Thank you for your interest in the 2015 HBA Annual Conference; we look forward to seeing you in Atlanta!
This guide is provided to help you select your workshops and complete the online registration process. Here is some key information to help you get started.
There are three opportunities to take workshops:
Session 1 - Wednesday, November 4, from 10:30 AM-12:00 PM
Session 2 - Wednesday, November 4, from 4:00-5:30 PM
Session 3 - Thursday, November 5, from 8:30-10:00 AM
The Workshop Schedule at a Glance provides an overview of the entire workshop schedule and includes the workshop number, presenter name, workshop title, competency number and the days/times that each workshop is offered. Most workshops are offered twice; some are offered only once. Workshops fill up on a first-come, first-served basis. No wait lists are available, so register early for widest array of choices.
In this guide, you’ll find a full-page description for each workshop along with a determination of the competency with which its content aligns. For more information on each competency as well as the knowledge, skills and behaviors for each, see the HBA Leadership Competency Framework.

Objectives
Recognize and gain insight into the emerging trend of modern social media activism and slacktivism, in which consumers, patients and shareholders use social media to galvanize change and propagate calls-to-action
Review best practices in issues management to proactively protect your organization or brand on social media
Identify strategies for coordinating a multi-functional response before issues escalate into crises
Today, anyone with a smartphone ― from patients to physicians to NGOs ― can confront organizations in the very visible global forum of social media. This workshop will help you understand the phenomena of modern activism in social media and become better prepared to mount a multi-channel, proactive response to neutralize issues before they escalate into crises.
Following an eye-opening video profiling savvy activist campaigns, you’ll dive into real-world case studies drawn from the healthcare sector; for example, compassionate use campaigns, spokesperson controversies and pricing complaints. Learn best practices to follow as well as major pitfalls to avoid. Using an Issues 2.0 model, workshop leaders will outline a six-step approach to protect brand equity on social media and then apply each step through the use of illustrative case studies. Finally, you’ll gain access to proprietary research that sheds light on how negative online commentary affects consumers and patients. Leave with a keener appreciation of the importance of proactively addressing social media challenges as well as specific strategies to help you plan and get ahead of such issues now.

Entrepreneurs understand that the future is something you create. Being in the right place at the right time requires discipline ― there is no magic bullet. So how do successful entrepreneurs and companies assess opportunities for their next big field of impact? They observe the marketplace, are able to envision a broadening of business boundaries and identify new spaces for growth. Pivoting from core competencies, new adjacencies are discovered and novel markets created.
This workshop will inspire you to cultivate these entrepreneurial attributes. Learn by exploring contemporary business cases and leveraging tools designed to expand your vision of what’s possible. An opportunity map, growth gap model and field of play map will be provided for this session’s interactive exercises.
While this session is underway, a graphic artist will capture the ideas and creative concepts that are uncovered and express them as art. Don’t leave without taking a picture to use as a visual reminder of what you learned.

About the workshop leader: LeAnna J. Carey is CEO and founder of Women Who Innovate, where she is known as a disruptive voice for innovators and entrepreneurs. Objectives
Foster the creation of an inclusive environment for team decision-making, drawing on a diversity of skills, talents and thinking styles
Use a six-step roadmap to improve the quality and efficiency of problem-solving and decision-making
Business is about managing risk and facilitating change in the pursuit of growth. And that involves solving problems and making decisions. Leaders and teams are often challenged in these areas. Some act impulsively on surface assumptions and scant information; others require ongoing discussion and comprehensive analyses. What’s needed is a balanced approach that provides the appropriate degree of rigor for the situation. This workshop describes the Analytical Rigor™ model, which provides a road map for facilitating decision-making and problem-solving. In it, six sequential steps are outlined, each with clear expectations of what to do and how to do it.
This session uses small-group discussion to help you develop the skills necessary to simplify issue complexity and make or influence decisions. With accelerated time to clarity/closure and inclusion of multiple viewpoints, both performance and productivity increase, yielding an important competitive advantage.

Erica was recognized by New Jersey Biz magazine as one of the 50 Best Women in Business in 2013 and, in 2014, was elected to the boards of two privately held companies. For the first time, the HBA conference is offering participants an opportunity to learn critical skills via gamification. This highly innovative workshop will provide you with insights into the perilous journey molecules take to become medicines by playing an unconventional educational board game with your fellow workshop participants.
Making scientific and business decision to “kill molecules” is essential to healthy R&D. In this workshop, each player is a disease area head with a portfolio of molecules. The objective of the game is to amass the highest value for your portfolio. Learn how influence, negotiation and collaboration are key in maximizing value and minimizing losses and that survival is linked to the overall portfolio as embodied by the company game board. All game accessories ― everything you need to play ― will be available.

