    Reading Response Essays

    Instructions

Definition and Goals- Reading response essays are informal personal commentaries written do demonstrate: (a) that youve read at

two original historical documents (primary texts) in an extraordinarily careful and thoughtful way; and (b) that youve been able to anaand relate to a problem, issue, concern or idea expressed in the text by recognizing and drawing upon an experience that youve fac

your own life. This assignment is designed to help you master the skill ofself-reflexive analysis, and to enhance your ability to devoriginal and creative insights.

Choosing a Text- Form among the historical texts listed on each o the Primary Document Handouts, you must choose one. All

handouts include texts that originated before the Civil War. To understand their historical contexts, you should draw upon informa

provided in pre-Midterm lectures, and in the Dubois & Dumenil reading assignments from Chapter 1-5(pp.2-322). You should loo

texts that strike you as particularly interesting, disgusting, amusing, enlightening (or whatever). They should grab you in some way.the stronger your reaction, the better.)

Format- Essay should be 2-3 pages long, typed and double-spaced. Margins and fonts should be standard-sized. Only your name

section number should appear at the top of the first page.

Grading- Each reading response essay is worth 15 points.

Grading Rubric attached at other page.

Students are free to be creative in the style and organization of their work, but each essay should fulfill the six expectations cited below

    (1) Identify the primary document youre responding to, and say where you found it.For example, you might begin by saying: I am writing this essay in response to Anne Bradstreets poem the Prologue, which

provided on a handout distributed in class. Formal bibliographic citation are not necessary: all I need to know is where I can qu

locate the document in question, in case I need to refer back to it while reading your essay.

(2)Briefly summarize the document and I do mean Briefly!!!In three sentences or less, note what its about, and what the authors main point seems to be. This is to demonstrate that you reall

understand the text. Note that is possible to misread/misunderstand some of these documentsmany of which are Can you unders

what author is saying (what her/his point is) & summarize it accurately? Can you develop an opinion/critical response to the authors

Self-reflexive level: can you see and understand where your opinion/response originates inyour own life experience?(3)(4)(5)(6).

I have emailed everything else in other email, which include:

    Followed instruction page,

    Reading responses essay example page,

    Grading rubric page,

In class handout- Laughing warrior girl (2page)

In class handout- Ataensie, The woman who fell from the sky (2page)

In class handout- An angry slave (2page)

In class handout- Anne Bradstreet (1 page)

Please choose one of the primary texts I have attached in another email. Then write a 2-3 page essay that will demonstrate your abilit

respond to that text self-reflexively. Focus on something specific that captured your attention in the text. Describe your reaction,

explain how it was prompted by some aspect of your own life experience. Consider the ways that gender may have colored that exper

and your reaction to it. Review the instructions guide carefully as you are writing, and make sure you are meeting the expectatindicated in the sample-grading rubric.
