COMPANY OF THE YEAR

2010 AWARD SHORTLISTS

The 2010 World Demolition Awards are built on

the success of the Demolition Summit, first held

last year in Amsterdam. A large number of entries

were submitted from leading demolition contractors

around the world. As last year, an international

panel of acknowledged industry experts have

deliberated long and hard to produce the shortlists

detailed below for each of the 12 award categories.

Cantillon, Watford, UKDrawing on decades of experience, the year has seen specialist demolition contractor Cantillon do more than simply develop as a company. Summoning decades of experience, it introduced game-changing technology that measures noise, vibration and dust nuisance in real time, took safety and health to new heights, achieved record levels of recycling and integrated demolition fully into the construction process.

EDS, Sheffield, UKEstablished for over a decade, EDS has become one of the most successful and major decommissioning contractors in the business; providing the skills, resources and flexibility to deliver all types of projects safely on programme and within budget. The company offers specialist dismantling and demolition services with a focus on client satisfaction, superior safety standards and a company ethos of teamwork. Over the past few years, the company has broadened its services into land remediation, recognising that post demolition there is a need to clean the land for redevelopment and reuse.

Erith Contractors Ltd, Erith, UKThe company maintained growth despite a global recession; successfully completed Europe’s largest demolition project; its managing director is president of the UK’s National Federation of Demolition Contractors, a Fellow of the Institute of Demolition

General Smontaggi, San Pietro Mosezzo, ItalyGeneral Smontaggi has invested over the years in the resources required to become highly skilled in decommissioning, which it sees as being as the sum of demolition and land reclamation. This is an evolution of the role of contractor into a single partner for the customer, resolving all issues of responsibility, speed and costs of the worksite. It celebrated its first 25 years in business in 2009 and is a leader in Italy where decommissioning is concerned.

Engineers, and a board member of the US National Demolition Association; it was voted one of the Top 100 Small Companies to Work For by the UK’s Sunday Times newspaper; it has won honours from safety and training; and is accredited to ISO9001 and ISO14001 standards.

CONTRACT OF THE YEAR

Lawson Demolition; Orb Steelworks, UKThe former Orb Steelworks is a project unlike no other. The sheer size of the project, the number of challenges faced and overcome by Lawson Group while still completing the works to a high environmental standard and to the satisfaction of the client makes it an outstanding example of the way a demolition contract should be run. The site itself was an iconic and historically fascinating group of buildings, with its demolition significant to all as the end of an industrial era. Its demolition also represented a huge step forward in terms of redevelopment for the community within which the site is based.

Armac Demolition Ltd; Wolvercote Viaduct, UKArmac Demolition Ltd was shortlisted by the judges for the work it conducted on the A34 Wolvercote Viaduct road bridge in Oxfordshire, UK. The A34 is a major arterial route within the UK road network travelling from the M40 to the M4 and M3 motorways, providing a direct link to the major ports of Southampton and Portsmouth. Approximately 70,000 vehicles cross the viaduct every day.

Euro Dismantling Services; Becancour magnesium plant, CanadaIn a contract to the value of £30 million, EDS offered owner Norsk Hydro a turnkey industrial asset management solution – EDS purchased the plant from Norsk and then demolished, dismantled and decontaminated the site. It then sold on the process equipment to a customer in China, to whom the plant was eventually shipped. EDS spent 12 months dismantling the process equipment, after which the remaining buildings on site were demolished over an additional 12 months. The project was delivered on time, with 45,000 tonnes of metal and equipment being recovered.

Despe SpA; River Po road bridge, ItalyItalian contractor Despe’s deconstruction of the only bridge over the River Po connecting the provinces of Lodi and Piacenza has been shortlisted by the panel. Despe was contracted by the Italian authorities because of its preparation and experience of operating under emergency conditions. The 1 km bridge had suffered a collapse for reasons that are still subject to judicial proceedings. The collapse had caused great inconvenience to the local population since it was the only road connection between the two provinces. Despe was contracted with the objective to remove the collapsed bridge in the briefest possible time while preserving the natural environment of the river Po, Italy’s greatest watercourse.

