Whilecompletingyourfieldwork,capstone,andcourses,itisrecommendedbytheAssociationofSchoolsandProgramsofPublicHealth(ASPPH)thatyoudevelopthefollowingcompetenciesinglobalhealth:

SummerInternships:ManyMPHstudentsareinterestedinasummerinternshiporresearchexperienceaftertheirfirstyear.Globalhealth-relevantexperiencescanbefoundwithdomesticandinternationalorganizations.MPHstudentsdesiringaninternationalexperienceshouldstronglyconsiderapplyingtoPenn’sInternationalInternshipProgram(IIP)whichofferstravel-fundedinternshipswithpartnerorganizationsinseveralcountries.DomesticexperiencescanbefoundwithglobaldevelopmentorganizationsororganizationsthatreducehealthdisparitieswithintheU.S.Studentscanapplytoestablishedinternshipsorconductresearchprojectsoftheirown.Summerprojectscanoftenbeusedtowardsthefieldworkrequirementorcapstonewithadvancepreparation.Inthissectionoftheguide,youwillfindaselectionofinternational,domestic,established,andcapstoneinternshipstoconsiderwhenlookingforasummerinternship.

IfyouwouldliketocompleteasummerinternshipinPhiladelphia,considerapplyingtoanyoftheorganizationslistedundertheCapstonesectionofthisguide.

PennInternationalInternshipProgram(IIP)

TheUniversityofPennsylvaniaoffersafullyfunded8to12weeksummerinternshipforPennstudentsatorganizationsthatareaffiliatedwithPennAbroad.ThereisawidevarietyofplacementorganizationstochoosefromthataremainlynongovernmentalorganizationslocatedinLatinAmerica,Africa,Asia,andotherregions.TheBotswana-UPennPartnership(BUP),GuatemalaHealthInitiative,andCenterforAdvancedStudyofIndia(CASI)areexamplesofplacementsthataregreatforstudentsinterestedinworkingwithlocalorganizations.ThefulllistofplacementscanbeviewedonPennGlobal’swebsite.TheapplicationtoapplytoanyoftheseinternshipsthroughtheInternationalInternshipProgram(IIP)commonapplicationopensinNovember,withthedeadlinetoapplyinmid-January.ThereareinformationsessionsheldweeklyfromNovembertoJanuary.

2. Practicewithinyourabilities.Itiseasytooverestimateyourabilitiesortobelievethatanyhelpishelpwheninalowresourcesetting.Itisbesttoworkwithinyourabilitiesandaskforhelpfromyourlocalsupervisorsandfaculty.

3. Adequatelyresearchthecurrentevents,socialandculturalbeliefsofthecommunitybeforeenteringit.Anapproachsuitableinonecommunitymaynotbesuitableinanother.Conflictsinhealthbeliefsandpracticesmayarisethatresultinnoncomplianceormistrustofthehealthcaresystem.

4. Supportlocalcapacity.Itisimportanttopartnerwithandbolstertheworkofexistinglocalorganizationsinsteadofcompetingwiththem.
