Activity Description: One of Martin Luther King’s greatest accomplishments was his ability to help people appreciate that differences make us special. He encouraged people to be proud of their heritage and to celebrate differences in themselves and others. As a member of the party company, Kindergarten Party People Unlimited you have been asked to plan and organize a birthday celebration for your class to commemorate Dr. King’s contributions. All food, decorations, and activities should be planned to celebrate the diversity and acceptance that Martin Luther King Jr. championed.

Checklist for Providing Guidance : 1. Students should have background information about Martin Luther King Jr.’s life
either through whole group experiences or individual study (see Pebble Go link below).
2. Students will choose a date (with teacher approval) and plan a celebration to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday.
3. Students should create invitations, plan activities, organize food (optional; consider food allergies), and create decorations. Print off attached party planning page for guidance.
4. After event is planned- it’s time to party! Have fun celebrating the life of Martin Luther King Jr.!
Possible Considerations (teacher could give these as ideas if children need help in the brainstorming stage): colored paper chains (to represent different skin colors), ethnic food from each child’s home country, listening to music from other countries, handprint artwork for decorations, watching portions of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a dream speech.”, watching “My Friend Martin,” reading a book about Martin Luther King Jr.’s life.

Activity Description: The students will create a rebus book of Presidential facts on Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. The students will present their finished product to the class and explain why these figures are celebrated.

Checklist for Providing Guidance:1. Several books will be read to the whole class in celebration of President’s Day. A whole group discussion of why presidents are important will follow.2. The teacher will explain the REBUS BOOK TASK to the extension group. Several rebus examples will be presented to the students. Copy and paste into Internet browser- http://www.abcteach.com/free/r/rebus_school_bw.pdf (Many other free rebus stories can be accessed at www.abcteach.com3. The students will then view the PebbleGo biographies of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington in order to gather facts about these men and may also use many of the books listed under resources as supplemental material.4. The students will then create two rebus books containing 5 to 7 facts about each of these presidents. A Rebus Bank is provided under Resources below.5. The students will then present their “books” to the class and add them to the class library.

Activity Description: The students will watch a video of Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama on PebbleGo for background knowledge. They will then create a double bubble map comparing the past and present and how it relates to the minority community. Grade Level : Kindergarten Quarter : 3rd Bloom’s Taxonomy Level : Analyzing and Evaluating
Related Academic Strands: Historical Understandings
Related Standards and Elements: SSKH1e. The students will identify the purpose of MLK Jr. Day and describe the person celebrated. SSKH3 The student will correctly use words and phrases related to chronology and time to explain how things change.
Checklist for Providing Guidance: 1. Prior to this extension task an overview of the Civil Rights movement would be provided to the whole class.2. A viewing of “Our Friend Martin” is suggested for background knowledge if your school has a copy.3. The TLC Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama lesson will be done as a whole class before assigning the extension double bubble map.4. The purpose of the double bubble map is to compare and contrast the lives of the two figures.5. A word/phrase bank is provided! The students should also provide a couple of “self-made” bubble fillers.6. Presentation of the double bubble map and exploration/explanation of the obstacles faced by each to the whole class.

Examples: boxes, butcher paper, clay, markers, paint, cardboard, glue, tape, sequins, and glitter. After researching information on Barack Obama, students will design a monument that reflects Obama’s life and accomplishments. Finally, students will explain the significance of the design and how it supports Obama’s achievements.
