Project proposals, scripts, research material, productionfiles, photographs, and films document the "Westering" film project whichLamar co-developed in the 1970s.

Processing InformationCollections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable,their perceived research value, the availability of sta, competing priorities, and whether or not furtheraccruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for allcollections as they are acquired, and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections astime and resources permit.

This collection received preliminary processing at the time of acquisition in 1957, 1994, and 2002. Furtherorganization, rehousing and/or description was carried out in 2010. The collection is comprised ofmaterial formerly classed as Uncat WA MS Lamar, Uncat WA MS 177, and Uncat MSS 403. Variousacquisitions associated with the collection have not been merged and organized as a whole. Eachacquisition is described separately in the contents list below, according to month and year ofacquisition.

Information included in the Description of Papers note and Collection Contents section is drawnfrom information supplied with the collection and from an initial survey of the contents. Folder titlesappearing in the contents list below are often based on those provided by the creator or previouscustodian. Titles have not been verified against the contents of the folders in all cases. Otherwise, foldertitles are supplied by sta during initial processing.

Howard Roberts Lamar, 1923-Howard Roberts Lamar, historian of the trans-Mississippi West, was born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1923.He received a B.A. from Emory University in 1944, and a Masters (1945) and Ph.d. (1951) in History from YaleUniversity. He was an instructor at the University of Massachusetts and Wesleyan University between1945 and 1949, and taught at Yale from 1949 to 1994. He held a number of administrative positions at Yaleincluding chair of the Department of History 1962-1963 and 1967-1970, Dean of the College 1979-1985, andPresident of the University 1992-1993. He is Sterling Professor Emeritus of American History at Yale.

Scope and ContentsThe Howard Roberts Lamar papers document the research, writing, teaching, and administrativeactivities of Yale history professor Howard Lamar from the 1940s through 2000. Included in the papersare manuscript drafts of books, articles, speeches, and book reviews; lecture notes for history courses hetaught at Yale and other universities; topical and personal files; and correspondence. Project proposals,scripts, research material, production files, photographs, and films document the "Westering" film projectwhich Lamar co-developed in the 1970s.
