Touted as the most diverse borough in America’s greatest city, Queens has so much more than di-verse demographics.

From the silver screen to the upper decks, there is no shortage of things to do in New York City’s outer reaches.

This guide has been designed to pro-vide residents and readers with direction on how to make the most of their com-munity. If you haven’t experienced some-thing new in Queens lately, you will find it within these pages.

Along with our Guide to Queens staples — essential services listings, fire-houses, Y information, government con-tacts — you’ll find expanded entries on venues where you can enjoy the grand cul-ture that results from an amalgamation of more than two million people, each with a cultural heritage as unique as their com-munity.

It is duly important to recognize the

impact these venues have on our local economies. From Queens Theatre in the Park to MOMA PS1, every institution in Queens has contributed to the borough’s vitality and identity. As we all manage through these gloomy economic times, an escape from an otherwise harsh reality is often offered by the arts. And, historically, in the most challenging of times, our the-aters, galleries and cultural institutes are the places where emotional expression flourishes and can, in many ways, define an era.

So enjoy these pages, save them, clip them out, hang them on the fridge and experience a side of Queens that is worth discovering.

YOU WERE DELIVERING A SINGLEyou were about to get into the rhythm, & your weight was on your back footwhen you demonstrated that beauty knew no bounds

you were clearly the 1you were clearly playing better than anyone you were the reigning Open champion of the heart’s floodlit court

you were the valueyou were #1 among the constellations, & Venus #2

I always felt that you were beautiful in the classical sense of the Uryou were a young woman who’s always faced the challeng-es of life with cerebral poesyyou were a sweet 14 year oldyou were 2you were 24you were a born survivoryou were otherwise known online as Saint Clara

once, during our first month together, on the last leg of an unplanned trip into the Valley you drove me to a beautiful rented home in Rocky Pointsituated at a short distance from Milanlocated in Manzanillo one of Chile’s oldest cities next toone of Chile’s oldest townsit was a city of old world charm thenit was a city with a population of just over a hundred& you were their memory resident

to theater, Queens enter-tainment offers an exciting, diversified and affordable experience for families, singles and children.

“Entertainment and cultural events in Queens generally feature two very enticing qualities: authen-ticity and affordability,” said Seth Bornstein, the executive director of the Queens Economic Develop-ment Corporation. “Wheth-er it’s dance, theater, music, food, or even dragon races, the borough has the real deals.”

From the intimate to the supersized, Queens has it all.

Now Citi Field — new home of the Mets — in Flushing, has featured shows by Paul McCartney in 2009 and the Dave Mat-thews Band.

In March, near the sta-dium in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens The-atre in the Park presented the St. Petersburg Classic Ballet Theatre from Rus-sia. BY TAmmY ScilEppiQueens, which has a long and

glorious film history, is one of the most desired and diverse filming lo-cations in the country. It was very popular with 1920s film stars like Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and Harry Houdini. The Long Island Rail Road made travel to Queens studios convenient.

“The appeal of shooting films in Queens was based on the economics of studio production, especially loca-tion. Paramount put their East Coast studio in Astoria in 1920 because a new subway line linked it to Times Square,” said former Museum of the Moving Image film Curator Richard Koszarski. “Similar economic argu-ments hold true today.”

Since 1920, Kaufman Astoria Studios has become a cultural hub — a home to movie and TV produc-tions like “Nurse Jackie,” “Eat, Pray, Love,” “The Smurfs Movie,” “Sesame Street,” and the recently wrapped “Men in Black III.”

Silvercup Studios in Long Island City, where HBO’s “Sex and the City” was filmed, is the largest production facility in New York City.

A sampling of notable films shot in Queens:

The Wrong ManDir. Alfred Hitchcock. Starring

Henry Fonda, Vera Miles, Anthony Quayle

Based on a true story, this film noir’s location shots were captured where the actual events took place in Jackson Heights. Prison scenes were filmed in City Prison in Long Island City — today known as Queensboro Correctional, 4704 Van Dam St. A piv-

otal scene takes place at the former insurance offices, Victor Moore Ar-cade in Jackson Heights. Distributed by Warner Bros., 1956.

The Devil Wears Prada Dir. David Frankel. Starring

Anne Hathaway, Meryl StreepThe fashion shows were filmed

in Silvercup Studios. Nominated for two Oscars. Distributed by 20th Cen-tury Fox, 2006.

SerpicoDir. Sidney Lumet. Starring Al

Pacino, John RandolphSeveral scenes were shot in As-

toria. The elevated train stop at Dit-mars Boulevard was the location for a chase scene. Serpico had a clandes-tine meeting in Astoria Park, under Hell Gate Bridge. Nominated for two Oscars. Distributed by 20th Century Fox, 1973.

A Bronx TaleDir. Robert De Niro. Starring

Robert De Niro, Chazz PalminteriFilmed entirely in Astoria and

Jackson Heights, street signs were changed to make it look like the Bronx in the ‘50s. Some scenes were shot at Kaufman-Astoria Studios. The high school featured is William Cul-len Bryant on 31st Avenue in Long Is-land City. The church is St. Joseph’s on 30th Avenue, where funeral parlor scenes were shot in a funeral home. A bar on 45th Street in Astoria was used as the model for the Chez Bippy Bar in the movie (built in an old bakery called Benkert’s). Distributed by Sa-voy Pictures, 1993.

