A small capital for big experiences.

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia and the Euro-pean Green Capital 2016, is regularly included on lists of Europe's most interesting destina-tions. It is a relatively small city with a roman-tic soul, a fairy-tale appearance, a vibrant life, and a green heart. It is easy to explore as is offers more than 20 different guided tours. Which face of Ljubljana would you like to get to know most of all?

Ljubljana is a city that has love in its name. The name Ljubljana sounds very similar to the Slo-venian word 'ljubljena', meaning 'the loved one' or 'beloved', and for those who know Ljubljana really well the two words mean the same.

Ljubljana is Europe in miniature. It is a place where prehistoric pile dwellers meet Roman citizens, the Baroque holds hands with Art Nouveau, and the Slavic soul goes side by side with the genius of the 20th century European architect and urban planner Jože Plečnik.

Ljubljana has a green soul. It is a city that loves everything green, which is reflected not only in its green appearance, but also in its prestigious European Green Capital 2016 title.

Ljubljana is bursting with taste. At the cross-roads of diverse culinary traditions, it has re-tained its typical flavours. Traditional Ljubljana dishes can be found under the Taste Ljubljana brand.

Last but not least, Ljubljana is a small capital for big experiences. It offers a choice of dif-ferent experiences allowing you to discover its diverse and compelling stories.

In order to make these experiences as easily accessible and convenient as possible, we have prepared more than 20 different guided tours of Ljubljana for groups. You can choose from tours taking you to Plečnik's, Prešeren's, Ba-roque or Art Nouveau Ljubljana, visit Ljubljana's churches, the Town Hall or the Žale Cemetery, take a literary walk, experience the Roman city of Emona, see the city on a river cruise or from the seat of a bicycle, get to know Ljubljana's green soul, enjoy the immense variety of local flavours, explore the city's green surrounding areas and more.

All tour itineraries can be modified to suit your needs (both in terms of content and duration) or devised from scratch to fully meet your re-quirements and expectations.

On this guided tour, you will take a walk through the historical city centre of Ljubljana to explore all the major sights and, through them, get to know the city's history, art, architecture, and way of life in the past and present.

Ljubljana ranks as one of the smaller European capitals, but nevertheless it boasts an exceptionally rich history and tradition, a recognizable style, culture and art, and an atmosphere reminiscent of both Central Europe and the Mediterranean. The city has preserved evidence of a five-thousand-year history, arranged in a mosaic in-cluding, among other things, the remains of the Roman city of Emona, the historical city centre with its medi-eval castle, Baroque façades, creations by the architect Jože Plečnik, decorative portals and uneven roofs, pic-turesque bridges spanning the river Ljubljanica, and the pleasant green Ljubljanica embankments − all within the distance of a nice and easy walk.

Your guide will take you on a walk around the histori-cal city centre, where you will learn the history and stories of Ljubljana's major sights. From the Prešernov trg square, dominated by the Franciscan Church and connected to the Triple Bridge, you will head towards Plečnik's Market and the Cathedral, continue to the Town Hall and the Robba Fountain, cross the Cob-blers' Bridge, pass the National and University Library to reach the Križanke Summer Theatre, and continue to the Kongresni trg square. Medieval, Baroque, Art Nouveau, and Plečnik's Ljubljana − who knows which one you will like best.

5 Ljubljana Beer Experience

12 | Ljubljana - Guided tours for groups www.visitljubljana.com | 13

Major experiences• Getting to know Ljubljana's vibrant beer scene

through a tasting session of beers and snacks, and learning about the history of brewing in Slovenia and Ljubljana.

What is included?• A tasting session of seven different beers and

three snacks• Admission to the Brewery Museum

and the Union pub

Slovenia, with its rich brewing history and exceptionally trendy current beer offerings, unquestionably deserves its place on the map of brewing countries. Recent years have seen the development of a particularly lively brewing scene in Ljubljana, where new niche microbreweries are continually being added to the list of well-established breweries.

