer inany activity project we took on. He was one that you couldcount on to be at any planned activity which included but notlimited to the Kettle campaign and Adopt-A-Family for theSalvation Army for Christmas, Trash Trek, Trees for Canada,Camp Hughes renovation projects and any other fund raisingactivities. If you knew Roy you would say "where did Roy havethe time to do what he did". Roy will be greatly missed by hisfellow Guild members.

Bill Edwards is the new Guildmaster as Ross Norton was ofthe opinion it was time to pass on his leadership duties. Billhas a quiet disposition and easy going personality. He iswell known within the Oakville area Scouting community.Bob Russell and Ross Norton over the last several monthshave been presented with the National Guild Award. Thesetwo awards were either presented at a business meeting ofthe Oakville Gilwell Club or social event. To date, fiveawards have been presented to noteworthy individuals as itwas felt they have all gone above and beyond the call ofduty at the local level here. Seven guild members attendedthe St' Paddy's Day social event evening. Over 30members were in attendance as we do joint social eventswith the Oakville Gilwell Club. A good meal and fellowshipwas had by all here! Over the years, we have had thisannual social evening at different venues but our newlocation this year proved be a great spot.

On Saturday May 13th/17 4 guild members attended aScouter's training event on a large piece of ruralproperty in Milton, Ontario. 3 of these guild memberswere trainers and trained others in the skill sets neededto be effective within Scouts Canada leadershippositions. This rural property was located several milesS-E of Blue Springs Scout Reserve. Over thirty peopleattended in which several were Scouts Canada youthmembers. Feedback shows that it should be consideredas an annual training event as those attending learnedsomething new and/or refresher of Scouting skillslearned many years ago. Ron Currell, Jim Richardsonand Bob Russell attended the Toronto Sportsmen'sShow in March/17 at the Mississauga InternationalCentre. Bill Richardson, a Oakville Scouter joined ourgroup as well. It was a chance to see various outdoorvendors, camping equipment and potential places tocamp/explore. Our group also met several otherScouters attending this annual event and exchangedScouting stories. Duane Waltenbury, Jim Richardsonand Bill Edwards recently enjoyed their involvement atthe annual Cub Car Rally held at Sheridan College.Despite it being a cold Saturday in Feb./17 it was agood time had by all involved hereWe currently have 11 members for the 2017-18membership year. We lost one member because theyrejoined Scouts Canada but potentially are recruitinganother new member. Ten of our members attendedthe 2017 Gilwell Reunion at Blue Springs ScoutReserve in Acton, Ontario. 6 members attended theOakville Gilwell Club bar-b-q during the summertime. As Executive members, Bill Edwards and Bob Russellattend the AGM held at Blue Springs Scout Reserve onSaturday October 28/17. It was a chance to representthe interests of our local guild, report on out yearlyactivities at the AGM but involvement in friendlyfellowship with like minded people. We stayed for theday for Scouts Own, lunch and supper.

68th Baden Powell Guild

The 2015-16 year was quiet for the 68th Windystone Guild. Our most noteworthy item would be continuing commitment tothe Windystone Area's Kub Kar event. What makes thisnoteworthy is the group decided to purchase a laptop andprinter to be made available to the event thereby making sureto most current electronic program will be available to operatethe track and that an outdated and troublesome printer beretired with a new one being made available to print off theresults. The Kub Kar event has seen a steady growth inparticipation and the Guild added to the event by having alarge display of badges by two of our avid collectors. Theidea was to inspire the youth to become collectors in one ofthe oldest "fellowship" aspects of Scouting. As always, our members are always on the lookout for newblood to recruit into the Guild though our numbers remainconsistent. It does seem that fewer and fewer past Scoutersare interested in carrying on. This might have to do with howScouts Canada is perceived to operate in not only the Districtbut on a National Level.Of Course, social events are a main component of the 68thWindystone and the usual suspects were found at all theevents through this year's Guild Master was notably absentas most of the gathers due to various miss-timed illness.Going forward, we will again have our September "fellowship"fire at the Connor's residence where we will be discussing (orbe told by the incoming Guild Master) this year's focus. Wewill have to find a new location to meet since Scouts Canadain their infinite wisdom, have decided to divest themselves ofthe local Scout Hall wherein Guide's Canada has taken overthe building and up the usage fee from what we are lead tobelieve, 300%.

Our Guild meets everythird month with a pot luck dinner prior to the meeting.Members also attend two meetings with our Peterboroughtwin guild.

Members of the 99th Guild gathered for agroup photograph around the new BSSR sign at the Y in theroad. It was installed by Camp Ranger Paul. We alsodedicated a newly planted tree by Memory Lane in memory ofWendy Taylor. She was a member of our Guild who passedaway. Our next gathering will be for our annual springcleaning at BSSR in April. During our 3 days there, we willwork together on tasks around the camp. This is aconcentrated effort to prepare BSSR for the Spring Season, but just as important to have laughs, fun and fellowship withthe members of the BSSR Camp Committee in our combinedgoal of improving BSSR.
