Welcome to Eura! We offer you interesting encounters and lots of new experiences. You can either book a professional guide or visit the sites by yourself.

Eura was a busy meeting and trading place as early as the Viking age, thousand years ago.

Our prehistoric sites will teach you about ancient times and practices in a colourful way. It is useful to start at the Laughing Dragon Prehistory Guidance Centre, where’s plenty to see, do and try.

Eura was the site of historic ironworks and a predecessor of the industrial revolution.

Ruukinpuisto in Kauttua invites you to explore the works of art of the leading architect and designer in Finland, Alvar Aalto. The Kauttua Factory Museum exudes the age of the old indus-trial bigwigs.

Art and crafts live on strong in Eura. Visit our many boutiques and galleries, to shop or just to admire. Eura is also famous for its varied forests and lake landscapes. Those who love the outdoors will be attracted by our nature trails and paths. This brochure contains accommodation and restaurants to help you find your way and to make your visit to Eura as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Have fun while learning about prehistoric and contemporary times!

PrehistoryLives on in Eura

All the information on the life of the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age people are based on archaeological excavations. Archaeologists have been interested in the many Stone Age habitats of Eura, magnificent mounds of the Bronze Age and unusual burials methods of the Iron Age for over 150 years and there is quite a lot of research data available. From the viewpoint of Finnish prehistory studies, Eura is one of the most interesting loca-tions in Finland.

Especially the Iron Age of Eura is fascinating: Already in the 6th and 7th centuries AD, burials were only common in the Eura and Köyliö area in Finland. The life and daily routines in the late Iron Age have been studied by using the results of the archaeological excavations. The deceased were buried in their best clothing, wearing beautiful jew-ellery... The afterlife was prepared by placing tools in the grave. Men had arms and scythes, women a knife and a sickle. Food was stored in clay dishes to serve as provisions for the journey.

In this guide, we present some of the sights in Eura, for more information, please visit www.eura.fi.

LaughingDragon

Prehistoric Guidance CentreLaughing Dragon

The exhibitions at the Laughing Dragon (Nau-rava Lohikäärme) lead visitors to Viking Eura. On display are original grave findings from more than a millennium ago. In addition, there are replicas of objects such as swords, dishes and toys, made according to ancient models. On display is also the first reconstruction of the ancient costume of Eura.

Eurantie 18, 27510 Eura, FINLAND Tel.: +358 2 8399 0269, www.eura.fi /naurava

Luistari

The most famous finding from Luistari is the grave of the Lady of Eura, on the basis of whose treasures the ancient dress of Eura could be reconstructed. The largest burial ground in Finland contains Bronze Age burial mounds, a few replicas of Iron Age graves and information on the region’s archaeology. In the summer the site includes an exhibition space displaying the archaeological digs and findings of the area.

Härkänummi Village Brings History to LifeThe Härkänummi Village is a village built by the lake Pyhäjärvi surrounded by a pole fence as in the Iron Age. In the vil-lage, the family of the famous Lady of Eura lives the Viking Age. The village lives its everyday life and visitors are always welcome… and be part of the village life for a moment. You’ll meet the inhabitants of the Härkä-nummi Village, hear exciting stories and participate in village chores in the work-shop, at the fire pit and the weaver’s hut. The villagers offer Viking Age food and beverages.Pohjolan Muinaiselämys arranges tours to Iron Age for groups. The tour is tailor-made for each customer. It could include a visit to the Laughing Dragon Prehistory Guidance Centre and the prehistoric sites in the Eura centre area accompanied by a guide.Students can participate in a prehistoric camp school with plenty of new experi-ences. The camp school is suitable for all ages, and specifically for the lower class-es of the comprehensive school.

ESIHISTORIAN EURA

LinnavuoriLinnavuori in Kauttua Eura, is a steep hill ris-ing up from a field. Linnavuori was used to guard the routes of passages during the Iron Age. From Linnavuori, the view expanded to almost all burial grounds dating back to the end of Iron Age. It could be assumed that there were several villages nearby. A signal fire was lit to warn of the danger and the people used to climb up the hill to escape hostilities.

KuninkaanhautaKiukainen is believed to be named after Bronze Age grave memorials or barrows (hiidenkiuas in Finnish). The King’s Tomb (Kuninkaanhauta), a 30-metre-wide and nearly four metres high barrow in Panelia, is the largest of its kind in the Nordic countries. The secrets of the ancient family grave have not yet been completely revealed, since the massive rock mound has not been studied by excavation.

KäräjämäkiKäräjämäki is one of the extensive Iron Age burial grounds in the area. ”Judgement stones” are still visible here; they were origi-nally a part of Iron Age cremation ceremo-nies, but legend has it that judgements were passed here in the Middle Ages. The vil-lage elders and other venerable personages would handle the villagers’ disputes, making verdicts and giving sentences.

Ruukinpuisto in Kauttua is one of the finest sites of Finland’s industrialisation.

The ironworks led to the development of an in-teresting residential and industrial neighbourhood. The buildings in the park date back to the 19th century, and the buildings designed by the famous Finnish architect, Alvar Aalto, represent functional-ism.

A tour of Ruukinpuisto, or events organised in the park, show you the district’s interesting tradi-tions.

The Spirit of Alvar Aalto Lives on

Ruukinpuistoin Kauttua

Aalto’s Terrace House cleverly follows the con-tours of the inclined land. Completed in 1939, it forms a part of Aalto’s residential building plan. The Terrace House dates from the golden age of this Finland’s most renowned architect, and it showcases many of the ideals of Functionalist ar-chitecture.

The Terrace House is privately owned but can be admired from the outside.

The old village roadFor Kauttua, the most decisive factor shaping the image of the village is the main road passing through the village, Sepäntie. It was already used in the late Middle Ages. Old red ochre buildings bor-der the north side of the road.Outbuildings and cellars are located on the north ridge of the road. Towards the Mikolanmäki hill on the Varkaudenmäki hill, the buildings are newer.
