Music Index Online:• Indexes Music periodicals from 1974
to the present• Covers over 800 international
music-related journals• Covers many different journals than
RILM, although some overlap does occur
• Tends to cover popular music-related periodicals more so than RILM
• NEW: Music Index now provides abstracts for recent entries
Access Music Index through the library webpage by clicking on the link to “Electronic Databases” (Or click on the “Resources by Subject” link, or select the “Subject Guides” tab, and choose “Music” from the lists of guides by subject):
Type “Music Index” in the search box, or click on the letter ‘M’ and see it listed as the last item:
Click on the title link to enter the database. Choose the to view a print guide to the database.:
Note: For off-campus access you will need to log-in with your myWSU ID and password.
To search both Music Index and RILM simultaneously, Select “Choose Databases” toward the top of the screen. Click the check box for the additional database and then click “OK.”:
From a new search screen, enter your term(s). This example searches for items about circular breathingAccept the default search and make no selection in the field on the right or search a specific field from the pull-down menu. (Note: DO NOT USE the “Linked Full Text” option.)
You may also limit your search by the options at the bottom of the screen (remembering NOT to use the “Linked Full Text” button) :
This search for “circular breathing” resulted in 44 records.
Author, journal, date, volume, issue and page numbers and extent are provided directly under the title.
Click on the WSU Full Text Finder link to see if a full text copy of the article is available online.
In this example the full text is not available online. (If full text is available online, links will automatically be provided or the article will appear directly. ) As seen below, the page then provides recommended steps to assist in locating a copy of the article. Next, try the ISSN link to see if a print subscription is available in Ablah Library. If not, you may click on the “Submit request” link to send a request to the Interlibrary Loan department, and so on, down the page.
A search may be further limited by the several options provided at the left of the screen. Again DO NOT USE the “Linked Full Text” option. When this option is checked it displays only those articles that appear with a full text option through the Music Index database. This excludes all other articles that the library may offer having full-text online through additional subscriptions. For example, it will exclude full-text articles found in JSTOR. If the “Link Full Text” is selected to refine or limit the search, no citations will be presented.
When limited to the Subject “Respiration,” the results include 23 records. Note the additional subjects in each entry as possible narrower or alternative paths for investigation:
