Method Of Operation - 240A/308A/339A/4800 SeriesGuided Boring Machine (GBM) equipment is used with pipe outside diameters from 4 to 48 inches. The Guided Boring Method is a trenchless installation method for small diameter pipes with the grade and alignment precision the gravity sewer and water industry demand. The pipe installation involves a three-step process starting with launch and reception shafts strategically located to minimize surface disruption.

For gravity sewer installation, where line and grade accuracy are paramount, the Akkerman Guided Boring Machine provides the precision needed for consistent success. The Akkerman Guided Boring Machine is available in three jacking frame configurations; one is a SINGLE STAGE frame (240A) with 48” stroke cylinders designed for 8 foot by 12-foot trench box operation. The second is the LATCHING FRAME (308A/339A) designed to work in 8 or 9 foot round shaft operations. The latching frame is set up with 10-1/2 stroke cylinders and latching pins to advance the tooling the length of the frame. The 240A, 308A and 339A frames are a robust design capable of providing 100 tons of jacking force and 50 tons of pull back force with 10,000 foot pounds of rotational torque available through the gear box. The third frame is the 4800 Series jacking frame and is designed for a minimum 13-foot round or trench box shaft and installing up to 48” OD pipe. The frame is equipped with 30” or 40” stroke cylinders and a 12-inch latching pin position system to install 1 meter, 2 meter and 8 foot length pipe (optional frame extensions are available to handle 10 foot or 20 foot length pipe). This frame has 265 tons of jacking force and 100 tons of pull back force with 26,000 foot pounds of rotational torque available through the gear box.

Two individual control valves provide smooth independent control of the jacking cylinders and the rotational hydraulic drive motor. For ease of monitoring the machine’s operation, hydraulic gauges are mounted in the operator’s line of sight to observe the jacking and rotational pressures.

The Akkerman Power Pack provides hydraulic power for the jacking frame. The P100Q is equipped with a 4.5-liter diesel engine which drives two load sensing, variable volume, and torque limiting piston pumps. Each system provides 0 to 34 gpm at 5,000 psi operating pressure. The P150Q is also equipped with a 4.5-liter diesel engine driving three load sensing, variable volume, and torque limiting piston pumps. Each system provides the following hydraulic

flow: two pumps (rotation/cutter bit) 0 to 34 gpm at 5,000 psi, and one pump (jacking) 0 to 26 gpm at 6,000 psi. The P250D is equipped with a 6.8-liter diesel engine driving three load sensing, variable volume, and torque limiting piston pumps. Each system provides the following hydraulic flow: 0 to 60 gpm at 5,000 psi (rotation), 0 to 50 gpm at 5,000 psi (cutter bit), and 0 to 25 gpm at 6,000 psi (jacking).

The power unit is set away from the immediate work area and hydraulic hoses run between the power pack and the jacking frame. The power pack is operated from the launch shaft using a pendant control. The unit has a control pendant so the operator in the launch shaft can control the power pack and monitor vital engine functions. STEP 1: PRECISE INSTALLATION OF PILOT TUBES

The first step in the Guided Boring Method is the installation of the pilottubes on line and grade.

The pilot tubes are inserted through the ground from the launch shaft to the reception shaft.

On the leading end of the pilot tube is the steering head with an angled tip.

Theodolite/Camera, Sighted DownCenter of Pilot Tubes

In the steering head is a battery powered LED illuminated target that is visible to the operator by means of a theodolite, camera, and monitor.The theodolite is set on line and grade and is positioned to view the target through the bore of the pilot tube with the cross hairs of the theodolite visible on the monitor along with the illuminated target. The operator rotates the steering head as needed to maintain the desired line and grade. This step is complete when the steering head reaches the reception shaft.The pilot tubes are a dual walled tube design. This provides a means to lubricate the pilot shaft as it passes through the ground. This lubrication reduces the force required to thrust and rotate during installation.

GBM_MethodOfOperation

The second step is to follow the pilot tube with a reaming head and or abearing swivel joint to match the diameter of the product pipe. The GBM installs pipe from 4 inch to 48 inch OD.Different types of tooling are available to work in various ground conditions.

The reaming head and auger casings are attached to the pilot tubes and the jackingframe advances the reaming head and casings into the ground.

With the addition of each section of auger and casings in the launch shaft, a section of pilot tube is removed from the reception shaft. The process continues until the auger and casings reach the reception shaft at which point all the pilot tube sections have been removed.

The third step is installation of the product pipe. A pipe adapter is installed on the last section of auger casing to match the product pipe.

As the pipe is thrust into place, the auger casings are removed from the reception shaft. This process continues until the product pipe reaches the reception shaft.

With the installation of the product pipe, the job is complete with minimal impact and disruption to activities in the immediate area.

If a Powered Cutter Head (PCH) or Powered Reaming Head (PRH) is used, it is placed behind the casings and augers and before the final product pipe. The auger spoil flow is reversed toward the reception shaft for removal.

Common pins secure the round or square shaft adapters to the

frame end assemblies.

The hydraulic make-up tool is used to tighten each section of pilot tubes as they are installed in the launch shaft. In pull

back operation, the make-up tool is used to separate the pilot tubes in the launch shaft.Three roller bracket assemblies support the

line and weight of the temporary casing and product pipe in the launch shaft.

The monitor assembly contains the computer with an outdoor flat screen for viewing the illuminated target in the steering head. The target image can be adjusted with the gain, exposure, zoom, and image centering controls. You can also keep track of the number of pipes that have

been pushed into the drive with the on-screen pipe counter. The monitor assembly case can be used as a sun visor for

reducing the glare on the monitor screen.

The area in yellow illustrates the fluid path through the dual pilot tubes to the steering head. The fluid flowing out the steering head and along

the side of the pilot tubes, reduces the ground friction on the pilot tubes. This fluid lubrication

reduces jacking force and rotational torque which makes longer drive distances possible. Pilot Tube Cap And Plug

Maintains clean lubrication of the thread joint between pilot tube use. Protects the o-ring

sealing on the inner tube while in storage. The thread joint can be lubricated as the pilot tubes

are removed so they are ready for the next drive.

Pilot tube cap and plug protects the threads during transport and storage.

Dual o-rings at the inner tube seals the connection between the pilot tubes.

The inner tube is treated to resist corrosion assuring a good seal at the

mating surface to the o-rings.

Each pilot tube contains a valve assembly that restricts the fluid from flowing during the installation of the next pilot tube. Fluid can be supplied from the launch shaft or the reception

shaft depending on the job requirements.

To lock and unlock the pilot tubes, two parallel dual slots are located on each end of the pilot tube to work

in conjunction with tooling on the jacking frame.
