Where to GoWyandotte County has three cities within its boundaries: Kansas City, Bonner Springs and
Edwardsville. Whether you’re a new or established resident, it’s helpful to knowsome basic information about your community.
You’ll want to know where to get your driver’s license and where to register to vote. You’ll also need to know where to find the nearest post office, police station and hospital. If you have a dog or a cat, you’ll need to find out how and where to license it. You’ll need
to know when your trash will be picked up and if there is a public bus route near your home. Most information can be found at City Hall at 701 N. 7th St. The Wyandotte County Courthouse
is across the street to the west. Here’s information about where to conduct other business:
Area Agency on AgingThe Area Agency on Aging’s main office
is in suite 100 of the Security Bank building, located at 1300 N. 78th St. The agency offers various services for older adults who are at least 60 years old, including hot lunches and frozen meals on weekdays. The agency also sends case management workers into homes to help clients setup services to allow them to live at home. They also offer a Family Caregiver program, a service to provide relief to those who are taking 24-hour care of an older relative. Other services include an information line (913-573-8545) to help callers learn what’s available to meet their needs. For information on the location of nutrition sites, telephone 913-328-8542.
Auto registration,driver’s licenses
Anyone new to Wyandotte County can get new vehicle registrations and license plates in the Motor Vehicle Department at the Wyandotte County Courthouse Annex at 8200 State Avenue, or at the Wyandotte County Courthouse, 710 N. 7th St.
State law requires persons to transfer auto registrations and license plates within 90 days after moving here from out-of-state. New vehicles to the state also must be inspected by the Kansas Highway Patrol at the Motor Vehicle Examination station, located at the former information center on westbound I-70 just before the 78th Street exit. Patrol will require the vehicle, its title, driver’s license and a $10 fee.
Anyone who moves to the county from within Kansas can wait until licenses and registrations expire to renew them. However, drivers must call the Kansas Department of Motor Vehicles to update addresses.
The Kansas Department of Revenue has a website at www.ksrevenue.org that will make changes easier. Fill out the information on the site and include an e-mail address. You will receive an e-mail confirmation of the new address, which can be printed and carried with your license. One can also visit www.wycokck.org for more information, including a fee estimator that will give ballpark figures on the cost of registration and property taxes.
Roving tag teams set up checkpoints in the county periodically to inspect driver’s licenses, proofs of insurance and vehicle registrations. They also look for consistency in the names and addresses on the documents.
I f a dr iver doesn’t have proper documentation, has received a ticket for lack of it or has lived in the county for more than six months without updating registration and license, he or she may be ticketed and the vehicle may be towed.
Cars usually are towed only after a driver has received a warning ticket without resolving it; if a driver has lived here for at least six months without updating necessary documents; or if vehicle tags are expired. For more information on registering a vehicle, telephone 913-573-2821 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
Information about getting a Kansas driver’s license is available at the driver’s license examiner’s office at 1951 N. 63rd or by telephoning 913-287-2900. Hours are from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Tuesday through Friday.