This tour gives you an insight into the rich history of beer brewing in Slovenia and Ljubljana, which goes back a very long way. Proofs of this are 3,900-year-old beer barrels excavated at the Ljubljana Marshes. The earliest known brewery in Ljubljana dates back at least to 1592, and by 1796, the city had six breweries. It is therefore not a coincidence that today Ljubljana boasts one of the country's two largest breweries, Pivo-varna Union. Over recent years, Ljubljana and the Cen-tral Slovenia region have seen, in line with international trends, the establishment of an increasing number of microbreweries producing excellent craft beers in small batches and catering also for special tastes.

During the three-hour beer lover's experience of Lju-bljana, you will taste eight different beers made by five different breweries, two based in Ljubljana and three elsewhere in Central Slovenia. Before rounding off your experience at the Union pub, you will take a tour of Pivovarna Union's Brewery Museum. The museum, a recipient of the European Museum Forum's EMYA Award, provides a historical overview of beer-making, gives an insight into cooperage, beer distribution, and beer raising and dispensing equipment, and displays two room reconstructions allowing you to retrace the story of the Pivovarna Union brewery from 1864 to the present day. Definitely an interesting, trendy, dynamic, and sociable experience.

14 | Ljubljana - Guided tours for groups www.visitljubljana.com | 15

Major experiences• Castle vineyard• Wine tasting of wines from three wine-growing

regions

What is included?• Expert guidance,• 3 wine tastings of Slovenian wines (3 varieties,

three wine-growing regions) and snacks• A funicular ride to Ljubljana Castle.

Slovenia is a land of superior quality wines, and Ljubljana is the ’City of Vine and Wine’. Taste the selected wines of three Slovenian wine regions and fall in love with the capital city of Ljubljana, where the Mediterranean, Karst, Alps, and Pannonian basin meet.

Ljubljana prides itself on the ’City of Vine and Wine’ title awarded by the Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin, an international wine association based in Paris. Many vine-yards used to grow here and today the heritage is main-tained through several traditional wine festivals and supe-rior quality wine offerings in many wine bars and wineries.

The Wine Tour in Ljubljana provides carefully selected wine stops where participants taste wines from three Slovenian wine regions (Podravje, Posavje and Primor-ska) while the expert comments of the guide provide a complete picture of Slovenian wine and viticulture, at the same time explaining why Ljubljana is a city of wine.

We start the wine experience at STIC in Ljubljana market where we take the funicular to climb up to the Ljubljana Castle. We take a look at the Ljubljana city or castle vine-yard where some 1050 vines of the Rdečegrajc (Zweigelt) and belpin (Chardonnay) varieties grow on the southern slope of the hill, and learn how the castle wine story ties in with the offspring of the Old Vine of Lent (at over 400 years of age, this is considered the oldest vine in the world) growing in the castle yard. Participants will learn about viticulture, discover many secrets, and taste the wines from Štajerska.

After the visit to the vineyard, we descend to the old city centre on foot where we walk past one of the small-est wineries in Ljubljana. This is followed with a tasting of wines and other treats from Dolenjska. We end the Wine Tour of Ljubljana in the winery next to the City Hall, where we are introduced to wines from Primorska. These selected wines from three wine-growing regions with 14 wine-growing districts are ranked among the best in the world with regard to quality. No less than 52 vine varieties grow here. 7 Exploring Ljubljana by Bicycle

16 | Ljubljana - Guided tours for groups www.visitljubljana.com | 17

Major sights and experiences• Ljubljana Old Town, Prule area, Ljubljana Botanic

Garden, Krakovo area, Tivoli Park, 19th century Ljubljana (the area west of the Slovenska cesta road), Metelkova Museum Quarter, Metelkova mesto alternative culture centre, Trubarjeva ulica street

• A 'Taste Ljubljana picnic' in the grass of a park

What is included?• Expert guidance• Bicycle and helmet hire• A snack

Compared to other capitals, Ljubljana is very small, very green, and very cyclist-friendly, which makes it a great place to explore by bicycle. This cycling tour takes you to a large number of attractive spots located just outside the heart of the city centre, allowing you to explore them in a healthy and pleasurable way.

