    The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed

    instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by

    Guideline Adult Child Infant

    Age: Adolescents and Older 1 to Adolescence Less that 1 year old

    Determine

    Unresponsiveness

    The same for all age groups as you determine unresponsiveness evaluate for

    absence of normal breathing.

    Activate EMS If an adult and the arrest is not witnessed, or is a sudden arrest in an adult orchild, call 911 once unresponsiveness has been determined. If an infant or child,or you have reason to believe the adult has experienced respiratory arrest, call

    911 after 2 minutes of CPR.

    C Check for pulse forno more than 10seconds.Pulse check location: Carotid Carotid Brachial or Femoral

    C If pulse is present,administer rescuebreaths.

    Rescue breaths: 1 every5 - 6 seconds.

    Rescue breaths: 1 every3 - 5 seconds.

    If heart rate < 60, begincompressions as below.