Do you know when to hold ‘em or fold ’em?” About the workshop leader: Karen Soskin is a business and technology leader turned facilitator for disruptive change and team performance. Her journey is mapped in big pharma where she must “outlearn” to outperform the competition. Past experience includes Abbott, Amgen and Pfizer. With co-presenter, Christine Sharpe, Karen co-led team effectiveness for Roche Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development, and they partnered to spearhead development of this game.

Healthcare faces myriad changes, from value-based reimbursement to advances in health information technology, from shifts in demographics to changes in where care is being delivered. Fueled by an increasing pressure to save costs and deliver better outcomes, organizations are reinventing themselves. The ability to successfully lead change and achieve desired (or mandated) outcomes is critical. In many cases, merely making things better, more efficient, or faster will not suffice. Organizations and their people need to transform; this requires novel thinking and different actions to deliver a new, unprecedented level of results. In this workshop, you will learn to look at change in a new and empowering way as you develop confidence and competence in taking actions to positively effect change. Using a set of breakthrough models to transform people’s thinking and practice developing a right-sized approach to the transformation they face.

Identify potential opportunities associated with advances in personal health monitoring Digital technologies ― from wearables to sensor-enabled devices ― are changing how marketers engage with patients, healthcare providers and caregivers. At no other time have we had access to our own personal health data. While big data, the cloud and inter-operability enable us to gather, store and connect data in new ways, what does this mean for the pharmaceutical industry and for marketers? This workshop features a panel of industry experts who will provide an overview of digital innovation and the personal health monitoring landscape. Impact and potential opportunities for patients, beyond-the-pill solutions and healthcare providers will be discussed.

to our own personal health data.” About the workshop leader: Tracy Yedlin began her career in 1992 and has held leadership positions in advertising, marketing and digital strategy consulting. She has worked with Fortune 500 companies to develop and implement enterprise- and brand-specific digital strategies. In her current role, Tracy is the digital lead for the Takeda cross-brand marketing team. She counsels brands about the people, processes and platforms required to achieve digital excellence in the pharmaceutical industry.

Recognize thoughts, habits and attitudes that undermine confidence
Identify actions you can take to increase your confidence and communicate that to others
We know “confidence” when we see it, or think we do. In their book, The Confidence Code, Katty Kay and Claire Shipman deconstruct this essential, elusive, and misunderstood quality and offer a blueprint to bring more confidence into our lives. They identify five items that undermine confidence in women; namely: we think too much; we believe failure is a failure; we carry criticism around with us for too long; we don’t leave our comfort zone; and we don't speak up (and, too often, use upspeak, raising our tone at the end of a sentence in a way that suggests a question rather than a declaration).
Take this confidence code quiz, and see where you stand. Then join this workshop and hear personal perspectives from an expert panel of industry leaders. In this session, you’ll get up from your seat and review “ideas boards” with others followed by one-on-one discussions with a partner. Finally, you’ll write a note to yourself identifying actions you’d like to take to increase your confidence; three months after the conference, your note will be mailed back to you.

“Let’s crack the confidence code.” About the workshop leader: Natalie Benamou is a leading relationship marketer and division vice president at Exhibitus, where she provides solution-based strategies for healthcare trade show exhibit programs. As the 2014 president of the HBA Chicago chapter, she led and supported a board of 19 executives that served more than 800 local members. Natalie is also founder of Girl ImPowered (http://girlimpowered.com), which helps girls build strength, courage and confidence. She has written multiple articles about confidence for girls and their mothers.

Develop the ability to coach/advise others on their goals
Create and engage your own personal advisory board
While much can be gained from individual mentoring relationships, leaders also need a personal board of advisors to accelerate their professional growth and expand their circle of connections.
In this workshop, you’ll learn about the value of goal-setting and how to leverage a personal advisory board to help you achieve your goals. You will also simultaneously experience being both an advisor (sharing your knowledge with an advisee) as well as an advisee (learning from your advisor). Using a simulation exercise, you will be able to observe your personal advisory board in action ― see first-hand how advisors naturally build on each others' perspectives as they collaboratively coach their advisees. The myriad perspectives gained from the group offers each advisee an opportunity to consider best options for accomplishing their goals in a shorter timeframe and in a more thoughtful way.
This personal advisory board model creates a community of collaborative learning, where individuals help and learn from each other. Models describing how to create a personal advisory board will be provided.

About the workshop leader: Ilene Fischer is CEO of WomenLEAD, 2013 Mass Challenge finalist and 2013 Verizon Powerful Answers Award winner. Previously, she served as CEO of non-profit WEST, advancing women leaders in STEM. Other past positions include senior consultant with Insigniam Performance and Sunergos; managing director of Tom Peters Company, “In Search of Excellence," partner at Innovation Associates founded by Peter Senge, MIT Sloan, author "The Fifth Discipline." Ilene began her career as a chemical engineer at Raytheon and quality manager at Honeywell. She contributed to "The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook" by Peter Senge and is a regular blogger for The Huffington Post.

