INVITATION FROM THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE

Dear Sirs,

ISOPOL – International Symposium on Problems of Listeriosis - is a major item on the Microbial Food Safety

and Public Health calendars. An itinerant, International Symposium that has been held every three or four

years since the 1950’s, dealing with all aspects of what has become a serious food and public health issue –

Listeria monocytogenes, and the disease it causes - Listeriosis.

For the first time ISOPOL will take place in Portugal, in its second city and northern capital, Porto. With its

rich history, and unique atmosphere - at once ancient and contemporary - Porto is becoming a major

conference destination and we promise that it will not disappoint for ISOPOL XVII.

ISOPOL brings together the world’s foremost specialists on all aspects of Listeria and Listeriosis to present

their latest findings and debate the key issues which these findings bring up. By offering attractive rates

and other incentives, ISOPOL also attracts a healthy presence of young scientists from all over the world.

Industry, officials and academics from medicine, public health, veterinary science, microbiology, food

science and many other disciplines all come together in ISOPOL.

It is thus with great pleasure that we invite you to participate as partners in ISOPOL XVII. The scientific and

medical communities will be represented at the ISOPOL XVII, providing a great opportunity for suppliers of

pharmaceuticals and other medical materials, microbiological media, reagents and kits, as well as suppliers

of laboratory instruments and equipments to access this key group of customers. The increasing availability

of sophisticated research tools is leading to a new partnership between academia and the commercial

sector. That’s why this meeting offers you an unique opportunity to demonstrate your company's products

and services. ISOPOL XVII is unquestionably an international event which will bring up to 350 delegates to

Porto, this will also be an excellent occasion for all those companies and agencies with an interest in

reaching professionals and opinion makers from around the world. In ISOPOL XVII there will be a range of

sponsorship opportunities and a commercial exhibition stands. If you are interested to access this

international, scientific community and in being our partner in this event as sponsor and / or exhibitor,

please consult the more detailed information along this document, visit the congress web page

(www.esb.ucp.pt/isopol2010/) or contact the Organization Committee.

ABOUT ISOPOL

The ISOPOL (International Symposium On Problems Of Listeriosis) meeting occurs every three to four years.

The first meeting took place in 1957 in Giessen, Germany and from then on the interest in studying these

bacteria grew, giving rise from time to time to further ISOPOL conferences.

Murray, Webb, and Swann first published a description of Listeria monocytogenes in 1926. Several earlier

reports may have described the isolation of Listeria, however, the isolates were not available to do

confirmatory investigations or comparisons with known strains.

In 1927, during investigations of unusual deaths observed in gerbils near Johannesburg, South Africa. Pirie

discovered a new microorganism, the agent of which he referred to as "The Tiger River disease." He named

this new agent Listerella hepatolytica.

However, in 1939, the Judicial Commission of the International Commission of the International Committee

on Systematic Bacteriology rejected the generic name Listerella, because it had previously been used for a

mycetozoan in 1906 in honour of Arthur Lister (younger brother of Lord Lister) and for a species of

Foraminifer in 1933 in honour of Joseph Jackson Lister (father of Lord Lister). Then, in 1940, Pirie proposed

the name Listeria. Before and even after this date, numerous names were used to designate L.

monocytogenes.

Later, in 1949, J. Potel (Halle, Germany) “rediscovered” this bacterium. But it is only through the hard

work and diligence of H. P. R. Seeliger, that Listeria became to be recognized by the scientific community.

The ISOPOL meeting has focussed its interest on scientific research in several areas, i.e., the clinical,

veterinary, and public health areas as well as the food industry. The ISOPOL meeting attracts scientists of

all ages from different parts of the world and with different interests. This provides for a very warm and

congenial atmosphere and leads to an interactive exchange of ideas.

WELCOME TO PORTO

Overlooking the River Douro (Rio Douro), Porto is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The old name, used in the 5th Century, was ‘Cale’, then ‘Portucale’, from whence came the name of the country – Portugal.

Spanning and reflected in the Rio Douro, are several bridges, some old, as is that designed by Gustavo Eiffel in his inimitable style and depicted on many postcards and leaflets describing the delights of the city, but others are of more modern construction though none the less elegant in their simplistic designs. Porto is a city of considerable contrasts, ancient churches decorated in the Arabic style of blue tiles and modern buildings, such as the particularly striking design of the recently completed concert hall (Casa de Música) at the top of Avenida da Boavista. The people also reflect these contrasts, being both conservative but innovative and cosmopolitan, both bourgeois and individualistic, both strongly family-oriented but highly social. These contrasts perhaps reflect the old and new, like the reflections in the Rio Douro itself, of a small riverside town and an Atlantic city, now known worldwide.

Porto was established on the northern banks of the Rio Douro, following the curves of the river and climbing up the steep hills to form the streets and lanes, with their stairs and alleys leading onwards to squares and gardens. Porto has preserved much of its cultural heritage and artistic achievements of the past, and there are often artists to be found sketching and painting the buildings of unique design, richly embellished with details in gilt, ceramic and blue tiles, many of these depicting the religious or artisanal heritage of the city – some of the best and largest are to be found inside the railway station of São Bento. For anyone with an artistic eye or with just a camera, Porto offers a wide variety of urban, landscape architectural and artistic opportunities.

The old quarters along the river, are colourful and elegant when viewed from the south bank of the river (Vila Nova de Gaia), while the view across the river from the north bank in Porto is of the warehouses of the port wine companies, and a mixture of old family and modern restaurants along the Cais de Gaia. Along the north bank of the river, in the old town of Porto, there are many small, intimate bars and restaurants where

7

one may spend a delightful afternoon or evening sampling the many fine wines and excellent local foods cooked in the old styles – enjoy!

As Port wine (Vinho do Porto), a fortified wine of quite remarkable variety, became known throughout Europe and beyond, mainly from the efforts of English gentlemen who appreciated its fine qualities and keeping capacity, the name of the city of Porto has reached many parts of the world. No visitor should leave Porto without visiting at least one of the Vinho do Porto companies to learn about the making and tasting of Port wine. Alternatively, to taste the many varieties of Port wine, a visit to the Solar do Vinho Porto (near the Palácio de Cristal) should be on any visitor’s itinerary.

It is no wonder that Porto was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. It is truly a city of contrasts in so many ways that one just has to visit and experience all that the city has to offer. Take the opportunity to stay awhile, to meet the people, to enjoy the charms of this city of contrasts – you may find you need to return again to enjoy it all!

You will be made most welcome in Porto!