Cuddy Group; Coed Darcy petrochemical plant, UKA prime example of Cuddy’s multi-disciplined approach to large-scale, complex projects is its recently completed 52-week demolition contract at Coed Darcy, West Wales.

Appointed to demolish 80,000 ft2 of disused petrochemical plant, offices and associated service buildings on the 1,060-acre former BP oil refinery site, Cuddy has paved the way for St. Modwen’s £1.2bn, 20-25 year brownfield regeneration master plan – one of the largest in Europe at present. The work was complicated by the presence of operational railway lines adjacent to the site.

NASDI; Harvard Fogg Museum, USANASDI carried out a major project during renovation work at the prestigious Harvard Fogg Museum, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The scope of work included the removal of all hazardous materials, selective demolition and bracing of the exterior wall of the original 1927-built building. The company also carried out the complete structural demolition of 1991 additions. This latter phase called for extra care to be taken, with close proximity to pedestrian pavements and utilities during the removal of foundations.

Lloyds Construction Services, USALloyds Construction Services is another recognised by the panel for the outstanding safety culture it has established company-wide that underlies all its activities. “Safety… it does not just happen” is the slogan that illustrates clears the company’s attitude to the health and safety of its workforce.

To illustrate the success of its efforts, many national organisations across the USA have recognised LCS and it has gained several coveted safety awards through the Associated Builders and Contractors.

American DND, USAAmerican DND has been shortlisted for the safety Award because of the safety measures it out in place for the work carried out on the cooling tower at the DOE Savannah River site near Aiken, South Carolina. The drilling preparation, implosion of the Tower with explosives and subsequent cleanup/size reduction/loadout activities presents unique exposures to personnel for silica and nuisance dust.

Despe SpA, Caorso nuclear power station, ItalyDespe has been shortlisted for a second project, this time the decommissioning of the Caorso nuclear power station during which new methodologies and technologies were developed for equipment dismantling, and for handling potentially contaminated systems and contaminating operations.

Dorton Group, UKDorton has been recognised by the judges because of the stringent safety culture it has put in place to underpin all its activities. Its safety management systems have been developed over a short period but benefit from experience gained over four decades of practical hands on experience by its safety director and staff. It is a registered company to OHSAS 18001:2007 and has recently successfully undertaken its year two external audit by the British Safety Council. Dorton is also a registered company holding BS EN ISO 9001:2008 and BS EN ISO 14001:2004.

SAFETY IN DEMOLITION AWARD

O’Rourke Wrecking, USAAnother recognised for the establishment of a strong safety culture, as is evidenced by the following extract from its entry submission. “Our combination of ownership and employee commitment to safety has resulted in the most important fact that everyone goes home safely. With nearly a half century of work under our belts, we have accomplished our proudest achievement - 4,000,000 man-hours without a fatality or serious injury.”

R Baker & Son, USAWith six consecutive years of non-recordable OSHA incidents, R Baker & Son is another whose safety culture caught the judges’ eyes. A record such as this can only be accomplished through dedication to safety and the teamwork of employees, subcontractors and clients. During 2009, R. Baker & Son amassed over 200,000 work hours without an OSHA recordable incident/accident.

Cantillon, UKGoing to great lengths to ensure the wellbeing of its workforce, Cantillon has made Health & Safety a company philosophy. Comprehensive training is crucial to its ethos, and behavioural safety training, once the preserve of managers, has been rolled out to all staff. This ensures that everyone takes responsibility for onsite safety, resulting in a supremely low accident incidence.

General Smontaggi, ItalyGeneral Smontaggi has always considered safeguarding the safety and the health of its employees as a fundamental part of every activity. A constant commitment to training and informing its employees, the careful choice of methods and equipment, the adoption and the development of internal procedures and the continuous renewal of the Arrangements for Individual Protection positions General Smontaggi in the forefront also in this sector. Over the years, even before rules made it obligatory, the company has taken steps to carry out numerous studies at its worksites to minimise the consequences of noise, vibrations, and dust on the health of its workers.