The tour begins at the Slovenian Tourist Information Centre, where you will get a bicycle and a helmet. From there, your guide will lead you across Plečnik's Market and through Ljubljana Old Town, give you some brief information about all the city's major sights along the way, and then steer you to the pleasant green Ljubljanica embankments in the city's Prule area, a perfect place to take a break. Prule is the site of a revamped embankment known as Špica, whose name, translating as 'Pointed End', refers to its pointed shape. Špica was once used as the city beach, and its pleasant grassed and wooden surfaces still make it look like one today.

After a short rest, you will jump on your bicycle again and cross a bridge spanning the Gruber Channel to reach a green area including the Ljubljana Botanic Garden, one of Europe's oldest institutions of its kind and one of Ljubljana's most magnificent green gems. From there, you will pedal through the Krakovo area, a pearl in the crown of urban gardening in Ljubljana since the Middle Ages, and continue towards Tivoli Park. A ride along Plečnik's Promenade, which connects Tivoli Park to the city centre, will bring you to the central Slovenska cesta road, which has been closed to general traffic since 2015. You will pedal past the famous Nebotičnik building and continue towards one of Ljubljana's most unique attractions, the Metelkova mesto alternative culture centre. A ride along one of Ljubljana's oldest streets, the lovely little Trubarjeva ulica, which is full of food and drink outlets and tiny shops for alternative tastes, will bring you back to your starting point. During the tour, you will have time to enjoy a rest and a picnic snack.

8 Ljubljana Jogging Tour

18 | Ljubljana - Guided tours for groups www.visitljubljana.com | 19

Major sights and experiences• Green quays of Ljubljanica, Tivoli park, Rožnik.

What is included?• Expert guidance

The group will run about 8.5 kilometres while learning about Ljubljana at a relaxed pace, and get familiar with the green gems of Ljubljana. Seven stops will give you plenty of opportunity to rest and learn about green Ljubljana.

With over 20,000 active participants and many more cheerleaders, escorts and spectators, the Ljubljana marathon is now the biggest sports-recreation event in Slovenia, proving that Ljubljana is a true runner’s city. It has a strong sports identity, which is not surprising considering the numerous green spaces in the city cen-tre that are closed to traffic, and the extensive public parks in the greater city area (there are four landscape parks within the Ljubljana city limits) ensure that jog-ging in the city is extremely pleasant.

The group meets at TIC in Stritarjeva Street, warms up and moves from Cankar Quay to Cobbler’s Bridge to French Revolution Square, and then onwards to Congress Square. There is only a short run to Republic Square - to the area which uncovers the modern face of Ljubljana, and then on Šubičeva and Cankarjeva streets through Jakopič Promenade, past Tivoli Castle and with a slight climb to Rožnik - a forest-covered hill (391m high) which has been a popular destination for citizens since the beginning of the 19th century. We then drop through a picturesque wooded terrain to-wards Mostec and to Cekin Castle, continue on Puhar-jeva, Štefanova and Slovenska streets, which leads us back to the starting point. A great way to stay in trim while seeing Ljubljana from a different perspective and making great memories.

Although the main emphasis is on learning about Lju-bljana and the city’s sights - the tour has seven stops with informative commentary - we also calculated that participants will burn up 803 calories, which equals about two pieces of cake. However, remember that Lju-bljana has many pleasant corners where those calories may be quickly regained as you enjoy what the capital has to offer in the tastiest of ways.

Major sights and experiences:• Learning about the main sights of green

Ljubljana: Triple Bridge, Prešeren Square, green embankments of Ljubljanica, Trnovo Quay, Špica, Botanical Garden, Ljubljana Castle.

• Walk with Nordic walking poles, warming up, stretching games and learning the basic steps.

What is included?• Expert guidance• Nordic walking poles rental

Ljubljana has a strong identity as a romantic, culinary, and adventurous capital, but also as an active one. Due to its compact size, the city is perfect for exploring on foot. The Nordic Tour will lead us on a 7 kilometre trail on which we learn about Ljubljana and its main sights and stories in a dynamic, but still relaxed, manner.

The group meets at TIC on Stritarjeva street, where each par-ticipant selects their Nordic walking poles and then we set off towards the Prešeren Square at a moderate initial pace. This is followed with a short stop while the guide immerses us in the history of Ljubljana, the city on a vibrant crossroads of diverse cultures, regions, and historic events. The guide reveals stories about the Triple Bridge and Prešeren Square, and then describes the trail and the course.