Maximize learning from on-the-job experiences Building a broad portfolio of leadership experiences is critical for career advancement. A diverse set of experiences promotes the development of new skills and perspectives, a larger network of relationships and the credibility and confidence to take on bigger challenges. According to Catalyst data, women’s portfolios are less likely than men’s to include certain types of “hot jobs” such as high-visibility assignments and international experiences.

Yet the cost of poor leadership behaviors is high, both for individuals and organizations: low morale, degeneration of team dynamics, high turnover, decreased productivity and poor business results.
In this session, 10 different types of “bad bosses” will be identified. We’ll discuss the behaviors associated with each, explore how these individuals negatively affect those under their direction, and review concrete solutions for improving ineffective behaviors. This interactive workshop, which will include a multi-media presentation and small-group work, will focus on a 10-year longitudinal study of leaders’ performance gathered from 2,600 in-depth interviews with Fortune 1000 executives. Using this research, we’ll define “Exceptional Executives” and highlight criteria for four phases of a successful executive assent: Ascend, Adjust, Assert and Affect. Finally, we’ll identify four sources and uses of power that predictively differentiate exceptional executives from the rest.
Why is this important? Today, leaders are moving into senior and C-suite roles at an ever quicker pace, often under extreme circumstances and with less tenured experience. With opportunity coming well in advance of the experience and maturity necessary to sustain success, failure is predictable. Research estimates that 3% of executive transitions “fail spectacularly” while nearly 50% “quietly struggle” in the first 18 months. And between 50-70% of executives fail within the first 18 months of promotion into an executive role. Clearly, the stakes couldn’t be higher, both for new executives and their organizations.

FinanceGives brings financial expertise to nonprofit organizations. Since 2011, 26 employees worked with more than 30 nonprofit organizations in seven countries. In this employee developed/driven initiative, “ambassadors” pause their day jobs to travel to Africa for three weeks in teams. They use their knowledge and skills to improve the financial management capabilities of nonprofit organizations and explore partner needs. Program ambassadors develop leadership, team-building and cultural adaptability skills while learning how to tailor leadership- and skill-transfer approaches to local organizations: a true “win/win.”
Participants receive a practical playbook with the tools needed to start similar programs, identify stakeholders, mobilize the organization and invest in talent development and external communities.

As leaders in healthcare, we are in a unique position to serve as role models of health and wellness within our organizations and to serve as champions of change. This workshop will provide case studies of organizations that have implemented strategies designed to promote a culture of wellness and describe how this has affected productivity and the bottom line. The importance of leadership support and the need for role modeling healthy behaviors are brought forth in case studies from a number of major organizations. Finally, an overview of the “Fit to Lead” program will be provided as a means for attendees to further cultivate fitness and leadership skills.
As executive leaders in the healthcare industry, we can play a critical role as key decision-makers to drive forward a culture of wellness in our organizations.
Note: This workshop requires completion of a pre-workshop questionnaire to assess "current state" of organizational wellness and barriers to change. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will leave with a worksheet to list actionable items they can address in their organizations.

About the workshop leader: Carol Addy, MD, is chief medical officer of HMR Weight Management Services Corp., a subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc. Previously, she led clinical development of investigational drugs during her 10 years with Merck Research Laboratories. Dr. Addy completed her MD and Internal Medicine residency at UMass Medical School and her fellowship in Endocrinology at Brigham & Women’s Hospital (Boston, MA), during which she received a Master’s of Medical Science Degree from Harvard Medical School. She is a former member of the US National Cycling Team and is committed to sharing her passion for leading a healthy lifestyle with others.

Participants will learn how business partnerships with companies like Google and Qualcomm are essential to invest in life beyond the pill and to capture new data from the ever-connected patient. Workshop leaders will provide a transformation model, facilitating a discussion of key steps. About the workshop leader: Meg Columbia-Walsh is a partner, global lead digital transformation and marketing excellence for Ernst & Young, following the acquisition of her company, Inverse Mobile, LLC. She was previously the founder and CEO of Inverse Mobile, a preferred Facebook healthcare agency, and was head of healthcare for Facebook. In 2014, Meg was chosen as an HBA Luminary. She was formerly chief marketing and sales officer for Sunergos LLC. Prior to that, she was president of Augme Mobile Health, a full-service mobile technology firm where she earned and managed mobile agency of record for Pfizer, J&J, BI, Abbott Diabetes and Merck.