The WizDir. Sidney Lumet. Starring Di-

ana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell

Adapted from the 1975 musical, it was filmed at Kaufman Astoria Stu-dios. The decaying New York State Pavilion from the 1964 World’s Fair was used as the set for Munchkin-land. Other scenes were shot at Shea Stadium and Flushing Meadows Co-rona Park. Distributed by Universal Pictures, 1978.

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead

Dir. Sidney Lumet. Starring Phil-ip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei, Albert Finney

Filming of the gripping robbery scene took place in a jewelry store at the Bay Terrace Shopping Center in Bayside. Other scenes were shot in Douglaston and Hell Gate Studios in Astoria. Distributed by THINKfilm, 2007.

TipS fOR EmERgENcY pREpAREDNESS

Queens residents face many forms of disasters. Whether they be an earthquake, hurricane, a snowmageddon or a tornado, it’s important to be ready when they strike. To avoid injury — or worse — there are simple steps families can take now to prepare for the worst.

Here are some tips offered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

1) prepare a kit. Put together a collection of critical ba-

sics, such as water, nonperishable and easy-to-prepare food, flashlights, batteries, battery-powered or hand-crank radio, first-aid kit, medications, multipurpose tool, sanitary and hygiene items, copies of personal documents, cell phone with charges, emergency contact information and cash.

2) make a plan. Develop a family disaster plan and prac-

tice it. Contact your local American Red Cross chapter and find out what disasters are most likely to happen and how to prepare for them. Ask about animal care and how to care for el-derly or disabled. Develop an evacuation plan and pick two places to meet, one outside your home and one outside your neighborhood in case you can’t return home. Practice this plan with your family.

3) Stay informed. Learn how to “shelter in place” in your

home, vehicle, work or in-between, in case chemical or radiological containments are released. Choose a large room with water sup-ply that can be sealed off at home. Develop a sheltering plan at work and put together a kit. Learn CPR, first aid and how to use an auto-mated external defibrillator.

More detailed information on how best to prepare for an emergency can be found at emergency.cdc.gov/preparedness/shelter.

For a growing number of New Yorkers, tired of the delays

and expense of conventional local divorces, fast, inexpen-sive Caribbean and offshore US divorces have been the answer.A leader in the fast divorce business has been Divorce-fast.com of Massachusetts, a company that has been pro-viding speedy, low-cost for-eign divorces for 50 years. The company provides di-vorces that can be completed in as little as one day in Mex-ico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the US offshore is-land of Guam.According to Alan Alford,

proprietor of Divorce.com, some of the divorces offered require travel to the court, while some can be done with-out any travel or court ap-pearance. Some require both parties to sign the court pe-tition for divorce, while oth-ers can be achieved with only one party signing. All of the divorces happen very quickly and with a minimum amount of paperwork. The divorces are valid and recognized everywhere, and Alford reports that he pro-cesses several thousand of them every year, particularly for New Yorkers. The total cost for fast divorces starts

at $895, with other options raising the price to as high as $1,500. All of the divorces, Alford says, are completed within a few days and the cli-ents are then free to remarry or otherwise continue with their lives as single persons. Anyone interested in more details about the Divorcefast offerings should access the company website: www.di-vorcefast.com The forms and instructions are printed out from there and submitted to the company. For those lack-ing Internet access Alford and his staff are prepared to discuss foreign divorces on the phone, or by mail.

Hours: Monday to Wednesday, 9 am to 9 pmThursday and Friday, 9 am to 5 pm718-896-9090 COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICESSometimes family members who are caring for a frail or disabled person would like a chance to get away for several hours or days. This relief from their care-giving responsibilities can be arranged through respite services. A trained volunteer or paid worker can stay with the frail person overnight, up to a maximum of several weeks. Respite care also provides support groups, counseling, and training for family members. Some respite programs also offer a Respite center to which a frail person can move for a while. Sometimes this enables caregivers to take a vacation or a trip. Two respite options are available to some Queens residents:

S48 RIDGEWOOD SAVINGS BANKCELEBRATES 90TH ANNIVERSARY!

90 Years Of Strength, Stability & Service! In 1920, a group of 14 local Ridgewood businessmen got together with the idea of forming a new mutual savings institution to serve the people of their community. On June 18, 1921 Ridgewood Savings Bank opened its doors.

This year Ridgewood celebrates its 90th Anniversary - 90 years of treating our neighbors like family and serving our communities with strength, stability and service.

With over $4.6 billion in assets and 35 branches throughout the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester, Ridgewood has grown into the largest mutual savings bank in New York State.

No one will treat you more like one of the family than Ridgewood. It’s been a Ridgewood trademark since 1921. Come join our growing family as we celebrate our 90th Anniversary.