Despe SpA, ItalyThe judging panel shortlisted Italian contractor for the innovative safety measures and working practises that it put in place to protect both its employees and the surrounding environment during the demolition of a chimney at ENEL’s Archimide Power Station in Priolo, Sicily. The chimney’s internal lining, which had to be demolished first, had become contaminated by polluted dust over time, requiring the chimney to be hermetically sealed during its demolition by a remote control device suspended from a crane that carried out the actual demolition.

Advanced Explosives Demolition Inc; West Palm Beach towerImplosion team of Eric and Lisa Kelly brought down a hurricane-damaged tower in West Palm Beach, Florida, USA. Built in 1973, the tower was, at that time, the tallest residential building in the state of Florida.

The structure had been unoccupied for more than five years. Advanced Explosives Demolition’s (AED) Eric Kelly used strategically placed controlled explosives to reduce the high rise to a pile of rubble.

The design called for over 2,400 bore holes which The BG Group (GC) drilled in preparation for the placement of 586 kg (1,290 lb) of Unimax dynamite explosives on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th , ts” and 23rd floors of the tower.

GC also saw-cut the shear walls and columns in preparation for the shot. Universal Engineering Services, Inc. from Lake Worth, FL performed the pre-blast survey and seismic monitoring for the implosion. AED’s 3-man team loaded the entire structure in just 4 days.

American DND/Controlled Demolition Inc; Savannah River cooling towerAmerican DND was the prime/general demolition contractor for the implosion and subsequent debris loadout of the ‘K’ Area Hyperbolic Cooling Tower, (the world’s second largest) located at the DOE Savannah River Site near Aiken, South Carolina. Controlled Demolition Inc actually carried out the blowdown. The Tower was approximately 138 m by 100 m (455 ft tall by 330 ft) diameter at the base, contained approximately 13,000 yd3 of concrete, which equates to over 52 million pounds.

The Tower also contained approximately 19,500 yards (200 truckloads) of PVC fill and PVC piping. Additionally, the Tower included approximately 1,400 tons of rebar, steel, stainless steel and other metals. All materials were disposed of onsite at the SRS Construction & Demolition Debris Landfill.

EXPLOSIVE DEMOLITION AWARD

Advanced Explosives Demolition Inc; Champlain BridgeAED has been shortlisted for a second blowdown. The Champlain Bridge (also known as the Crown Point Bridge) was a 2,184 feet (666 m) long vehicular bridge in the USA that traversed Lake Champlain between Crown Point, New York and Chimney Point, Vermont. It opened to traffic in 1929 as a toll bridge; the tolls were removed in 1987.

The bridge was closed due to safety concerns in October 2009 and was taken down by Advanced Explosive Demolition (AED) on December 28, 2009. A new span will be built in its place.

Eurovia Beton GmbH; Boxberg Power Station Eurovia has been shortlisted for the explosive demolition of two 300 m (984 ft) reinforced concrete chimneys at the Boxberg power station in Germany that were only 100 m (328 ft) apart. Eurovia blasted the two at three levels to ‘fold’ the chimneys and reduce the height of the fall. More than 6,000 boreholes were drilled in the two chimneys, which each had a mass of 24,000 tonnes. The resulting debris was all recycled.

CAEM sas; Constantine football stadium, AlgeriaCAEM was shortlisted for its implosion of a football stadium with the following dimensions 14 x 15 x 110 m (46 x 49 x 361 ft), 10 m (33 ft) from inhabited houses (2 to 6 floors) in the centre of the city of Constantine in Algeria. The stadium, constructed in 1948, had all bearing structures in reinforced concrete. During the blasting, inhabitants within 50 m from the stadium were evacuated from their homes and the ones from 50 to 150 m were not allowed to stand in the open air. A 150 m traffic exclusion zone was established around the stadium prior to the blowdown.

