Atatürk and the state created a modern civilization. But we still keep sometraditions and old habits. Folk dances is one of them. Almost every region has its own. The most important usage of folk dances is the country side weddings. Theymade local dances all day. The most famous and simplest one is HALAY which I am trying tosend to you a video about it.

HERE IS SOME INSTRUCTIONSAll Turks knows it. people side by side puts their arms over to ones'shoulder on both sides and make three steps to right1. Left foot step to right over right foot2. Right foot step to right3. left foot step to right again4. right foot step to right again5. swing the left foot to right6. swing the right food to left.Do all over again and continuethe head dancer at the most right has a big white handkerchief in hishand. She or he turns it around and swings it according the tempo.Mostly she or he goes around the place and everybody joins them. The musical instruments are only a drum and a simple clarinetBut the popular folk dance is different from region to region. Some timemixed some time only men some time only women. Most of the local dances has their legendsMost of the wedding in towns begin with a tango 99% of the time it is Lacomparsita. Tangos goes on some popular dances may come but they always endwith halay and another traditional dance which we call ciftetelli. Most of the schools has folk dance groups and there is national competitionsfor their dances and for costumes for different age groups. There is also associations for folk dancing. OUR UNIFORM

Our guide and scout uniforms are always same for both girls and boys. Girls and boys wear long or short sleeved light gray shirts with National badge and badge of the group. Pants and skirts are dark navy blue. They also carry world membership badge. On left arm the name of the province is white capital letters on red background written as a small arch (Ankara Scouts and Guides one of the few provinces who has also a nice province badge) and the rectangular number of troop also white capital letters on red. Proficiency badges are on right arm. Scarves are different colors. National staff and trainers and guides and scout who go another country wears national scarf which is red and has 3cm wide white edges. In camps girls mostly wear jeans too. We also use T-shirts in big camps with a logo on the theme of the camp . On our meetings mostly we use only scarf

OUR FOODThey love to eat Hamburgers I suppose so. But I don't know they prefer Mc Donald or Burger King. Some likes KFC too. Also pizza is a popular one. The most popular one is Pide it is Great Grand mother of Pizza. Pide shops are all around Turkey and number of them are about ten times more then the above mentioned imported outlets. Bureck is also a food they like (me too) (recipe is given below). A very special meet ball with thick slices of fried potato pieces and lamp on skew are the other popular ones. There are many types of kebabs and Queen of them is Doner kebab. In Europe they call it Gyro kebab. Most of our dishes arevegetable skews. One with green beans, one with potatoes, and others with other vegetables. Mothers love to cook vegetables with ground beef. Some love to eat them with white bread but most children hate vegetables. Natural yogurt is always on the table like milk on yours especially with stuffed grape leaves, zucchini, eggplants, cabbage leaves. When they stuffed with rice and ground beef and some spices. These stuffed food also made with rice spices and a special Pine nut with olive oil and eaten cold. This time noyogurt but you add some lemon juice on the top. We have our food very similar with Greece, Armenia and our Arab neighbors at the south. Even some dishes from Russia too. I love Russian salad. It is something like your potato salad. You will cut cups of boiled potatoes, preserved cucumbers, carrots and add baby peas. The cubes will be very small something like a big green pea. You will mix all of these with mayonnaiseand you fill your sandwiches with it. After Turkey begin good relation's with USA, people begin to call this salad as American Salad. But I never saw it, in some 16 states where I have been.

OUR FOOD "BÖREK"

BURECK (We write it BÖREK every body loves it. It is never tried in a camp but it is the best dish to make it before long trips to the camp to be eaten underway. Guides mostly eat it with fruit juice or ayran 2/3 naturalyogurt,1/3 water mix ) Recipe By :Bob [email protected] (Revised)Serving Size : 8 Preparation Time :0:00Categories : Filo Ground BeefMain Dishes OnionsAmount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method

1/2 pound margarine or butter1 pound pkg. Filo pastry -- thawed, if frozen1 1/2 pounds ground beef1 1/2 onion -- chopped1/4 teaspoon garlic salt1/4 teaspoon cuminsalt and pepper -- to tasteMelt margarine. In 13x9" baking pan, layer 6 Filo sheets with melted butter and flicks of water to make bottom crust. Brown beef and onion. Add seasonings. Drain well. Place layer of meat on crust. Repeat layering until all meat is used. Top with remaining layer of Filo, at least 4 sheets. Seal edges. Make a souse with margarine and small amount of yogurt mix. This makes borek soft. Bake for 1 hour at 350 F. or until brown and crusty. If not brown, turn on broiler briefly (very very light reddish brown). After finish cover with paper (something like newspaper for twenty minutes). Cut 2x2" pieces May be done with boiled vegetables, peas, potatoes and carrots in very small cubes or potato puree or white cheese and parsley I tried once withchampignons and cheddar cheese another time with fish fillet. Most children like white cheese and parsley rather than ground beef
