Guiding victims of DomesticViolence towards hope and healing

2012 Annual Report

Page 2: Guiding victims of Domestic Violence - Home - Artemis Center

What is a Survivor?( By coming to Artemis Center and talking to an advocate I fiffiinally found the sincere support, courage, wonderful uplifting advice, and above all, HOPE that I needed to leave my relationship. I learned that there is a life out there waiting for me after the abuse.

Dear Friends and Supporters,Thank you! Again in 2012 we were able to provide service to over 5,000 victims of domestic violence and their children, because of your support. Despite shrinking funds from governmental grants and the local United Way, we were able to continue our critical services because of donors like you.

One of our bigger projects in 2012 was our feasibility study, conducted by Goettler and Associates. Some of you may have received a request to be interviewed for the study, which was initiated to determine if a capital campaign to grow our investment was prudent and would be successful in today’s economy. Thank you to all of you who participated. The results were very useful, despite our deciding to wait on beginning such a campaign. We learned that overall the opinions about our agency and our work was overwhelmingly positive. Our reputation for providing high quality service remains intact. But we also learned that many of you are confused about what services we provide, and how our services are different from those provided by other agencies in the community. This information has led us to embark on a new marketing campaign, directed toward both donors and consumers, to delineate our unique offerings.

For nearly 28 years, Artemis Center has provided a wide range of services to unsheltered victims of domestic violence. We operate the domestic violence Hotline during the peak hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, providing crisis assistance, information, safety planning, support, and referrals. Our victim advocacy programming is at the center of what we do. Advocacy involves more than providing emotional support, safety planning, court accompaniment and referrals, although these activities are incredibly important to survivors. Advocacy is a distinct activity that involves working to change policies, practices, and conditions that are negatively impacting victim/survivors. We work not only to improve the lives of current victims but to decrease the incidence of domestic violence in our community. One way we do this is through our child therapy program, which seeks to interrupt the familial cycle of violence. Artemis Center is unique in the level of service we provide to our clients, many of whom remark that our services saved their lives.

None of our accomplishments would have been possible without the generosity of our donors. Because of you, we continue the fight against the tragedy of domestic violence. Again, we thank you.

In Peace and Gratitude,

Patti Schwarztrauber, MSW, LISWExecutive Director

5,000+victims of domestic violence and their children were helped in 2012 because of your support.

What is Support?( To undergo or endure, especially with patience or submission.

I feel that I can have a better life because of this program and look towards the future with hope.

What is Advocacy:?( Speaking or acting for change or justice on behalf of oneself or another person or cause.

Artemis Center advocacy programs represent the driving philosophy of the agency. Artemis Advocates are committed to encouraging victims to think for themselves and to make decisions independently. Our advocates inform victims of available choices and support them in whatever decision the client feels is best to enhance their safety.

Our advocates act as the compassionate and steady support a victim needs. Sometimes this means helping a nervous victim navigate the court system. Often, it’s helping a mother create a safety plan for herself and her children. Artemis Center advocates provide information, encouragement, and direct assistance to victims in their most vulnerable times.

ADVOCACY PROGRAM

1,233clients were served through court outreach.

327clients received accompaniment to civil court hearings.

Page 6: Guiding victims of Domestic Violence - Home - Artemis Center

What is Crisis intervention?( Assistance and support during periods of violence with the aim of restoring empowerment, hope, and independence in a victim’s life.

3,642callers (victims and those seeking to assist victims and their children)

425victims were served as a “walk-in” as they came directly to the agency

When you’re living in a dangerous household, you may have only a few minutes to make a call that could save your life. That’s why a crisis hotline is so important. Artemis Center, in partnership with the local domestic violence shelter, provides a 24-hour point of contact for victims of domestic violence. Artemis Center staffs the hotline during peak hours, Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Many callers need crisis intervention or emergency assistance, while others need help obtaining a Civil Protection Order. The hotline is truly a lifeline for victims. By calling, a victim has the opportunity to create a safety plan, get information about housing, the legal system, health care and so much more.

If you are like most people, you try to avoid conflict. Imagine being a child who cannot escape the violent conflict at home. Artemis Center serves the youngest victims of domestic violence through individual and group therapy. The goal is to help children ages 0-18 years overcome the devastating effects of witnessing violence. Young witnesses who do not get help face future struggles. They are more likely to experience depression, learning and behavioral problems, substance abuse, and violent relationships in adulthood. At Artemis Center, children can heal emotionally. They can learn to develop healthy relationships. This program aims to end the generational cycle of violence that can plague families for decades.

Children’s Therapy

Program

What is Hope?( the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best.

198children and 162 of their caregivers were served by the Artemis Center.

91%of caregivers reported that their child was coping better since receiving child therapy services from Artemis Center

For over 18 years, an Artemis Center advocate has worked at Montgomery County Children Services. She works closely with caseworkers on cases involving both domestic violence and child abuse or neglect. The advocate helps women understand the danger to their children in living with domestic violence. She also provides training for Children Services staff and facilitates an education group for moms involved with the child protection agency. Because of this program, many children who otherwise would have entered the foster care system are living safely with their non-violent parent.

Children Services Collaborative Project

581consultations with Children Services caseworkers that the Artemis Center advocate held.

208families were served through this collaborative project.

40mothers completed the education group.

96%of clients increased their knowledge of existing community resources and barriers for getting and staying safe.

Page 9: Guiding victims of Domestic Violence - Home - Artemis Center

Because many abusers control the comings and goings of their partners, victims often have a difficult time contacting Artemis Center. With the Job Center Outreach Program, clients can connect to Artemis Center services without alerting their partner. Both Job Center staff and consumers have easy access to training and support regarding domestic violence. The Artemis Center advocate can arrange to accompany a victim to court, help her design a safety plan, and refer her to other community resources.

Job Center Outreach Advocate

What is Empowerment?( Authority; education without coercion. Going from having no power to having power. Allowing the survivor to determine her own course of action.

100%of clients know how to plan for their safety.