Fabio Bruno Construcoes Ltda; Presidio Frei Caneca Prison, BrazilFabio Bruno has been shortlisted for carrying out the largest implosion in Brazil to date, the eight building Presidio Frei Caneca prison complex, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The period for the implosion of the 33,920 m³ of structures was of 45 calendar days from the start order, which was given on January 30, 2010, which led to a race against time to perform all the preparations in time. The implosion took place on March 13, 2010 as planned.

Technical Demolition Services Ltd; Sighthill tower blocks, UKTechnical Demolition Services Limited successfully and safely undertook Scotland’s biggest ever blast, high-rise, tower block explosive demolition utilising the world’s first ever autoprogrammable electronic Hotshot detonation system. At 02:00a.m., 29th November 2009 in Glasgow, Scotland, three pairs of 20-storey double tower blocks, each 55 m high (180 ft) comprising an estimated 100,000 tonnes of reinforced concrete and masonry, were blown down with precision. By using the Hotshot electronic (digital) detonation system, TDS’s innovative planning proved to provide complete success to a project situated in a critically confined urban residential location.

City Demolition Contractors (Birmingham) Ltd; Edgbaston International Cricket Ground, UKThe judging panel selected City Demolition for the Industrial Demolition Award shortlist for the work it carried out at the Edgbaston cricket ground in Birmingham, UK. This involved the identification and disposal of asbestos, soft stripping and the dismantling of a number of stands, which were abutting/adjacent to live spectator stands. Demolition was carried out to floor slab level, all non-crushable material was removed and disposed of at recycling facilities. The slab was then broken up and excavated and all foundations removed. These were then crushed on site to a structural specification and compacted to provide the main contractor with a level surface free from obstructions and obstacles.

Erith Contractors Ltd; Lafarge cement factory, UKIf ever a contract was created to test the expertise, knowledge, flexibility and resourcefulness of a demolition contractor, the demolition of the former Lafarge Cement UK PLC works at Northfleet in Kent was that contract. In fact, a list of the key elements of the project reads like a catalogue of potential pitfalls. Surrounded by housing on three sides and bisected by a public footpath, the project covered an area of 34 hectares and comprised 70 individual buildings and structures, many of them excessively over-engineered. Bordered along one side by the River Thames, the project included asbestos removal, high reach and remote deconstruction, heavy industrial demolition and several explosive demolition elements, all while satisfying the contractual and environmental demands of an ever-present client, a watchful Environment Agency, and a concerned local community.

INDUSTRIAL DEMOLITION AWARD

Despe SpA; Turbigo power station, ItalyCarrying out partial power plant dismantling while the plant is still operational is a challenge that requires technical and logistical skills. Despe has been shortlisted in this category because it overcame this challenge during dismantling operations at the Edipower power station in Turbigo near Milan. The objective was to remove four heat exchangers, the exhaust gas system, a 93 m (305 ft) square tube chimney and its supporting truss structure, including the foundations. The working area was 170 x 100 m, altogether 17,000 ft2, abutted by pipe rack structures supporting ducts on two sides, while on the other side were buildings, fuel and water tanks.

General Smontaggi SpA; Matera cement factory baking line, ItalyAnother cement factory demolition has been selected by the judges, this time the demolition of the old baking line at the Matera factory in Italy by General Smontaggi. the project envisaged dismantling and replacing the old baking line, with an annual productivity of 700,000 tons of cement, in order to permit the introduction of the new production plant. The objectives were clear: reduce production time-outs to a minimum, coordinate the demolition work with that of construction without adversely affecting security aspects. In 14 days, General Smontaggi demolished and dismounted 1,400 tons of carbon steel plant and reduced to a minimum the interruptions to production without slowing down new plant construction.

Montalbetti SpA; La Spezia port, ItalyMontalbetti has been shortlisted by the panel for an unusually and challenging project it carried out during demolition work at the port of La Spezia, Italy. Coke silos on one the ports piers were to be demolished, but this also involved the demolition of 65 m (214 ft) tall, 400 tonne weight crane that was partially built into the fabric of the silos. During the planning phase, considering the restrictions present, the decision was made first to gradually deconstruct the crane rather than perform controlled demolition with micro-explosives.

