INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Administrative History (2.7): Bentley University is an accredited institution with a

significant focus on providing business education. It was founded, as the Bentley School

of Accounting and Finance, by Harry C. Bentley in 1917. Originally located in Boston, the

school moved to its current Waltham campus in 1968. As the school evolved from offering

night classes for potential accountants to offering accredited graduate and undergraduate

degrees, it underwent several name changes. In 1961, the school received authorization to

grant the degree of B.S. in Accounting, and the school’s name was changed to Bentley

College of Accounting and Finance. In 1971, authorization was given to grant B.S. degrees

in all business disciplines, as well as B.A. and honorary degrees; the name of the school

was then changed to Bentley College. Finally, in 2008 the Commonwealth of

Massachusetts changed the school’s status, allowing it to become Bentley University.

Scope and Content (3.1): This collection contains documents produced or published by

Bentley University. Many of these publications, like the Vale yearbook and the school’s

catalogs and handbooks, document the activities of the university and the matriculation

of its students. Others, like the Bentley Alumnus/Observer and the Bottom Line, provide

information and writing geared to specific groups of Bentley community members.

Finally, still other publications are the result of the efforts of university offices or faculty,

including such items as the journal Business in the Contemporary World, and the New

England Speaker Sourcebook.

Series 1, Yearbooks: Contain names and photos of students and faculty, as well as

candid photos, records of on-campus events, and pages dedicated to student

organizations.

Series 2, Newspaper: The student-run campus newspaper, documenting daily life

on campus, as well as local and national issues. The newspaper contains

photographs, op-ed columns, and documentation of major campus events.

Series 3, Commencement Programs: Distributed at both graduate and

undergraduate ceremonies, commencement programs are a record of the

ceremony itself. Programs include graduate names and degrees conferred, special

awards, and a list of events.

Series 4, Catalogs and Handbooks: Created for a myriad of Bentley programs,

these publications outline courses available on campus, and document university

policy on a number of issues. The catalogs and handbooks are a resource for

information about academic requirements, campus policies, scheduling

procedures, and more.

Series 5, Campus and Alumni Directories: Campus directories include names,

office locations, and phone numbers (as available) for departments and individuals

working at Bentley. Alumni directories are a resource for graduated students to

provide updated contact information for their peers.

Series 6, Alumni Magazine: The alumni magazine contains class news updates

and articles profiling alumni, current students, and other Bentley community

members. Features focus on impactful work being done on and off-campus and

include information about opportunities for engagement with Bentley.

Series 6, Subseries 1, Observer Alumni Update: The Update was created

to provide alumni with timely updates about their classmates and the goings-on of

the university in between the release of issues of the full length Alumni Observer.

Like the traditional Observer, the Update contains class notes, a calendar of

campus events, and profiles of issues relating to alumni.

Series 7, Faculty/Staff Newsletter: This newsletter contains information about

those working at the university and issues pertaining to them. Features profile new

hires and job openings, provide updates on recent work and changes to

administrative structure or benefits, and keep faculty and staff aware of issues on

campus.

Series 8, Record of Faculty Achievement: This annual publication alerted the

campus to the work of faculty both on and off-campus. Departments submitted

material about their faculty members including degrees earned, areas of

specialization, articles or books published, and speaking engagements.

Departments also provided general updates on their work for students.

Series 9, New Student Record: Often known as the original “face book”, the New

Student Record allowed incoming freshmen to submit photos and brief

descriptions of themselves. This was a resource that allowed students to begin

acquainting themselves with one another before, or just after arriving for their first

semester on campus.

Series 10, News of Bentley / Bentley in the News: Assembled by Public Relations,

this publication is an amalgamation of clippings, articles, and other news items

involving the university.

Series 11, Business Journals: As a result of its focus on business education,

Bentley has published or co-published several industry journals over the years.

Subseries 1, Business in the Contemporary World: Co-published with the

Faculty of Administrative Studies at York University in Toronto, this journal

published articles relating to issues of business, economics, and social

policy.

Subseries 2, Kent/Bentley Journal of Accounting and Computers: First

known as the Kent/Bentley Review, was a joint publication of both the

University and the Kent Publishing Company. It was created to address the

issue of integrating computing into business education. Articles focused on

how “microcomputers” could be used in the classroom or for assignments,

and addressed other issues relating to developing trends in business

education at the time.

Subseries 3, Bentley Business and Economic Review: This journal,

published by the university’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research,

was created as a way for Bentley faculty and other community members to

contribute their scholarship to the greater business community in

Massachusetts and beyond.

Series 12, New England Heritage Center Publications: The NEHC was an

organization created to bring awareness to cultural heritage resources available to

the academic community in New England.

Subseries 1, The New England Speaker Sourcebook: A directory of

specialists, academics, and other professionals who were available to

present on their topics of research on New England culture and history.

Subseries 2, The New England Historical Resources Catalog: A resource

documenting local heritage institutions and sites.

Series 13, Miscellaneous Publication: Over the years, other books, journals, and

published material have been produced by the university for shorter periods of

time. These are contained in this series.

Subseries 1, Bentley: A 75-Year Portrait: A “coffee table” book with photos

of campus buildings, and a general overview of the history of the university.

Subseries 2, Bentley Views: A promotional publication that existed early

in Bentley history. This view book style pamphlet consists mostly of

photographs of classrooms, buildings, and other campus resources.
