Submarines at the North PoleTuesday, May 7 @ 7 pm

This presentation, by Ray Misiewicz, an engineer who helped build nuclear-powered submarines, recounts three first-time voyages to the North Pole. The first is Sir Hubert Wilkins, who in 1931 used the “first” submarine – actually a converted pre-WW1 US Navy vessel – in Arctic exploration. The presentation then covers the first Polar transit from the Pacific to the Atlantic in 1958 aboard the US Navy’s first nuclear submarine, USS Nautilus, It concludes with the voyage of the USS Skate; in 1959, it was the first nuclear submarine to surface at the North Pole.

Fort Drum: The First 100 Years Saturday, May 11 @ 2 pm

This fascinating film tells the story of how a dusty, windswept, remote, early 1900s cavalry camp evolved into a modern training marvel for the officers and men of the Army’s only Mountain Division.

Fort Drum, The First Hundred Years traces the installation’s evolution from a national training site created by President Theodore Roosevelt to Pine Camp and then Camp Drum and ultimately Fort Drum, one of the largest and most well-equipped military posts in the Northeast. The fort is the economic engine of northern New York.

Filmmaker Matthew White will be here to discuss the film.