A relaxed walk follows on Hribar Quay to Breg, where we stop on the steps before the Hribar monument to properly warm up. We continue along the green margins of the Lju-bljanica River towards Krakovo Embankment, stopping briefly on Hradecki Bridge, where we learn about Krakovo, Trnovo and Trnovski pristan. Grab your poles again! We continue on Gruden Embankment towards Špica - the name comes from the spit of land created by the Ljubljanica at this location. Špica used to be a popular bathing place in Ljubljana. It still looks like a beach, with its pleasant green and wooded areas.

First, we share a story about the Ljubljanica, the river with sev-en names that is such a significant part of Ljubljana and which follows us for a great part of our journey. This is followed with some games and a presentation of three basic steps, and then we continue towards the Botanical Garden, the green heart of Ljubljana and one of the oldest of its kind in Europe. We walk past the Primula tea house towards the exit on Ižanska, and then to Karlovac Bridge. We give our cardiovascular systems a good workout by climbing the Castle hill, where we pass the castle vineyard (and stop to learn about it) and arrive at Plečnik’s Šance. One or two games follow with stretching exercises at the end of the climb. We walk through the avenue and past the peasant uprising monument, around the castle, and stop to enjoy the view over the city, Tivoli and Rožnik, and then we return to the TIC. There are several drinking fountains along the way so we can refresh ourselves.

In 2017, Ljubljana marked the 145th anniversary of the birth and the 60th anniversary of the death of the great and world-renowned architect from Ljubljana, Jože Plečnik. This guided bicycle tour will take you on a dynamic, but relaxed discovery of the life and work of Plečnik beyond the city centre.

Jože Plečnik (1872 - 1957) from Ljubljana is one of the most important pioneers of modern architecture in the world. His creative work shaped the image of three long-established cities: Vienna, Prague, and particularly his birthplace, Lju-bljana, where his mark is so prominent and indelible that Plečnik’s Ljubljana as a unique city phenomenon is classi-fied among the most original and most important holistic artworks of the 20th century from a global perspective.

The bicycle tour of Plečnik’s Ljubljana starts in STIC at Lju-bljana market where we will be given a bike and a helmet, and then set off with our guide and ride across Plečnik’s market towards Navje Memorial Park, which is also called the northern city park, and was designed by Plečnik in the late 1930s. Then we reach Žale, the central cemetery in Lju-bljana, which is a true outdoor museum bearing Plečnik’s unique mark, and where you can feel the history and cul-ture of the local people. The trail will then lead us on cy-cling paths towards Šiška, all the way to the St. Francis Church and its special design. Plečnik derived this from his design for the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord in Prague. Plečnik occasionally added new elements to the church even when it was already in use. Back on the bike and we head towards Tivoli, the central park which is considered the green lung of Ljubljana. The park’s original layout dates back to 1813, but Jože Plečnik redesigned it between 1921 and 1939 and also created the connection between the end of Cankarjeva Street and Tivoli Castle.

Our next destination is the National and University Library (NUK), probably Plečnik’s most important work in Ljubljana, where we will treat ourselves to Plečnik’s tea and ginger-bread. We continue along the nicely landscaped embank-ments of the Ljubljanica River towards Trnovo and Plečnik’s House, where the architect lived and created from 1921 until his death in 1957. This is the place where Plečnik’s Ljubljana was born. The architect’s home has all its original interior and exterior and a permanent exhibition. We finish our joint cycling trail at the starting point.

Major sights and experiences• Hauptman House, Urbanc House, Hotel Union,

Cooperative Bank building, Mladika building

What is included?• Expert guidance

This tour offers you a detailed insight into most of the Art Nouveau attractions located in the city centre of Ljubljana.

Ljubljana is a city of diverse architectural styles, all of them remarkable witnesses of its rich history. This tour focuses on the period at the turn of the 20th century, when a local variant of the style generally known as Art Nouveau developed in Slovenia under the direct influence of the Viennese Secession and contributed numerous important architectural sights to the city-scape of Ljubljana.

