of the event

SWYAA-Spain managed to be present again in the Official GA this year through 2

representatives: Pinto-san [SWY20] and his wife, Maria.

SWYAA-Spain is happy to have participated in (almost!) all GA's:

From GA1 to GA9 (except GA3 in Australia).

The GA was a nice moment to summarize all the activities carried over by SWYAA-

Spain and also to share with other SWYAAs the main challenges faced [lack of funds,

annual payment, disconnection of some ex-PYs but re-connection with some others,

etc.]

During the Official Programme, SWYAA-Spain shared the renovation of its

corporative image and presented the Official Logo to be used in any SWYAA-Spain

activity from now on (as well as to be used in the Facebook Group, Facebook Page

and the Official SWYAA-Spain Website/Blog):

Pinto-san and Maria wanted to include in the Country Report their most sincere

gratitude to the organizing committee of GA9 in Fiji as well as to Tamae-san and

Tomoko-san for having authorized the celebration of their 2nd wedding during the

Optional Tour in Beachcomber Island Resort. The Renewal of Vows took place on

18/08/2015 in an unforgettable ceremony hosted by SWYAA-Fiji and witnessed by

ex-PYs from 11 different countries, counting with Auggie Bartning (President of

SWYAA-USA) as Pinto-san's best-man and with Ayako Sekimoto (SWY21) +

Fumiko Ogasawara (SWY20) as Maria's bridesmaids.

(fund-raising for scientific research)

Date of the

event

Saturday, November 14th, 2015

Hosting city Girona (Catalonia, Spain).

How many

ex-PYs

involved and

how many

beneficiaries?

One ex-PY involved (Carme Feliu, SWY13, REN 2004).

Beneficiaries: 100 participating volunteers.

Final reach: campaign known within the Autonomous Community of Catalonia & Broadcasted

by the autonomous television channel

Please write a

summary of

the event

Every year the main TV channel in the autonomous region of Catalonia (TV3) organizes a major

fund-raising (non-sportive) marathon which aims at contributing to scientific research

development on a specific medical field (http://www.tv3.cat/marato/). 2015’s “TV3 marathon”

targeted research on diabetes. Several fund-raising activities were organized simultaneously by

volunteers throughout the Catalan territory to contribute to this marathon.

An outstanding insurance company called “Mutua General de Catalunya” contributed to this

Marathon by organizing the campaign “1 origami, 1 euro”. They donated 1 euro for each origami

crane gathered before the date of the marathon http://www.1origami1euro.org/tu-grulla/.

Thousands of volunteers in schools and centers participated enthusiastically.

Our center, Nipponia (www.nipponia.cat), organized an Origami Workshop and contributed with

more than 1.300 origami cranes (as compared to 900 last year) to this campaign and to the TV3

Marathon.

The total amount raised by the campaign “1 origami 1 euro” last year was: 49.869€. The final total

amount raised by the TV3 Maraton was: 9.550.109€. A similar or increased amount is expected

this year. Our contribution therefore was more than 1.300€.

The “1 origami 1 euro” campaign was so successful that it will be permanently contributing to the

TV3 marathon every year from now on and Nipponia decided to keep contributing to it every year

in December too.

Not only is it a fruitful volunteer activity that highly contributes to the scientific and social

community, but at the same time it helps raise awareness about one of the Japanese culture

features: origami folding and the story about Sadako Sasaki san in Hiroshima.

Pictures of the workshop and of the cranes gathered can be found on our Facebook:

event

“Pen-pal letter exchange program” with Kameoka, Kyoto.

Date of the

event

Since 2013 and to be continued during 2016.

Hosting city Girona (Spain) and Kameoka (Kyoto, Japan).

How many

ex-PYs

involved and

how many

beneficiaries?

2 PYs (Sachiko Okamoto san and Carme Feliu, both of them participants in the SWY13,

year 2000). About 40 Japanese young students exchange letters with around 40 students

of Japanese language from our center on a regular basis: every 3 months approximately.

Please write a

summary of

the event

In 2004, when Carme Feliu participated in the Renaissance Youth Leaders Invitation Program as

an Education representative, a new activity was proposed: the “Pen-pal letter exchange program”,

aimed at encouraging youths worldwide to exchange letters in several languages thus enhancing

cross-cultural communication among different countries. Nipponia (www.nipponia.cat) began

exchanging letters with an ex-PY in Okinawa several years ago, and now continues the program

with a private language school called “Willpower Learning Institute”

(https://www.facebook.com/pages/Willpower-Learning-Institute/433711413376718 ) sited in

Kameoka (Kyoto). Our students first wrote a letter introducing themselves and their hometowns

in Japanese and English, then students in Kameoka replied and pen-pal pairs were formed.

Christmas cards were exchanged too and we are currently working on their replies. Now we are

exchanging letters on a regular basis: every 3 months approximately.

It is an amusing activity that allows youths to learn about another country, its traditions and

lifestyle and promotes friendship. All participants are highly motivated and it also allows them to

improve their language skills in a fun way.

In the future we would like our students to meet with their pen-pals through a student exchange

(we are working on this but it is difficult and expensive).

We are all very happy and thankful that the origin of the “Pen-pal letter exchange program” was

the Ship for World Youth Program and the Renaissance Youth Leaders Invitation Program.

Pictures of the letters exchanged can be found on our Facebook:

In June, a “Japanese night” was organized by Truffaut Cinema in Girona (a movie theatre usually

showing movies in their original version with subtitles) and Nipponia in order to launch the movie

“Futatsume no mado” (“Still waters” in English, “Aguas Tranquilas” in Spanish) by Naomi

Kawase in its original Japanese version with subtitles. Before showing the movie, the attendees

had the chance to eat some sushi in the outdoor garden of the cinema theatre while admiring the 3

calligrahies made by Nipponia students at the calligraphy workshop.

It was a great night, with about 50 people attending the movie theater (only about 10 attendees

were Nipponia students so this activity had a great impact on different target people in the city).

During the country-presentation in the GA9-Fiji, Pinto-san (SWY20) commented the participation

of SWYAA-Spain in the "Treasure Box Project".

In collaboration with Yuichiro Takahashi (SWY13) the project was implemented in Spain thanks

to Carme Feliu (SWY13) to sell hand–made products from Minamisanriku (a small village deeply

affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011). All the money fundraised was sent in order

to help Minamisanriku people.

The Project started in 2012 and has already raised $11 700 in 4 years.

3 SWYAAs showed their interest in also participate in the project so after the GA9, SWYAA

Spain put into contact Yuichiro with SWYAA-USA, SWYAA-Australia and SWYAA-Uruguay

who have also started selling the hand-made products from Minamisanriku.

Yuichiro Takahasi (SWY13) thanked the new collaborations on behalf of Minamisanriku people

and confirmed that SWYAA-Australia and SWYAA-Uruguay had already received the hand-

made products to start selling them.

participate when we present the results during GA10 in India!
