Guide to the Condition of Paintwork Damage (STS Codes 0918 & 0919)

With continual focus on referrals for repairing the interior paintwork of our containers

due to damage from commodities including chemical & scrap exports, please note the

following guide to the conditions that GLBEQUEMROPS considers damage in need

of repair and the STS code to apply when updating estimates in MERC+.

It is important to note that this guide does not give cluster EMR licence to decide if a

container needs to be repainted as referrals must still be made to GLBEQUEMROPS

for authorisation to either carry out repainting or evacuate units to the appropriate

facilities. It is intended that the examples found within this guide will streamline the

referrals process and reduce inaccuracies when creating MERC+ estimates.

Maersk Line does not make cosmetic repairs to containers in order to make them

look pretty for our customers. As long as the condition of the unit is within the

guidelines as established in MCIC (Maersk Container Inspection Criteria) then it will

be fit for use with exports.

    Definition of STS codes 0918 & 0919

0918 - Partial blasting/repainting (only after CPHs approval) This is defined as

repair with the use of shot blasting machinery to remove paint

0919 -Mechanical cleaning (scrap off paint/glue) (Only after CPHs approval) This

is defined as repair with the use of grinding discs, scrapers and hand tools to remove

    paint

    Refurbishment Facilities

Presently, Maersk Line has approved two facilities globally to carry out 0918 repairs,

one in each of Qingdao, China (CNTST) and Bangkok, Thailand (THBKK). All

authorized 0918 repairs must be evacuated to one of these facilities, with the

corresponding cluster EMR department notified that containers are being sent for

evacuation. RKEM must also be updated with the correct damage code.

It is important for clusters to ensure that units which should be declared TTL are not

    evacuated for repair.

    E-Mail Referral Format

When referring containers for authorisation the following details must be included in

    all e-mails:

    Container numberYear of manufacture

    Equipment type

    Current container location

Last commodity shipped in the unit

    Repair limit

    Status of third party recovery

Brief description of the condition of the unit

    Cluster EMR recommendation

All referrals should be accompanied by photographs of the condition of the interior of

    the container being referred.

    Third Party Recovery

As with all cases where damage is found, cluster EMR is required to recover costs

    from responsible third parties.

    Condition without Need of Repair

Below are examples of damage that we consider does not need repainting. Note that

general abrasion, scraping and low level corrosion such as that seen here will not

transfer to cargo and should not pose the possibility of long term physical damage to

    the container itself.

    Condition Requiring 0919 Mechanical Cleaning

Below are examples of damage that we consider should be repaired through

mechanical cleaning (STS code 0919). Note that damage is localized to smaller areas

on their own in isolation and not spread across the surface area of the interior of thecontainer.

    Condition Requiring 0918 Partial blasting/repainting

Below are examples of damage that we consider can only be repaired through

refurbishment (STS code 0918). Note that damage is widespread and is highly likely

to transfer to cargo so shippers are likely to reject receipt of equipment.