The first major work of Art Nouveau architecture in Lju-bljana was the Dragon Bridge, built in 1901. Today, the bridge is considered to be the city's best-known sight, and the dragons adorning it Ljubljana's most recogniz-able icon. Did you know that the Dragon Bridge was originally supposed to be adorned with winged lions instead of dragons? The first decade of the 20th cen-tury also saw the construction of most of Ljubljana's Art Nouveau buildings, located along the Miklošičeva ulica street, between the historical city centre and the railway station.

This Art Nouveau-themed walk takes you past the majority of Ljubljana's most typical Art Nouveau buildings, notably including those in the area of the Slovenski trg square and Miklošič Park, designed by the architect Maks Fabiani, the famous Grand Hotel Union, Ljubljana's first modern and, at the time of its construction, largest hotel, which continues to retain its distinctive Art Nouveau style, and the Cooperative Bank, one of the city's most interesting buildings. You will also visit the central Prešernov trg square to see the Centromerkur department store and Hauptman House, both designed in the Art Nouveau style.

Art Nouveau sought inspiration in the plant and animal kingdom, folklore motifs, exotic cultures and religions, and geometric patterns, so expect to see an intensely colourful and creative face of Ljubljana.

Major sights and experiences• House, where France Prešeren lived, lyceum

where Valentin Vodnik worked, Lili Novy house, Blaznik’s printing house

What is included?• Expert guidance

This guided walk traces the footsteps of poets, writers, national awakeners, and bohemians that left their mark on the collective memory and life of Ljubljana.

Due to its geographical position at the crossroads of the Germanic, Mediterranean, and South Slavic worlds, Ljubljana has always been at the confluence of differ-ent cultures. Throughout its history, it has been home to sensitive individuals able to assimilate different in-fluences and create works of art reflecting their time. Apart from that, it was poets and writers that have, in the eyes of the nation, historically replaced the politi-cal elite.

It is therefore no wonder that Ljubljana's central town square, where you will embark on this circular walk, is dominated by a monument to a poet, France Prešeren. Your walk will take you on a journey from the 16th cen-tury, when Primož Trubar published the first book ever written in Slovenian, to the end of the 20th century and the death of the writer Lojze Kovačič.

You will be able to see both the existing buildings that were once home to Slovenian authors and the sites of those long gone. You can choose between two routes, Blue and Orange. More specific information about the two of them will be given to you on booking.

Boat cruise

Major sights and experiences• Views of Ljubljana's numerous bridges from the

river, views of Plečnik's Market from the river, newly revamped Ljubljanica embankments, Špica embankment

What is included?• Expert guidance• Boat cruise

Tourist boats are an opportunity to experience the historical city centre of Ljubljana, with its famous bridges, picturesque façades, and green embankments, from a completely different angle. A very relaxed cruise with stunning views all along the way.

Not many European capitals have a river that would be so deeply connected to the city as the river Ljubljanica is to the heart and soul of the historical city centre of Ljubljana. This 'River of Seven Names' has always been of particular importance to the city. From Roman times to the introduction of the railway in the mid-19th cen-tury, it was a major trade and supply route, and today, its bed is considered to be one of Slovenia's most im-portant archaeological sites. On its way to Ljubljana, the Ljubljanica crosses the unique protected natural area of the Ljubljana Marshes Landscape Park, which lies right at the entrance to the city and provides a link between city and nature.

This boat cruise also sheds light on many other stories and offers exceptional views of medieval streets, build-ings with uneven roofs, and creations left behind by the famous architect Jože Plečnik. Did you know that Ljubljana owes its distinctive appearance precisely to Plečnik, who built the Ljubljanica embankments in the historical city centre and laid out the riverside areas with tree-lined walks? From the deck of the boat, you will see Plečnik's Market. The architect also built or re-vamped a number of bridges on the Ljubljanica and its tributaries, such as the Trnovo Bridge, the Cobblers' Bridge, and the central Triple Bridge, which all tell sto-ries about their history, contribute to the city's unique appearance, and justify Ljubljana's reputation as a city of bridges. During an hour-long cruise, the boat will take you all the way to the revamped Špica embank-ment, which once served as the city beach and is now a popular riverside spot for people to get together.