Lee Demolition Ltd; Little Heath Acetate Product Works, UKThe judges shortlisted the Lee Demolition Limited entry describing the work the company carried out on a major process plant demolition. Lee was appointed by Acetate Products Limited as principal contractor to carry out the decontamination and demolition of the former Acetate Products Works, at Little Heath in Coventry. The site contained a mixture of steel/concrete framed large-scale industrial buildings dating back to the mid 1920s. The site covered an area of approximately 40 acres. The works were complex in nature due to the scale and size of the structures.

R Baker & Son All Industrial Services; New Jersey petrochemical plant, USAR. Baker & Son has been shortlisted for a large, multifaceted demolition project it carried out at an active petrochemical facility in New Jersey. The overall scope of work consisted of the total demolition of a unit within the facility. Specifically, R. Baker & Son was tasked with the dismantlement and selective demolition of two 91 m (300 ft), a 49 m (160 ft) high, 4.9 m (16 ft) diameter columns, heat exchangers, tanks, boilers, cooling tower, rail loading equipment and other vessels, pumps and associated piping and steel work.

Despe SpA; Fonteville, MonacoIn the heart of Monte Carlo, in the principality of Monaco, Despe s.p.a. has completed the demolition of a three building compound in this famous town on the French Riviera. Despe has been shortlisted for the controlled demolition techniques used on the project in order to avoid interfering with the traffic and the life of the densely populated surrounding neighbourhood. The work involved the complete demolition of three existing buildings in Fonteville called Immeuble de la Colle, Sec and Hotel de la Colle.

S G Loewendick; Columbus City Centre shopping mall, USAHe judges have recognised S G Loewendick in this category for the demolition of the Columbus City Centre shopping mall, which had become obsolete by 2005 and was slated for redevelopment into a new city park. The mall was situated on 9 acres in downtown Columbus, and surrounded by city streets on three sides and buildings on the fourth. In addition, half the structure sat above a two level underground car park that had to remain in operation throughout the project and the structures were connected to buildings that were not being demolished.

URBAN/CONFINED SPACE AWARD

Despe SpA; Turin Railway Station, ItalyDespe has been shortlisted by the judges for a second urban project, this time for the demolition of Turin railway station. This project achieved the contract goals: to return a cleared area to the client without interfering with the city traffic or creating discomfort to the inhabitants of the district. To acheive these objectives, Despe even patented a concrete dust suppression system. Despe had to demolish a 9 storey building and a 2 storey lower body for a total volume of 50,000 m3.

Erith Contractors Ltd; Café Royal, UKErith’s demolition of the café Royal on London’s Regent Street has been recognised by the judging panel as being worthy of note. Located in the heart of the London’s West End theatre and retail district, the 143-year old Cafe Royal on Regent Street is one of the UK capital’s best-known and most-loved buildings, its 9-storey facade regarded as a national treasure. Leading UK demolition contractor Erith Group was awarded the contract to conduct the internal deconstruction of the structure to allow redevelopment work to take place. Furthermore, it has a frontage on one of London’s busiest streets that sees around 250,000 pedestrians and tens of thousands of road vehicles pass by each day. A tight deadline and extensive asbestos removal works were just two of the many challenges.

Porr Umwelttechnik GmbH; Vienna Südbahnhof, AustriaAustrian contractor Porr was one of two general contractors responsible for demolition and material processing at the redevelopment of the Vienna Südbahnhof. In 2010, the 109-hectare site was the largest demolition contract in the country. It consists of six separate contracts, three of which were demolition-related aspects, gained by Porr. The old station had two separate terminals with lines running to the south and east of the city. Situated in between the two terminals were a locomotive factory, post office buildings and office blocks. The site was surrounded by busy city centre road and had live railways running through it.

General Smontaggi SpA, SCA; Packaging Factory roof - Porcari, ItalyGeneral Smontaggi’s work involved removing the roof of a packaging factory following a sudden partial collapse of the roof structure. This intervention was particularly taxing because it was designed and executed in a very short timescale because of the emergency. Following the collapse, it became necessary that the remaining structure be removed and replaced with a newly constructed roof. The industrial building contained two expensive continuously running machines for paper production. The demolition had to be carried out without removing the equipment underneath, operating from above and with appropriate protection below.

Schijf Group; van Baerlestraat, NetherlandsContracting company Van Westen en Bakker commissioned Schijf to work on the renovation project in the van Baerlestraat in Amsterdam (The Netherlands), for which Schijf has been shortlisted by the judging panel. Schijf was selected for this assignment for its experience in dealing with very limited workspace, dust control, propping and rehabilitation work in Amsterdam inner city.

Armac Demolition LtdArmac Demolition Ltd was shortlisted by the judges for the work it conducted on the A34 Wolvercote Viaduct road bridge in Oxfordshire, UK. The A34 is a major arterial route within the UK road network travelling from the M40 to the M4 and M3 motorways, providing a direct link to the major ports of Southampton and Portsmouth. Approximately 70,000 vehicles cross the viaduct every day.

DespeThis charming and very specific intervention in the civil engineering category carried out by Italian contractor Despe was recognised by the judges, in part for its unusual nature – it was not a typical demolition, but more a conservation deconstruction.

Despe was engaged by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage to operate safely on an ancient tomb discovered in Santa Maria Capua Vetere during

CIVILS AWARD

the excavations for the construction of a new road. The main contractor came across an intact tomb wall weighing 22 tonnes, with the inner walls fully decorated. Initial estimations dated the historical relic to the pre-Christian Roman period. It was necessary to remove the tomb from the subsoil and transport it to the Capua museum for restoration stages and subsequent display.

City DemolitionRedevelopment work carried out by City Demolition Contractors (Birmingham) Ltd on the Edgbaston International Cricket Ground in its UK home city has led to the company being shortlisted for the Civils Award. This involved the identification and disposal of asbestos, soft stripping and the dismantling of a number of stands, which were abutting/adjacent to live spectator stands.

DespeDespe has been shortlisted for another archaeological intervention, this time in Naples. During construction of a new underground railway station at “Piazza Duomo” of Naples Underground Line 1, a temple dating back to the Roman period was discovered. Once again, Despe was brought in by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage to carry out the work. It was necessary to remove the remains of the temple to allow the work on the railway station to continue.

Cuddy Group, UKA single statement in Cuddy’s submission says clearly why the judges have shortlisted this UK company. “Staff development – and progressively changing people’s mindset to a safe, professional and Cuddy way of thinking – remains paramount.” To illustrate this, the company supplied some statistics covering its level of investment on training.

In the past 12 months alone, Cuddy spent 10,220.5 hours (equivalent to 1,703.42 man days) training 441 employees on topics ranging from confined space training to tree protection, accident prevention to hazards from pigeon faeces. The associated financial outlay is significant. For example, the CITB levy alone, from October 2009 to April 2010, was £34,919 (US$54,000). However in order to uphold Cuddy’s prestigious reputation and continuously fulfil the company’s ISO 19001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environmental) and OHSAS 18001 (safety) responsibilities, such spend is considered essential.

Dorton Group, UKWinner of last year’s Training Award, Dorton Group again has been shortlisted for its well-established, integrated training programme. This is a structured process that embodies an individual’s ability to plan and manipulate their career path in tune with the company’s progression of expansion. Dorton recognises that training and Instruction is an important element, but that this needs to be implemented as part of a bigger picture. combining health checks, feedback, support, education and appraisal.

O’Rourke Wrecking, USAA recognition that detailed training is just one component of ensuring safety, and taking action to implement this has seen O’Rourke Wrecking shortlisted for the 2010 Training Award. All OWC employees are required to complete OSHA 30-hour Training, OSHA 40-hour Haz-woper Training, CPR/First Aid, Lead Training, and Asbestos Training. In addition to the aforementioned, it provides more duty-specific training to various disciplines as applicable, such as Aerial Lift, Skid-steer Loader, Hydraulic Hammer, Fall Protection, Confined Space, Emergency Response, and Respirator Training. Its crane operators are certified by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO). All Personal.

DEMOLITION TRAINING AWARD

Despe SpA, ItalyOutside recognition from other organisations is another yardstick the judges can use as a guide to the effectiveness of an individual company’s training culture and ethos. Despe SpA. places a heavy emphasis on staff training and can boast the most experienced designers and technicians in the field. This is demonstrated by the fact that the Italian Police has chosen Despe as the most qualified company, in terms of demolition and impact on the surrounding environment, to host a training course destined to special bomb squads and anti sabotage groups.

Maylarch Environmental Ltd, UKMaylarch’s ethos of continuous improvement and development in its staff and its processes was evidenced by the submission it has made for this category, and for which it has been recognised by the judges. The company operates documented training plan approved by the CITB and conducts an assessment and appraisal process to help develop all staff. Given the nature of the work that it undertakes, its ethos states that staff training and development is at the forefront of its business.Training and development is part of its culture.

Erith Group, UKA key member of the UK’s National Demolition Training Group (NDTG), Erith Group has taken a “ground-up” approach to staff training and personal development to ensure that every employee reaches his or her true potential. In fact, the company has created a detailed training matrix that details the specific training responsibilities of directors, contract managers, training managers and, of course, employees. This training matrix is used across the board, regardless of employment or experience level, to ensure that Erith Group consistently meets its legal requirements, that its employees are safe, and to benefit the company as a whole. It is for this that the judges have recognised the company.

Cherry Demolition, USACherry believes that a successful demolition and concrete crushing company must adopt solid environmental, social responsibility and sustainability initiatives, and this belief has seen it shortlisted for the Environment & Recycling Award. A key component of Cherry’s overall environmental mission is to recycle its demolished concrete into re-usable crushed concrete. By doing so, it not only significantly reduces the amount of concrete and steel waste that ends up in landfills, but it helps preserve the USA’s natural aggregate resources. During 2009, Cherry recycled more than 1,000,000 tons of concrete.

General Smontaggi; La Spezia oil refinery, ItalyGeneral Smontaggi was shortlisted in this category for this unusual contract that involved the demolition of an oil refinery at La Spezia, Italy. One of the challenges of the job was the steps the company had to take to address odour issues in the residential areas around the site. Chemical analysis was carried out, airflow patterns established, and an air quality monitoring system established across the site to allow company personnel to take immediate steps to adjust work procedures to compensate/reduce gaseous emissions.

ENVIRONMENT & RECYCLING AWARD

Despe SpA; Paradiso Passo del Tonale cable car station, ItalyDespe has been shortlisted by the judges for this challenging dismantling job in a protected area in the Italian Alps. A unique naturalistic context, on the Brescia Alps at 2,700 m (8,860 ft) in a protected area where an old skiing cable car station had to be demolished without affecting the beauty and majesty of the natural setting and without damaging the new station built a few meters away from the ancient building. A difficult operation where precision and organisation made the difference.

Interior Removal Specialists inc, USAThe judging panel has shortlisted Interior Removal Specialists for its overall approach to recycling. A Los Angeles based interior demolition contractor, IRS is changing the way interior demolition debris is viewed and recycled. IRS Demo is the largest commercial interior demolition contractor in Southern California. The recycling efforts at IRS Demo have won them many state and local awards, and have enabled it to obtain two awards from the Solid Waste Association of North America as well as the International Solid Waste Associations Innovation Award.

NKR Demolition Group/Trapaner Recycling, DenmarkThis Denmark-based company has been shortlisted for its development of a recycling system for bituminous roofing membranes. Normally, such materials are either sent to landfill or incinerated but Trapaner has developed a patented system that makes use of a mobile shredding and sorting facility to produce material that can be used in the production of new asphalt.

Caterpillar SARL; Demlone high reachesCat has been shortlisted for its DEM concept high reach excavator, produced under the Demlone name by a joint venture company formed by Cat and partner Vensys. Three base machines will make up the range, each offering three different working heights, depending on boom elements selected. All necessary boom sections can be carried on a single specially designed cradle to ease transport.

Offering as it does one of the widest line-ups of demolition high reaches, Liebherr France has been recognised by the panel for its Liebherr Demolition Control (LDC) system that comes as standard on all the company’s high reaches. The system guarantees safe working conditions at all times, in a working area of 360° around the machine. This is accomplished through permanent, fully automatic monitoring of tool movements and tilt of the machine so that the stability of the excavator can be warranted

INNOVATION AWARD – SERIES PRODUCT

as well as safe working conditions. The LDC consists of a control unit, in-cab diode indicator, an acoustical warning device, three angle transmitters for monitoring attachment position and an inclinator for overseeing the carrier machine´s stability and level. From all these points, the system calculates any safety-relevant information. Limitation of movements is related solely to any decrease in stability. This means that movements further downward or upward are possible.

Komatsu; PC290 high reachKomatsu’s PC290 compact high reach excavator has caught the judges’ eye in this category. At 40.5 tons, it is relatively easy to transport, is ideal for demolition of 3-5 storey structures, and has been designed for inner city and difficult to access sites. It comes as standard with 30 degree tilting cabin, Level II OPG, heavy-duty guarding and ergonomic controls. It features Komatsu’s boom quick coupling system that permits conversion to dig configuration in under 30 minutes and a 2-position dig boom.

LST group; Demolator XMB SeriesPresented as a world premiere at bauma 2010 in Munich, the Demolator XMB series revolutionises the concept of demolition shearing and pulverising.

This innovative attachment is highly effective in the primary demolition of reinforced concrete, in heavy industry deconstruction and cutting steel constructions.

By quickly cutting through the reinforcement and pulverising the concrete at the same time, the models in the XMB series guarantee a clear competitive advantage.

They deliver material ready to be crushed immediately after primary demolition. Thereby the XMB series realises cost savings and an increase in efficiency of more than 30% for demolition contractors.

Volvo Construction Equipment; Modular jointVolvo’s unique “Modular Joint” on its High Reach demolition machines, as a contender for the Manufacturers’ Innovation Award – Series Build Machines. Claimed to be unique in the industry, this hydraulic joint enables a change from high reach demolition to standard digging equipment in just 30 minutes. The system uses pins and bushes that are like any other conventional pins and bushes on the equipment, so once the pins and bushes wear, they are simply removed and replaced on site, so no transportation cost, no engineering cost and minimum machine downtime, with a resultant higher level of productivity being achieved

Sagro; Demolition debris modelling softwareSagro has developed a method to safely handle high reach demolition through modelling of the projected path of debris falling from demolition work being carried out at height. The problem can be described by two differential equations. This numerical model has been verified by a PhD of the TUD. From it, empirical formulas were derived by Sagro for the horizontal displacement of the falling bricks under wind influence and initial horizontal velocity, as well as for the energy impact on potential collision with e.g. humans or buildings. With these formulas demolition companies can compute exclusion zones.

Powerscreen; AggwashIn June 2010, Powerscreen launched the Aggwash, a first ever fully mobile wash plant that brings together rinsing, screening, scrubbing and sand washing capabilities on a single transportable chassis.

The new Aggwash has been designed to handle a wide variety of aggregates; it is capable of producing five saleable products plus recovered ferrous metals. A key feature of the Aggwash is its ability to offer operators the flexibility to quickly and easily re-locate a complete wash plant operation, thereby eliminating the need for machinery duplication. Additionally the Aggwash allows operators to work in constrained sites because of its compact size, zero exhaust emissions, and low noise levels.
